I'm very lucky to have such a nice and affordable diner right in my neighborhood. It's an inexpensive, no frills diner. The portions are big and the service is fast. The only thing I would change about the place is taking Fox News off of their TV!

Brian Marabanian

Google
The eggs were poached perfectly on the Beverly hillbilly w/chix and a wonderful sausage gravy. My strawberry pancakes didn't need any syrup, but I added a little anyway. It was as always a good experience.

I come here for breakfast all the time, like once a week. Service is fast and plates are huge. All the waitresses are friendly and are usually chatting it up with regulars. This place has lots of regulars. Awesome diner, always a good experience. Daily specials are awesome too, try the mac n cheese omelette!

Been going here since I was a kid and boy has this place gone down hill. Ordered carryout I was hung up on before I could complete my order. When I arrived I wasn't greeted, the two waitresses were talking among themselves for a few minutes. My actual order was half of what it should have been and was soaked in grease. These people clearly don't care or take pride in their work any longer. It's a shame it used to be a great place to eat.

Google
Great greasy spoon. Large portions for cheap, and decent food, especially for breakfast. (Huge ham steaks). Quarters are kind of cramped, but I can always find a seat. Staff is quick and keeps your coffee mug full.

Google
Great breakfast/lunch stop. Diner atmosphere . The staff is warm and welcoming. If you make this a regular thing, it's is the dining equivalent of Cheers. BTW, the portions are very generous.

Amazing country fried steak, large portions, cozy and warm inside. Super fast service and plenty of open tables Saturday AM. New fav breakfast spot if you want the classic!

First off I want to say that I've been to this place about 50 times in the past 5 years because it's close to work. Almost every experience has been excellent. Now to this review. The restaurant is split into 2 server sections, 1 section is packed, the other section (counter side) is almost dead. The waitress in the dead section is standing at the counter where her daughter is seated talking to her for 6 minutes straight (I was timing her after a couple minutes of seeing her standing there) Not helping anyone, just talking to her family member. While this is happening server 2 is running her butt off. Family member leaves and the server goes to take an order from the table opposite of ours. I kindly ask her for coffee, to which she replies "I'm not your waitress" Fine, I can deal with that... Our server finally gets a minute to take our order which is by this point 10 minutes after we sat down. She comes back with our coffee and tells us one is half decaf. (the coffee pot is 2 feet from the server that didn't do anything or help a customer during that time) We send it back, had to wait for the pot to brew, fine, things happen. Breakfast arrives, toast is dry, no butter, waitress is still swamped so I'm not going to bother bugging her because I usually don't eat it anyway. I go to pay the bill, our server asks how everything was, I complained about the time it took because of the waitress talking to her daughter, complained about being told after 10 minutes that it wasn't her job to get me a cup of coffee, also complained about getting decaf coffee because again, server talking to family and not doing her job, also complained about the toast. The server said very rudely that I wasn't her section, to which I replied "I don't want to hear it" And then she has the nerve to tell me "I don't want to hear it either". I pay my bill and leave. I'm there with another guy from work whom then goes to pay his bill. That same waitress says to him "sit down, what the hell is wrong with your friend?" Our waitress says to her "Well you didn't make any coffee and everyone was waiting" to which rude server made a snotty reply to her. I feel bad because I did complain to our server which was doing her best and then stiffed her on the tip. I later thought about the entire situation and realized it was server 1 and the cooks fault that there was no service, no coffee, and no butter on the toast. In all fairness I will again say that I've never had bad service or food there until this time. but to be so damn lazy, then cop an attitude, then be rude when the customer has legitimate complaints, then on top of it all to pull another guy aside that had zero to do with the entire situation is unforgivable. Review... normally 5 stars, good food, service and prices. This day minus 5 stars. She should be fired. If the waitress that was caught in the middle of this reads this review... I'm sorry I complained to you, I'm sorry I stiffed you on the tip for something that really wasn't your fault and most of all... I'm sorry you have to work with that rude lady. Duane Sobczak.

Yelp
Stopped here on a whim, not sure what to expect. The servers were friendly and efficient. I had two eggs over light with rye toast. It was cooked to perfection. My husband had the eggs Benedict with hash browns. He ate every bite! The coffee was fresh and plentiful. This place is the kind of local gem you hope to find while traveling. Good food, good service, reasonable prices.

Jeff P.

