The Best Doughnut Shops in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Donut Star was a decades-old neighborhood establishment out in Burnsville when Peter Sebastian bought it this summer. After renovating the legendary shop, he reopened it with a whole new slate of doughnuts, apple fritters, and cinnamon twists. Stop by to experience a modern new take on a historic doughnut haven — one that stays true to Donut Star’s sweet roots. Now with a location in Lakeville." - Serena Maria Daniels

Google
Got a variety of donuts and all of them were delicious. Serve local coffee and my nitro cold brew was great. Atmosphere is cute, family friendly and the service was fabulous! Such a cute local spot! Love the kid seats with coloring supplies!

Alana Lucio

Google
Awesome service and tasty treats! Arrive early on the weekend for the best selection. Staff went above and beyond to provide great service. Steady customers while we sat and enjoyed our coffee and donuts.

Erica Bergman

Google
Great donuts, nice and soft!! Probably the best apple fritter I've ever had

Tyler

Google
Donuts are good and reasonabley priced. Size and bake are 4 out of 5. Flavor is 3 out of 5 with very mild flavors. Haven't tried the coffee yet. Vibes, staff, and service are 5 out of 5. Worth it for convenience.

Breanna Swanberg

Google
The donuts are fantastic. I can see why they were voted in the MN top 10. Service was quick friendly. The atmosphere was great. Natural lighting, coloring options for kids, cool mural. BE ADVISED: the coffee is terrible. BYO from the ground up the brew needs improvement. I had the cold brew the roast was burnt and idk not cured properly or something. It was undrinkable.

Google
Fantastic old fashioned donuts and donut holes! The glazed old fashioned and blueberry donut holes are top tier! The old fashioned donuts have a crisp exterior with great chew. The donut holes are flavorful and not too sweet. You can tell they hand-make their donuts everyday!

Google
Got donuts from here with the family early in the morning. Employees were friendly and gave good service. I had been here previously before the remodel and like how clean and bright the bakery looks now! I gave the cake donuts a try. While they were good, and I appreciated the real chocolate, I wasn’t blown away. My sister found the glaze on her raised donut a bit too sweet for her liking. I’d still like to come back to try other kinds of donuts.

Google
If I could I would give six stars. Julie was phenomenal and literally made my morning complete with her customer service. I've been going here for over 30 years since I was a child and I was never disappointed.

Yelp
Don't Star was the perfect start to a Saturday morning! Here is what we ordered: Vanilla Cold Brew (this was SO GOOD!!!) Hot drip coffee roasted by Tapestry Coffee Vanilla almond buttercream donut Peach rhubarb jam donut Chocolate Boston cream donut The service was friendly and efficient! Parking was easy in and out even despite it being a weekend morning. And the colorful graphics and art were a fun touch! This will definitely be a frequent spot we visit this summer :)

Yelp
First time here. I saw on Facebook that they have the We Support Burnsville Police and firefighters signs. This was on a Sunday and other businesses that have the signs are closed. I called and 2 were saved for me. So of course, I needed to return the favor and buy something. Donuts are $2, but there is a special to get 6 things for $5.50. I got 2 hot fudge sundae donuts with a real cherry on top, 2 apple fritters and 2 cookies. All are really good. I normally don't frequent donut shops, but was in the area to get the signs.

Yelp
The donut star has been a go to for many people in Burnsville/Eagan for years. When they got sold and revamped the place many were skeptical. Well let me tell you. The service is great and the donuts whole not the same as before they are just as good. They are still moist and fresh. The new flavors are also interesting and fun. The dining area is outer space themed and fun for the littles. If you crave that neighborhood vibe for a donut place check them out.

Yelp
Run to this donut shop! You won't regret it. As soon as you enter ( well, even before that ) you can smell the scent of freshly baked donuts right outside the door. They have a neon pink Star sign hung up as well as murals for decor. I love the clear glass showcase of all the donut options as well. You can't go wrong with any flavor of donut here. The frosted ones are really amazing though, and their filled donuts are incredible. They're always coming up with new flavors as well. I especially love the apple fritter. But seriously, everything I've tried is so good. So lucky to have this donut shop in the suburbs! It may not look like much from the outside, but it's seriously so worth it. Very affordable as well compared to other donut shops in the Cities.

