After a great barbecue meal at Pody's in Pecos, we were looking for some Mexican and trying to avoid Tex-Mex. We ended up at Dos Compadres, the location in Odessa which was pretty close to our hotel. It is a nice strip mall place and is larger than you would think. It was pretty busy on this Saturday night.
We started with a pureed salsa fresca and the usual restaurant style ships. The salsa had good balance of sweet, tart and salt with a little heat.
We also had an order of chile con queso. This was yellow in color and pretty mild. It could have used both more chile and cheddary cheese flavor but was OK.
Ms T ordered ground beef tacos a la carte. This sounds pretty gringo, but she said the beef was very well seasoned and was very happy with her choice. I had a chile verde dinner which was excellent. The chile verde had good tomatillo content and still tasted of green chile. The pork was tender and juicy, well cooked.
For desert, which we never order, we caved and tried sopapillas. This was no mistake, these are clearly homemade. They were a different style from what we always eat in Santa Fe. Some may find them a bit greasy, but I even added butter and of course honey and then wished I had another one.
This was a very good meal for both of us. The people were very nice and provided good service.
