Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week - Eater LA

"Sometimes the best packages come in small sizes. I went camping with friends over the weekend and upon returning home drove straight to my local doughnut shop: Donut Star. The selections were sparse on a Sunday afternoon, just a few frosted cake doughnuts and none of my usual picks: buttermilk bars and traditional glazed. I selected the frosted cake and never looked back." - Eater Staff

Good eats, good atmosphere. The worker was handling register, taking orders, and making food all by himself at once, without flaw. I've been in this neighborhood all my life, and this donut shop has never failed me. The prices are a little expensive for what you get but this shop has been here forever so I dont mind supporting my local shops and businesses.

Great food! The lady behind the counter Rosa was super fast. I recommend calling ahead to order your sandwiches it gets busy at times. Awesome place to meet new people. 👍

Google
Came by right as they were closing and she still took me in. The donuts were delicious and the lady was super sweet. I’ll definitely be coming back!2

Google
It’s unfortunate this is the closest donut shop to my place because the mood inside depends on who’s working. If you get Rosa, you’re going to get a rude experience each time. If you get the owners, you’ll be ok. I’d rather walk the extra few minutes to happy donuts on eagle rock as that staff is pleasant each and every time you walk in, no matter who’s working.

Google
I get the croissant lunch sandwich just the ham and cheese no bacon and it’s so fresh and a solid sandwich! Lots of drink options and they usually throw in a free donut roll in your bag which is just sweet (:

Google
I don't know the name of the woman but I do know she is Cambodian and made my sandwich to perfection, along with a delicious smoothie

Google
Tuna sandwich on croissant is bomb and the beats fruit juice 👌🏽

Google
Awesome place for coffee and donuts. Never a dull moment employees Rosa and Kim and the regular customers are awesome. Been going here 30 years meaning best donut in town. I suggest if you want your food ready quickly call in your orders ahead of time. It gets really busy at times.

Yelp
The person working today was incredibly rude and it's a shame because it does not map with the experiences I've had with other staff members or the owners. Based on a few other reviews (one with photo) - this rude worker appears to be Rosie, and having been to Donut Star several times, I can attest this is pretty standard behavior for her. It's sad to see someone with poor behavior at the helm of an otherwise solid establishment.

Yelp
I went there today my first time and I was ordering a chocolate croissant and a cream cheese bagel. The lady behind the desk was nice and the ambience was fine, so far so good. Once my bagel was ready, she wrapped it, put it in the paper bag and gave it to me, so I paid and left. When I was ready to eat my breakfast and I took the bagel out of the wrap guess what I found? A "charcoal" the bagel was burning all over. I feel really cheated and what she was trying to do is just to get rid of me quick without let me know about it. I was expecting from that lady at least to let me know about what happened, apologize and offering me and new one instead, that's all.

Yelp
I've been going here for as long as i could remember but didn't try their sandwiches until recently. The donuts are donuts so you know it's good. The sandwich have the best flavor for an amazing price. It usually doesn't take too long but you might have to be patient. The service is good too and everyone is friendly but in the sense of like a family feeling. They might seem cold but they're nice people that love their costumers. Any reviews on bad service most likely deserved it. The place itself is pretty run down but it adds to the vibe! Highly recommend the number 9

Yelp
The donuts and sandwiches are delicious but the service sucks. The lady that works there Rosie is rude and makes people not wanting to come back. The owners are welcoming and extra friendly. But Rosie is ruining their business please get rid of her.

Yelp
Love this donut shop! The donuts always taste delicious!! Everyone buys the ham and cheese croissant. The owner is also very nice!

Erin H.

Yelp
This is a jewel of a neighborhood spot. They make great sandwiches, have a wide selection of chips and drinks, and offer FANTASTIC donuts. Much tastier than any of the new trendy-looking donut and sandwich shops. The staff are also very kind. Highly recommend.

Yelp
She served the person in front of me that was not wearing a mask but refused service to me because I took mine off. This lady has a negative attitude and preference, it's what I've noticed the two times I went. The first time I assumed she was having a bad day and just released her negative attitude with me, but now I see that she is the problem. If the place requires a mask then she should treat everyone the same. Customer service is very important and she needs to learn how to treat customers.

Yelp
This place is SO LEGIT. A real, no nonsense, old school, high quality donut shop. They never disappoint. Always super fresh. They're priced incredibly low. The staff usually throw in and extra few donut holes for free if you buy a couple of donuts or more. Nice guys, great donuts. It's not a fancy, neon colored, glittery hipster, $10 donut place. It's proper, real deal, sugary, glazed, fresh, soft and sweet, $1.50-$2 a donut, local community store. The donuts speak for themselves. They're awesome. What more could you want?

