Donut Star is a cherished gem that perfectly encapsulates the essence of a childhood favorite donut shop. Every bite of their classic doughnuts is like a delicious time machine, transporting me back to fond memories of simpler times. The flavors are timeless, and every doughnut has a distinct, nostalgic charm that brings back happy memories. They offer orange, Ube, Pumpkin (seasonal) and all the other classic flavors. They offer a wide selection of traditional favorites. From glazed to chocolate-covered, from jelly-filled to maple bars, every option is a testament to the classic donut shop experience. The variety ensures that there’s something for everyone. The prices are reasonable, offering great value for high-quality doughnuts. The texture is crispy on the outside and a soft fluffy moist cake on the inside and the raised doughnuts are perfectly pillowy on the inside. The affordability makes it easy to indulge in these delicious treats regularly, which is a big part of their charm. It's a cornerstone of sweet, nostalgic joy. They have two locations and both are out of the way for me and both are worth the drive as this is my number one favorite spot for classic doughnuts in San Diego. Boutique donut shops are great to splurge at once in a while but Donut star is where my childhood memories are in each bite. For anyone seeking the timeless pleasure of classic doughnuts, Donut Star is the perfect destination. It’s a place where every bite brings back the magic of childhood, making it a beloved favorite for generations. It’s a classic hole in the wall donut shop that is 5 stars with every bite. They also offer seasonal donuts. One of my favorites is the pumpkin donut during the fall! I love love their glazed, orange, white chocolate with sprinkles, and the cinnamon crumb doughnuts!

Good selection of donuts with a few speciality ones, a dozen donuts is $20

If you find yourself in the Balboa Park Hillcrest area and want sweets or a cold refreshing drink out of the box, try Donut Star. An Asian ma and pa donut shoppe thats consistent.with quality, taste and drinks that are well priced and varied. No fancy" paying for rent" prices place but on a hot or cold day/night, hot cocoa to cold blended drinks will comfort the thirst and sweet tooth of all. I had a small (it was a large amount) Taro blended drink and it was good. If u never had Taro, its like light syruped pancake flavor .

The Donut Star is a cute little spot. They have their own private parking lot and a couple of tables inside. They offer donuts, breakfast, sandwiches, coffee and more. They have a variety of different flavored donuts. There’s something for everyone! The price is not bad, I think it’s the standard price for donuts. The older man that works at the front was really nice and quite talkative. When I walked in it was as if I’ve known him for a long time! Very cool. The donuts tasted so fresh! Soft and moist you can easily eat two or three of them. Of course my go to flavor is always chocolate or maple but you can’t go wrong with a old fashioned donut! I also had one of their taro coconut donut, those two go together well. Loved it. You might ask di I try them all? Oh yes, I’m not afraid to try ‘em all! Can’t wait til the Next time I come to San Diego! This sure will be one of my stops!!!

Life is worth sweets. Although eating a donut after a vigorous workout is counterproductive, Donut Star is worth it. Hey, I'll do an extra mile tomorrow. I love traditional donuts that are soft and moist in the inside and sweet to cure a one time craving. Donut Star even has fancy-fied donuts for those who need to have flair. My favorite is the original buttermilk, glaze twist and cinnamon roll. Yes, my donut taste is basic. But there is no oily residue or pastry sticking to the roof. These are my reasons I would recommend Donut Star: 1. Inexpensive 2. Donuts are fresh from am to late evening 3. Local business that serves with a neighborly spirit Move over Oreo, ice cold milk now has a new BFF.

Yelp
Tried the vanilla sprinkle and chocolate coconut donuts. Good taste and soft cake. I love that they have everything from normal/basic donuts to fun ones, like s'mores. Staff wasn't friendly. They weren't rude, but seemed in a rush despite no line or other customers needing help. They didn't seem very happy to answer a question about their most popular donuts. Minimal eye contact surprisingly. Might come back. Depends on if I find a better spot.

Yelp
4/29/24. DS provided a fantastic first impression! The donuts I've had were incredible. 4/25/24. Taro Donut and Maple Bar: these were soft and melted in my mouth. Medium sweetness, but the buttermilk is the standout, 5/5 stars! I've noticed that they were already out of the s'mores donut at about 10 a.m.; therefore, I will have to try that next time. I'm looking forward to many future visits here and is a must for dessert after having Bronx Pizza.