Yelp
awesome food! Great sandwiches I love the corned beef sandwich. Breakfast omelets are great too.

Julie L.

Yelp
do not eat here. the owner attempted to give me a take out order that had already been givin and dug through by a customer. i said no.. i just watched you and someone else dig through it. literally chased me into the parking lot saying it was my food and i coukd have it for free. never again. thus place is an absolute dump. just go to country boy!!! not not eat here!!

Kaela K.

Yelp
Your classic diner experience. The waitresses are incredibly friendly and quick. The food is tasty and well priced. The coffee and water refills are fast.

Kathleen M.

Yelp
I had the chicken stir fry - wasn't expecting it to be all that good, but was pleasantly surprised. Our waitress took great care of us.

Gary C.

Yelp
Always good. Used to be called Double EE but anyways. Food always good. I know all the waitresses so they give me a hard time, but in a good way. Fresh applewood bacon, sandwiches are huge. Eggs are always on point. Coffee always hot and they make sure your cup is filled. Can't complain about food or service. Parking lot needs help. They have layered over it at least ten times and it's a giant mountain to climb up driveway, pot holes are abundant and it really needs to be stripped back down to the base and redone properly. But hey, what do I know. I get it it's costly, but the potholes are crazy big. Reinvest in your business !!!

Nicole E.

Yelp
I had been here a couple of times before when it was double EEs, it was okay then. Menu doesn't seem to have changed much, a few add-ons at most. Interior hasn't changed much either. I got the usual turkey Rueben that I get at any diner spot. My husband ordered his farmer's market omelet. My Rueben tasted decent. My husband said his omelet was okay as well. Service was quick at least. We were in and out in less than 45 minutes.

Jerry M.

Yelp
The food is always good and the service is always fast,I go there every Thursday for lunch.try the omelettes there great.

Penny I.

Yelp
Very good home food. Reasonably priced. Wonderful portions. I got dinner and lunch from my turkey dinner. Grandson liked his spaghetti dinner and he's hard to please. It was warm and cozy on a freezing night.

Lindsey P.

Yelp
This is the best little diner I ever did stumble across. The staff is friendly and the food gets cooked very fast. I've tried a few different breakfast items and I've been nothing but satisfied. I've tried their eggs Benedict and also an omelette with egg whites. Whenever I don't feel like cooking breakfast this is my place!

Christopher A.

Yelp
The food here is good. I like supporting small local businesses. This is the typical American comfort style food establishment. The reason for my low rating is the waitress. This past Friday was my 3rd visit where all 3x she was my waitress. She came to the table put down water and silverware and never introduced herself. I saw her do the same thing with the other patrons. When it came time to take my order I placed my salad order and she picked up the menu and walked away. I wanted to order soup but she left in the middle Of my salad ordering. I still let her a 30%tip as I know times are tough right now. When I gave it to her she never even said thanks or acknowledged it. I won't go back due to the poor service.

Danielle S.

Yelp
I love coming to this place! The wait staff is dependable and you can expect to see the same nice ladies every time you come. I don't experiment too much with the menu because I usually just order chili cheese fries as a meal from here for $3.99. For this visit though, with the intention of writing this, my husband and I mixed it up! I was a fan of everything we got.

Krystal T.

Yelp
I ordered for delivery with GrubHub. I added "no cheese!!!" to my order because I am allergic to dairy. My order came with cheese in it. I called Earl's Diner and could hear the owner telling the waitress that I was wrong and there was no cheese in my omelette (please see the photo of the cheese oozing out of said omelette). The owner then got on the phone and told me to "figure it out" myself then hung up on me. I called back and he refused to take the call. This is the OWNER of the restaurant who decided that treating a customer this way was okay. It's annoying enough to now have to take medication and spend days congested due to his lack (he's also the cook apparently) of regard but to also be treated with such disrespect is uncalled for. Don't eat here. Don't support tyranny.

Aron B.

