The Best Doughnut Shops in Detroit | Eater Detroit

"A bite of Americana in East Dearborn, this shop specializes in classic fried pastries, including blueberry cake, red velvet, and honey-dipped doughnuts, plus eclairs and cherry fritters. The shop has been around since 1966, making it one of Detroit’s longest-standing doughnut destinations. Donutville is open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, so whenever your craving hits, it’ll be waiting." - Danny Palumbo

Google
Came in middle afternoon and they were out of a few types of donuts I would have loved to try. But that being said, they still had a lot of choices available. I ended up getting a dozen donuts (my kids picked some of their faves). I will say, not the best donuts I’ve ever had, but they weren’t terrible. They were all a bit on the dry side. Do I need to drive 40 minutes to come back? Probably not, but if it was right around the corner, I’d probably be back. The guy who helped us was super nice and friendly. And the architecture and style is retro and fun.

Google
Donuts were delicious but some seemed not so fresh, server was very kind and helpful in this great atmosphere. Donuts are very well priced and lots of variety. Definitely try the honey glazed donut!

Google
I got their cherry fritter. It was huge!!! Very soft and delicious. Full of cherry flavoring. My hubby got a chocolate Bavarian. His was delicious too. Great customer service. Very clean and nice establishment.

Google
Doughnut Ville is seriously amazing. The donuts are so light and fluffy that they don’t even hurt your stomach — you can literally eat like 10 and not feel heavy at all. Everything tastes fresh and not overly greasy or sweet in a bad way. The place itself is very old school and tiny, but that’s honestly part of the charm — it feels like a cute little shop straight out of the 60s. The atmosphere is simple and cozy, and the employees are super nice and welcoming. Definitely one of those hidden gem spots I’ll keep coming back to

Maram F.

Google
I don’t usually write reviews, but Mariam honestly deserves one. Every time I walk into the shop, she’s the first person to smile and actually make you feel welcome. She doesn’t just take your order she pays attention, makes recommendations, and somehow remembers what people like. The donuts are always good, but Mariam makes the whole experience better. She works fast, keeps the line moving, and still stays super patient even when it gets busy. You can tell she actually cares about her job and the customers. If you ever stop by, hope you get helped by Mariam. She’s literally the reason I keep coming back. Amazing customer service, super friendly, and just overall a great person to have working there.

Google
Kids love the donuts from here! Delicious Only thing is when I want a Decaf Coffee they always say they don’t have any. But there is one specific young man who always offers some fresh decaf I just need to come by when he is there! Now I know to peak in there to see if he is there because I know everyone is else would just turn me around. I understand it may not sell as regular coffee. But it is a coffee/ donut location.

Google
Great place for being open late and offering a traditional American diner-like experience. Donuts were all tasty and there’s plenty of options throughout the day. Plenty of seating and kind service. Come here for a late night treat.

Joshua L.

Google
First, I love this place (and I was a GM of Dunkin'!). Donuts actually made in-house, multiple batches a day... can't beat that. However, I was let down due to there being no milk available for my son. They were also out of a few kinds of donuts but that's to be expected; they're awesome and I arrived well after the last batch had been brought out. Still recommend Donutville over any other donut store within 50 miles!

Yelp
Went in here to grab a dozen donuts on the way to a friends house. I went in the afternoon, so supply was a little picked over and it probably wasn't the freshest. However, the donuts were very good. Got a pretty nice assortment. The jelly filled glazed stick and the glazed blueberry were my favorite. The powdered sugar was good too. Very reasonably priced. The kid behind the counter was helpful. Will return if I'm out that way. Not much of an ambiance. Just grab and go

