Inside the Oldest Family-Owned Grocery Store in America

"Established in 1884, I've found Doud’s Market on Mackinac Island to be a charming, old‑fashioned yet practical grocery that serves as the island’s Main Street hub and is celebrated as America’s oldest family‑owned grocery store. Under fourth‑generation owner Andrew Doud the 4,500‑square‑foot store — in a building dating to 1885 — was revitalized with fresh meat, produce, bakery items, and a grab‑and‑go deli offering whitefish dip, chicken pot pie, subs, and salads; signature items include the cherry chicken salad and cherry chicken salad wrap, and the market’s freshly made pizza (toppings range from Italian sausage and mushrooms to banana peppers) is a popular quick option. Modern conveniences such as self‑checkouts, online ordering, and a summer delivery service routed by horse‑drawn carriages sit alongside nostalgic touches — 19th‑century family and archival photos over the produce — reflecting the island’s car‑free character; the market is the only grocery in downtown Mackinac, stays open year‑round (busiest July through mid‑August), and faces unique purchasing and pricing challenges compared with big‑box stores." - Derin Yilmaz

Where to Dine and Drink on Mackinac Island

"Planning to bike around the island? Start your journey at the main location of Doud’s market, which is apparently the oldest grocery store in America…and quite possibly the only grocery store in the country where Jamaican Jerk cheese curds make perfect sense. Whether its cheese curds, fresh seasonal produce, or selections from the in-store kitchen’s extensive prepared foods section, there is no question this is where to fill that collapsible cooler you wisely packed." - Stacey Brugeman

Google
Very nice grocery. Clean and very busy. Obviously pricey being on an island. Bought these mini cream pies on Sunday. Pulled out of frig to eat Wednesday, 3 days later...moldy :( and there is no expire date on any of it. Now far from there traveling by boat. Just heads up

Marcos R.

Google
One of the best pepperoni pizza I had in the midwest. Do not get me wrong it is not an Italian pizza but is it very good and the price is reasonable. Other products’ prices maybe a little high but keep in mind that it is in a island

Sandra

Google
The oldest market in America. It's such a neat little gem and carries soooooooo much. It's a great place for the island and should be a national treasure.

Devin D.

Google
They literally do have basically everything you need. A tad pricey but that’s to be expected. Their pizza is absolutely amazing!! One of the best pies I’ve had. Not a bad Beer and alcohol selection as well

Kim M.

Google
Very reasonably priced market on Mackinac island! Great prepared food selections too. Salads, sandwiches, pizza, soups, coffee ready made to buy and go eat as a picnic right across the street, on the grass of the fort. Always our 1st stop for an over night stay too for snacks and beverages for the room. Great beer and wine selection. If you forget to pack any needed essentials they have those too!

William W.

Google
Nice place to shop but basically the only "grocery" store on the island. Selection is good but they do run out of some of the sodas. Of course, delivery to the island is different than stores on the mainland because everything is brought by boat.

Tristan Jonek (Tristan Robert J.

Google
It’s definitely A nice market and convenient for those who are visiting and those who are living on the island. The Problem I’ve been noticing Is they let too many people at one time to come in the market (not everybody comes in and buys stuff, just window shop). People Just constantly get in the way, especially at the checkout (I do like those contactless kiosks). They should perhaps let A certain amount of people in at one time, give them a short time frame to shop and let them go.

Katie U.

Google
As the sign notes, this is America’s oldest grocery store! The locals rely on Doud’s, which is open year-round, for their necessities. Since our last visit, Doud’s purchased the storefront next door and expanded the shop. If you forgot something, they have an aisle with toiletries and over-the-counter medicines. You can also grab a sandwich or salad to-go for a picnic, or order a fresh pizza from the counter in the back.

Yelp
COVID-19 Review- Doud's is a great option for purchasing picnic items or anything you forgot to bring with you on your vacation. Prices are higher (as they must be shipped into the island) but overall, I was impressed with the items available. Highly recommend you go and purchase picnic items and take them to the Mission Point lawn or space at the end of downtown (the 'beachy' area). I felt confident with management as I saw them taking COVID-19 precautions seriously. They refused to serve someone who refused to wear a mask (which is a statewide mandate).
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing grocery store. Grab a salad, sandwich, pizza slice and bike the island. Stop to eat your items with an amazing view.
google avatar

Rob K.