Yelp
Well, that rating's tagline absolutely hits it on the nose. I went there specifically because my parents have told me they go there, and other breakfast places local to me weren't open until 8AM on Saturday, so here's where I ended up. Breakfast was much less than impressive...it was pretty much lousy. Nothing ended up being really right and/or good, and I left food on the plate, which nearly never happens when I'm as good and hungry as I was. The eggs I'd asked for "over hard as a hockey puck" were darned near runny in the middle...I honestly don't think that he broke the yoke when cooking them. The hash browns were extremely disappointing and tasted of an odd chemical or something...much of them went uneaten, and I so rarely get to treat myself to hash browns. The bacon was not crispy, it was of poor quality, and again: I didn't eat all of it. I repeat: I left *bacon* on the plate. Unheard of. The dry, wheat toast I asked for (*TWICE* I made sure to note that I wanted it dry...) came, you guessed it, buttered. They had to remake that, which normally isn't that big of a deal, because you're eating everything else, and toast comes out quickly. When everything else is disappointing, though... Server was fine, I guess, but I was annoyed that the message about the over-hard-as-a-hockey-puck eggs and dry wheat toast messages were apparently not passed on to the kitchen. Not exactly stellar service for the place being basically empty, but she did bring me a water refill without having to be asked, so there is that. I will say that the owner thanked me for the review I left on Google which reflected my sentiments here. At least they're taking notes, I suppose. It's kind of sad when a diner can't do a decent, very basic breakfast correctly. My total was $8 out the door with a tip of over 20% (not really deserved, but whatever...), and I honestly would have been better off buying a Bacon & Egg Biscuit at McDonalds. At least that would have only cost me $3. I'm going to recommend that people avoid this place until they can get their act together. They may yet do so, since the owner does appear to possibly be paying attention, but I have my doubts as to whether anything might actually improve. Don't say you weren't warned.

Marquel H.

Yelp
Ya know, passing by this place, you might think there has to be a better option and walking in the door, you might also think your initial feeling was correct, but on both accounts you'd be wrong. It's a little dated and maybe a little grungy. It is small and has an odd layout. It has an old school diner feel and like old school diners, you get good food and decent service, cheap. I have to say, I was really pleased with my food. I got a Philly cheese steak and fries and it was really good. The meat was quality, the bun was the right amount of soft but hearty. It had good flavor and there was no fat or grizzle. Our server had a bit of an edge to her, but she was accommodating and helpful in a no nonsense kind of way and the other patrons added to the character of the place. An older guy and his buddies were sitting outside the restrooms and one of them had a custom guitar he had built. He let me hold it and took some pictures of me with it, with my phone. When we were paying he offered to let my daughter touch it as well. We had a good laugh when he told her go ahead, touch it and I yelled a smart ass comment about a man telling my kid to touch it. I thought the server was going to fall down she laughed so hard. My daughter got breakfast and she loved it. The food is good. It may not be the fanciest place but you are going to get a good meal that isn't going to break the bank, and chances are, you'll see some pretty interesting people as well.

Yelp
A decent place with typical diner fare. The omelettes are very good. If you like avocados, they have many dishes that incorporate them. I usually order the healthy omelette and add avocado to it making it a super healthy omelette. Their homemade chili is just okay. They have coney chili that I call "condiment" chili. Then this kind of chili with beans that I call "eating" chili. Anyway, their homemade (eating) chili, is kind of "gummy" and thick and lacking a lot of flavor. Adding some Frank's Red Hot makes it a bit better. If you enjoy spinach pie as I do, a bit of advice: DO NOT ORDER IT HERE! Probably the worst spanakopita I've ever had. It's about 3" thick, for some reason. The taste and texture is like they made it a week before, froze it, then reheated it in the microwave. I gave it 3 bites and gave up. So if you go here, stick to the traditional diner fare; meatloaf, burgers, breakfast items, etc., and you won't be disappointed.

William S.

Yelp
Ordered a carry out breakfast. Eggs were ok Sausage had no flavor and hash browns tasted old Was not impressed with the meal. First and last time eating food from there. Enjoyed food when Double EE was in business. Get my meals from Ferndale Sam's grill.

Jordan S.

Yelp
Solid diner food in the metro-Detroit tradition: American greasy spoon, with doses of Greek and Italian. This is what food in the inner-ring used to be like, and it's good to have this no-frills, no-nonsense option around; sometimes you just need food, not an experience. I went to the Double EE for years and was bummed when they got forced out by the building's owner, but I'm glad he at least kept the menu and brought back most of the staff. The kitchen is a notch lower than Double EE, but perhaps the new cooks will figure out the old rhythm in time. I'm just glad to have my neighborhood diner back.

Gentiano Z.

Yelp
Great food very nice service clean restaurant m many choices great breakfast Lounge best hamburgers dinners meatloaf chicken pot pie grilled chicken steaks

Dustin J.

