Over the years, this bakery has exchanged hands many times. I have wonderful associations with being on Balboa Island and enjoying pecan rolls, particularly after runs in the Back Bay. Through owners, I've always been grateful that they have all maintained offering pecan (and cinnamon) rolls. These rolls (August 2021) are larger than others, and less sweet. My son remarked that some bites were almost spicy because of the intensity of the cinnamon. Maybe not for everyone, but I did appreciate this tweak. However with size came less gooey-ness and more bites that were just dry dough. I would prefer a smaller, moister, more gooey roll. However if size is what you're after, and you don't like sweet pecan rolls, than these might be the rolls for you. I also ordered an iced coffee. With the departure of Starbucks from the island, the choices are slim for iced coffee. It was OK. Nothing bad, nothing great. It could have been a lot worse!
The establishment appears to be somewhat anti-mask and anti-mandates. The employees were not wearing masks (not currently mandated at the time, but recommended by the CDC because of the recent uptick in cases and Delta variant). And there were multiple signs/stickers making it clear that they were against mandates, and believe that "faith over fear" will protect them. I will be taking my business elsewhere in the future, for the sake of my own safety. If the pecan rolls were better, maybe it would be worth the risk. But alas this generation is not worth the calories or infection risk.