Yelp
Doud's gets it done every time, every single time. Friendly staff, good vibes, tasty food, and beverages. If I need a few things, or a quick snack, maybe even an apple for my team, I will be there. Giddy-up

Yelp
Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite places on the island. There's simply something so cozy and comforting about going to Doud's and knowing you'll find anything you're looking for. Doud's is the perfect spot to get essentials before a picnic on Mackinac! My boyfriend and I always grab drinks and fresh pizza slices or sandwiches before we venture over to Marquette Park. We recently stayed on the island for the first time and we loved how convenient Doud's is! When I say Doud's has everything .... I mean everything. Chips, dip, fresh meat and produce, hair products, baked goods, everything! I went there for breakfast. For under $3 you can get a sausage egg and cheese biscuit. Cheaper than McDonalds but so much tastier. Doud's also is the oldest grocery store so how cool is that??! Prices are pretty reasonable too. Don't forget to stop in and grab one of their fresh cookies! They are the best ever!
google avatar

Misty S.

Yelp
This is the only grocery store in town and it's a great one. In addition to groceries, they also have a grill in the back, salad bar and ready-made food. Menu options include sandwiches (Italian Melt, steak and cheese, club, etc.), pizzas, and gyro. Their bakery section offers a variety of pastries, brownies, cookies, bread and doughnuts. ....| \ _ , , , - - , , _ , .../ , ` . - ' ` ' . _ \ - ; ; ; , _ ..| , a - ) ) _ . ; . Yelp
What amazing little market to grab some food so you don't have to eat out the entire time. It sucks it's on the island because the city doesn't have any markets worth grabbing anything from. The prices are pretty good for it being on an island and so north. It's also cool it's the oldest market in the USA. They have many different things from pizza slices to dozen and great items you can grab on the go. The staff is friendly and very helpful. They have self scans and a cashier if you need one. I would for sure next time grab everything I need the first day from here so I don't have to take the boat over every time I need something.

Cindy S.

Yelp
What a great affordable find on Mackinac island! We discovered the pizza slices at the back of the store. They were less than $4 each. It was very quick service & the pizza was good. We were on a 50 minute wait for a restaurant that was going to be a minimum of $25 each. I went back later in the day for a snack. They also have hot & cold sandwiches as well as all kinds of groceries. We took our pizza & sat nextdoor at the park.
google avatar

Jacki R.

Yelp
Everyone told us to get take out and eat a picnic lunch on the lawn on mackinac for lunch. First of all? They don't tell you there are 2 locations-one in the center of town that is much smaller and one that is at the end of the downtown area near Ft. Mackinac. The one near the fort is much larger and had more options for sure. Highly suggest the larger store for a picnic lunch; however, expect to spend extra. I'm sure it costs extra to ship goods to the island and we didn't feel like it was price gouging.
google avatar

Stacy A.

Yelp
They have all the foods you'd want to eat if planning a picnic or avoiding overpriced restaurants. I enjoyed their rotisserie chicken, cheeses & summer sausage.
google avatar

Helen S.

Yelp
Great place to grab a sub or wrap made fresh. They also have hot food and pizza, chips and snacks as well as beer and wine. Take it next door to the park for a picnic in the shade. It's much better than standing in line for a crowded overpriced restaurant. This was the best pet of our trip.
google avatar

Katie U.

Yelp
This is the only grocery store on the island, and it's been family owned and operated since 1884. Doud's Market had a facelift in recent years and now boasts an updated and expanded selection. Expect a decent alcohol section and a fresh meat counter in the back. Also expect typical island prices to compensate for the shipping costs - a box of crackers will run you $4 a pop. That being said, it's nice to have a grocery store on the island to stock up on snacks. Fun fact: the Doud family is in some ways the royal family of the island. They also own the Windermere Hotel. Mrs. Doud was a lifelong resident and columnist for the Town Crier, and her daughter has been the island mayor since 1975.
google avatar

Vivian W.