Yelp
The best donut in town. Honestly this is my go to place for sandwiches donuts and nachos. My favorite is the nachos super good with jalapeños yum! Other than that awesome customer service always welcome attitude. Been going here for 17 years never a dull moment always a smile in my face when I leave this place. . AAA+++

Yelp
I wanted to like this place. I really did. However, the woman working the counter was very rude. They also do not carry any non dairy milk. It's 2022, we're in LA! How hard is it to keep some almond milk on hand?? On top of the bad service, the food wasn't even good. I had a croissant breakfast sandwich. The bacon was rubbery and the croissant was not very good. Will not be returning.

Flower B.

Yelp
I'm very sad this place is NOT the same, I been living in this area more than 10+yrs and the quality and service is Not the same "Good!" The Lady was charging me $5.00 even, even though my total was $4.69! She said "ok I charge you $5.00"! Look I get there's a minimum $5 to use a debit/credit, cool no problem! Hey I'm Not giving my money away that easy. Hey I don't mind grabbing a drink or something else (which I did!) To complete a minimum. Plus She's Always Rushing! Customer are friendly and nice because I grew up here! And I know them. Honestly I'm not returning

Yelp
Ate one of the best glazed donuts of my life here today. It was perfect in every way and the woman working at the shop was lovely. What a treat!

Yelp
Love their chocolate doughnuts. The doughnuts are always fresh. Customer service is great!

Shauna F.

Yelp
I LOVE this donut shop! The donuts are perfect and the service is amazing - the owners are so nice! Hard to keep myself from going every day tbh.

Yelp
I was here later in the afternoon and the doughnut selection wasn't the greatest. I got a glazed twist, soda and a couple scratchers. I won $50 they are a lucky retailer. There's a sign in the window from the lottery. It's a family run place and the couple is very nice. Come here have some doughnuts, beverage, and get some scratchers or play Keno.

Yelp
I love donuts as much as the next guy, but this place has a secret-- GREAT sandwiches! I would never think to order a sandwich when I'm in a donut mood, but luckily someone tipped me off to the lunch selection here. I love the BLT or a turkey-- the ingredients are fresh and flavorful and never feel like a belly bomb. I like to come here and load up on some sams and a few treats before a long drive. Also the owners/folks working are incredibly sweet! They seem to have a lot of happy regulars who they make breezy chit-chat with as they fill up donut sacks and juice cups. Much love for Donut Star!

Yelp
Their are a LOT of Donut shops in the NELA area and I'd say Donut Star is in the Top Three... The Donut selection might be just the basics, but they always seem to be FRESH, soft and taste real good! http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/donut-star-los-angeles-3?select=qaSLlwp_QsUwFcjA8T10hg#HTcp8I3as27NjtN5F0DdSA service is friendly too. Not a Coffee drinker, they have a large juice selection, want a Sandwich they can hook you up with that too... Chocolate Twist - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/donut-star-los-angeles-3?select=qaSLlwp_QsUwFcjA8T10hg#r6JWPqpN2yRojNvmhgwA9A This wasn't mine but was given two thumbs up! Bear Claw - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/donut-star-los-angeles-3?select=qaSLlwp_QsUwFcjA8T10hg#LCDTDC2l-zi7etTgQi4eDg Yeah that's how Pancho rolls.... This was very fresh, nice and soft, nice amount of cinnamon and apple inside. Don't forget those Lotto Tickets!

Yelp
Favorite donut shop in the area :). The lady Rosita is always very nice and on top of things. The donuts are delicious, with the option of getting them warmed up. They also have a variety of different breakfast sandwiches that are delicious. Their boba drinks are also great! Love to come here for iced coffee and donuts :)

Yelp
I used to love this place, but they broke me down with one thing after another.Disgusting. 1. I had already stopped buying sandwiches here because once I saw the woman preparing it, prepare it right after touching cash. 2. I had stopped buying donuts here because several times I saw flies flying around the donut case with donuts inside. The last reason I had to come here was for their nachos, they were like old school ice cream truck nachos... but no lore3. Today I ordered nachos...they prepare them in the back... all of if a sudden I see the woman grab coffee creamer from the front fridge, and I'm like what!? There we're no other customers so I know it was for me m.. long story short I confront both owners about it and they tell me they do this because the nacho cheese is too thick!! GROSS!!! She the proceeds to tell me, "that's how restaurants do it"! No they are trying to make their cheese last in the most disgusting way! Nacho cheese melts, that's what IT does! Never going here again! This place is going to make dormir really sick one day! You've been warned!

Yelp
You gotta love Donut Star. Everything from their boba to their roast beef sandwich is good. The family that runs it is so nice. It's a really convenient place to feed in to your cravings. Parking is a pain in the @$$ , but it's nothing too bad. Hope they stay in business for a longggg time.

Yelp
Located in a tiny strip mall in Eagle Rock, this donut shop is just plain convenient for me. It has the unique distinction of being in my morning walking path which is a dangerous thing for my thighs. With a large selection of donuts made fresh every morning one can not help but drool over the Long John's or the fritters or the donut holes. Their donuts are pretty tasty as far as donuts go. They are light and fluffy and not overly greasy like some donut places...and because they are fresh, it keeps me coming back, more often than I should.