Yelp
Friendly, bright donut shop with a good selection of delicious donuts! When we walked in, they gave our 2-year old a donut ball - made his morning! We got a half dozen donuts to share ($9) and although they were all good, the chocolate old fashioned and strawberry glazed were our favorites! On the way out we noticed they have a coloring area for kids. We will be back soon!

Yelp
Just popping in to update my previous review - after living here a few more years and having several chances to visit Donut Star this place deserves the five stars! The employees are always great, the donuts are always good (especially if you can get there early enough to try some of everything), and the interior seems to have gotten a face lift and the vibe from that is so fun! I love this place and look forward to many more years of frequenting here!!

Yelp
As the name implies, these are some of the best donuts in the area and the pricetag makes it easy to snag up all sorts of delicious, ever-changing menu items (my wife and I tried the bear claw, ginger lemon berry fritter, and a vanilla almond buttercream bar) and the coffee's pretty good also! Really nice, friendly and helpful staff, nice dining area that's been redone since the last owners with some cool wall art and some kid friendly stuff for coloring etc., and some outdoor seating also which we took advantage of since the weather was nearly perfect. I definitely recommend and will be back
google avatar

Mickensie W.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Newly remodeled and maybe new owners. SOOO much better than what it used to be. The donuts are delicious and they have many options! I loved the berry filled bear claw. Donut Star is close to home for us which makes it even better.

Yelp
Finally gave Donut Star a try and we're so glad we did! The remodel they've done is beautiful, and the service was top notch. The girl working that day took her time to chat with everyone while also moving through the line quickly. My favorite of the day was the almond buttercream donut - delicious!! They also have really decent cold brew.
google avatar

Yelp
Finally made it to the revamped Donut Star! We bought a dozen donuts and though I'm just one in, I'm sold! Simple flavor choices executed well is more than enough for a five star from me - the updated space (that looks amazing) and friendly service were both a cherry on top. Here's what we've tried so far out of the dozen - I'll be doubling back to the box this afternoon for a caramel roll, and this evening for a Boston cream pie donut dessert! -Vanilla cake donut with sugar: devoured in about 60 seconds (so good!) -Cruller: "really good" (which is a big compliment from my partner) -Strawberry frosting cake donut: partner didn't love the texture of the frosting (he said "it's probably just a style choice ) but said the flavor was good! Updated to add: I had the caramel roll and it was the best one I've ever had. No joke. So good!

Yelp
Great vibes wall art inside is awesome, very mom and pop shop type feels, everything looks fresh and smells delicious, the girl that helped me out was super nice and quick. I got a dozen donuts for the family, donut holes for the nephew and boxed coffee!
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
On our way home from a weekend away, Yelp brought us to the best donuts in the land. Such a cute little shop. Top tier customer service. And the donuts are heavenly. Coffee was good too!!!

Walt F.

Yelp
I believe Donut Star is under new management. I have always liked their donuts / but the new owners have taken the donut experience to the next level. Great variety, really good donuts that make you want to come back for more. Prices are competitive for gourmet sweets and the staff couldn't be nicer.

Keaton R.

Yelp
Overall: Donut star since being revamped has brought an elite donut experience for anyone in the south metro! You won't be disappointed. The shop has a creative feel with great vibes overall. Good music and updated fixtures all over. Best of all...it's super clean and welcoming. The donuts...my wife and I get a glazed old fashioned s everywhere we go and these folks have figured it out. Crunchy outside, soft inside, great flavor! The kids get raised donuts and love them but they're the easiest critics in the world. The blueberry donut holes. Just do yourself a favor and grab some for the ride home. This place is awesome!!
google avatar

Jennifer K.

