Donut World Review - Sunset - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Donut World is a small shop in the Inner Sunset with greasy-spoon-diner feels—just without the seats, or the diner food, for that matter. Instead, this place has a wide selection of donuts available until 11:30pm (or 12pm on the weekends)—and in the somewhat-sleepy Inner Sunset, that's worth a ton. The old fashioned donuts are the way to go—the thick cake-like batter melts in your mouth. Out of all of the donuts, the maple old fashioned is a nutty hit, but you’ll always leave happy with a plain glazed or anything covered in sprinkles." - Ricky Rodriguez

The restaurant and store were both clean and well-maintained. The food tasted great, and I appreciated the variety of donuts available. It’s best to arrive early for the variety of donuts, but even when I went around 5 o’clock, there were still plenty of options. I do wish I had gotten there earlier to try some other donuts, I had my eye on. Overall, the donuts looked and tasted delicious, and I’ll definitely be returning!

Google
Stopped in for a quick bite. It was closer to lunch than breakfast so maybe that’s why they were a little low on selections. The donuts tasted great, but a tad bit dry, which again may be due to the later time in the day. Very friendly service and the little place was neat and clean. Will have to try them again earlier in the morning next time.

Google
Donuts are amazing. I think my favorite donut is the bear claw. Sometimes there are not many options depending on the time of day. There are cake donuts, filled donuts, yeasty donuts, and others. We’ve been obsessed with trying them all. Been there three times since we discovered this place only three weeks ago. Highly recommend.

Google
They have very good donuts, and they have both yeast and cake donuts! Service was superb. He knew his stuff. Thanks! Very good attitude. Fresh, delish, and held up for a few days. Great job!

Google
I go there expressly for their Apple Fritters ~ BEST in town. And I usually talk myself into another donut or two on the side. :-)

Google
First time visiting Donut World! Went in with the plan to only grab a couple and ended up with a dozen. So glad we grabbed more, because these are GOOD. Will definitely be back!

Google
An excellent spot for your sweet tooth cravings. I’m a huge fan of raised donuts and Donut World knows what they are doing. Come early so you can see all the varieties they offer. Affordable pricing!

Google
Their Buttermilk and Old Fashioned Style donuts are fantastic! The buttermilk style is by far one of my favorite donuts in GSO. If you have not tried it, then you simply must. They are my go to cheat day snack. I like to dip their apple fritters in my coffee.

Yelp
Usually I'm KKD girl, but after passing this place numerous times decided to stop in. As soon as you open the door, your eyes are locked in on the many varieties of doughnuts on display. I got a cinnamon twist and it was delicious. Talk about soft and fresh OMG! They offer yeast and cake varieties, so I'm sure you'd find one or two worth the calories lol.

Yelp
I never DON'T eat my doughnuts but I went right after they opened and ordered a six pack that went mostly uneaten. Their cake doughnuts tasted like they'd been sitting around for several days, I had one bite of each and left them alone. The cruller was a bit better but had no real flavor. The yeast doughnut was by far the best and I heard good things about their fritters but was told they weren't ready yet.

Yelp
We had a hankering for Donuts, and wanted to try a different place than chains. I saw good reviews for Donut World, and was curious about their donuts. It's a small shop, but the service was quick and efficient! We got our donuts and went home to enjoy! We got a variety of donuts, and they did not disappoint!!! The sugar twisted donut was still slightly warm - so fresh and soft. Apple fritter was amazing, and totally hit the spot. We have found our new donut place!!

Yelp
A coworker bought a dozen donuts from here and brought them in to share with the team. I tried the strawberry shortcake one and the Oreo one. The strawberry shortcake was my favorite. It definitely was an interesting flavor and I loved the little crumbs on top. Maybe because they were bought after 12:30pm, but they didn't really taste fresh. They kind of tasted a tiny bit stale (like they were sitting out for a bit). The other reviews here are really good, so I'm willing to give this place another shot.

Yelp
Best Donut and experience in Greensboro. Why go anywhere else. If they had fancy coffees drinks like their next door neighbor Dunkin would be gonzo.

Jeremy B.