Yelp
Donutville U.S.A., aka Jude the Obscure I'm aware of the whispers. The fevered group texts. The corkboards webbed with yarn and Polaroids. Somewhere in a dim corner of a certain Woodbridge drinking establishment, someone's hunched over pivot tables labeled "LIKELY SUSPECTS," pounding Rancors the way a film noir detective downs bad diner coffee at midnight - grim, twitchy, and with something to prove. And to that I say: Bitch, please. You're not even close. But sure, let's play. Since everyone seems so very determined to unmask me, here are three official clues to help you on your deranged little scavenger hunt: 1. I am currently banned from The Telway for floating a late-night trade proposal involving a dozen sliders and a light, non-binding "just the tip" situation. Apparently, they don't barter. Apparently, *I* am the problem. 2. I was briefly an understudy for Mrs. Claus during Greenfield Village's Candlenights. I was let go for "excessive improvisation" and swearing in character. 3. If you microwave a Faygo Redpop to a rolling boil while perfectly reciting the lyrics to ICP's Santa's a Fat Bitch backwards, it opens a time portal directly to the Gibraltar Trade Center, circa 1991. The air smells like vinyl dashboard cleaner and knockoff cologne. You may see yourself as a child. Don't engage. Anyway, until the smoke clears, I've decided to take temporary refuge in pastries. Donuts don't interrogate. Donuts don't speculate. Donuts don't need to know who you are...they already understand. So let's talk about Donutville. Donutville Review: They had donuts. I got a dozen. They were all good. Service was nice. P.S. I could've revealed myself where Lex marks the spot... handed over the truth like a warm apple fritter. But someone chose plausible deniability over decency. So for now, I keep my distance. And my receipts.
google avatar

Yana G.

Yelp
The donuts can be touch and go. The last time I had them they were a bit salty. Service was good though and the ambiance was late donuts and a groovy place.
google avatar

Holly W.

Yelp
Quick stop to Donutville USA. Nothing special, just an old school donut shop. No interesting flavors. Their regular flavors were nothing to write home about. It's ok, but nothing special.
google avatar

Alex Z.

Yelp
Solid solid donuts. Wish they had a little more variety but great all around. Would happily eat them again.
google avatar

Angie B.

Yelp
This is one of the coolest looking (vintage inspired) eating establishments in Michigan; truly like stepping back in time 50+ years. To be fair, have not been there in several years, but I recall the coconut flaked donut was delicious; however, my visit was late-night after a Wings game and they did not have fresh hot coffee. I think that should be a must for a donut shop, up until closing - perhaps that's changed

Kory R.

Yelp
ZERO STARS! Hands down one of thee worst places around. You have no choice but to wait 30 minutes to be served. It doesn't matter the volume of people inside or what time of day. Staff is a complete joke

Andray B.

Yelp
They might have top 5 donut atleast in southeast Michigan. Absolutely better than any of the chain donut spots. So than you compare to the small mom and pop shops it surpass most
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
The donuts we got were OK! I think our OK experience was due partially to visiting after lunchtime, around 1 p.m. When we arrived, there were only a few varieties of donuts left, and the ones that were available were a little dry and tired. I'd like to come back sometime in the morning, when I'm assuming the selection would be greater and the donuts would be fresher. I got a "Stick," which was basically a glazed old-fashioned donut. It was thick and dense -- the kind of donut you'd pick to dunk in coffee, if you were into that sort of thing. Because it was an end-of-day donut, it was a little too thick and dry. When I was there, they also had cherry and lemon filled, buttercream, coconut and jelly iced. They usually have at least a dozen more flavors. The decor in Donutville U.S.A. is exactly what you'd think it would be: retro and kitschy, like stepping into a 1960s coffee shop. Speaking of coffee, they have that here, which they serve in nondescript white styrofoam cups in three sizes.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
We got a dozen assortment of the yummy toasted coconut, sweet crunchy chocolate topped with lemon pie pillows of love and fluffy goodness, strawberry filled and chocolate topping glazed donuts today and the consensus from Sara and Mark and Myself were these were far better than the Yum Yum Donuts, Dunkin , Tim Horton's for sure, but incredible love and respect for Roberto's on Van Born. The winner of best Donut in The area by far has to be Donutville USA hand's down. But compared to what is being done with donuts around the country it lags behind what they're doing in San Diego. The service here you can't get anywhere else.

Yelp
Friendly staff. A very large selection of Donuts & sweet treats. Have visited this place several times over the years & will continue to come here.

