Doubting Thomas Review - Historic Filipinotown - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Until pretty recently, a coffee shop that had anything more than a few sad-looking pastries and maybe a plastic-wrapped sandwich was a rare species. Now, these kinds of spots seem to open every week. Doubting Thomas in Historic Filipinotown is one of them - and while it isn’t the kind of thing you need to cross town for anymore, if you happen to live nearby, you’ll be pretty happy it exists. At the bottom of a new apartment building on Temple, Doubting Thomas looks just like what you’ve come to expect from these sorts of more-than-a-regular-coffee-shop spots. It’s a long white space, with mismatched furniture, people in corners looking like they’re doing important things on their computer, and people in other corners eating a breakfast sandwich at 2pm because they live very different lives than you. The coffee is good, and the staff is friendly, but it’s really the food that everyone is here for. photo credit: Jakob Layman There’s enough on the menu that, if you rented one of the apartments upstairs, you could easily come every day and not get bored. While you can get bacon and eggs or a bowl of granola here, you can also have a pork shoulder burrito, a big slab of toast with burrata and tomatoes, or an egg-topped beef rice bowl. The food is hearty and filling, and some things - like the burrito - are truly fantastic. Others, like the rice bowl, end up being a little boring - but not so much that one of their housemade pastries (made with whatever fruit they got at the farmers market) can’t make up for it. One of those is enough to make you never want to step back in a regular coffee shop again. Food Rundown photo credit: Jakob Layman Thomas Breakfast Burrito We’re not sure why we didn’t think of putting pork shoulder in a breakfast burrito before, but we’re glad Doubting Thomas did. We just wish the green salsa on the side was a little spicier, but otherwise, this is a very good breakfast burrito. Pastries These change all the time, and often include straight-from-the-farmers-market ingredients. We’ve had morning buns with orange, fantastic apple turnovers, nectarine ricotta pastries, and truly excellent pain au chocolat here. You need to order at least one. Sage Sausage Breakfast Sandy If you’re thinking, “that kind of looks like a breakfast burger,” when this arrives at the table, you’re not wrong. Except this comes on biscuits and with a fantastic whole grain mustard, and honestly, that’s better than a burger. photo credit: Jakob Layman Tomato Toast You’ve had plenty of slices of bread with burrata and tomato on top of them. This one is different for two reasons: the fantastic seeded bread on the bottom, and the almond pesto on top. photo credit: Jakob Layman Shakshuka This is a fine shakshuka. The tomatoes are good, the creme fraiche on top is good, and the mint gremolata on top is good. But there are better things to eat here. photo credit: Jakob Layman Bistecca Rice Bowl We like the steak on this bowl, but everything else is pretty bland, especially the rice, which mostly just feels like filler." - Jess Basser Sanders

Google
This is my first time here. The place was very nice, clean and cute. It was a home style feel which was very comforting. The service I received was very friendly and professional and helpful when it came to questions that I had about the menu. I ordered a butter pecan ice latte with a half turkey wrap sandwich. I enjoyed both.

Nice space with so many things to experience. My stuffed waffle was good. Also had an opportunity to view the salvation presentation. It was a nice afternoon well spent.

Doubting Thomas is a great little cafe/coffee shop inside the Cross America facility. The coffee is always tasty. The staff is always friendly. The prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is always welcoming. The WiFi is reliable. This is a great place to meet with friends or get some remote work done. Highly recommended.

10/10 RECOMMEND! I like the plain bagel turkey sandwich. They pile it up! Their espresso is AMAZING! Such a great environment and the service was impeccable! The feeling of peace while dining here each time, can't be bought or sold. I LOVE this place! A great place to bring a friend or business associate for a coffee or quick lunch.

Wonderful atmosphere and people. Glad to see our money on purchasing is helping! Food was great and the drinks, amongst the conversations. These chips are very good, too. Thank you!!

Yelp
They were supposed to be open, but the gates were closed. They neglected to tell you that this is a church and not a standalone business. Very disappointed.

Yelp
This is by far the best coffee you can get while in Kokomo. They have a wide range of drinks to try. I have been coming here for years and continue to try new drinks. The service here is tremendous, all the staff is friendly and willing to go out of their way for their customers. Definitely check out Doubting Thomas if you are wanting a delicious hand crafted coffee!

Yelp
Best craft coffee in Kokomo (that I've trued). I was super excited to find a place where black coffee is drinkable :) The pour over I tried had a lot of flavor. There is plenty of seating near the bar and in an open room nearby. Staff was polite and knowledgeable. As others noted, the coffee bar is in a church. But, no one approached me to talk about religion.

Yelp
Wonderful experience!!! This place is a friendly, Christian environment that not only has beautiful decorations, but also wonderful coffee. I ordered an iced latte and the espresso flavor was wonderful. The espresso was made from Tinker Coffee, one of my favorite coffee roasters in Indianapolis. I am from the Indianapolis area, but I will definitely come here again.

Yelp
Awesome place, excellent espresso, amazing/super friendly service! Can't go wrong here

Yelp
First off. Incredible coffee. Though it has been quite inconsistent- it's still been some of the best craft coffee in town. I will chalk to inconsistencies up to it being new. The food and showcase however seem to have gone from a craft local pastry feel to a bulk gas station feel. I am sad to see the change. If I want a yummy cup of coffee I would choose to come through the drive thru( which isn't open yet) the young ladies in the shop are not the friendliest. Maybe I have high expectations but I do hope to see Doubting Thomas become something that doesn't feel like the rest of Kokomo- for all craft coffee and food junkies out there. PS: the craft waffles are awesome, but again inconsistent. Tasty either way.

Yelp
If religion makes you uncomfortable, maybe not the place for you, it was a shock walking in and it looking more like a church than a coffee shop. Besides that the food and the drink was AMAZING; the cheddar broccoli waffle was well worth it. The menu choices are amusing and humorous if you have a general knowledge of the Bible. The people are nice and welcoming, I would definitely come back again.

Yelp
Drive thru takes forever but the coffee is so good. I wish they opened at 7:00. but over all love it. The coffee is so smooth and one of the best in town. I wish I could come more often but I have to be at work 7:30. Is going every morning if I could.

Yelp
Grateful that there is a craft coffee option in town however I have to agree with a prior review that the coffee has been inconsistent. More than the coffee however I have been unimpressed with the customer service. Not once have I gone in and been greeted nor have I felt like those serving me want to be there or have knowledge about the product being offered. I wish I could say differently but hoping some honest reviews will help bring improvement.