Yelp
Earl's is "the spot" for a quick bite in an traditional diner athmosphere. I was a frequenter of Double EE's for years and was very sad when they closed. Earl's is the new Double EE with a cleaner enterior, warmer service and a renewed attention to food! I'm in love all over again.

Irven K.

Yelp
My God Dee Dee the Hardest working waitress I have ever seen she is also a kind person in and out she cares deeply for her customers it is one happy family I feel like norm from cheers when I go there the owner Treats us like we are his family.

Katy S.

Yelp
We ordered for Earls during this crazy pandemic to support some local business and the food was amazing!!!! We got a club sandwich, and chicken finger pita, and two sides of fries. Very generous portions, great quality food. We will be ordering again, highly recommend. Can't wait to go in and sit to eat when this is over!

Rob O.

Yelp
Absolutely never coming here again. This was our fourth or fifth visit over the last 3-4 years and we've generally liked the place. A few days ago, we made it back, one of our first restaurant visits since the Covid-19 situation started and there was almost zero attention to any safety precautions. Few masks and the people wearing them usually had them hanging by their mouths or around their chins. I don't write many reviews and hadn't planned on writing this one but I then read a FB stream where another customer here complained about the same thing and was then absolutely attacked by staff there on line. This female staff member misspelled every other word while threatening to sue the customer... If you think Covid-19 is a hoax and you hate masks and following rules and laws, this is your place.

Jennifer F.

Yelp
We have ordered from Earl's every weekend since covid19 measures began in March (so...at least 7 consecutive weeks). I've gotten a chicken avocado salad every time and loved it. The medium size is PLENTY, even for a salad monster like me, and the price is amazing considering how generous they are with the avocado. The grilled chicken is always juicy and warm, and everything tastes fresh. My husband has gotten a variety of skillets and salads and liked the country skillet most by far. The only things keeping me from giving 5 stars are a) we haven't seen one person at their establishment wearing masks or gloves even after it became required, and b) they're often grumpy when we go to pick up. For these reasons, we didn't go back this weekend and have found other local diners to support that have recently reopened. That being said, if you're looking for a cheap, satisfying salad, try the chicken avocado!

Peggy K.

Yelp
We got breakfast carry out from Earl's this morning--same good food, just carried out because of COVID 19. ***Please all--support our local businesses! Ferndale is a wonderful community and we need places like Earl's to stay!!

Michael K.

Yelp
After a very hectic Friday, we decided to come here for a casual respite from the week. Also, I had a $30 restaurant.com coupon to use. I had the stuffed cabbage with mashed potatoes and green beans and my wife had her favorite, meatloaf with the same. Food was very good, portions huge and service timely and friendly. No pretense, no alcohol but good family-style dinner that is in nice contrast to pricey, hipster dining spots all over Ferndale.

Anthony S.

Yelp
My wife and I ate at Earls Diner on Thursday. She had the chicken pot pie and threw it up later that night! I had one bite and thought it tasted bad. I usually have a turkey rubin when we go out and that's what I ordered. Sandwich was soggy with the coleslaw juice. It was the worst TR I've had to date. My stomach was also not feeling good (I had taken 1 bite of my wife's chicken pot pie) for two days. We will not return to this place!!

John C.

Yelp
Food is ok but this restaurant and waitress staff gives off a negative vibe. It feels racially motivated but not sure. Never seen any minority waitresses, and very few minority customers. Even if I call in my order for take out, the waitress staff pressures you for a tip... tip you for what? I called in my order... tip you for handing me my bag of food? When I declined on tipping, the cashier, she frowned and made me walk over to pick my food up from the main counter, rather than hand it to me. If I dine in, I tip. If I do take out, I don't tip. Here's a thought, if the waitresses need more money, ask for a raise instead of pressuring take out costumers for tips.

Thomas S.

Yelp
Attentive service, hearty portions and the breakfast tasted great. A traditional diner serving up a decent breakfast.

Theresa D.

Yelp
Experienced for the last time the pathetic attitude of the tall skinny waitress. She literally complained for having to clean off the dirty wet table, we waited over 15 minutes for coffee and did not come back until it was time for the bill. Sorry Earl and the other staff. The food was always great!

Ted M.