Yelp
Best cup of coffee and old fashioned donut! Recently remodeled and under new ownership. Friendly helpful staff. I can't wait to go back and try an Apple fritter!
google avatar

Yelp
Donut Star, oh Donut Star where have you been all my life? Your delightful simplicity and focus on one thing, donuts, is an incredible discovery in these daze of confusing multiplicity and mass produced blandness. Tucked away in a non-descript strip mall I thought at first glance you were a Chinese restaurant. Thankfully that big red word DONUT on the sign above the entrance made me realize this is an opportunity to meet someplace new. Meeting the two ladies who are part of the fifth family to own Donut Star was almost as tasty as the two donuts I ordered. Donut Star was a refuge from the snow storm I was navigating on that fateful Friday in mid-January. Lucky for me they had plenty of donuts to choose from thanks to the poor driving conditions. Get there early since they usually sell out. Which tells you something about the quality of the donuts created at this small gem of a bakery.
google avatar

Haylie S.

Yelp
super nice service! my favorite was the vanilla almond:) we came around 10 and there was still lots to pick from!
google avatar

Ethan T.

Yelp
This fritter was wild! Crisp outside, thick pillowy interior. It reminded me of a fritter/cinnamon roll hybrid. I ate it several hours after purchasing it & it was great. This fritter wasn't greasy at all. Friendly customer service. The place was packed upon my arrival. Glad to see all the support for a local donut shop!
google avatar

Rachel L.

Yelp
We passed by a number of times but it was closed. I had a hankering for donuts but didn't want to grab any donut. I wanted a good old fashioned. That's why one morning I woke up and we were so excited to head to donut star. We made it right before closing time. The donuts were so worth it. Sugary and the perfect compactness of dough. It's this awesome local donut shop. Nothing pretentious but just donuts at a super easy price. Plus, the lady behind the counter threw in a some free donuts since it was closing time! Not a place to go out of your way but a wonderful to get that old school local donut taste
google avatar

Susan H.

Yelp
Excellent. Clean, bright, seating available, Peace coffee. Recommended.

Joe F.

Yelp
Wonderful, donuts, cookies and fritters. Really high-quality coffee. Very nice owner. Support a local business.

Kay D.

Yelp
New owners May 2022. Not the same Donut star we have been going to for 20 years. Recipes changed, menu changed and it is NOTHING like it use to be. Very disappointed. Sure hope they make changes, to get the original recipes and menu. If not we have to find a new place to buy donuts. So sad. The pictures on here are not current. They don't have MOST of the donuts shown in the photos.
google avatar

Yelp
Great donuts! I got to enjoy some over the last couple of days while on a business trip in Minneapolis. So good I got some extras to take back to the family in DC!

Daniel S.

Yelp
This place has become a go-to weekend stop for morning treats. Great donut holes, old fashioned donuts, biscotti and, of course, their apple fritters! I'm sure we'll be grabbing a box/bag our our way to the cabin this summer. The staff is cordial and the coffee is good. What else do you want in a 10-minute drive donut shop? Thank you for re-opening and offering our Burnsville (and greater) community such a nice option.
google avatar

Laura H.

Yelp
I went here during the COVID-19 pandemic for three reasons: 1) I read glowing reviews on Nextdoor, Yelp and Google. 2) I wanted to support a local business. 3) Because donuts are never a bad idea. My family and I went and immediately ordered a dozen. We then went home and had breakfast for supper just so we could eat more of these donuts. They are so good. Pretty normal flavors (no outlandish flavors or combinations here) just really good quality donuts. They don't taste greasy or heavy. They are JUST DARN GOOD. We will be coming back again and again. I'm very pleased to recommend them to anyone and everyone!
google avatar

Haley R.

Yelp
I used to come here with my sisters all the time and get amazing donuts. We loved the classic recipes and kept coming back for them. I've paid them some visits in the past few years and I haven't been able to get my hands on our favorites after 9 am. I would love if they made more of the classics : maple long johns, chocolate frosted, peanut topped, etc. They've started making gimicky donuts and i think they've sacrificed keeping stock of the OGs. We love you, just disappointed and missing the old days.
google avatar

Stephanie L.

Yelp
The worker was extremely nice and even gave me a free donut for it being my first time. Super cheap donuts. Taste pretty basic, nothing special. The cake donuts were good. Kinda small. Didn't care for the chocolate icing they use.
google avatar

Susie H.

