Falling Down Beer Company Abruptly Closes Both of Its Taprooms | Eater Detroit

"Ferndale’s beloved greasy spoon on Nine Mile closed on June 17; the spot was a neighborhood favorite for big breakfasts and affordable diner coffee, and owners Valter and Elda Xhomaqi said the property owner declined to renew their lease while they try to find employment for their staff at their Whistle Stop restaurants." - Brenna Houck

Ferndale’s Double EE Restaurant Will Reopen as Earl’s Diner | Eater Detroit

"A long-running east-side greasy spoon that was a popular neighborhood diner unexpectedly closed on Father’s Day after the building owner refused to renew the restaurant’s lease, ending operations amid a landlord-tenant dispute. The business had been run by Valter and Elda Xhomaqi since 2002 (they later operated two Whistle Stop locations), and the sudden shutdown left regular customers and staff saddened." - Brenna Houck

We waited a while to try this joint, until it was convenient for us. Our Saturday lunch stop was perfect! The island burger I had was great and he loved the fried chili dog. I ordered (what turned out to be the last) strawberry rhubarb fried pie ala mode, and it was certainly big enough to share! I like the fact that they don’t seem to have a frozen stockpile of them sitting in a freezer in the back. The only not positive thing that I can say is that the sensor-driven porch light kept kicking on and off in the rain/grayness of the day, and it was a little annoying; however, I’m guessing that it was contingent upon the weather. I loved the melodious voice of the waitress, the “haint blue” porch ceiling, and obligatory greeter cat on the porch. It felt very southern, like I was in the low country or something.

Google
Found this little gem out on a drive with my teenage son. He said it was the best sandwich he's had in a long time. He had the chicken bacon ranch Philly with fried pickles and I had the patty melt & tots! Great local spot, cute little cats hanging around outside was a nice perk too!

Google
My partner and I tried this place today for the first time. We really enjoyed the classic ambiance of the place, the food was good, the lady working the counter was very nice.

Google
This is one of those unexpected gems. It is small but great home cooked food and terrific fried pies. It is a cool atmosphere as well. I highly recommend it!

Google
Awesome local mom n pop Restraunt. Great vibe and food. If you're traveling through the area, a definite stop for food and dessert treats. The Fried Pies are delicious 😋

Google
Peak food experience. Feels like a family gathering with the food that's served there. The burgers are always well priced, and their fries are the best in the state.

Google
Cute little family owned diner in the heart of Highlandville. Very friendly, lots of local history on the walls. We had the "Hotter"chicken sandwich, French dip and split a house salad because it was so big!! And Tigg, one of the local cats, will probably greet you on the front porch. He is so sweet. 😺😺

Google
Very friendly service and delicious food! Reminded me of all those little mom and pop cafes I waited tables at when growing up in a small town!! Like a walk down memory lane! Will definitely go back and try other things on the menu!! Can’t go wrong stopping in for a bite to eat. Something on the menu for everyone!!

Yelp
Delicious burger, Baby Redneck, fried okra, and fried pie! Love the small town country atmosphere. We stayed for over an hour for lunch while the store was 1/4 full- not a quick in and out restaurant but a great come and stay for real food place. Such a fun find off the main roads

Yelp
One of the best burgers around can't be in a hurry ma and pa shop little understaffed worth the wait

Yelp
This is a great mom and Pop restaurant. The breakfast is outstanding. Great bacon. Best biscuits and gravy. The burgers are very tasty ! Real catfish, had their special on a Friday. Well worth it The fried pies are huge ! This is definitely a place to stop and eat. Take your time and enjoy. Also, you'll be helping out a small business trying to earn a living.

Yelp
Delicious food and friendly service. A hidden gem. Would definitely recommend. Everything we ordered was incredible.

Yelp
Well, this joint is kind of out-of-the-way, it is worth the drive. In addition to high quality burgers, they also offer a full menu. Their ice cream and fried pie are to die for. We will drive 20 minutes out of the way to go by here for the treat. if you're in a big hurry and wanting fast food, this is not your joint, but if you appreciate quality and made to order goodness, you will appreciate this Qwaint joint off the beaten path. They're just a block or so off of Highway 13 south between Nixa and Rv Spring. kind of a fun place!

Matthew T.

Yelp
Quaint little place with limited number of tables. Nice menu choices for a small restaurant. No alcohol. I had the catfish, which was cooked perfectly, and three portion sizes fits every appetite. Wife had a wrap, which was also a nice sized portion and very good. No loud music, so you can actually have conversations. Service was quick and attentive. Seems like mostly a place for the locals, but worth a short drive from surrounding towns.