Yelp
One of my favorite, donut shops! I will drive 30 minutes just to have the donuts here. They're always freshly baked. There are a variety of flavors to choose from. I personally love the peanut butter and jelly. They're a little bit expensive but it's a nice treat to have. They have a little parking lot you can park in or there's street parking right in the front. I found Street parking right in the front on a Sunday morning. There was already a few people inside, sitting down having their donut and coffee. I walked in ordered at the counter paid, and left very easy, definitely will come back.

Yelp
DO NOT GO HERE! They advertise falsely on their menu board and charge you extra when they want to. The dozen donuts say $19, they charged me $20 on Sunday for no reason. Then i went on a weekday and they charged me $17. Same dozen 3 different prices. Bunch of crooks.

Yelp
When asking my kiddo what do you want for your birthday breakfast? They answer, DONUT STAR!!! I can't disagree on that breakfast of champions! We go here often because the employees are so kind and the donuts are fresh and yummy. We often get a regular glazed twist, maple bar and croissant oh and a chocolate milk to enjoy before going fishing or just to enjoy on a Sunday morning. I am sure my kiddo will have great memories of this place as an adult like I did for my donut runs with my parents. Today they did a kind gesture for my kiddo's classroom which is very much appreciated. I hope you visit Donut Star soon so stop by and say HI and enjoy some delicious donuts! We are glad to have Donut Star in our neighborhood! Oh btw - we checked out Donut Bar downtown and the donuts were so expensive and dry, we were filled with regret and cursed ourselves for being unfaithful.

Yelp
Donuts, fruit juices, breakfast sandwiches, wide variety of drinks... all this and more is what Donut Star has to offer. We wanted to deliver some donuts to a fabulous medical team nearby, but once we arrived we realized that they also had breakfast sandwiches made to order, they were so good and tasted fresh. We had the croissant breakfast sandwich. As for the donuts, so many options. I enjoyed a raspberry filled one and it was perfectly balanced in sweetness. The ladies were so friendly and fast to make our breakfast sandwiches.

Yelp
I just decided to go to a random donut shop before class that was closest to me. New favorite place!! I got a nutella strawberry sort of pastry and an iced coffee. I know their place specializes in donuts, but this was the best iced coffee I've ever had. Super cold and a little sweet. Come for the donuts, STAY FOR THE ICED COFFEE. They also have their own parking lot, which is super huge plus for a place like Hillcrest that's really busy.

Yelp
We were originally going to a generic Dunkin Donuts but spotted this place. So we decided to give it a try. The have maple bacon donut and it was the softest most pillowy donut I ever tried. My daughter had their s'mores donut and she said it was good but it was more like a sugar trap than a donut. The bacon apple fritter donut also was very sweet but the bacon off set some of the sugar. My husband had the old fashioned blueberry which he said was fantastic. The only downside is not really their fault. I think the water has a funny aftertaste so their tea although there were many nice flavors was ruined. The couple running the place are cute and nice.

Yelp
This is a good spot. It's great for a quick breakfast. They have great donuts, but I like the breakfast sandwiches especially the Crossiant egg sandwiches

Lucinda G.

Yelp
I've been coming here for over 30 years and always, always get the white frosting sprinkle donut, though everything I've tried is delicious. I've tried all the other shops around town that people rave about but nothing compares to Donut Star. Service is consistently great, and they always give extra donut holes! 10/10 every damn time.
google avatar

Yelp
The donut variety is great, but nothing here is excellent. Just above average donuts and very sugary. Some of the donuts could be better with more fruit and less sugar covering them. The people who work here are super nice.

