Restaurant Owners Spent Thousands to Upgrade Their Patios. Now They’re Looking at Empty Tables. | Eater Portland

"Daniel Casto, general manager of Double Dragon, told me the Southeast Portland bar has spent $15,000 on a massive forthcoming covered patio that will include heaters, fire pits, movie projectors, and disco balls; although it can’t be used for at least the next month they are racing to finish it — they’re halfway done — and Casto warned he doesn’t expect indoor service before April and called the lack of meaningful industry-specific government support an “absolute disaster.”" - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

I thought Chow Mein was supposed to have noodles??? this is actually the worst food experience ive had in Lou. $12 for this....

Google
Nice food. A bit salty. Good portions. I added extras for a few dollars more. Worth it. Easy online ordering.

Google
I ordered Szechuan shrimp. There was no spice to the sauce and the Szechuan sauce had no liquid to it and no flavor. I've ate Szechuan all over the United States and this was the worst. However, the portions were very good and the crab rangoon was different than anything I had but it ranks up there in the top two

Google
Ordered two pints! Of fried rice over the phone . After i asked the price she hurried me off the phone . When i got there i was surprised at the fact she ran in two quarters instead . The food is meh. Better is out there.

Google
Highly recommend the Sesame Chicken. This place was my go-to when I was working in Louisville. Out of the three nights a week I was in town, I ate here at least once. Staff are friendly, food is always fresh and delicious, and the portions are generous. I tried several places around town, but this one far outshines the rest. Don’t miss out! This place is great!

Google
I’ve gone to this restaurant multiple times and it NEVER fails, always seasoned right and even if I order 15 minutes before closing their food is STILL good. this is my now most favorite Chinese go to restaurant, yall gained a loyal customer and I will go to only y'all. THE FOOD be SMACKINGGGG

Kyle H.

Google
Very good casual Chinese takeout. Never had any issues and they're always very fast, even with large orders. Not my favorite Chinese place in Louisville, but still a frequent stop.

Google
Best Double Dragon I’ve ever been to! Love their sesame chicken and crab rangoon! Great portions and good price. I keep going back every week!

Yelp
my favorite chinese food spot in Louisville, KY. Very easy online platform for ordering.

Yelp
Terrible customer service! Middle-aged Southeast Asian man answering the phone, taking orders, and checking you out. He was an absolute rude jerk! The food is only mediocre, and cheap, but why be surly!? We customers are job security. BE NICE! I told him he was "not friendly", and he said, "I know!" and banged on about something I didn't understand. No apology.

Yelp
Nestled into the Kroger shopping center on Goss Ave, Double Dragon remains one of the best take out Asian restaurants around. They have the full menu that you would expect at most Chinese restaurants and everything we have ordered here is tasty with some exceptional dishes. We picked up a quick lunch today to bring back to the house to share with friends who are visiting. Ordered 3 shrimp and 3 veggie eggrolls. While they were both tasty they were a bit too greasy for my liking. The Hot and Sour Soup was enjoyed by all, thick, full of mushrooms and some veg and nice and spicy. If you don't like some heat go with the wonton soup. The Veggie lomein was full of crisp veg and the perfect amount of soy. The broccoli with garlic sauce was really enjoyed by a few but deemed too soggy by most. On the other hand the steamed shrimp with veggies was steamed to PERFECTION. The shrimp and broccoli dishes came with white rice. The overarching complaint was that there is not an option for brown rice. We called our order in, walked over to pick it up and it was packed and ready on time. This is a pickup restaurant so as far as ambience goes out is lacking any. But it is clean.

Yelp
Best Chinese in Louisville. It's been around for years for a reason. It's a little hole in the wall, straightforward counter service Chinese. Very small, only like 4 tables, so this is very much more for takeout. We didn't call ahead for our order, just ordered right there at the counter and our to go was ready in less than 10 minutes, and during Friday evening dinner rush when they were very busy. Woman behind the counter was so nice, made sure we had everything we needed, and you can see the cooks in the kitchen making your food. I usually get the chicken dishes. I got General Tso's this time. What I love: the chicken is fried to order so it's super crispy and the sauce is so flavorful. I feel like other places the sauce soaks into the breading and it gets a little soggy, but not here. Their crab rangoon is perfection. Other places is way too sweet with a few flecks of crab and is more like a cream cheese wonton. Theirs is generously filled with crab, and it's savory. I also love to get a side of lo mein, which had a great garlic flavor. You get so much food. I got a combination dinner that comes with pork fried rice (amazing) and an egg roll (crispy and also amazing). It's a nice deal. If you need Chinese takeout, this is where to go.