Yelp
The classic donut shop. Don't be fooled by cheap imitations, this establishment is the real deal. It's the type of place you can get a donut, a cup of joe and strike up a conversation with a fellow donut enthusiast rather easily. Or read the paper, and glance up every once in a while to watch the world go by. A "homey" vibe is what I get when I walk through the doors Always greeted with a smile. Friendly, attentive and polite. That is the staff in a nutshell. The customer service is top tier. You might find yourself stumped when it comes to picking a dozen. Variety is a strong suit here. If you find yourself in this situation go with 12 glazed donuts. Keep it simple.

Yelp
I happened to be in Greensboro and needed to grab something.....I used to have donut Friday and brought it back today. The place was well recommended so I stopped in to this clean shop and the owner was there serving and got a half dozen mixed donuts for $10. They were so tasty and I would recommend this place.

Merritt K.

Yelp
Despite what others have written, there are NO vegan options here. All the reviews are amazing and I'm sure they're good but I wasn't able to try them.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely awesome donuts. We had the glazed donuts - really good. The maple bacon was even better. Hands down, the apple fritter is the best we've had.

Yelp
If you want a fluffy, soft, delectable donut, please stop by donut world. Everyone in there was so friendly, even the customers! A dozen donuts is $11.99 and I have no regrets. They have the bar and twists donuts that cost $1.49 each and the schmancy choices, like the Apple fritter, that are $1.99 each. On top of the dozen donuts I shared with my family, I also had an apple fritter. Everyone loved the donuts. I had a maple raised donut and biting into that donut was like biting into a soft cloud. It was perfect, moist, fluffy, soft and my family laughed at my happy dance that came along with eating that donut. It was THAT good! The apple fritter was great as well, good amount of apples, cinnamon and glaze. The gentleman that was ordering before me said I'd be back the next day. Did I go back!? Idk, wait for my next review, that's half the fun!

Lindsay H.

Yelp
The donuts are so yummy and fresh! They had such a wide variety which made it hard to choose because they all look so delicious Love their fun branding and the donut box design. Will definitely be returning!
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
These donuts were amazing! The consistency and fluffiness of these are honestly the perfect texture! I was in and out in no time, there was a large selection of donuts, cinnamon rolls, donut holes to choose from. They also were really reasonably priced especially for the quality. I got all 4 donuts/cinnamon buns/twist and a bottled water and I want to say it was only $7 or something.

Yelp
What a wonderful person and store. Have always been a big fan of a chain with the best glazed donut-- however this lovely person is especially exceptional At her craft. Apple fritters- best have ever had. Actual apples and light dough with perfect glaze, fresh and not imported. GET THEM. The donuts are disappearing before could get the full picture because YES - that good. Please visit if you get the opportunity will display what is left of or orgasmic ones now.

Jay B.

Yelp
stopped here for the first time in a bit to get some donuts to take for someone so I didn't eat any, but dang these donuts got tiny. like mini donuts now. looked like enough room in the dozen box for a few more. whatever

Aleatha H.

Yelp
Delicious fresh donuts & such sweet, friendly service. Donut World is worthy of it's accolades.
google avatar

Yelp
Small Ma & Pa shop, simple yet -very delicious! They got the basics -cakes, raise, cinna rolls, fritters...etc but they also have some fun yummy specials that varies day-to-day or week-to-week. Did someone say CROISSANT?! YES! They serve croissants now so get in & get your fix. Feel free to tag or follow their instagram handle @donutworlddaily for new items and updates!

Yelp
What are you all missing out on?!? The building likely keeps everyone away but I found this one day after getting fed up with Krispy Kreme running out of apple fritters. If you sell out of something every day first thing, maybe you should start stocking more. I've been in this place multiple times and it is always stocked with a wide variety of donuts, at slightly cheaper prices than KK. The coffee is hot and good. My favorite is the apple fritter but their cinnamon donut is massive. Lots of good choices!
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
I will write the same review for both of the Greensboro locations I've tried--they are both fantastic and offer great coffee on top of amazing donuts and fritters! Right now they are the best donuts in Greensboro, hands down! I love everything I've tried and I have tried a bunch! I often grab 2 dozen for my Sunday School students and they all love them. The only competition is Granny's in High Point (haven't tried their 2 locations in Kernersville or Oak Ridge) but the coffee gives Donut World even footing! Donut miss either location. I apologize for that pun. No, wait, I don't!
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
Amazing donuts!!!!. I slid in there right around closing because I was wanting something sweet and I went for the chocolate covered and the cinnamon sugar. They were both great. 100% would go again
google avatar

Fred B.