Yelp
I came here to grab donuts around 6 pm. There was still a huge selection but narrowed down to these ones. What we got: - Taro Donut 5/5: I haven't seen a place that offers a taro donut before and this was honestly the reason I wanted to come here. The taro reminds me of the taro boba you can get at boba shops. There's a sweet taro glaze. - Green Tea Donut 4/5: The donut didn't really taste like green tea to me. I thought it was okay compared to the rest of the donuts I got. - Boston Creme 5/5: The cream in this donut was so good. There was a lot of cream in this donut and it wasn't too sweet. - Blueberry (2) 5/5: I'm a sucker for blueberry donuts so I had to get these. I'm not a fan of cakey donuts but the blueberry one is pretty good. - Nutella Strawberry 5/5: This one was pretty unique. I wish they had more strawberry in the filling since it was mostly just nutella. Surprsingly not too sweet. 6 donuts came out to be $14. All the donuts were so soft and fluffy and fresh. I'll definitely come back here, especially for the taro and blueberry donut.

Yelp
Great Donuts, Delicious Coffee, friendly efficient service. The Chocolate Old Fashioned is my favorite.

Yelp
I'm in San Diego for a week and I wanted to try some donuts here as I feel like donuts aren't represented well enough where I'm from (Oahu). So it's a Monday night at 8pm, what's open?? A few places I had bookmarked were closed but I noticed Donut Star was still open! And it had good reviews. So off I went. I was by myself since my wife was at the airbnb with my daughter who was still sleeping after a full day at the zoo. The area around donut star seemed like it could be sketchy at times, and there were some characters loitering around the parking lot. But donut star was there, looking like a beacon of industrial fluorescent light in an otherwise darkish area. As far as I was concerned, this is always a positive when a donut shop is in a sketchier neighborhood. Inside was a friendly lady and an array of donuts. I said I'd order a half dozen and picked five flavors (glazed, taro without coconut, old fashioned, blueberry old fashioned, and strawberry). I asked her what's popular, and she said "OH MY GOD, so many" and she rattled off a bunch of donuts and said that the cinnamon rolls are also good so I added a cinnamon roll as my sixth flavor. $11 for sugar bliss, what a deal! Off I went with my white box of happy donuts. Verdict of these donuts??? Man these donuts are freaking delicious!!! The blueberrry old fashioned was soooo good it's a perfect sugar bomb with great blueberry undertones. The glazed donut is so much better than Krispy Kreme. I haven't tried the other flavors yet but I already know Donut Star is the real deal. Oh almost forgot to mention, that nice lady slipped me an extra donut in the box! I love Donut Star!!
google avatar

Karla R.

Yelp
Craving something sweet? Donut Star has a great selection of donuts to satisfy your sweet tooth! They got your old fashioned, classics, seasonal donuts and unique flavors, so it can be a bit hard to choose which one you'd like. For myself, I ordered: -taro donut (7/10) -blueberry old fashioned (10/10) -chocolate twist (9/10) -pumpkin spice with cream cheese (10/10 =$8 It looks like your typical mom and pop shop but one great thing about this uptown bakery is that it has its own parking lot!! Super nice to just roll in without any fuss, order what you'd like and leave just as easily.
google avatar

Deb S.

Yelp
I believe your oil is bad. The donuts were not only dry, but tasted of old oil. Quite greasy, as a matter of fact. I probably would not try this place again, when there are so many other choices for donuts around town. Sorry Donut Star - you didn't rank for me this time.
google avatar

Sheryl S.

Yelp
The donuts are SO tasty and there are so many of them to choose from. The staff are delightful and the "donut chef" can usually seen behind the counter, making his delectable products. Even though it's in Hillcrest, there is parking just steps away from the counter, and, if not, one can find parking along Washington Street. Highly recommended,
google avatar

Samantha W.

Yelp
Really yummy donuts. The raised maple bacon was incredibly fluffy and delish. I do think it would be better with less bacon though. My husband loved the blueberry old fashioned and was so excited that they offered it since he had never had one before and loooves old fashioned's.
google avatar

Deanna C.

Yelp
What a hidden GEM! I'm not into Krispy Kreme or Dunkin Donuts. Donut Stars donuts are so fresh/soft/ the perfect amount of sweetness. They have something for everyone! They are always so friendly here as well! I love supporting mom and pop places and it's even better when the quality of food is so awesome! Awesome Apple Fritter, Jelly donuts, cream filled, specialty and more! Yeah their might be homeless people in the parking lot but, that is NOT the owners issue that is a SAN DIEGO issue that we have so many homeless displaced people. So if you're in the area and want a treat... HIT them UP! you will not be sorry!
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
Don't tell them how awesome their prices are compared to the inflated world we are living in Try their ube donut if you like something different & sweet. Very unique flavor hardly ever made in San Diego. They tempt me every time I go to Vons across the street
google avatar

Jon L.