Yelp
This was our favorite "shitty" Chinese. It is not shitty at all. The pieces of pork in the fried rice take it to the next level. Service was quick even though the restaurant was super busy. We were able to talk to another patron that has been coming here for 40+ years. That kind of loyalty is amazing. I get it though. The egg roll was hot, crispy, and delicious. Even after a 15 minute drive home. We ordered general tsos and it was delicious as expected. I'm excited to return to taste the spicier dishes. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I've been eating here since the 90's! Really good and fast American Chinese. I especially love the Shanghai noodles
google avatar

Yelp
Best steamed dumplings around! I'm absolutely in love with their steamed dumplings, I would order solely for them. The majority of their menu is standard Chinese food, and it is all very good-- but the dumplings! They are what makes this one of my favorite places to get Chinese takeout! Takeout- they are mostly takeout. I have seen a table or two with chairs but it is very clear this is not for people to sit and eat, but rather for waiting. But trust me, once you get your dumplings you'll want to be alone so no one sees you rapidly devour them. To order you can call, order in person, or go online. I prefer the online option as they use menufy and you can use your venmo! Parking: it shares a parking lot with Kroger and other businesses, but directly in front of it is usually empty. The order time when I do only is usually 10-15 minutes and sometimes if I arrive early it's ready to go.

Yelp
I've lived in Germantown for 33 years. In all those years we have patronized Double Dragon on Goss. A lot. Tonight the husband called in an order. When he got home we had crab Rangoon .. which we didn't order nor have ever ordered. But we were charged for them. And my standard combination meal with a side of broccoli in oyster sauce. Pretty much the same order for many years.. but I was given steamed broccoli. I hate steamed broccoli. I've been married to this man for 35 years. We got this thing down pretty well. He would NEVER order me steamed broccoli. So I called. I just simply said u gave us Rangoon and steamed broccoli can I come up and exchange the broccoli for what I always get.. ok . I get dressed. I've been at work since 10:00 this morning .. but I drive over and the guy starts yelling at me. I hadn't said 5 words yet. HE TOLD ME STEAMED!! HE TOLD ME STEAMED!! Yelling at me. I said well he didn't. And he said $6.00. I said.. ur gonna make me pay for that broccoli that u messed up?? So I just turned and left. I'm so disappointed. We've been real supporters of theirs. So just beware. Check ur orders before u leave the store. We've had several orders in the last few years that have had things missing or incorrect. Never called them. Never said a word. Thank goodness there are some really good Chinese takeouts around us to try now.

Yelp
The BEST Chinese food in the city, hands down. Not another spot in town that can top this. This is my our favor place. My mom gets general tso chicken and I order beef and broccoli extra spicy. They have very affordable lunch specials and the service is quick. My spice level is on point for me, I always request extra spicy when I order my go to dish and it's always disappointing but not here, the chili oil is on point. The egg rolls have a crispy exterior and are made to order with perfect filling portions. Lots of food, I always have left overs. And my family loves that!
google avatar

Yelp
This is one of the best Chinese spots in Louisville, and my personal favorite. The employees are always so nice and the food always fast and delicious. I've had maybe 1 occasion where I wasn't completely satisfied, but I let the staff know and they corrected the issue for me. I almost always get the bourbon chicken combo (spicy, add garlic) with just steamed rice and it hits every time. I've tried the boneless spare ribs, as well as the war su gar and both are also very good. And the hot and sour soup! Many Chinese restaurants have this name, but this one is by far the best imo. Love you guys

Yelp
Writing a quick update about my recent order from Double Dragon, so I can remember to order it again. For our most recent takeout, I ordered the Dragon & Phoenix, which is made with chicken stir-fried with special sauce and jumbo shrimp with veggies. The chicken and shrimp were large in this dish, and I loved the sauce. If you're not sure if you want to go with chicken or shrimp in your dish, get this and get them both. We also ordered the crab rangoons again because they were so great the last time. These are stuffed full of crab goodness. The order came out fast and made it home hot. This is a solid place to order Chinese takeout from.
google avatar

Garrett B.