Yelp
I'm only writing this review for the boba drinks here. BEST boba I've ever had (and I am a boba fanatic so I've tried all kinds of places). It's sort of my secret location that nobody knows about. I've slowly been introducing my friends tot his place and they each automatically maks this their go-to boba place... They are generous with the boba too. One problem: they can't split an order of boba. What's so hard about splitting the boba into two cups?!

Yelp
Local shop near my place and haven't gone there since I was young and boy, has it changed. Their donuts used to be delicious and mouth-watering as any donut should taste and yet, recently my experiences have been bland, not so fresh, or clean either. Last time I went (last week) I was greeted by a fly in the compartment where all the donuts are placed. Hopefully they do a better a job of keeping the flies and any other guests with wings out of where they sell their donuts. They share in the same complex as a 99 cent mini mart, laundry mat, salon, and a couple of other tiny eatery joints as well. No problems with parking either.

Yelp
This donut shop is right by the freeway I have to get on for work and sometimes in the morning I either grab a ham and cheese croissant or a chocolate bar donut from here. They have a very extensive juice selection from all over: Asia, Mexico, and the harder to find US. Their donuts are pretty yummy. They aren't oil heavy like bricks nor are they cotton candy light. They are good average donuts, no tricks fellas. I give the donuts 3 stars. They also have Kerns nectar in guava 1 star for that. Whoop Whoop! The inside can use a re-modeling but I think it's mostly regulars that frequent this joint. I believe it is CASH only! Parking lot is really small, crappy, and bumpy... Watch for major bumps that pop out of no where... This is the same donut shop as Polka Polish Restaurant.

Fork In The Road E.

Yelp
These are some of the worst donuts I've ever had. I've tried twice now, one because I'm a donut addict and two, because they are right down the street from where I live. I thought, hey, maybe they were having a bad day, or the regular donut chef called in sick. But no, they just make horrible donuts. Stale, terrible chocolate glaze, terrible selection. Donut Star should be called Donut Far as in stay far away... Try Donut Friend up the street if you want consistently, buttery, melt in your mouth, fresh, warm donuts.

Yelp
Donut star's ham & cheese sandwiches are a fave for me, my sister, and my significant other. They always make them just how you want them!!! Great price too. Parking can be a pain sometimes, since its an small plaza and all. otherwise, it's all good.

Yelp
I live around the corner and have been without a car. So I frequently visit this Place. I've learned the sandwiches are kind of amazing recently. It's not the meats it's the bread and the love they put into each. The Donuts are good and I'm a fan of the boba. The staff is very nice and family run! Great donut shop!

ME B.

Yelp
I went in the afternoon, so not a huge selection but, what I had was tasty. The yeast glazed - very fresh, light and fuffly. Haven't tried the plain cake yet (the hubster will give a review) but the surprise fav? The cinnamon cake donut. Really nice pop of cinnamon, very fresh, was better than some pricy coffee cakes I've had! I'll try in the am in the future for more of a selection but kudos to them for freshness in the afternoon : )

Row K.

Yelp
I recently discovered that they sell blueberry donuts! If you've heard about the blueberry donut craze in the Anaheim area, then you'll know what a struggle it is to get some. I found that Donut Star's blueberry donuts taste almost exactly the same! Like all their other donuts: it was fresh, soft, and had just the right amount of sweetness! I will be back for more!

Yelp
6/15/12 Excellent service, best Taro Boba and not to mention tasty addicting donut holes.

Yelp
Donuts are o.k...nothing spectacular. Taste just like all donut shops. Low rating is for the woman working there and her lack of customer service...with donut shops at every corner I would rather go elsewhere...
google avatar

Venus P.

Yelp
Convenient location right next to the freeway before you're going to work. You get all your donut needs here met. They have some pretty good croissant breakfast sandwiches here I recommend you try it

Lucia P.

Yelp
Been coming here for years, good donuts and sandwiches. Happy they are part of the neighborhood, nice family run business!!

Melissa D.

Yelp
I always pass by this place when back in my hometown and I was looking for a boba fix without going too far, and this was the closest place. I was hesitant at first because it is a Donut shop, which isn't exactly known for boba, but I decided to give it a chance and I ordered a mango smoothie with boba. The mango smoothie was pretty good. Not too sweet. And I was very surprised by the boba. It was actually chewy and I was actually able to taste the boba. Now this is very surprising to me because it's very hard to find good boba around the area. But the boba was actualy A-OK. And that's why I'm giving it a 4 stars cause now I know where I'll be going when I need a quick boba fix.
google avatar

Yelp
Like the neighborhood feel here. Staff is friendly and even offered to warm my croissant without having to ask. Always a plus-lotto access for when I'm feeling lucky. They also have Sammies:-) yum

Steve J.

Yelp
Pretty much your typical donut shop, but definitely a solid spot. I love to sit in there enjoying my donuts and coffee while observing all of the weirdos that constantly stream in to buy lottery tickets.