Yelp
It's not real fancy, and there's not a lot of room to sit, but this place makes some amazing donuts. The blueberry old fashioned is great. A great variety as well, from simple glazed to maple bacon long johns and fully loaded s'mores donut. The service is friendly too.

Monica M.

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY THE BEST! I must stop if you're in Hllcrest. Or just to try their delicious donuts. They are so light and fluffy. They just melt in your mouth. Just the right amount of sweetness. Makes them guilt free. They have some creative flavors and designs. Try a Taro flavor. They have other yummy things to order off menu board, like Boba tea.
google avatar

Yelp
Life is worth sweets. Although I agree that eating a donut after a vigorous workout may be counterpriductive, Donut Star is quite addicting. Traditional donuts without an the extra flair. And those that have extra flair still taste like a donut at heart. I appreciate 3 things at Donut Star: Donuts even late night are soft and fresh Donut Star compares beyond their hoity-toity competition Local business with neighborly service By the way, there is also choices of smoothies, coffees and breakfast sandwiches. Move over Oreo, Donut Star and ice cold milk are BFF's

Yelp
I'm always looking out for great donuts and Donut Star in Hillcrest did not disappoint. After having sushi for dinner, we needed something sweet to eat. Donut Star just so happened to be on the same street so we were very excited to try this donut shop. Donut Star is a diamond in the rough that offers unique flavors and opens late. Taro? Taro with coconut? How about Nutella with banana? Yes please! They even had the fluffiest cinnamon rolls with a crumb topping! Oh my gosh it was heavenly! And what about the caramel apple fritter? Wow! Talk about next level. We wanted to try so many but we all know that day old donuts ain't it if you don't finish them all. You have to enjoy them while they're fresh. Okay, we might have ordered too many to eat in one sitting, but who's counting? There's always room for dessert, right? These donuts were nice and warm in the box. We couldn't wait to drive back to our hotel to eat these bad boys. We were ooh-ing and ahh-ing after every bite. I believe they make them throughout the day which is fantastic. We also ordered a few beverages- honeydew and guava smoothies, and an iced coffee to wash the donuts down. The drinks were tasty. The lady who was working was very friendly. She even offered to bring our beverages to our car so we didn't have to wait in the shop. Donut Star is special and the prices can't be beat. I wish Donut Star was in my neighborhood! Sooo delicious!

Yelp
Donut Star is delicious! They made the cutest halloween donuts for my halloween mani pedi event!
google avatar

Yelp
I like a good doughnut, and I really like Old Fashion Doughnuts. This place makes some pretty good ones. I picked up a couple, a maple and a chocolate one, they were both good, but the icing on the maple was harder than it should of been, but other than that they old fashion doughnuts did not disappoint. The cake portion of both doughnuts were soft and tasty. Service was friendly enough. They also make breakfast and lunch sandwiches at this location.
google avatar

E S.

Yelp
Nothing is better than a fresh donut. This place is great I got donuts for my staff and they were a hit.
google avatar

Georgina T.

Yelp
My friend you still live close by to here. I remember we would come by here after drinking at the house and going to get donuts for some reason. It sounded like the most perfect thing to do at that time. The donuts here are always tasty and fresh. I really like the maple bars here because it had a nice maple flavor to it that was different from the other donut shops. The donut holes were also bomb. You can never go wrong with donut holes when you have been drinking. The staff here is always nice and they probably knew that we were and just having fun walking around the neighborhood. We have to go by the nearby Vons to get some more drinks so stopping by donut Star was always a treat. Don't star has been around for a long time and I hope they stay around for so much longer. There's parking here so you never have to worry about finding a spot. They open pretty late for a donut shop so that's cool. I try to come by here whenever I'm in the area and craving a donut.