Yelp
In downtown, very neat, has everything. A little pricy though. I only got water there.
google avatar

Yelp
This is an unreal story. So I purchased 3 panini's: ROASTED CHICKEN AND ARTICHOKE, SOUTHWEST TURKEY MELT, HAM AND TURKEY MELT. All were huge and delicious! I also picked up a small pack of pasta salad (fresh, very good). I also purchased 2 waters and a large diet coke with ice. Both cashiers made mention of a lanyard I was wearing and we joked. I spent $39 plus change. I went just outside on the bench and proceeded to wear everything out. I loved it! A guy from Chicago area told me I had to try this place and he was spot on. Ok, so here's the tailspin to this review: I returned to the market 10 minutes after leaving to get another large diet coke. I came to the front to pay for it. One of these same cashiers told me I needed to purchase at least $3 to use my credit card. I asked her how much the large diet coke cost. $2.50 was the answer. Then a stare at me like I am supposed to give you more $$$$Money. GOOD-BYE! Disgusted, I left the drink there and said for her to have a nice day. YOU RUINED MY REVIEW, you money-hungry Michiganders! this may be America's oldest family-owned grocery store, but maybe the customer service needs to graduate from the year 1884 BLEAH N-E-V-E-R-A-G-A-I-N From their website: "While customer interests have driven the market's evolution, there's one key principle hasn't changed: Just as when it was founded in 1884, Doud's Market aims to serve the community of Mackinac Island with care, quality and convenience." NO, you serve yourselves! In math I can make the x coordinate go into minus, why not here in stars? I felt like people must feel when you think you've married the sweetest partner on earth, only to find out you've married the devil AND there is no pre-nuptual agreement. The ice cream store "days" something...had great rum raisin ice cream. next door.

Yelp
LOVED Doud's! We stopped here every day of our 3 day trip to the Island. The best part about the market was the variety and prices. Honestly this market had as many varieties of groceries as my local market in Royal Oak! The prices were the same too, which impressed me the most. For being the only market on the island, I was expecting super inflated prices but everything was incredibly reasonably priced. The market had a variety of beer, wine & liquor which is what we used Doud's for twice on our trip. In the back of Doud's there is a grab & go pizza bar (which looks great) and a counter for deli sandwiches and larger pizzas. We ordered two sandwiches (roast beef and turkey) - both were phenomenal but the speed of the staff working the counter was horrible. They were slow, didn't acknowledge waiting customers and had no sense of urgency. The quality and taste were so good I still give Doud's a 5 star rating. We were able to take our sandwiches for a picnic nearby (the park or marina).
google avatar

Alyssa E.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing market. There is a large selection of meat and cheese trays, pizza by the slice, tons of salads and other items to grab and have a picnic in the park which is right next to the market. This is also a higher end grocery store with fresh cut meats and great produce. This place has changed so much in the last 5 years.

Don W.

Yelp
These folks have a captive audience but they are fair given the added costs of living on an island. They try to carry what folks need who live there and those visiting for only a day.
google avatar

Jill O.

Yelp
This is seriously the cutest little grocery store- and the only one on the island. It has all the essentials one could need. They also know their audience in the summer season. They have tons of premade sandwiches, salads, and things like that that are perfect for a picnic. There's also a good amount of cold drinks, so it's a great place to have on your radar to beat the heat with something that isn't ice cream!
google avatar

Herbert E.

Yelp
'Ello chaps! Doud's Market is one of two "supermarkets" open year round on Mackinac Island. Doud's Market has been around itself since 1884 and has just about everything you'd expect to find at a typical grocery store. Cereal, boxed pastas, chips, beer, soda, baked goods, fresh meat in the deli, plus hot food served at the back end café and deli. There are also some non food ideas available for sale, including mops. Brooms, cleaning supplies, and so forth. Stop in for dinner supplies, or a quick snack, they have it. Just know, you're on the island and going to pay island prices which can range from $1-$3 more per item than the cost on the main land.
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
This is the only market on the island, so of course its a must see! I expected it to be much smaller but they have a great array of options and hot and cold food ready to go. We came in here to avoid a pricey lunch at one of the restaurants on main street. They had a pizza section, a whole salad bar, tapenade station, and a fridge section of sandwiches and potato salad like things. I am vegan and they had a tofu curry dish which I still crave to this day. Please don't get rid of it!!! Really cool to see all the local Michigan food options that they have stoked and support in there. Would recommend if you are looking for a different type of lunch or dinner. We walked to the water front and had a nice lunch outside at a fraction of the cost.

Nitin A.

Yelp
Well. You have one grocery store on a tourist island. The least you can do is be nice to people. They came here to have a good time. I 'had to' visit the corner counter ,where they keep liquor, twice. And the experience was less then unpleasan both time consistently. My Tip, Goto the billing at center counters, hopefully your day will not be ruined.
google avatar

M F.