Yelp
These mf know how to make a donut !!!! Amazing nuts of dough and great nice workers. Been open for a long time.

Yelp
Stopped by this spot for breakfast on a Monday morning before a trip outside the city. Cool dinner outside with a big donut declaring it's 24 hour status. Inside not many people, so was able to order immediately. Opted for a Chocolate Donut and Jelly Donut ($3 total). The donut cake portion didn't taste all that fresh. The icing was grainy which is never a good sign. The ratio of jelly to the cake wasn't very good, though the jelly itself was sweet. At least the seating was plentiful and clean. Woman behind the counter wasn't very friendly but was quick. Probably wouldn't come back here, but they're open late.

Yelp
Donutville USA has some really good donuts in the area. It's easy to find just off the freeway a bit and plenty of parking. You can't miss the iconic sign. Service is nice here and they want you to be satisfied. They box them gently so none get damaged. My favorite sour cream old fashioned were some for the record books. Large, fried and glazed perfectly. They also had them filled with jelly too! Hats off to the seasoned bakers, they take this seriously and I could taste their pride in every bite! The filled raised donuts were fluffy as pillows and the dough was perfect and not overworked in the mixer or on the bench. The smooth custard donuts were generously filled or as we bakers like to say... "whoever's filling these has a heavy hand!" Lol. The dozen donut box had a hefty weight to it. Price point is typical price you'd pay for a dozen. These are serious donuts and not for the faint of heart! One slight drawback. The later in the evening you get there, the selection dwindles. The donuts are fast to fly off their shelves and I can see why. Nonetheless, we were still able to get all our favorites at 6pm. Donutville is the perfect name for this place. Any donut you pick is going to be Devine!

Yelp
I think the blonde girl working today seriously hated her job. Walked in, was welcomed with the worst look as if I was inconveniencing her break time maybe? I let the girl know that I want a dozen variety donuts. She sighs and gets the empty box ready. Each donut i point out she rolls her eyes at me and says "what else". The lack of customer service does not stop there. After my box of donuts starts to look full, I ask how many are in my box. She repeats my question, I say yes how many are in my box? She tells me 8. At this point my variety box is barely closing, so I decide this is enough. She rings me up and tells me my total is $16. The sign behind her reads "one dozen donuts $12". I ask her if buying a dozen donuts would be cheaper. She tells me a dozen would be $24. I then ask her how 8 donuts equals $16. She tells me a regular dozen is $12. I got 3 "special" donuts which are considered double price. This still does not add up. I end up leaving because the girls attitude was just so gruesome it ruined my appetite. I also watched her long untamed blonde hair fondle through the donuts as she was picking them for other customers. gross.

Marisa W.

Yelp
The donuts are really good here. However, there have been a lot of times I would go in and there was very little to choose from...this would be late morning or early afternoon. I would end up walking out without getting anything. They do not keep their trays stocked. A lot of times I was told they wouldn't have more donuts until 7 pm. I'm not going to make another trip back there. I really wish they would keep their trays stocked better.

Makeyla J.

Yelp
I came in last Saturday and this very kind young man had great service. He was very sweet and polite I can't remember his name but it was something like ayman. He was very polite and I asked for a dozen and he was very patient as it was my first time there . I would definitely go and try that place out because it's great. Again the service was great and the employee was very sweet and very clean about his job . Donutville is great !!! And so is their donuts !
google avatar

Luayy A.

Yelp
I have to say getting a deep fried classic treat that has been around for many many years it says the time apart from other donut shops that have closed their doors I believe and Donville USA is really good at what they do if you want something just classic no nostalgia they have different flavours of donuts, but I would say they are good for what they do the ambience classic donut coffee shop walk up to the counter you know have a conversation and you know grab a box of donuts and take it to the office or whatever you travel through stop by don't be shy I mean, the service is fantastic. It's like with Will you want they get you going and if you want coffee, they have coffee if you want just a Bearclaw or or do you want a cinnamon roll? Whatever I feel they care about customers.
google avatar

Ranyia T.