Yelp
This is a great place with great burgers and great ice cream, everything is great im just working my way through

Yelp
Great little place to eat!!!! I had the pork tenderloin sandwich. It was fresh made there and not some frozen patty.

Yelp
You walk up to a porch like a scene from the Walton's. The atmosphere is that of a great mom and pop shop. A couple of specials written in the board. You pick a table that is open and are greeted with a smile and a menu. The menu has a great selection of burgers sandwiches and sides. I went with a basic cheeseburger but had pepper jack cheese instead of American. The burger had lettuce, tomato and onion some simple seasonings and was cooked to perfection. The large side of fried okra didn't disappoint either. My son and I shared it and it was more than enough. Didn't get to try all of there fried pie choices. That will be for the many next times to come.

Yelp
Love this place. The burgers are awesome. Fresh meat not frozen. I highly recommend the bacon cheese burger. Definitely come hungry because you're going to want the fried pie for dessert.

Yelp
Great home style cooking in the hamlet of Highlandville! Family owned business that has very friendly, fast service. The food is very good in a town that if you blink you'll miss it..! This place is a hidden gem. If you are in the area, stop by for the friendly service, good home cooked food, fried pies.. the burgers are great! I had a Patty Melt, the burgers are 1/2 lb of hamburger and delicious. The onion rings are awesome! I highly recommend them:) Try this place out, I don't think you'll be disappointed..

Yelp
Stopped in with the lady for an nice comfort food dinner and boy did we find it. First off the place is in an interesting old building with lots of charm. The walls are full of decorations with lots of personality. We liked it. Get seated and dig into the menu. The lady goes for the Double E burger with cheese and onions rings. I go for the Barnyard Burger with a side salad. Both were made to order and came out in about 10-12 minutes. My barnyard was a huge juicy burger with fresh bacon, and two eggs on top. Big flavor that you never want to tell you doctor about. The side salad was basic but fresh with croutons, cucumbers, lettuce, and blue cheese dressing. Nice light and simple. Just enough to make me feel better about destroying that burger. The lady really enjoyed hers as well. She said the rings were very good too. We finished the meal off by splitting a fried pie. Let me tell you these things take about 10 to make and are huge! Think funnel cake with fresh berry Jam filling. We had to take most of it home in a box. The Good Big juicy burgers Good rings Friendly Staff Charming location One of the best fried pies I've had to date. The Bad This place will hurt your waste line but worth it. The Ugly Nada we are now fans. We'll be back after hitting the gym!

Yelp
Stopped at this establishment while headed back to St. Louis from Shell Knob. I got the special of the day, the Aloha Chicken & it was wonderfully flavorful! For desert we had Fried Apple Pie and Ice Cream which we couldn't finish between the two of us. I'd come to this place again while visiting the lake, it was wonderful.

Yelp
Diamond in the rough! We went because of a family recommendation to have a burger. Their burgers were made to perfection; so good my wife who usually has left overs ate the 1/2 burger and loved every bite! Even though we were full, we decided to try a fried pie. Oh my goodness!!!! Amazing! They make the dough daily and make these pies to order. Be patient because it takes a little while, but the dough on these pies was a treat in itself. My only concern about sharing this and rating them so well... it'll no longer be a secret. Yeah, it's that good!
google avatar

Amanda T.

Yelp
Our food was great, and the portion sizes were large. We had the fried catfish special and it was cooked well. We'll definitely be back to try some other items. The service was amazing. That alone would bring us back.
google avatar

Yelp
One star off for lettuce on a side salad that wasn't so fresh. Awesome burger, fries, and beer-battered rings. The rings were well-done so as to not leave you with an onion string dangling on your chin. I'm taking home fried pies. Yup, fried pies.
google avatar

Yelp
Great hometown food! Food is always a plentiful portion. Don't forget to try their shakes and pies!

Yelp
Small town, good cookin!! We have missed good down home cookin living out on the east coast. This place sure hit the spot. A little our of the way but so worth it. Cute little country place. I had the chicken bacon ranch philly and the hubby had a mushroom and Swiss burger. Both were delicious. I couldn't have been happier.

Clara S.

Yelp
Wow!!! As soon as I pulled up, I said, "This place is going to have the worlds best burgers. I can tell." And I was RIGHT!!! Delicious food, great prices, warm and such friendly staff and clean bathrooms!!! But seriously, they made us feel right at home. I live 2 hours away and I'd make the drive to come back!

Kristen T.