Yelp
I asked for broccoli. So they gave me one. Ugh, I wanted that to be my review but yelp says I must say more for it to count. If you want generic Chinese food this is it. And if you want a vegetable, they have one they'll give you.

Wendi W.

Yelp
I moved here a year ago and have not been able to find a regular Chinese restaurant since I've been here. Huge portions, take out is always steaming hot, vegetables are crunchy and fresh, best fried rice I've ever had. Great food, great price!

Yelp
Double Dragon is going above and beyond to keep us safe and happy during this pandemic. Examples: -Online and phone-ahead ordering, which limit the need to be out and about, or in the restaurant. -Limited number of customers physically in the building at any one time. -Two tables set up for order pick-up: phone orders on one side, internet on the other. When an order is ready, they label it clearly and place it on the appropriate table. Both tables can be seen from the outside, so there is no need to enter until your order is ready, then grab, yell "thank you!" and head home to enjoy. Speaking of enjoyment, OMG yes. We ordered broccoli with garlic sauce and bean curd Szechuan style, both of which were expertly seasoned, beautifully cooked, and exactly what we were hoping for from a take-out Chinese establishment. Double Dragon - thank you for keeping us safe, well fed, and sane.

Yelp
Seriously good food. We love the miso soup! The bibimbap is always good and the rolls can't be beat.

Lisa F.

Yelp
My spicy garlic veggie stir fry was steamed vegetable in brown water. Highly do not recommend. Asked for a refund, and dude was surprised, no apology, didn't offer to remake. Just don't go here. They need to go out of business.

Sarah H.

Yelp
It was good for quick food when wanting Chinese would have liked to of been a bit spicer as I thought I had ordered it but only had small heat you could barely tell that it was spicy.
google avatar

Yelp
It's just your average run-of-the-mill Chinese restaurant. I was a little shocked to see how many people were working in the kitchen and for it to be so open but they were working really hard and that made the experience better. I ordered takeout sesame chicken was very good in the crab Rangoon's. We're a little over stuffed with imitation crab meat, but still very good.

Yelp
Delicious food, plenty of choices!! Fast and kind service!! I ate in the restaurant but most took their orders to go! I'm not from here but I would definitely come again!!

Yelp
We love Double Dragon on Goss! Have been patronizing for 15+ years! They have installed glass protectors to protect employees and customers, or if you want more protection then you can order online (for a small convenience fee) and then do a contactless pickup. There is a table labeled online orders and your order will be waiting for you! We recently ordered the pork fried rice, general tao's chicken and pork egg rolls. Everything was very fresh and delicious as always. Our go to Chinese restaurant!
google avatar

Yelp
Probably the best General Tso 's Chicken I've had. Pretty spicy and lots of sauce and good flavor. My wife also really enjoyed the Broccoli Beef. We also got Crab Rangoons and Fried Dumplings, and they were both alright, but we've had better. The people working there were also very friendly and even gave us free almond cookies, which I thought was nice. Overall, I think this will be our go-to takeout place in Louisville from now on!

Yelp
Double Dragon is only accepting online orders from doubledragonky.com, there is a $1.50 convenience fee when ordering online. They have changed their hours: Monday and Tuesday: 11:00 AM - 9:00 PM Wednesday and Thursday: 1:00 PM - 9:00 PM Friday - Sunday: 11:00 AM - 9:00 PM We ordered Double Dragon Wednesday night. I usually get the Szechuan Chicken but I was unable to find that on the online ordering options. So I went with the Garlic Chicken and an order of Crab Rangoons. The Crab Rangoon lacks the creamy inside that I enjoy and is probably my least favorite option here in the city.. but it filled the void. Picking up your order there is no interaction with staff. They have tables set up on the right side of the restaurant with condiments and orders. There were probably 20+ bags on the table when I arrived. I wish the bags were sorted by last name to make it easier to find my order. The brown paper bag is stapled shut with an itemized receipt on the front. Our food was hot and good when we got home. Double Dragon isn't my first choice for take out but it did it's job. Thank you to the staff for their hard work pumping out orders during this time.
google avatar

Emily K.