Yelp
Staff is nice, the donuts are great when they have them. You need to come early since they usually run out of the good flavors.
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
I was lucky to be in the area during the morning. There was a wide selection of still fresh donuts available. Whenever I try a donut shop for the first time, I order a simple glazed donut. This is my baseline to judge how good their offerings are. I also had a chocolate glazed. Both were fresh and delicious.
google avatar

Ken K.

Yelp
I visited for the first time earlier today, Saturday September 7th, around 11:10am. The young lady behind the counter kept running her fingers through her hair, moving her hair, etc. She would use one hand, and then use her other hand. This was constant. All I did was order six items, but she sure played with her hair a lot during this time. How could someone in the food service business behave this way? She used no gloves, and the only reason I chose to go forward and purchase the donuts was because she used the wax paper sheets to pick the items up. Unfortunately, my wife was grossed out, and wouldn't eat any donuts. Also, the young lady was very uninspiring and didn't greet us when we arrived or smile at all. Seemed almost like we were bothering her. I would probably go back and try one more time, but I hope they would have someone else being the face of this iconic business to present a better image.
google avatar

Yelp
No frills, straight up delicious, fresh donuts. You really don't have to do much to impress when your donut game is at 100.
google avatar

Yelp
Donuts were just ok. I thought they would have been better. Coffee was decent though.

Yelp
The best fresh doughnuts in Detroit! My husband insists on stopping here when we are in the area.

Yelp
Cute mom and pop shop that transports you to the past:) The doughnuts are fresh and made daily. I like them best hit so try to get there early

Yelp
Be careful driving up and down Ford Road late at night. If the cops don't get you, the Donutville. But you won't mind if this donut gets you, or at least, you shouldn't. This is my favorite donut shop in all of Michigan - partly because it's really good and partly because it's open 24 hours and you can't really beat that. Also partly because I haven't tried a lot of Michigan donuts but anyway. Service is pretty good - although the regulars might be perplexed at what you are doing in their place and why, especially if you look like I do (flexes) (tosses hair) but you probably don't, so you may not have that problem. Prices are absolutely dirt cheap and coffee is really good. Donuts are yummy. If they were a little more expensive they might be somewhere between 4 and 5 but at these prices and being available 24 hours, this is definitely a five-star place and one which I would send people coming to Detroit to visit. It's basically what Donuts used to be like and what Donut shops were, traditionally. I'm all about it. Come and give this lovely cheap coffee, and these yummy donuts, a try for yourself. It's not fancy and perfect like Dough of Brooklyn or DB3 of Evanston (Chicago burbs) but it's top notch and full of tradition and history, from the days before Yelp and Insta and "Foodies" - of which I am not one. While you're in town, you must try Khanafa from Masri Sweets, and some Detroit Style pizza slices, perhaps from BC's or Primo's in Allen Park/Downriver. So what I'm basically saying is... Donut miss this place.

Deettra B.

Yelp
here it is 1:45pm and barely no donuts then when they do have them they taste so dry and old like they were made the day before and set out the next day smh just close this place already if they are not going to go back 24 so they can have fresh donuts like they use to have smh im so over coming here between the hours of 2-5pm and no donuts fresh are out smh
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
This place needs to just call it quits. No donuts at noon on a Sunday. They said they would not be ready for 2 hours. Guess they just decided they did not feel like making donuts that morning in a 24 hour donut shop. Other people are having the same issue so this was not a one time thing. There is no way they were fully stocked that morning and sold out by noon on a weekend when many people are out later than they would be on a weekday. You have all night to make donuts. If you do not know how to keep product stocked at a time when it is likely to be busy then it would be best to have regular business hours. I went pretty far out of the way to try this place. I would not stop in again unless I happened to be driving by.

Adam S.

Yelp
I love this place. They have great costumer service and there donuts are to does for I go there every once in a while and they always treat me with respect the girl that works there is the sweetest. Definitely recommend I love the Classic look.

Adam R.