Yelp
The place is amazing. So cheap and good. I do not like pie nor turnovers. I mean occasionally I'll have a chocolate pie but never a fruit one. Omg the strawberry fried pie was so good, it was insane. I was already too full by their generous servings but I was like you know what; I'll give it a shot. I ate the entire HUGE piece standing in my kitchen. It was that good. It was easily half the side of the Togo container. Yum yum yum yum yum My stomach hurts because I physically couldn't stop eating it

Yelp
Double E Burger was the cutest little diner. The woman running the restaurant was very nice & attentive. I had the chicken fried steak sandwich with friend okra & it was delicious. The best part was the peach fried pie for dessert! Highly recommend this place if you're looking for yummy comfort food.

Yelp
By far the best homemade food ever!! You won't leave hungry that's for sure!! You will want to take time to stop by here and don't forget to try their fried pies!! Amazing all around!!

Yelp
This place is to die for. The owners and the food are both amazing.. I will for sure put this as a place I will be coming back too.

Yelp
This is, hands down, the best restaurant anywhere near Springfield. A small, genuine family restaurant that serves food the old-fashioned way. It's quiet and peaceful, excellent for a night with family or friends. When the food comes, you will be positivley blown away. Massive, flavorful burgers; Amazingly delicious sides, and not a corporate practice in sight. Everything is local, personal, and completely transparently genuine. I never leave without marveling at the sheer quality, dedication, and heart this place is oozing with. Stop by, make some chat with the friendly owner, and enjoy the best meal of your life!

Yelp
This place is nuts! Not since I lived in Montana have I ever walked into a restaurant and felt "History" I know that sounds odd but it's true. This place is its own perfect time capsule in every mouth watering bite. It's as if your great grandmother had been resurrected from the grave and shoved in front of a stove and forced to make you the meals of your youth. Sure she's a zombie but the brain is a muscle and there for muscle memory comes into play and after a few seconds the hands start swinging around and in a few fleeting moments your right back to your youth and everything is perfect. However, there's the catch. You didn't have a great grandmother. A matter of fact...you never even met your real grandparents from either side of your family. Panic sinks in! You start to question reality, life, and your existence on this planet as a whole! Your losing grip as you continue to chew! Your mind starts to scream... "IF THESE ARENT MY MEMORIES THEN WHOS ARE THEY!!!???" You look around the room for signs of hope and relief from this mental anguish. Then you get it. This food is packed with love and memories of generations. You seriously feel and taste it all. This isn't some formula hatched in a lab. This isn't some pink slime pumped forth from the bowels of a machine. This is real down home food that makes you feel like your sitting at the dinner table with all their ancestors. It's beyond words. I hope and pray the local community keeps this place going! I really do. Because here, you really do feel like family!

Yelp
Went for lunch and had the patty melt and it was amazing. I always judge burger joints by the patty melt because if you don't know the proper way to grill an onion then it's not worth coming back . This melt had it all the rigjt bread , toasted right, thousand island dressing and not greasy. A huge pile of fries that were wonderfully crisp and season. The waitress was great fun and good server. Only lost a star because I couldn't use the bathroom because the toilet was to short for a disabled person. Will go back again also the fried pies were the best I've tasted
google avatar

Summer F.

Yelp
Very friendly staff, great service, and fresh crisp vegetables on a handmade patty!!!! Couldn't ask for a better burger joint!

Yelp
A little out of the way but the service was great and the food was incredible. The three of us ordered the covered Tater tots as an appetizer and they were good. A little soggy from the chili but good flavor. They were normal size but good for the three of us. We all ordered different burgers and I did the patty melt. The burger was "HUUUUGGE" was very tasty and not overcooked as so many places are. The other burgers looked awesome as well. We then ordered the Strawberry Rhubarb Fried Pie!!!!! OMG, once again HUUUUGGGE! We did it alamode and split between 3 people. I am a normally big eater and so is the rest of the family but we got plenty of food. Total for all of us was just over $31. The decor is Country Farm and very basic, I know many have complained about this but it is not a 4 or 5 star place, it is a diner and great prices and great service. If you want something else, there are plenty places in Springfield or Branson to meet your needs! Get off the beaten path and enjoy some great grub!

Yelp
We had a blast!!! Buffalo chicken sandwich was awesome!!! The kiddos loved their grilled cheese!! Great service and friendly atmosphere!!! Can't wait to come back for desert!!!

