Pacific Northwestern Dumpling Chain Dough Zone Opens Its Happy Valley Outpost | Eater Portland

"Opened April 1, the Happy Valley outpost continues the Washington-born Dough Zone's focus on dumplings and bao; founded in 2014 by Jason and Nancy Zhai in Bellevue, the group quickly won over Seattle-area diners and has since expanded across Washington, Oregon, California, and Texas. I found the menu sticks to the chain's hits—various xiao long bao and more than 50 other items—including steamed, fried, boiled, and soup-filled dumplings with fillings like crab and Berkshire-Duroc pork, and the popular “Q-Bao,” which is similar to seared-and-steamed sheng jian bao and is steamed and pan-fried to give the pork-filled version a soft, almost fluffy texture with a crisp base. The restaurant also offers noodle dishes, gua bao–style sandwiches filled with beef, and scallion pancake wraps, bringing the full Dough Zone lineup to Happy Valley." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Dough Zone Dumpling House Plans Two More Portland Restaurants in 2023 | Eater Portland

"Another Dough Zone is expected to open in the fall at Happy Valley’s Clackamas Town Center (11840 SE 82nd Avenue), and like the Beaverton and other shopping-center outposts it will likely be smaller than the sprawling Portland location." - Clair Lorell

The ordering system has some issues, and there were some good dishes and some that could be better, but it was a different experience, unlike what I've had here in the US before. Our evaluation of the dishes: - beef wrap: alright, but a bit oily and could be improved with cilantro - sweet and sour cucumber: tasty, little bit like cold crushed cucumber with vinegar in China - sesame kale salad with peanuts: a little salty but seemed healthy and fresh - Dan Dan noodles: quite a bit of numbing spice, and you can tell the noodles aren't fresh made, but it was tasty - xiaolongbao (steamed small pork dumplings)- very similar to the same dish in Shanghai, which we all enjoyed - pan fried dumplings (sheng jian bao)- This is the one dish we would not recommend. The dough was gummy and undercooked. In Suzhou, Jiangsu, China, these dumplings are traditional, and they should be crispy on the bottom, piping hot inside with plenty of meat broth, and garnished with sesame seeds or green onion on top. Despite this, we enjoyed the other dishes. As I've lived in China, it's not accurate to call this "dim sum" in the normal sense of Cantonese-style small dishes. The food is a mix of small dishes from east China (like xiaolongbao) and north China. I liked that you can order a variety of small dishes to share (you'll need to order two dishes per adult at least). The restaurant's service system seemed to be a bit of a mess. Several different wait staff came by to take our order, refill water, and bring dishes. The dishes seem to come out whenever the kitchen gets them ready, which is typical for restaurants in China. One of our dishes was forgotten though, but it was good that, once the mistake was noted, we were given the dish to go for free. The waiter should have checked each dish on our order, or the whole could be put in via scanning a QR code (the latter is totally normal for China now and is way more convenient than how orders are usually taken here). There were plenty of parties with kids. It's easier to order for kids since the dishes are small and easily split. The prices seemed reasonable.

This Dim Sum restaurant is delicious. We ordered several items off of the menu and enjoyed them all! I suggest coming here with friends or the whole family so you can share lots of the yummy dishes. The sweet and sour cucumber, pan fired pot stickers, the Chinese crepe, and the wontons in chili sauce were the best. They provide chili sauce on the table if you want to make it a little more spicy, but over all the things we ordered were not spicy at all, just very flavorful. Service was fast and relaxed. They came when they needed to, and let us hang out and chat without interruption for a long while.

Google
Overall, everything was well prepared, flavorful, and quickly served. The steamed chicken dumplings had a delicious broth inside and the pork bao buns had a lovely fluff and filling! The Dan Dan noodles weren’t too great; they just tasted like ginger. The fried dumplings and wontons were delicious though and I’d get them again! Interior is nice and spacious with golden warm lamp light(big windows) and plenty of seating for larger parties. KEEP in mind: groups of more than 8 need to call ahead.