Yelp
Great donuts! All went down really well; didn't give me a bad feeling in my stomach from too much sugar or fake stuff. Realllllly gruff customer service. Felt like we pissed them off just by walking in. Mind you, if was nearly dead, aside from a few old blokes on their stools bar side. 3/5. It is what it is.
google avatar

Yelp
Best classic donuts in Metro Detroit! Everyone sleeps on their fritters and muffins but they're actually awesome.
google avatar

Yelp
Sorry but the donut I got was not good at all. I got a chocolate frosted and it tasted stale and old. Not good at all. Save yourself a trip unless u don't really mind the quality. Just wasn't there for me.

Yelp
Best Donuts and coffee in Dearborn. No other comes close. Been having Donutville USA donuts and coffee my whole life and they haven't changed. Give them your business, especially during these tough times. Treat yourself to the best donuts Dearborn has to offer.
google avatar

Annette J.

Yelp
Yum! I love a good doughnut and Donutville USA makes a mean deep fried treat, let me tell you! They've got a variety of your standard flavors--powdered sugar, peanut, buttermilk, etc etc. All fresh and ready for your consumption! They're $1 a pop which may be a little steep compared to other joints but they're fab. The space is untouched from the day it was built many moons ago. Big glass windows, counters for sitting with coffee and a doughnut, all in hues of orange and brown. The huge sign outside beckoning folks in from their commutes down Ford Road. Would you believe that I've never tried the coffee here? For shame. So I can't comment on that. But the doughnuts--they are great. Try to pop by when I can. So much better to support a spot like this that has been truckin' along since the 60s than another DD down the street.
google avatar

Nijole T.

Yelp
Great sign, cool retro feel and what I love most 24 hours of fresh and yummy donuts! No donut shops please me more than those that are open 24 hours a day! The people were nice, alot of older gentlemen drinking coffee is always a good sign, they look like they have been sitting there the last 30 years! Since they bake around the clock there was a great selection but what caught my eye was the day olds a dozen for $3! Being stingy AND greedy, I chose 2 bags with different donuts and she told me anything before 12 pm gets packed and sold for cheap. Leaving with 24 donuts for $6 I was a happy camper off to my hotel room for a dinner of champions, cable tv, a bottle of milk and next to me in bed 2 dozen donuts. It was a yummy, crummy mess and I loved every bit. Unfortunatly they were still so soft and fresh (not really a bad thing) that they crushed against each other and were not pretty. I didn't really care since I was not sharing or showing anyone, they tasted fine, great variety and all were slighty above average. Not mindblowing, but not bad and at that price I cannot complain, better than frm any grocery store or Dunkin Donuts.
google avatar

Nicole E.

Yelp
Pickings were slim by 1:30pm, we were told to come later in the afternoon for fresh and more options, that wasn't going to happen. I still tried the long custard, the custard tasted okay, but the dough was very average, too big of a donut for my liking, but the rectangle is a popular shape for the custard. I tried the sourdough, the glaze was rather sparse and the dough was still very bland and crumbly. The blueberry tasted pretty good, but the dough was once again dry and crumbled and was too dense. I still think the donuts at Dutch Girl Donuts, in Detroit are bar none the best in Michigan I have ever had.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
I went in here for the first time on a Sunday and it was pretty busy. I picked up 6 donuts, some donut holes, and a coffee. All donuts were super fresh and were very tasty, especially the donut holes. The coffee was also very good. The service from the gentleman behind the counter was 5 star, he was very friendly. Prices were very reasonable. I can't wait to head back here for more treats!
google avatar

Zara H.

Yelp
I love the fact that this cute little donut shop is open 24/7. I grew up in the Dearborn area and my dad would always favor this place and bring a box home on the weekends after work for me and my brothers. I definitely have some nostalgic connection to this little shop. I've moved outta Dearborn but still drive all the way for a yummy donut and quick coffee. Lately it's been more so on Saturday nights, I just chill at the window seat stools with the Bf enjoying our coffees and signature sprinkle donuts. The coffee is fresh everytime I grab some and just as dark as I need it. The sweet older lady and others there are always very nice and attentive, they seem like very good hardworking folks. I love seeing small family owned businesses like this thrive and stay alive for so long. Try them out, they're always busy and have a full house in the AM and brunch time and there's reason for it.
google avatar

Christina W.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite donut shops ever! The donuts are amazing! I came out to teach a technology class and my students introduced me to this place. Highly recommend!