Yelp
Ate at Earl's today. The restaurant is especially clean, including the kitchen and back room. We had the slab of ribs dinner, and fish and chips. The ribs were fall off the bone and deliciosos. The fish and chips were also good. I would not hesitate to return. I'm already planning my next visit. It's better than Double E. was. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

Adam M.

Yelp
Cant go wrong eating here... breakfast is best but any meal is always good. Has been that way for a long time since back when it was the double e .

Santi H.

Yelp
I was looking a place to eat one afternoon after picking up my parents. I had never heard of Earl's before so I decided to try it out and i was blown away by both the quality of food and service. Our server Chrissy was outgoing and always made sure we had everything we needed. I would 100% come back again. Great experience and a great place to bring the family

Nicole D.

Yelp
Worst food I've had in this city so far. If I could give it zero stars, I would. Awful service, awful food.

Enea T.

Yelp
That type of spot where you won't know about it unless someone tells you or you have been there yourself but it's so good and flavorful! Easy to drive by at first look but once you've ate there once, you won't drive by again without stopping!

Lorenzo S.

Yelp
Good food I have breakfast here all the time. The people are good I just really don't like one waitress but the rest are very good and friendly. They always know who I am when I call and the always try to take care of me. Thanks for the good breakfast!

Nicholas L.

Yelp
Very friendly staff and hard working people here, food is traditional diner made well.

May S.

Yelp
From the outside, it looked really small. But inside, it was a lot larger. The specials are really good. Some Greek options, but mostly American food. The Gyro with the baby Greek salad was wonderful and the Greek salad was really large. Prices for the food is reasonable and I have not had a bad meal yet. The waitresses are really nice.

Melanie F.

Yelp
I give Earls Diner a three. It has nothing to do with their food. Their food is quite good. As much as we order from this establishment, we will no longer be customers here. We picked up an order the other night, Wednesday the 17th, only to witness one of their employees loudly stating that COVID19 is BS and that she refuses to practice any of the safety measures. She wasn't wearing a mask nor was she wearing gloves, while going between the cash register and the food pick-up area. She called it fake. Over 115,000 people have died from this virus, with numbers increasing every day. People close to me have contracted this virus and become extremely ill. One of my close friends is an essential worker who went to help NYC with the outbreak. She reported how heartbreaking and terrifying it was due to the amount of people she and her team were caring for, as well as the amount of people that lost their lives. I was absolutely offended by your employee's hateful and self centered attitude and speech. The fact that you would continue to employ a person that would speak this way in front of customers is quite disconcerting. It certainly doesn't promote any confidence of safety in your business. If people don't want to believe what is right in front of their faces, that's fine. However, she is working in a food establishment that serves this community, and should be practicing safety measures put in place. We made the decision to throw our food out, and to find another establishment to order from. I love your food but this is a matter of the health and safety of your customers regardless of the personal beliefs of your employees.

Michael B.

Yelp
i was there this morning for bkfst. orderd the sunrise benedict. while the food itself was good. the waitress needs to find another line of work. she had one of the worst attitudes of a server I had ever seen. there was only me and one other table. she was inconvenienced by it all. phone rang asked to speak to cook. she loudly said he is too busy to talk and hung up. only gave me on cup of coffee, I had to go to counter for a refill. she walked away. the cook gave me my coffee. I went back to my table and she yelled do you have enough coffee now... gave her cc to pay bill she tossed it to side and walked away. i went to counter to pay. she rang it up than slamed it on counter. did not deserve a tip of any sort. gave her a dollar for her attitude. if I go back I wont tolerate her.

Joan R.

Yelp
Came last week for take out and they messed up the order but decided to give it another try. This time we went into the diner for dinner. Ordered a cheeseburger and asked that it be cooked thoroughly but not BURNT. Explained that the flavor of burnt meat irritates my stomach. Burger arrived at the table and I took the bun off to check and everything looked okay until I started to eat the burger and realized that the side of the burger with the cheese covering it was burnt. Told the waitress about it and again twice at the register as she was running my credit card (husband had a steak sandwich which was okay). Told her that I shouldn't have to pay for the burger since it was made wrong and I didn't eat it. She said I should have said something to her before she ran the credit card because now she can't do anything about it. I told her that I had twice said something to her and I asked to talk to the manager. The place is very small so you can see and hear everything and the manager said from behind the counter that he was too busy to come out and speak to me and couldn't do anything about the meal. Because of the attitude of the server and manager, we will definitely not be coming back.
