Absolutely perfect donut shop, this is a real LA donut shop. Not those overpriced and overhyped hipster places.

I love when I get to stop in here first thing in the morning! The woman who owns the place is so sweet and jovial - great way to start the day! The donuts are fresh and delicious - I always get them for work functions and the team loves ‘em! Thanks for being awesome! ✨💗

This donut spot was incredible. The cute chubby cashier was extremely helpful. When I was about to finish he helped me out. Never had this premium service at a spot. Definite left a big fat tip for what he did for me. The food was also good. I stacked three donuts this time.

Google
Wonderful donut shop to buy from the shop owners are very polite, they're always friendly every time i come to buy Donuts. The Donuts are always fresh and very soft, i buy from here once a week. If you come early in the morning, you'll have plenty of parking on the lot as well as almost Zero traffic. I love coming here and will continue to do so for as long as i keep living in Highland park. By the way, if your into ham and cheese croissants, you gotta try theirs. They taste great and the cheese does NOT taste expired like other places i have tried. The ham and cheese croissants are always fresh!

It pains me to leave a review about this place,by bringing more business, because I went today and alot of the donuts we're gone by 12:30.... AND the reason is, because they are the BEST donuts anywhere! From the plain donuts to the bigger ones, they're all amazing. The plain donuts have a beautiful crunchy crispy exterior with an amazing mouth feel to the inside. I've gone times where I just got a 6pack of plain donuts but all are delicious! And the owners are some great people. Tell em St James says hello and enjoy the best donuts with great customer service. But don't eat all of them please, save me a couple.

My favorite donut joint in the NELA area. Classic pink box type donuts served with a smile. I’d choose this over $5 fancy donuts any day!

Yelp
I saw a post on Nextdoor that Donut Star sold a winning lotto ticket and was now closed. I told my mom and she said, "Bummer, their Bear Claws were so good." I drove by a few weeks later and noticed it was opened. I guess the owner just took a much-needed vacation with his bonus for selling the winning ticket. Of course, I had to stop and get a Bear Claw. The owner was so sweet & friendly. He obviously enjoys running his shop and is not ready for retirement. I told him my mom said his Bear Claws were the best, so I had to try one. That made his day! I'm used to the more traditional Danish type with almond paste filling. The one sold here are a yeast donut with an apple pie filling. It was huge! I split it with my mom, niece, & nephew and there was still another half left. Mom was right. It was very good. The donut was soft, fluffy & topped with a light glaze. The apple filling was light on the sweetness. I'm sure the community is happy that he didn't close permanently. I'm glad I had the opportunity to try this yummy Bear Claw. I'm looking forward to going back for an Apple Fritter.

Yelp
(Snacked 02/15/24 TH @ 4:00pm): Donuts (apple fritters, to be exact!) were always stars in my eyes! I ended up at Donut Star in search of an apple fritter to enjoy with my dad on what would've been his 89th birthday. This pastry was one of his favorites, so I especially wanted to share one with him in spirit to commemorate this special day. If you knew me, my love for an apple fritter had no bounds, so whenever I saw a donut shop, I was always intrigued to stop in for a look. Would my dad and I consider the fritter found here a star among donuts!? PURCHASE 16floz Thai Iced Tea w/Boba ($5.95): A muddy brownish orange silty color with lots of ice and ample amounts of small chewy boba balls, this was slightly sweet with some viscosity. I generally enjoyed this liquid meal, but I wished there was less ice because I felt it took up more space than the tea itself. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=8opy9euU8Qke9icLb3pF5Q&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw THE "APPLE FRITTER IS TAKING OVER THE WORLD TOUR" CONTINUED... Apple Fritter ($2.50): Not that I was an apple fritter snob - eff it...yes I was! - but there was a certain way I liked mine. 1st, the price was less than the comparable going rate of $3.00. 2nd, it was round shaped, the thickness and density was closer to what I liked, and more the size of my hand rather than my face (an ode to the great Goldstar Donuts in Van Nuys). 3rd, there was a noticeable amount of apple bits. 4th, the overall darker brown color was good with several burnt ends (I loved it burnt!), and the medium/high glaze was good and made for a messy cracking effect. There were many crunchy odd crannies, corners, and nooks which I liked to break off into small little morsels. 5th, it was at room temperature with minimal hints of oil pockets and no gooey apple juices that leaked into your mouth nor dripped down your throat. Overall, it had very good value - 4.0 STARS. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=rXGx7xv6GCGLPDxCF-RnsA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw 10pc Almond Cookies ($2.05): I inexplicably bought this item whenever I saw them. Whether or not they were actually homemade or simply taken from a box, each cookie was fresh and crumbly, and paired well with some tea the next day. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=7Y5l9DjMGsgQSLyF8yMgTA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw Glazed Buttermilk Bar ($1.65): A short and stout medium-glazed creamy bar of goodness I had for breakfast the following morning, twenty-five seconds in the microwave softened it up as it easily fell apart while it slightly burned my mouth. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=1yDYQFRr8kJ_WLvXGLhESQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw Colored Sprinkles Strawberry Frosting Cake Donut ($1.50): A sweet treat that always puts a smile on my face. I enjoyed this as a dessert after I nuked it for 10-seconds. It was airy, light, and sugary goodness. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=LStbGQ7Ur6tUOPzkQ_KFEg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw SERVICE Kindly greeted by a friendly woman, she easily took my order (I was the only customer at the time), I grabbed a seat to rest my bum, and relaxingly enjoyed my bob drink and apple fritter as I watched the world pass me by. All was good and calming - thank you! PARKING (FREE) They shared a small-sized lot with several other businesses within a strip mall. Otherwise, there were plenty of spots along the main drag of Figueroa St. and other surrounding roads - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A standard donut shop with a main display case, price menus up on the wall behind the order counter, several promotional posters hung on pistachio-colored walls, and a handful of tables/chairs to enjoy your food onsite. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=cTlvMsmvQfxpcvLLjBsO_Q&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw Plenty of natural lighting came through the large glass windows and door while soul-sucking fluorescent electric ceiling lights covered the rest. There was one TV (turned off) while pop music played in the background music. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=ui2URt6nna8tYU5wfHLiHw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL Donut Star was a peaceful place and would definitely return if I were in the area again. Everything was very good, the prices were generally comparable across the board, and the service was quick and easy. They also sold coffee/drinks/juices/tea, sandwiches, various snacks, lottery tickets, and more! Plus, it was always a pleasure to support a mom & pop small business. I found good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $14.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS

Yelp
Sorry I used to love this store but recently went there with a puppy , this lady who serves in the morning just rudely asked to tie the dog outside. I wished there was a better way how she said it . We do understand the law of no pets allowed but to say tie your dog outside was a bit inappropriate. All we want to check if we could place an order for a pick up order .

Yelp
GREATEST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. WHEN I FIRT ENTERED THE NICE BOY, PROBABLY THE SON WAS EXTREMELY HELPFUL. The food was extremely good and the variety was wonderful. It was cheap and affordable and we even had fun. It was like god was feeding me. I got a dozen and stacked donuts and it so i really recommend you go! The decorations were nice and had many things like vending machines and other accommodations. The atmosphere was extremely unique and I can feel the culture through the helpful owner and workers. The little worker guy was cute

Yelp
This is by far not the best donuts in NELA, they did have a nice selection of the basics and I can only comment on the one I got and just wasn't all that good and at $2.00 it's priced a bit higher than most other Independent donut shops. Apple Fritter ($2.00) https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/donut-star-los-angeles-4?select=FiSxxr86ZNma2sbHk-KnVQ Nice size but lacking in everything that makes a good apple fritter like apples, cinnamon and spice https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/donut-star-los-angeles-4?select=FiSxxr86ZNma2sbHk-KnVQ perhaps their classic yeast and cake style donuts are better? 2-Stars

Yelp
If you aren't looking out for this donut spot then you will miss this gem. This is the classic donut stand from when I was a child. Their donuts are yummy and everyone is super friendly parking is tight and I believe they charge for using credit card below a certain amount. I enjoyed my cinnamon roll - yummy!

Yelp
$2.50 for a jelly donut?? Ouch. For that Ill just go to starbucks next time. The donut was nothing special, just a regular over priced donut.

Yelp
Great mom and pop donut shop in northern section of Highland Park. They are friendly and very warm to all that come to their store. This donut shop is just down the street from my house. Their donuts are fresh and big in size. They do have specials at times. But they still put in a free donut in the box.

Yelp
Horrible prices, all the reviews say its a nice cheap place to buy donuts and coffee, a coffee over ice is 6 dollars, wtf lol also there's a surcharge of 1.25 if you need to use a card'l "$1.25!" Unbelievable, firstly surcharges for any transactions is like 4% or lower and isn't a flat rate charge, I usually let it slide for other donut places if it's 50¢ but for 1.25, you're crazy. Don't go here

Yelp
The donuts from here are so yummy! When I walked in, I instantly noticed how beautiful all the donuts were and was greeted by very friendly staff. We were in and out quickly and the whole experience was rather pleasant. I'll be coming back again!

Yelp
If you want affordable and delicious donuts with no frills, this is the place to go. This mom and pop shop has all your basic donut options and all taste so fresh. Even later in the day, these donuts were still fire. I also can't get over how sweet and funny the lady and gentlemen working behind the counter were. Always coming here for a quick donut fix.

Yelp
Best classic donut around-always fresh with a nice doughy texture and a soft glaze sweet enough to scare your teeth (but not kill them). All served by good people, and the prices cannot be beat: $10 for a dozen plus an extra. They're even great the next day! My favorite is the coconut glazed.

Yelp
When we moved to Highland Park in 2008 I tried all the donut shops in the area and fortunately for me, the best one turned out to be Donut Star, which also happens to be the one closest to my home. Lucky me. The service is always as good as their outstanding donuts and they're always well stocked. They also have a nice ice cream selection for those rare days when a donut isn't what you want and an ATM makes it handy to grab some cash. I'm so happy they're in my neighborhood!

Yelp
The best local mom & pop donut shop. They always throw in an extra donut and are super personable! The donuts are great quality, I like them both soft and crunchy & they do them both.