Sam M.

Yelp
Don't run a neon sign all day long that says "24 hours" if you're gonna close at 11 lol smh we showed up 4 minutes past 11 and the place is PACKED with donuts, doors already locked, lights already off. Their loss I guess, we were about to go nuts on some late night snacks because we passed it earlier in the day with their GIANT 24 hour donut sign shining through the sky.
google avatar

Shayma H.

Yelp
The donuts are good, and I had been wanting to try their over rated coffee. So I tried the coffee today and it's disgusting. Literally tastes like Hep A (water and ....)
google avatar

Jen B.

Yelp
What's the story here? We tried to go twice. We went one morning and they were empty. We asked if we were too late and they said we were too early. The donuts come out after 4. So we came back at 5. There wasn't any better selection. When do you have to go to get donuts?
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Wow, what a monumental disappointment. I should have paid more attention to the negative reviews, and I would have anticipated my experience. I came in on a Friday at 9am, and they were almost EMPTY of all their doughnuts, at 9am!! I do not understand how that is possible, as the doughnuts I did get were not that good, but that's only half of it. When I arrived there were about 4 people in line ahead of me, not that bad I thought. As I waited and watched the small selection getting smaller and smaller, a man behind the counter asked if anyone was getting coffee. I didn't realize this was a way to skip the line for doughnuts. After the woman ordered her coffee she then got to load up a box of doughnuts to my surprise and disappointment. This happened yet again for the next guy, who was ordering his doughnuts as I reached the counter. As I was looking over my pitiful selection I asked the worker if there were anymore in the back. He told me no, this was all they had available. Well, that was a flat out lie, as I watched the man serving the line jumper walk into the back and fill up the line jumping asshat's box with what I assume were the "secret" stash of doughnuts. I ordered 6 doughnuts that were woefully unremarkable. They had almost zero flavor, and tasted like they were sitting there for over 24 hours. It appears they only give a crap about their regulars, and have zero interest in retaining new customers. Save your time and money and go somewhere that wants to welcome the new blood flowing into Detroit. They can keep their stale doughnuts and crap service. Too many new places opening up all around them. Let them fall behind, as they have little interest in us.

Yelp
Feels like 1960's when you are in here. No, they didn't decorate this place in 60's theme, it just looks like they haven't renewed their fixtures since 60's. I used to pop in here around 6:00 am for a cup of coffee, the same old guys where hanging out talking to to the wait staff. They seemed to be in no rush, just kicking it back. I always wondered, 'why do get get up so early in the morning and hang out at a donut shop?' Well, their coffee was pretty decent. Not great, just decent. Donut was good.

Yelp
Some of the best donuts around. Cherry cake is my favorite and not many places have it. Also they've been around forever and the box they use to put the dozen in is so stinking cute! The design is probably from when it opened. I like to go at midnight when they are super fresh and they have all the flavors.

Yelp
The donuts are always fresh and delicious. Probably the best red velvet donut I've ever had. They have a large variety of donuts and other baked goods. The prices are cheap, about nine dollars a dozen. These are the only donuts I ever really have a craving for. Beats any donut shop around the area. The customer service is a hit or miss. Sometimes the employees are extremely polite and other times they're just flat out mean. Don't let your shitty attitude ruin paying customers delicious donut experience. Smile, it's contagious!! :)

Yelp
Best place! I used to come here all the time on my way back from school, and now I stop by once in a while on my way back from the gym. They have a big selection of doughnuts and they are cheap. There are also these huge giant pastries that I'm not sure what they are, but any time someone I'm with gets one, we all have to help finish it. Even the regular doughnuts here are considerably larger than your average dunkin or kk. I usually get a french cruller and it is tasty. you can get a cup of coffee and have a seat at the counter. if you come at night, people are weird here. there's always something on the tv that you normally wouldn't watch. service is not that friendly, but you won't care. Oh and it's open 24 hours. Huge plus for people who keep weird hours.