Yelp
I wasn't too happy with my last visit here. The lady on the phone was rude and not helpful when I ordered. We got orange chicken and crab Rangoon. The orange chicken was actually pretty spicy. It was too much spice for me. The white rice was mushy and all clumped together. Their crab Rangoon was not good. It didn't have any cream cheese inside like most Chinese restaurants have. It was all fake crab with no actual flavor. If I remember correctly, the sesame chicken was fine, but I don't think I'll be back here.
google avatar

Jill W.

Yelp
Wonderful, delicious food. Such a massive variety and they have different kinds of Jell-O and some fabulous desserts. Great service well worth the visit will definitely come back.

Yelp
The owner is not friendly at all and hateful. it's hot inside, the aircon is not working.

Yelp
The food is always consistent and delicious! The service was fast and the staff was attentive.

Yelp
Satisfied customer for 27 years as of 2023. I travel the world and have never found a comparable General's Chicken...anywhere. Their noodle dishes are as good as the rice dishes. This is Americanized Chinese food at its best. This is not a real Chinese place with dim sum, hand thrown noodles, etc. But the employees are Chinese. There is a language barrier...but it is easily overcome with a smile and common human courtesy. The employees treat me very well and we joke around at times, but the place is no-nonsense. Dining tables are removed and limited due to to city codes about toilets...this place has none. Despite rampant inflation, this place remains the cheapest lunch in town, and I am so glad and grateful for that. Forget the bathrooms, tables, and all the rest...This place is about the food and they nail it for over 20 different dishes of various descriptions. Try it!
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite Chinese Restaurant in Louisville hands down been there a bunch of times during my stay in this lovely city... Every single meal has been spot on delicious. Wonton soup it's amazing specially with this chill rainy weather, crab Rangoons are the best ever! The house lo mein yuummm, Fried rice to die for ok you know I'm getting hungry now I'll probably go there as soon as my lunch time hits... yeah you gotta try it! It's that good. Let the good times roll!

Lucca P.

Yelp
This isnt even Chinese they have Phad Thai noodles which is Thai food not Chinese tasted like In-N-Out fries, Cardboard trash.
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
You just can't seem to go wrong with Double Dragon. No matter the location! Beef and Broccoli combo. No onion. Add mushroom. Big, juicy mushrooms! Not like the dried up ones you see on almost any pizza. I had crab Rangoon as well and my only complaint is that I wish they folded them into the flower/star shape rather than a triangle. The former just seems to hit better with the CRUNCH!! They're always pleasant and super fast with your order.
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
Solid choice for American-Chinese food in the Germantown neighborhood. While visiting family the other week in Louisville, I was sad to learn my favorite childhood Chinese takeout restaurant has closed. However, I was recommended Double Dragon by a friend, and I'm so glad I gave them a shot. I called ahead and placed my order over the phone for pickup. You could tell even over the phone they were busy! And when I arrived, that was confirmed with the line out the door, and the kitchen crew hastily working behind the counter. Although there was a small wait to approach, that was a good sign to me. People really love this place! They're taking proper COVID precautions with a pickup table and having people wait outside. I ordered the sesame chicken (spicy) combo plate and an order of dumplings. Everything was delicious! The sesame chicken was battered, lightly fried, and tender. Covered in a slightly spicy sesame sauce, served with a side of bbq pork fried rice and an egg roll. It the perfect size for one person too. I only wish I would have ordered extra spicy! The pot stickers were delicious as well, with lots of filling. I will be returning.
google avatar

Elisabeth E.

Yelp
Always wonderful and consistent! They're quick, reliable, and always providing quality food.
google avatar

Madison K.

Yelp
A Veggie Eggroll and Mixed Vegetable Chow Mei Fun, both delicious! The chow mei fun was pretty spicy, so expect a bit of a kick. Always a good move to order from there.
google avatar

Tony W.

