Montreal’s Food Truck Industry May Be Losing Steam | Eater Montreal

"Often a successful lunch spot, Dorchester Square downtown draws good midday crowds, while other permitted locations are quiet side streets; this contrast helps explain why truck owners say some sites work well for lunch crowds but many are not appealing in terms of visitor traffic. Owners also complain that the city forces trucks to park in very specific areas and forbids them from operating within 50 metres of restaurants, restrictions they say block access to prime pedestrian locations and limit the industry’s ability to find a foothold." - Stephane Lavoie

Beautiful Green Oasis in the Heart of Montreal!" Dorchester Square is such a peaceful escape in downtown Montreal! It’s a beautifully maintained park with lush green lawns, tall trees, and historic statues that make for a perfect backdrop to relax and enjoy the city’s charm. This square is also incredibly family-friendly – plenty of open space for the kids to stretch their legs and explore. We found it an ideal spot for a quick break during our day. The historical monuments and statues added an interesting touch, and even our little ones were intrigued by the stories behind them. Its central location makes it a convenient stop, especially if you’re exploring nearby areas. Highly recommend stopping by for a refreshing break

Beautiful downtown Park. They have bright red, and pink flowers under a well kept statue and well maintained lawn and path. Benches to sit, chat, and some smokers. The park is really nice.

The heartbeat of Montreal can be felt walking through this park whatever the season; benches to sit on during the Summer, striking colors in the Fall, festive lights surround magnificent statues during the holiday season, Spring flowers amongst budding trees announce the end of the Canadian Winter. A must for Montrealers and tourists alike. J'aime ma ville.

Usually, I'm not a fan of city parks, but this one is something special. It's unlike any other I've seen before. It's clean (despite being open 24/7), well maintained, picturesque, peaceful and relaxing despite the fact it's located in the heart of Montreal's bustling commercial center. I was simply seduced by its beauty to have a stroll here and sit down on one of the many benches and take a break from touring the city. There are some historic monuments such as the Boer War Memorial or statue of Sir Wilfrid Laurie, but for me the most eye-catching structure was the fountain on the north part of the park -  it seemed as if someone had cut it in half and I find that very interesting! I can imagine this place buzzing with activity during lunchtime - I would be a regular visitor if I were to work nearby. Speaking of nearby, the Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral is just on the next block, which is worth a visit as well. It's a true hidden gem in the midst of the city's urban landscape. Visited on a Sunday, July 2023.

Dorchester Square in Montreal is a serene oasis in the heart of the city, offering lush greenery and striking monuments. It's a perfect spot for a peaceful stroll or a lunch break outdoors. The well-maintained paths and historical statues add a touch of charm and history to this urban retreat.

This is a beautiful park with statues/sculptures and monuments about the history of Canada. The gardens are well maintained. This park is surrounded by prominent landmarks such as the Sun Life Building, Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral, and the Chateau Champlain hotel. Dorchester Square holds cultural and historical significance, reflecting Montreal's rich heritage and architectural heritage. There are birds, squirrels in this park which are also a kind of attraction to the tourists.

Google
Pretty park, not very quiet since it's right next to the street but very nice to walk through at night when the lights are on.

Google
It is a wonderful place to sit, rest, relax, and enjoy nature. The squirrels will definitely keep you company as they are there in abundance. There are also various places to eat, drink, change money and shopping around.

Yelp
TL;DR/The Short Version: Really pretty urban park. Lots of greenspace, has a paved path and several monuments. More Details: The northern boundary is Dorchester Square St. The southern boundary is Rene Levesque Blvd. The western boundary is Peel St and the eastern boundary is Metcalfe St. It's sometimes confused with Place du Canada/Canada Place which is another urban park directly south. The two are separated by Rene Levesque Blvd. Once upon a time, Dorchester Square and Place du Canada was collectively called Dominion Square. There are several monuments in Dorchester Square: the Tribute to Wilfred Laurier, the Boer War Memorial, the Robert Burns statue and the Lion of Belfort fountain. I was most recently there just after Christmas in 2024 and it was decorated with lights and looked very pretty, especially at night. I never spent much time there when I was living in Montreal, but now I appreciate its beauty more when I go back to Montreal for visits. Review #5 (2025)