Yelp
Wow, they got it all - Cake, Glazed, Jelly Filled, Cream Filled, Chocolate Coated, Bear Claws, a monster Cinnamon Bun, and the very best Apple Fritters I've ever had. The quality is outstanding, and the pricing is very reasonable - I picked up 6 donuts and a fritter for just over $7. Hard to not drop by one of their locations on the weekend!

Yelp
Great donuts! Moving to Greensboro, I missed all my Los Angeles donut shops from 24hr Randy's in Inglewood to 24hr YumYum in Midcity. I'm happy to have walked into Donut World and get a smell of what's going on. Super clean spot and very friendly service! No complaints here. We had Glazed Twist, Strawberry Sprinkles Cake donut, Double Chocolate Cake, Maple, Boston Creme, Apple Fritter and Chocolate glazed!!ALL PERFECTLY SOFT SWEET AND DELISH! Unlike Krispy Kreme they aren't greasy eggy tasting if that's your thing. Not at all like Dunkin with the horrible dry donut and cheap icing that stays in the bag when you pull out the donut‍ Definitely returning and hoping it is the same way next time!

Wendy j.

Yelp
Ok so I live in Archdale NC and when I visit my parents during the month in Roanoke Rapids NC, they always ask for donuts, I usually stop at Grannies in HP, this particular day I stopped at Donut World and I am sooooo glad I did! They were super fresh, not overly sweet and my parents loved them!! I would definitely recommend.. Thank You Donut World for all you do

A S.

Yelp
I am surprised not ranked higher. Supporting local. Very good donuts. Hard-working awesome lady behind the display case.
google avatar

Aaron F.

Yelp
Very nice donut place. Good prices, great selection. I normally prefer buttermilk based doughnuts and a majority of the options were cake donuts, but I wasn't disappointed. The cake was light and moist, not too heavy, and very flavorful. Frostings weren't overly sweet and balanced well with the donut. I would definitely go again and DEFINITELY prefer them over the Krispy Kreme down the block! Shop local!
google avatar

Yelp
Went to Donut World on Battleground for the first time this morning, and will definitely be back. Had a cream-filled chocolate-glazed and a raised-and-glazed -- both were outstanding -- and the service was friendly and helpful. And since no one has mentioned it yet in their reviews, almost all of their donuts are vegan! Highly recommended; I will never set foot in Krispy Kreme again!