Yelp
Once again...the craving of fried dough was intense. Decided to walk down to Donut Star to satiate that craving. I've never been before and doesn't seem to look like much from the outside but the line out the door had me curious. Donut star didn't disappoint. I walked in with to friendly faces greeting me and the smell of sweet goodies filled my nose I instantly began salivating. TMI I know but it happened. I quickly blurted out give me a dozen of your choosing. Just make sure the maple apple bacon fritter, buttermilk, blueberry sour cream and sour cream old fashioned in in the box. So the verdict? Fire! I love dense donuts that give your mouth attitude as you sink your teeth into them. Will I be back? Heck yeah! Welp onto the next and an extra mile on the b

Yelp
Please fix your hours. Drove here on a Saturday night because the Yelp listing said they closed at midnight. Arrived around 9:15p and the lights were off. What a letdown. Ended up taking our craving to another donut shop with correct posted hours.
google avatar

Eva M.

Yelp
What a great local business. These are some of the BEST donuts I've ever had (and that's an understatement!). If you're looking for some delicious donuts, go to Donut Star!
google avatar

Tash A.

Yelp
I came here on Sunday morning around 10am. Half a dozen donuts are $6.50 + extra charge for certain premium donuts. I tried a variety and was happy with all of them. Donuts are light and airy - much better than other typical "gourmet donut" shops in San Diego! This is just your mom and pop donut shop but they do not disappoint! Parking is available out front. There are some homeless people nearby but that's not their fault. FYI the homeless people nearby seemed harmless. I saw a customer buy the homeless guy a donut and coffee and the homeless man thanked him. Anyways, I'd recommend this donut shop to others!

Maggie446 ..

Yelp
Last year I picked up 2 dozen donuts from here for an office party and this week I was back for 4 dozen + donut holes! They were a team hit, no more Krispy Kreme. Check out their taro flavors. The owners are also super sweet, thank you Stephanie & Kim! :)
google avatar

Samrana B.

Yelp
Donuts are huge here! Stopped by to grab a quick breakfast for my partner on our way to the zoo. Cute look place that have a ton of donuts! They also have savory items and coffee. Bring cash with you since I think it's extra if you pay with card.
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
Very good donuts, chewy and not overly sweet. This shop can compete with the best in Sd. It's also great to support local businesses. My friend Ja'rale w. Referred me to this spot. I am a regular now...

Yelp
Banana Fritter. Apple Fritter. Customer service. All FANTASTIC! Cute little bakery too!

Yelp
By far one of the best mom and pop donut shops I've ever been in. They offer a variety of breakfast foods and lots of different flavors of donuts. My personal favorite besides the old fashions, was the taro with coconut toppings! Those two just blend together very well! It was delectable! The price is not bad, I think it's the standard price for donuts. The older man that works at the front was really nice and quite talkative. When I walked in it was as if I've known him for a long time! Very cool. They are in a great spot too with a private parking lot. There's only a couple of tables inside so might as well take your donuts to go! Can't wait til the Next time I come to San Diego! This sure will be one of my stops!!!
google avatar

Maria L.

Yelp
I was going every day...but, because of health situation going on I was forced to STOP! With that said; I honestly give it a 5+ it's affordable the donuts are super tasty, fresh and not too sweet You have to try their freshly made Croissants I always get the butter croissant $2.50 Owner are always welcoming.

Yelp
Was going to go to a different donut shop and it was closed. Came over here cause it was the closest to the other shop. Oh wow thank goodness I did. Donuts were of many variety. They have smoothies for $4. They have the classic donuts and then there are also specialty ones. There was gummy bear donuts, s'mores, banana fritters, taro donuts. I got a s'mores one and wow it was so good. It was stuffed with chocolate on the inside like a chocolate that was nice and thick. The donut itself was so fluffy and soft. It was topped with marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate. My friend got a smoothie and he devoured it he said it was so good. He got a guava one. Amazing donut shop I will be back if I'm in the area.