Yelp
The food was what you expect for fast takeout Chinese type food. The beef and broccoli was MOSTLY broccoli. The beef was questionable as to its origin, didn't seem like a very high quality beef, tasted more like parts that we don't typically eat on an animal, the consistency was very funky on the beef And for $15 an entrée it's not a good deal. the crab Rangoon needs some onion. the people there work very fast and very hard but the quality of food at least on the beef and broccoli is not what I would recommend.

Ross P.

Yelp
This place has been here forever. When you need a Chinese take-out fix, it's the place to go. Notably, the dumplings/pot-stickers are addictive. An order consists of 8 dumplings and a great complimentary dipping sauce. It's a meal. There's nothing more Pavlovian than placing your order over the phone and hearing the Double Dragon guy say "OK, 10 minute." Other favorites are the Chinese Sparerib Combo, the Orange Beef, and the Black Bean Chicken. Combos come with fried rice and a really great fried egg roll. The staff is never changing - they're like a Chinese take-out machine. And every order is consistent - one order to the next.

Cheri S.

Yelp
Best crab Rangoon in Louisville bar none. Best combination meals and healthy portions for price. Everything made fresh right in front of you. Call in, online order or carry out / dine in. Family owned and operated.

Ashly S.

Yelp
I called for a delivery and the man was extremely rude on the phone and hung up on me. When I called back he took my order and said no over the phone cards and hung up again. My coworkers say the food is good but nothing is worth that kind of service. After we got our food they didn't get my order right...instead of chicken chow mein, they give my cabbage, onions, and chicken sauce.
google avatar

Kendal W.

Yelp
This place is nice and has very reasonable prices. The only complaint about this establishment is that the inside isn't like most Chinese restaurants. No decor. A little dirty. Basically not somewhere i would enjoy to sit and eat with my friends. Take out only but the food was good lol.
google avatar

Dana L.

Yelp
I used to live down the street from here and really miss this place. I have a hard time finding good Mongolian Beef that's consistent and portioned well on the other side of the river. I stopped by after work this week and ordered the Mongolian Beef, a War Su Gar combination, and an order of Crab Rangoon. The Crab Rangoon has a wonderful flavor and is packed full of crab and scallions. The Mongolian Beef's flavor is spot on and not diluted and bland (as so many are) and it is loaded with onions (regular and scallions) without being skimpy on the beef. The War Su Gar was fried right, crispy, and hot. The gravy came on the side and it had a good flavor. They threw in some of their cucumbers, which I always loved. The place is clean and the staff was as nice and efficient as the always were. Great place to pick up some take out Chinese.
google avatar

Jeremy J.

Yelp
I enjoy dragons and I definitely enjoy doubling my dragons. This makes me think of the Nintendo game back in the day Double Dragons. However that game was much better than this food. Now all that being said this is just like every other Chinese joint get you some General Tso's chicken with a little bit of rice and it's good to go but it is a 3 out of 5 for me because it isn't quite up to my favorite place Max Orient which is a 5 but Double Dragon Chinese food is decent. It is nothing that I would go out of my way to get but I would give it another shot if I had too. I did not like the rice that came with it. The rice had onions in it and I do not like onions. So unfortunately I will give this place 3 out of 5 total stars.

Yelp
Double Dragon was a staple of my take-out repertoire for almost a decade when I lived only blocks away from it in Germantown. I recently saw a co-worker eating what I knew must be Double D and it reminded me of my former love. So, I made special plans to pick up one of their lunch specials (available weekdays 11-3) to become reacquainted. They have a fairly large menu of Chinese-American standards from sweet and sour pork to Garlic Broccoli (an old favorite of mine). I opted for the Szechuan shrimp lunch special for $5.50 which comes with veggie fried rice and an egg roll (you can usually sub pork for shrimp egg roll with an up charge). I called my order in and it was ready to go just 10 min later. The aroma in the car ride to work was tempting, so imagine my dismay when I opened the box to find just a few small shrimp in a sea of green pepper and bamboo shoots. I'm a veggies lover, but if I wanted this ratio I would have ordered differently. Gone are the healthy portions of protein, or at least in this case. The food was good and I still got my fill for the modest price. But, I decided that next time, I'm sticking to one of the veggie lunch specials. I also used to love the cold sesame noodles, so I'll give those a try again as well. I think I'll be much happier with the outcome.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
When I'm 10 spreadsheets deep, whom shall I call for that sweet and sour chicken fix? Double Dragon. It's a well-oiled machine, pun intended. Quick, affordable, consistent, and gets the job done. That's more than I can say for P.F. Chang's, the Chinese restaurant equivalent of a bland hotel room you overpaid for.