Yelp
Not all all focused on customer service or the actual experience - no greeting, no good bye, just about taking the money. Too bad, it has a nice location but the service was no up to any standard.
google avatar

Heather J.

Yelp
If you live on Mackinac year-round, you know Doud's. How could you not? As the only grocery store and market on the island operating after tourist season descends, the locals definitely make a point of stopping in. However, you're probably like me: staying on the island or visiting from Mackinaw City or St. Ignace. Doud's needs to be a stop on your jaunt around town if you didn't cart food over on the ferry. Tourists overwhelm Doud's throughout the height of the summer looking for the same fare you are, picnic supplies and snack foods to carry you through that long looping route through the State Park on a bike. Don't underestimate your need for proper fuel or anyone else's knowledge about Doud's. They will be at the supermarket, same as you. The aisles contain plenty of non-perishable staples ranging from dry cereal and crackers to pop and cookies. Fresh bread, fruit, and vegetables can be picked up here. The deli is the real star of the show, especially when showing up early. Skip the cafes and eateries around Main Street and slap together your own sandwich for about the same price. Kids in particular can get a kick picking out a few options from the deli, which is always a welcome treat. They've been at this since 1884, one of the oldest grocers in the country, so the formula clearly works. Do be prepared to pay more, however, as Mackinac's lack of proximity to a Meijer or Target obviously impacts prices. Someone has to pay for the ferry/barge service bringing supplies over.
google avatar

Roger I.

Yelp
Doud's is a great place to pick up snacks, drinks or those things you just want to have in your room. They do sell a lot of beverages, including Beer, wine and liquor. The great thing about them is if you want to go have a picnic, you can buy sandwiches and salads already made and everything you need to go along with it. Then you just take them along with you on your bike ride or walk and find a great place to sit and enjoy your food. Remember that everything has to come to the island by boat, so their prices are a little higher than you would find on the mainland. You can also find pizza by the slice, if you just want something quick. If you're on the Island, I'm sure you will be in there for something.
google avatar

Emily K.

Yelp
This place is adorable and I was able to get batteries and medication I forgot here really easily and quickly. I wish I was on the island for more days to take advantage of that olive bar and liquor department. Awesome!
google avatar

Ronald M.

Yelp
I do understand the pricing for items, but some seems to way higher. I know all the foods must travel to island via boat or plane and that adds to the costs. We purchased 2 Cokes at $3.50 for 2 liters and that was high for us. It is neat to see what others were paying for like 12 beers for OMG pricing, about what the bars charged.
google avatar

Joshua M.

Yelp
Perfect little market at the end of the downtown area. Conveniently located right next to a large grassy park area where you can have a nice picnic. Prices are a little high as you would expect.
google avatar

Elaine M.

Yelp
Everything you need for a picnic lunch or dinner. Hot sandwiches in the back, cold sandwiches and salads in a refrigerated case along with salads and sides. Pick up a bag of chips, fresh veggies, cookies, and drinks and you're all set!
google avatar

Peg G.

Yelp
This is (A) a very comprehensive grocery store, with all the pasta shapes, gourmet cheeses, specific crackers and types of flour a cook could require and (B) THE BEST place to grab a quick, hot, cheap, delicious lunch. There's pizza, two or three hot casseroles and vegetable side dishes, homemade soup (for chilly island days) and an awesome salad bar. Take your loot to Marquette Park and relax!
google avatar

Tina V.

Yelp
Good place, seemed like they had good stuff. Only needed toothpaste. However the staff, just like the staff everywhere on the Island was unfriendly and disconnected.
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
Nice grocery store. I'm staying at the Chippewa Hotel across the street and have been grabbing my morning coffee here. They open early and stay open late as they are the island's only grocery store.
google avatar

Amy D.

Yelp
A trip to the island MUST include a visit to Doud's Market. This weekend it was to get lottery tickets (if we won we would have stayed longer) and a half-gallon of chocolate milk (for the 4 year old grandson)!! This market has everything you need and it is just FUN to shop here! It's a staple on our island trips!
google avatar

Jack Q.

Yelp
This place has a great selection of food, wines, and interesting prepared foo foods. Right on main Street and across the from Marquette Park just the place for a Picnic.
google avatar

H R.

Yelp
Basically this is your own and only grocery store if you're one to live here year round. The pizza here is pretty good but like mentioned in other reviews, super expensive! Good for the tourists I guess.
google avatar

James L.