Yelp
Two thumbs W A Y U P !!! We have heard folks talking about Double E and their fried pies, but we had no idea what delights awaited us. We were starved when we got there, so we started with the fried pickles (hand-breaded thick pickle slices). Rog got the chef salad (enormous and delicious) Jude got the kids chicken tenders (crispy and juicy), and I opted for something simple--the fried chili dog (served-open faced with all the fixins). But we were there for the pie. When our fried cherry pie came out it covered a dinner plate. The crust was tender and flaky, and the filling was sweet and tart like a cherry pie filling should be. And to top it off, the wait staff is wonderful-friendly and very attentive. We will be back, not real soon because it will take a week or two to stop feeling so full. Great place--great food. Get your buns to the Double E!

Yelp
Got this off Groupon. Is this place even legit ? 5pm no one was in there besides us. Lady was nice but no personality . There was a finger nail on our table... yuck. Burgers were OK , not terrible, not good enough to come back. Just wasn't feeling it... very hick.
google avatar

Patsy L.

Yelp
It was worth the drive from Branson to try Double E's. I ordered the BLT and was shocked when it came with, not four or five slices of bacon, but ten. And it had a large slice of tomato and lettuce. It was wonderful. My husband had the fish and shrimp basket and loved every bite. We ordered fried pies to go. Don't let the looks of the place deter you from trying this place
google avatar

Katie W.

Yelp
This is a very nice, friendly and clean place. They offer sandwiches, hamburgers, fried pie and ice cream. I ordered the Double E 1/2 lb hamburger and it is good, but missing seasoning for my taste. Everything at our table was on the bland side, but very fresh. I certainly would go back again.
google avatar

Yelp
Off the beaten path .... head home from Branson and this place came up on yelp ... didn't disappoint! Good food ,good service . Small town atmosphere, enjoyed our visit !

Yelp
The double EE restaurant is a great little family dining experience. They are very friendly and have great food. They are known for their fried pies which are delicious. My wife and I eat there often.

Dawn H.

Yelp
I usually love small family owned mom and pop restaurants, so when I heard about this place, I was excited to try it. Unfortunately, this is not your typical local family establishment. Upon walking in, there was only one waitress working and she glanced over in our direction, looked right at us and then looked away not once, but TWICE. She then walked to check on another party at a table and ignored our presence completely... Not the "hello" or I'll be with you in just a moment" that I'm used to receiving at places like this- no smile, not even a wave. We found a table and seated ourselves and she finally brought menus- again, never welcoming us, never asked how we were doing..she avoided eye contact. She was very awkward and there was absolutely nothing warm or inviting about this person. She was uncomfortable to be around in general with her very condescending and "above" everyone attitude. Food was just OK. Nothing special. Bathrooms were filthy. The chair seats were peeling all over the floor, one if the cooks had very dirty hands. Just gross all around. None of us finished our food after seeing how filthy this place was kept. The cook also walked past us several times and never made eye contact, never a hello. I'm sorry but how do you run a business, especially is a small community when you can't even make an effort to be friendly to your customers? And obviously, the waitress "Carrie" needs some serious training in customer service. Or she could use another job, out if the public eye. But I get it now, as I found out that she is the owners wife! Now that really does say it all. I'll NEVER, ever go back to this dump and I'll make sure to tell everyone I encounter to avoid this place at all costs!!!

Yelp
I was so very pleasantly surprised at how amazing the food was! The decor is simple but comfortable. The service was a little... angry? at first but overall we were very pleased and will be back. Hubs had a hickory burger which he said was great, and I had a club sandwich which was fantastic. The chili cheese fries were TO DIE FOR. If you're in the area or looking for a short day trip give this little cafe a try- you won't regret it!

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic place to eat! Great people and great service! The guys from the shop and I eat here at least twice a week. Only bad thing is working right around the corner from them and thinking about them fried pies. the mph family

Jodi L.

Yelp
This is a little treasure of a restaurant tucked away in Highlandville. Our hostess/ server was friendly, thorough and attentive to needs. The service was prompt. Sandwiches, fries and ice cream were all delicious and reasonably priced. If we get delayed for a game again, we know where we are going!

Derl H.

Yelp
My in laws took my youngest and myself here for lunch. The waitress was hilarious and really good at her job. The menu is standard burger joint/cafe fare but executed really well. We had burgers and it was a good burger, if I have any complaints it was the size. The standard burger is half a pound and that's a bit much for me. My father-in-law had a burger with teriyaki sauce and pineapple. Strange but he really likes it. The fried pie was awesome, I had blueberry and while there was apple on the table I didn't try. I would recommend this place.

T S.

Yelp
This place is amazing! My husband and I loved going here on date nights when we lived in Missouri. We miss is so much. This is now my parents favorite place to go.