Yelp
Alright stop whatcha doin' 'cause I'm about to ruin The image and the style that ya used to. === Was Shock G foreshadowing the existence of this perfect doughnut shop when he uttered these words back in 1990? Donut World has the best doughnuts in the Triad. This is a scientific fact (see the research in the latest issue of the Journal of the American Association of Doughnutry). They burst onto the scene with their first store on West Market back in 2010. In the land of Krispy Kreme, it is Lean Ly's sweet shop that handily reigns supreme, raising the bar when it comes to that sugary Ouroboros known as the doughnut. One bite of these decadent doughnuts would make Gollum toss the One Ring aside like yesterday's garbage and spend the next few centuries gorging himself inside Donut World instead (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/donut-world-greensboro?select=qAmlNb3dDLflv8E_wKbhBA#qAmlNb3dDLflv8E_wKbhBA). === I look funny, But yo I'm makin' money, see So yo world, I hope you're ready for me. === The apple fritter deserves a review unto itself. It's not a pretty pastry - a lumpy, amorphous mass of dough, apple chunks and glaze - but at the same time, it's one of the most beautiful things these eyes have ever witnessed. Just take my money, DW. Every type of doughnut I've had here has been sublime. Even the standard varieties that look as though they'll taste just like their counterparts from KK and DD, from Harris Teeter and other supermarkets, or from every other indie doughnut shop, are just better in every way. Other than the apple fritter, I highly recommend the buttermilk doughnuts, but really, you can't go wrong here. Doughnuts have become something of a fad in recent years, riding a junk food wave with frozen yogurt, cupcakes and bacon. In Atlanta, there are countless doughnut boutiques vying for a space in the pastry pantheon, but despite inventive flavor combinations and unusual offerings, none of the many I've tried - NOT ONE - comes close to matching Donut World when it comes to quality and flavor. Donut World has expanded like crazy since opening the first shop just 3 years ago. There are now locations (franchised, I presume) in High Point and Burlington, and now that a High Point Road shop has opened months after another appeared on Randleman Road, that makes 4 in Greensboro. === Hey yo fat girl, come 'ere. Are ya ticklish? Yeah, I called ya fat. Look at me, I'm skinny It never stopped me from gettin' busy I'm a freak I like the girls with the boom I once got busy in a Burger King bathroom === It's OK, ladies... We like a little extra boom. Just down the road, across from the Burger King, is the Krispy Kreme. Walking distance from DW, even! Now that takes balls. If you really want a hot original glazed from KK to help with those curves, then by all means, head toward the bright red sign. After all, Donut World doesn't have the late-night hours of KK, so when you're craving a doughnut at midnight, it's not really an option. But if it's daytime and you want a serious doughnut fix, then get your humps over to Donut World and pick up two or three. For an added treat, walk or drive to the Cook Out just down the street and enjoy your doughnut with that shake. I know I will. Who's up for Gutfest '13? Overall, 9/10.
google avatar

Christina G.

Yelp
You should not read this review. You should just go to Donut World. Awesome homemade donuts. Yeast ones. Glazed ones. Filled ones. The other location is better, in my opinion, because it seems to have more variety. Also I've been told the lack of refrigeration at this location makes it impossible for them to offer certain types of filling. When I got my half-dozen the other week, they were also OUT of three different types, which left me doubling up on some of the ol' reliables (blueberry cake for one). The gal working also kept looking at me like I have three heads. So I'm selective with my sweets -- so sue me! ;)

Shannon A.

Yelp
The employees/owners are lovely people and the donuts are delicious. So many choices! Maple-bacon, apple fritters, chocolate glazed etc. I highly recommend this place! Perhaps the best reason to support them: they donate donuts to the homeless. A wonderful business that gives back to the community!
google avatar

Al S.

Yelp
Best donuts!! The Devils food cake with chocolate frosting are the best!!

Nancy P.

Yelp
Great doughnuts and the guy behind the counter even got real half and half out of the fridge for my coffee.
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
You just can't beat a good Donut World fritter or doughnut. Fresh made every day, just great...especially with a cup of coffee.
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
I HATE DONUT WORLD!!! They are ruining my diet! I am addicted to their donuts and find my car wheel inexplicably turning into their parking lot on a regular basis now. Help! My all-time favorite is the maple old fashioned and thankfully I haven't been able to find any in town for years. But then here comes Donut World! Drat! And the chocolate ones are just as good! And they make some kind of things that look like little pillows. They're good too! Arghhhhhh! Stay tuned for my reviews, I suppose I'll be reviewing Jenny Craig or Weight Watcher's soon!
google avatar

Inez E.

Yelp
Great, fresh, homemade style donuts. Loved by my kids. Buttermilk is like breakfast cake. Very homemade tasting. Try this out!

Carl M.

Yelp
Best donuts around. Slightly less sweet than Krispy Kreme but fluffier. So good! I'm a big fan of the original & Boston cream, my partner likes the apple fritters and buttermilk donuts. Everything is amazing!
google avatar

Regan F.

Yelp
Friendly staff, freshly baked and so yummy. We came in just before they closed for the night. We were worried the doughnuts would be old and stale, but they were absolutely soft and sweet. We had a blueberry & a chocolate sprinkled. Took an old fashioned and a chocolate cake donut for my dad. We will return. Sorry Krispy Kreme.
google avatar

Jim K.