Yelp
Some of the best donuts in the Twin Cities! The fruity pebbles donut is a reason to get up early and go! (But you can also order ahead!) great service. Love this neighborhood donut shop!!
google avatar

Tori S.

Yelp
Great service, fresh donuts, and a variety to pick from! Please check them out, worth the drive if you do not live close by! Keep up the great service and yummy donuts!!
google avatar

Katie D.

Yelp
These are the best, fresh delicious donuts. We got a box at their drive through donut day honoring the late former owner. They kept his recipes and are still doing it right.

Richard G.

Yelp
Don't let the outside fool you. The donuts are some of the best I've ever had, and they're FRESH!
google avatar

Roberta M.

Yelp
WOW, some of THE Best Donuts we've had in years! My husband and son-in-law went early in the morning, as we were advised the selection is at its peak then. Seems like a small family run place. It was clean, smelled awesome and every tray was full. They brought back an a amazing assortment and high marks for how well they were greeted and serviced. I'm a chocoholic and thought the chocolate one would be my fav, but the maple glazed with a whole slice of bacon really got me! Hubs thought he'd have it to himself, but I craved a taste and it won me over. Almost embarrassed to admit that 4 of us almost inhaled them all. There wasn't a bad one in the dozen of different ones they selected. There are even more varieties that weren't selected but apparently looked very enticing, so that deciding which to buy wasn't easy. Be aware however, that the shop closes when the donuts are gone. My daughter said they'd stopped once before around 10 AM and there wasn't a lot left to chose from. If that's a problem at least you know that the donuts are always fresh baked that morning!
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
Got there at 5:15am as my baby decided we should get up at 4am. I was going to pick up donuts for the family and head back home. I pulled in and all the lights are off. I checked their front door and website for hours and both said 5am. Waited for 5 minutes as staff came out and stared through the window at me instead of opening up. So stupid and frustrating. Donut cases looked full and ready. At least open the door and say sorry we will be a few minutes. Waited until a little after 520 and pulled out to go get donuts at Puffy cream instead. I was really hoping to try this place but after that I probably won't be back. (It won't let me add a super angry face lol)
google avatar

Matt R.

Yelp
I had a simple, wonderful cake donut while visiting our son in MN. They were out of apple fritters but we're so helpful, saying if we called the day before they could always set one aside for us. And then...an adorable girl (daughter of the owner?) was folding boxes in the seating area and waved to me as I was leaving. "Have a fantastic day!" she said, making my entire year now a great one.
google avatar

Michelle O.

Yelp
If you are looking for melt in your mouth, fresh bakery this is the place. These types of places are harder, and harder to find, but Donut Star is a gem!! I bring these to work as a treat on occasion and the team goes crazy! I am so popular and appreciated as a boss those days! Many different choices, and always delicious and fresh. They are only open until they sell out though, so get there early or risk things being gone or closed all together! So delicious and I hope I don't regret telling people :)
google avatar

Traci M.

Yelp
If you are into donuts this is a great place to try. Located in a strip mall not far from the Minnesota Zoo, makes it a great stop to give you and your family fuel before a day at the zoo! We loved the maple frosted and the Bavarian cream with chocolate frosting. The donuts are very light and airy (as donuts go). If we lived closer, it would be a regular donut stop.
google avatar

Tatiana D.

Yelp
First of all the people that own this place are wonderful and treat their customers so well. Second the donuts are awesome! Third you should go try them out, its worth it!!!
google avatar

Carmen H.

Yelp
What a great little doughnut bakery! The couple here are so friendly. I was in and out. We ordered a mix of raspberry bismarks, maple bars with bacon ("hog on a log", where I come from), and two with sprinkles. They are delicious! Upon arriving at home, the box was empty within 10 minutes.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
If you are looking for good donuts at a reasonable price, this can't be beat in the Eagan area. The owners have always been so nice whenever we've visited and the selection in the morning is great. They also rotate flavors quite frequently. Great place!
google avatar

Lisa K.