Yelp
Square Dorchester, a green oasis in the heart of downtown Montreal...... is a perfect place for strolling and resting. After it was redesigned, it has a look and feel worth of its status as a historic site. The square is surrounded by sumptuous buildings, and is an emblematic and historic site that recalls Montréal's Victorian era. The restored monuments, the new fountain and harmonious landscape design are just a few of the elements that make it beloved by tourists and residents alike. During lunch time, dozens of people eat their lunch on the cute park tables and chairs, benches, or on the grass. There are lots of shaded as well as sunny areas to pick from. It is located across from the Cathedral, so it's easy to find...

Yelp
Square Dorchester is located across Place Du Canada. It is interesting how the two parks have different names. Dorchester Square is a nice and clean park. It has benches and lots of greenery/trees. It is a a park with lots of shade. But no kids play area. It is more for adults in the area to come here for a walk or just sit and relax. It is located diagonally across from Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral. Nice Park.

Yelp
A beautiful park but is being infested by homeless who are using or shall i say abusing the 420. Smells bad at some part and trashes are everywhere on some part and those part are where these abusers are.(i am not mean to homeless but if they dont have the right attitude in life or try to be then..) chairs and tables are available with some vendors who sell coffees

Yelp
A nice garden walk in the middle of the city. With a lot of trees, I feel refreshing after a walk here.

Yelp
The other half of the two parks here, Place Du Canada. Dorchester (officially, "Dominion Square") has more trees and benches compared to the other. And more monuments even though it's about 2/3 the size. Including one to the Boer War and one for Scottish poet Robert Burns. The park is open 24 hours and is a bit of a focal point for pedestrian traffic in the city. It's also well served by the Underground City.

Yelp
I work nearby and this is the best place to eat your lunch on a sunny day (Like today! May 17 2017). Lots of clean benches to sit down with a friend and just eat and talk. I also just love people watching and just enjoying my lunch hour outside. I am very excited for the food trucks to arrive because I have a feeling I'll be there every day.

Yelp
This great parc is located right in front of the Sun Life buidling in between Peel and Metcalfe streets. Dorchester square holds a special place in my heart as I spent countless Friday and Saturday nights there drinking 40s as a youth before going out to any of the local bars or clubs nearby. The parc itself received a huge overhaul in the last year or so which has made it more accessible to normal folk and less accessible for drunks, hobos and drug dealers. Although we are approaching winter, this is still a great place to have a picnic, or just to sit on one of the many benches and enjoy the view of the many statues or buildings in the area. It's also a great place for people watching, for those who like that sort of thing! hehe

Yelp
I visited this place twice during my trip to Montreal. It has ample benches, a few nice statues and plenty of grass for you to have picnics on. However since we are on Yelp now, there was one particular aspect I really liked and that was the fact that it has 3 food trucks (different depending on the day) located their between Monday to Friday and one food truck on weekends. There was one day where I ate from every food truck there. It was a great mix of unhealthy food, slightly less unhealthy Chinese food, and dessert (crepe). Having these food trucks located here is very convenient and makes for a great time. Overall, if I worked in the area, I would just sit here for lunch as it is nice and has some decent greenspace.

Yelp
I had brown-bag lunch with a friend here because it is close to where she worked and the hotel I was staying at. Even at lunch on a Friday in late August it seem really well kept, with lots of people enjoying the last of the sun and grass. Kids were running around and hardly noticed any trash, only a handful of the usual drunk people. If I worked around there I would be brown-bagging it too because how nice it is.

Yelp
I really like this park. As it is renovated, it is very classy and it is very safe. It is a nice quiet place in the heart of downtown. I go here to read with a coffee from Tim's on the corner. Every year there is new flowers and maintained greenery. There is no garbage laying around. The benches are all new. I see people come here to eat their lunch, make long phone calls, and occasionally kids play although it never gets loud. Unlike the Atwater Park, I have never been bothered by any strange men or homeless here.