Yelp
Mmmm sweet memories. When I was younger, I visited SD every summer. I'd spend days at my aunt & uncle's donut shop and steal the donut holes because they're just so cute and yummy. They've since retired and so those donut memories are just memories. Or so I thought! I'm from Oregon and we don't have raised donuts like the ones I ate during my summers in SD. The raised donuts are soft and fluffy. The ones I've come by in Oregon are not so delicate and just seem more dense. It was such a delight to come across Donut Star! Okay, I didn't come across, my cousin (daughter to my donut aunt and uncle) took me here. Their raised donuts were reminiscent of of the ones I had during my visit. So fluffy and light! I tried their taro coconut raised donut. The taro glaze didn't really taste like anything other than plain glaze that was purple. That was a bit disappointing, but didn't ruin the donuts for me. I am happy with a raised (purple) glazed donut. And of course, I got got a dozen donut holes for good measure at $2. Fun fact! The reason the donuts were so reminiscent of my aunt and uncle's show was because the recipe hailed from the same master mind! If you want some SoCal donut history, look up the documentary "Donut King"!
google avatar

Piper T.

Yelp
I've had their donuts before and loved them but their hours are not accurate. They don't open at 5 am like it says. Don't hold your breath that they are open till midnight either. Just go to a different donut shop honestly
google avatar

Doof N.

Yelp
donuts are overpriced and when I walked in flies were all over the donuts, also do not ask them to chose the donuts for you because they WILL give you the old donuts and the gross flavors no one likes. Overall don't waste the time and money on overpriced fly filled donuts.
google avatar

R L.

Yelp
Although they have a lot of variety, the quality leaves some to be desired. I went with my son and got a half dozen variety. My sons fav was the chocolate twist. We did try the bacon maple, the Oreo and the s'more and none of the higher cost "exotic" ones were really that good. Kind of gimmicky. I would say if you go keep your expectations measured and go with the basics.. chocolate long Johns, white cake donuts with sprinkles, old fashioned.
google avatar

Vince N.

Yelp
I just went into donut star for the first time, I am new to this area and drove past them while heading to Vons. These have to be the best donuts in town, no competition. The Oreo and Reeses doughnuts were amazing and the old fashion was delicious. I also got the #6 off the breakfast menu which is ham cheese egg and bacon croissant, I honestly might go back for lunch. Highly recommend this place, the man who helped me out was very nice and helpful. I'll be back! Thank you
google avatar

Beth G.

Yelp
This is a ma-pa place in Mission Hills. The building looks like it could use some up-keep. I got several donuts here. The chocolate with sprinkles was my favorite kind (but it always is anywhere). I also got the fruity pebbles one, but the fruity pebbles were stale so that was disappointing. I also tried the "taro" donut since it has a lot of rave reviews. FYI "Taro is a starchy root crop with edible leaves and has provided good nutrition to Pacific Islanders for hundreds of years." internet definition LOL. I wasn't a fan of the donut, but it was nice to try something cultural. The staff were really nice. The iced coffee was decent. Overall, 3 stars. Would come again, but would like to try other donut shops in the SD first.

Yelp
I've stumbled upon this gem a few times on morning walks on the weekends and I've had the best experience. Today I visited this shop on National donut day... and this was my place in my mind when I had plans to buy my surgery department donuts but I checked yelp and they said they weren't open yet... i figured it was a small blip and decided to call on my walk there - they answered and said they had been open for HOURS and to come on in. When I arrive there's an organized social distance line to enter the shop. A local regular was outside chatting to folks in line about how great today was and how amazing the shop is. I felt so welcomed. When I finally entered the shop I was greeted instantly! Thinking they might be busy I felt I needed to make a quick decision on my dozen box of donuts... not the case at all. The gentleman helping me walked me through what variety I was searching for and made sure I was more than satisfied with my selection. I felt very appreciated as a customer on the busiest donut day of the year. The service was top of the line given its high demand that day and the donuts were amazing! just ask my coworkers!!! I'm so grateful that gems like these have made it through this pandemic. This place is one in a million.

Yelp
DO NOT SLEEP ON THE DONUT STAR!!! This place is incredible. Their donuts are super fresh and delicious. I also love their ice: coffee.

Yelp
Best donuts in San Diego. Period. Not some $5 per donut place. Not some trendy, fancy place. Donut Star in Hillcrest. That's all. No more to write. Best donuts.