Yelp
What a great, "normal" donut place! They have some non-traditional flavors, but I really appreciate that most of their donuts are nice normal ones. I don't need my donut to be filled with flan and topped with cereal and oranges ;). My only complaint is that they aren't closer to my house :)
google avatar

Nate C.

Yelp
Top notch place. The donuts are superb, and very reasonably priced - like less than the grocery store reasonable. The owner is very friendly, and more than willing to shoot the breeze for awhile if the store isn't too busy. He also always asks up front if peanuts are ok when I order an assortment, which is a very thoughtful touch. Only thing I should mention is that the earlier you get there, the better the selection. It is still usually good at 7am, but it's superb at 5am when they open. And they close when the donuts are gone.. I haven't ever found them closed in the morning, but you never know!

Paula C.

Yelp
This a nice family run donut place. I would suggest getting there earlier in the morning or calling ahead to place your order. They tend to sell out of popular flavors/and or all donuts before closing. The customer service has always been excellent. I'd prefer this ma and pa shop over bigger places any day. Prices are great too!
google avatar

Cal M.

Yelp
This place is good, but I am not screaming about these donuts. I usually prefer my donuts to be screamed about. Apple fritters are kind of my go-to donut. Donut star's apple fritters were good but they weren't Bosa Donuts in Arizona good. So they lose a star for that. I've been here twice and both times this smaller man has been here. I assume he's the owner and baker of the place but I don't actually know. The service has been great. He's been very nice - I like the guy. They don't have a huge selection of donuts. I don't know if I just came too late (it's 10 AM) and missed some but there's only about five options of donuts. Apple fritters, glazed, and then assortment of donuts with sprinkles or not. The price is exceptional. I got three donuts and a milk for my wife and I to split for breakfast and it was just over $5. Anytime you can get breakfast date for the same price you'd pay for a coffee at Starbucks then you're doing well. Still can't decide which donuts in Eagan are better: donut star or puffy cream.
google avatar

Ericka A.

Yelp
A nice little place with an incredibly friendly man who works there. Their donuts are way better than the coffee. It's just regular coffee and kind of weak, but it's cheap. The donuts are cheap, too. We got 6 donuts, 2 coffees and 1 Vitamin water for under $10. I forgot to eat mine when we got them, so I waited a day and nuked the chocolate icing with sprinkles. It was still pretty darn good. My friend took my maple icing long john, so I might hold a grudge for a little while longer.
google avatar

kiki d.

Yelp
I was drawn to this place by the large neon DONUT sign. It's a tiny shop without much ambiance, but the donuts are pretty good. Small, but also relatively cheap ($0.75 for a bismarck). They are open until 2pm or 'the donuts run out'
google avatar

Lilly P.

Yelp
I love this place, the doughnuts are always very fresh, and are in a word Awesome! Do get there early, as this is a popular place, and on the weekend can sell out early.
google avatar

Anna M.

Yelp
I've been going her since I was in middle school, (15+ years). This shop is run by a husband and wife team. They are the best donuts!!!! and very cheap ( I think 75 cents) but once they run out, they're done so go early! I stop in very early when I work weekends (6am) and the owner is always smiling and happy to help me pick out 2 dozen for me and my coworkers!

Ariel B.

Yelp
Love this place! They are so kind and welcoming and how can you go wrong with freshly made donuts!! Definitely a must go.
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
I'm a teacher coach, and I was planning on giving the teachers at one of my buildings donuts on my last day. I knew of Donut Star from my commute but had never stopped there- and never had placed an order for the amount of donuts I needed. The worker I spoke to in the afternoon was really friendly and helpful. He let me know exactly how many donuts I'd need for the staff. He sensed my "newness" to the process and told me he'd put together a selection of donuts. I was allowed to pick a time the following day to pick them up and they looked great and were ready... I was even 15 minutes earlier than I had told them I was coming. Many of the teachers requested to know where the donuts were from! They were a HUGE hit.

Blake P.

Yelp
Went there this morning and the owner was super patient and nice. Great donuts for the price. I would rather go here than yoyo donuts any day.
