I stayed at the DoubleTree in Poughkeepsie for one night, and unfortunately my experience was not what I expected.
To start with the positive: the front desk staff was accommodating when I tried to check in early. Even though I only got in about 30 minutes ahead of time, I appreciated their effort and friendliness.
However, things went downhill once I got to the room. The room was extremely cold, and despite raising the temperature, it stayed stuck at 62°. Maintenance came up and removed the metal cover on the heating unit, told me it was taken care of, and left. What I didn’t realize was that the thermostat had been bypassed — meaning the heat was now blasting constantly with no way to adjust it.
I woke up in the middle of the night to a room that was 83° and climbing. It was unbearably hot and dry, and the thermostat didn’t work at all. By 6 AM, I couldn’t take it anymore. Someone from the front desk came up quickly, but all he did was turn the unit off completely and open the window. I was left with no functioning thermostat and no real solution.
When I tried to explain how uncomfortable and unsafe the situation felt, the staff member apologized and literally hurried out of the room without letting me finish. At checkout, I left my name and number and asked for a manager to call me. It’s now been a day and a half, and I’ve received no follow-up.
I don’t think I was asking for much — just a room with a working heating system. I can’t understand why the “fix” was to leave the heat blasting nonstop, essentially turning the room into an oven. I genuinely felt sick from how hot and dry it became.
I’m disappointed not only with the room condition, but also with the lack of response afterward. I hope management takes this seriously, because no guest should have to go through this.