Yelp
Stopped in here a couple times during my Mackinac Island trip with my wife. This place is a pretty good supermarket and has everything any one would ever need. Overall, as a tourist staying nearby this is a good option to pick up something quick when on a strict budget and bypassing some of the pricier reataurant options further down Main Street.
google avatar

Ken Z.

Yelp
Two locations... there is a small outpost on Main Street that has pre-packaged sandwiches, hot pizza, cold beverages, etc. This is not the main Doud's... the main location is all the way at the "end" of Main Street by the Fort. Three slices of pizza, a bag of chips and two pre-made sandwiches ran us $33. My sandwich was tasty. Four bar stools line the window of the small outpost location.
google avatar

Richard S.

Yelp
I finally found what could be a "normal" grocery store on Mackinac Island. It answers the burning question of "Where do people who live on the island do their everyday shopping?" They have all the common groceries you would find in a standard convenience store, including a well-stocked supply of alcohol. Some of their items are a tad pricier than what you would find on the mainland, but the markup is not unreasonable considering their supply and location. I wish I would've found this place before I shelled out $4 apiece for a bottle of beer at the nearby bar. They have a full aisle of cold beer and shelved liquor for regular prices. After finding this place, I decided to brownbag my beer for the rest of my evening on the island. I'm not sure how legal that was, but I saved a ton on alcohol.
google avatar

Valerie L.

Yelp
A great resource on the island. We visited for the day and needed a couple of staples. Everything is available here in this quaint little market. Definitely a great resource.
google avatar

Steve R.

Yelp
Great selection of groceries and various items you may need. We stopped by to purchase everything from contacts solution to chips. A great location right on Main Street, it's a great spot to pick up whatever you may be looking for.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
We grabbed a couple sandwiches, chips and drinks then sat on the lawn in front of the fort. It was a nice little picnic and no wait for a table.

Sherry K.

Yelp
Dirty rundown and smells like horse manure has a vast wine selection
google avatar

Lemae H.

Yelp
Stopped to grab a bottle of water. Got into a discussion with the snotty cashier over 40¢ difference in what the advertised price and what she was charging. Got a refund and went elsewhere.
google avatar

Jason V.

Yelp
Ordered food for a 40 person event at Mission Point. Subs/salads/fruit/cheese/crackers. All wonderful and delivered at the time promised. A++
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Best place to pick up food and enjoy while biking the island or just sitting on the grass and enjoying the views.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
This is one of the only, if not the only, 'grocery' type store on the island. The GF and I stopped here to get chips, soda, and some chocolate. Slightly overpriced, but that's what you get for being on the island - transport fees must be sky high. Friendly cashiers!
google avatar

Julie H.

Yelp
If you want an inexpensive drink or snack while you're on the Island, this is the place to go. Also great for picking up those toiletry items you may have forgotten.

C G.

Yelp
Great store with all the necessities. Definitely the place to go for water snacks and any picnic necessities. They even have a deli where you could get picnic foods. A little pricey but what isn't on the island!
google avatar

Jackie A.

Yelp
We really agree this was the best place for lunch. The two of us shared a sandwich and crab salad from the deli and ate outside. The food was prepared for us fresh and delicious for maybe $12. The people were friendly and the place was very clean and even fun (though a little cramped).
google avatar

Shay V.

Yelp
Good little market on Main St. Great for picking up drinks and miscellaneous items. The prices are unfortunately high, but understandable considering that they have to freight everything over.
google avatar

Nathan L.

Yelp
We agree that this place is THE place to eat lunch on the island. The sandwiches from the deli in the back are excellent and the price tag of $8 includes a beverage. I highly recommend the cherry chichen salad sandwich, and the southwestern turkey was really good as well. You can grab lunch and eat on the giant lawn in front of Fort Mackinac.

C C.

Yelp
I recommend coming here if you're on Mackinac Island! The deli is in the back, and I got a lot of good advice on which sandwich to choose. Their menu is extensive. You can grab lunch at this cute market, even plastic glasses with your mini bottles of wine, and picnic across the street on the lawn in front of the fort. I promise you will get a great meal for less the price than what you would spend at any of the lakefront stores. My tomato bread panini with grilled chicken, kale, provolone and pesto aioli was quite delicious. You can custom order your sandwich, whatever to your liking!