Brian K.

Yelp
I ran kitchens for 42 years ordered lots of Chinese all over the country this is the best Chinese food I've had in 30 years and I know what I'm talking about I would highly recommend these people
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
I've tried this place a couple Of times due to convenience- it's so close to my house. The food is awful and they are more than rude: pork fried rice is fatty and when I mentioned it the response was pretty much: you must have the wrong place. The Lo Mien tasted like a dirty wok and even when I paid- no appreciation. I'll go To China One down the road
google avatar

Solange M.

Yelp
I really like this place for carry out. They're always nice and friendly, I've seen the main guy here looking super stressed (especially on Christmas) because they can get busy. I've never felt like they've been brusque or rude to me. Anyway, it's definitely just typical takeout Chinese. I like coming here because the food is consistent. Their hot and sour soup can be greasy but it's always piping hot and full of mushrooms, bamboo, and pork. They'll even make it extra spicy if you ask! I also love their steamed pork dumplings. They have consistent and tasty combo dinners too, again they can be greasy but you're also usually getting fried rice and fried candied meat so like, of course it's gonna be greasy. ALSO don't sleep on the SHRIMP eggroll. Ohhhh you dunk that buddy into some duck sauce from the packet and it's heaven oh man.... Anyway, solid takeout choice for Germantown and it's been here forever.

Yelp
Killer Chinese food in strip mall next to Kroger ...what!!! Hidden gem fo Shure! Don't tell anyone
google avatar

Brad G.

Yelp
This place is ok. It's definitely cheap enough. I've tried them quite a few times in hopes that it'll be better. My gf loves this place. Some of my co-workers also love this place. I just don't get why? I've had a variety of things from here. It's not that it's bad, because everything I've had is edible, but things don't have a lot of flavor. The extra miscellaneous thing to add is later on in the night after I've had Double Dragon. It's a gateway to some of the nastiest farts I've ever experienced. I equate it to a lingering dirty dishwater/sewage smell. I hate to say that because the staff is extremely nice, but it never fails. Every time I eat there... that smell presents itself in my farts. So, if you need something in a hurry... go here. If you need something to weaponize yourself in a fart battle... go here. If you want something cheap... go here. If you want something with a little more quality and a little more flavor, definitely make the trip somewhere else and spend a few more dollars.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a carry out facility, though there are 2 tables and a few waiting chairs. For lunch I ordered the sweet and sour chicken L1 ($5.50). I received a good portion of chicken and cup of sauce, rice and an egg roll. Service was fast, food was good and value priced. It was what I expected and wanted.

Yelp
The Double Dragon is a Chinese restaurant in the Germantown Square shopping plaza. The restaurant is pretty typical for most Chinese take out places. A counter with a menu prominently displayed over the ordering area with a view of the kitchen. There are a few tables along one side of the restaurant, but it's really not a place for dining in. Interestingly, there is also a Double Dragon II in the Louisville area, but these restaurants are not affiliated. The menu offers your standard Chinese fare, including Garlic Chicken, Sweet and Sour Pork, and General Tso's chicken. Your order is generally prepared in 10 minutes or less and the food is tasty and definitely fulfills my craving for General Tso's chicken. It's not overly cooked and usually has a little heat to it, which I enjoy. They also have a reasonable lunch special on weekdays, which provides a more than ample meal along with an egg roll for $5.25 to $5.50. I've never had a bad experience with any meal at the Double Dragon, but it's also not write home to your Mom good either. Their food will more than adequately fulfill any craving for Chinese food, and it's an excellent alternative to the usual fast food for lunch.