Yelp
It's blasphamy for a Southerner to love anyone's doughnuts better than Krispy Kreme, but Donut World has the best doughnuts I've ever tasted! Though not a doughnut, their Apple Fritter is the best pastry in Greensboro. Totally addictive. As a friend told me "Their apple fritter is better two days old than any other pastry fresh." All of their doughnuts are fantastic. And a great selection. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
I'm a fan of Donut World mainly because it's a tried and true experience! This location is no different, except for the fact that it is perhaps cleaner than the other. Donut selection later in the morning after the rush is still very good. The Donuts themselves are fabulous and seemingly always fresh! I believe they'll still be around after some of the more expensive newbies are gone!
google avatar

Jenny B.

Yelp
Wow, is all i can say, the donuts are fresh and delicious. I got a creme filled, apple fritter, and sour creme. all of them are so good. worth the trip to greensboro!
google avatar

Damien P.

Yelp
I was expecting something big. Like best donuts you ever ate following the rating on this one. Dissapointed. I seriously don't see any diff with this place and others donuts place around. The place is not really clean either, donuts don't taste any better than other places. I wanted to get a cappuccino with it, machine was broken. They don't test their stuff the morning until somebody come and ask for it and realize it's broken. I just put 2* instead of 1* because they offered me an additional juice for the inconvenience, but def not the best place for donuts.
google avatar

Sandra H.

Yelp
If you combine Krispie Kreme & Dunkin Donuts you get the perfect donut....that's what Donut World has! Yummy!

Fred L.

Yelp
Wonderful family run business. We've taken our children here every Birthday morning since they were old enough for donuts, and we visit about once a week. The apple fritter, bear claw, and chocolate chip are some of our favorites.
google avatar

Randy S.

Yelp
This place is keeping me from being completely dessert free in my diet. I'm so in love with their apple fritters that i can't pass by without grabbing a bagful. Plenty of apple pieces lurk inside the moist interior, while the crunchy exterior is glazed with a light frosting. The batter has just the right amount of cinnamon to offset the sweetness of the glaze.
google avatar

Dave M.

Yelp
Great donuts and worth the trip. Only reason I can't give them 5 stars is because of my latest visit, which was this morning. They were actually out of regular glazed at 10am. Out of regular glazed?? How could a donut place be out of regular glazed? Could you imagine if KK was ever out of regular glazed?? Anyway, shocking and disappointed, but I'll give them one mulligan.....
google avatar

Brandon K.

Yelp
Clerk charged us more for donuts without telling us about the price difference. When asked about the price he said "they haven't updated the pricing thats displayed but yeah, I charged you more." A minute later my 5 year old dropped two donut holes on the floor and when I asked if he'd mind replacing the two he said he'd need to charge me because we wasnt Allowed to replace the two dropped donut holes. The fact he Did charge us more than the listed prices without even mentioning, followed up by not offering to help when my kid drop two of the little donuts was just a crappy Customer Service experience. The donuts were good, but lots of places have good donuts. The clerk was useless and having just moved here, I'll find another place for my family to go to.
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
I love these donuts. Classic flavors done consistently well. Now that I've moved away I crave the convenience and flavor of Donut World on a weekly basis. I find Krispy Kreme to be too sweet; these are just right. The staff is always patient and friendly and from what I can tell, the kitchen and dining area are clean and neat. Don't expect any fancy latte making or the modern foodie experience. This is Donut World, classic donuts done right without all the frills of other bakeries or coffee shops.

Thomas B.

Yelp
This is our favorite donut spot in the triad. My wife and I visit this Donut World every Sunday after church for fresh donut and a cup of coffee. The staff is very friendly and the donuts absolutely delicious.
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
Cool little spot to grab some donuts. The donuts are large and have a home made taste to it if you are in to that.

Tracy F.

Yelp
Krispy Kreme was renovating and were transporting doughnuts from the High Point Rd location, it was gonna take around 25 minutes so we went up the street (less than 5 minutes away) to Donut World instead of waiting. I'm so glad we did. I think they are much better than Krispy Kreme.