Google
There are dishes that were good and others that are mediocre. The xiao long bao were delicious in both pork and pork + crab options. The pork wonton soup tasted okay, but it was lukewarm when it came out. The steamed pork and shrimp dumplings were also okay with a thicker than usual wrap that some may prefer. The beef noodle soup was not right at all! It was just in a clear broth. For some reason it completely differs from another item called beef noodles, which is in a smaller bowl but has a tastier broth. Odd. Like other reviewers, we found the pan fried dumplings disappointing. It was tough on the outside and gooey on the inside. That's not how it's supposed to be. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. They tried their best to make things right for us.

Google

I'm sure they're appreciate it. appreciate the service. there's lots of locations and it's really good. and yeah so yeah have fun

Google
It’s a pretty good place overall. Favorite food items are beef-Stew noodle soup, sweet & sour cucumbers and fried wontons. I really disliked the glass noodle soups.

Google
I ordered from Doordash and I will never get food from this place again. The Dan Dan noodles were about as much as you'd get in a ramen package. Honestly I could have made better noodles at home. They were greasy and the flavor was unimpressive. The pot stickers were not even as good as the ones from the grocery store freezer section. I don't understand what the appeal is we couldn't even eat this food.

Gladbear

Google
Came here before leaving back to Washington state and honestly the food was 9/10. We grabbed a shrimp/pork pot stickers that didn’t smell great and didn’t taste it either. Soup dumplings are 10000/10. Would come back and order just pork soup dumplings and wontons 😤🫶🏻

Yelp
What a pleasant surprise! My husband was looking for something new on DoorDash tonight and found Dough Zone. We didn't know what to expect, and it was fantastic. My husband just said "My mouth is happy".

Yelp
This was our first time going to Dough Zone. Staff were friendly and did their best but they brought our food to the wrong table and luckily the people sitting there pointed out they hadn't ordered yet. Seemed like the staff members were new and still figuring it out. Ambience was ok, nothing fancy. My gripe was the table had not been cleaned or not cleaned well. There was oil of some kind on the table and one of the seats was sticky. That always makes me question the cleanliness of the kitchen. Food here is just ok. Some of the dumplings were good. The soup dumplings however tasted just like Trader Joe's soup dumplings. I mean exactly the same. If I go out to eat and am paying a premium I want something I can't get in the frozen food section for way less money. Overall, it was just ok. There are so many options for great Asian food around here that I don't think we will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Staff: friendly New recipe: all their dumplings now have meat. There are NO vegetarian dumplings at all. And almost nothing a vegetarian can eat. A pancake or some cucumbers, thats all. Disappointing, since they used to have a different recipe for their vegetable filling. Vegetarians - go elsewhere
google avatar

Yelp
It's always fun to go get dumplings, and these ones are pretty good. The soup dumplings are a family favorite! The bao is good but our pork ones this time had lots of grease in them; so much that it drizzled when you took a bit while they were warm. They are lacking in kid friendly drink options with only one juice (sour plum) on the menu and no bottled milk options; something to keep in mind. The staff is efficient but on the colder side of working with customers.

Yelp
My partner and I had been looking forward to this place opening for a long time, as we love soup dumplings and were VERY excited to try this place! Unfortunately our experience was less than stellar. We went on a Saturday, around 145pm. The restaurant was half full. We were greeted upon entering and brought to a table, and asked if we had been there before. We let them know we hadn't, and were brought a paper and told we could pull up a digital menu. They also brought us two glass of luke warm tap water with no ice. I don't mind digital menus at all, but luke warm tap water was....ehhh....not the best start. All of the tableware, chopsticks, plates, spoons, cups, ect are plastic...which is fine, but felt a bit cheap given the interior looked nicer and clashed a bit with the vibe it felt like they were going for. We had numerous people waiting on us, so not really a single server. We ordered multiple dishes (seen in my images), and they were okay (seriously, nothing was bad at ALL, but all of it reminded me of what I often steam for myself that I buy frozen from the Asian market). What concerned me was after ordering two of my dishes came instantly. Literally. It wasn't sixty seconds. They read the ticket and brought ALREADY prepared scallion pancakes and the spicy beef wrap that either was sitting made or was popped in a warmer. The texture was slightly off and parts were warm and parts were just room temperature. It had very little flavor and like a lot of the food was just....bland. The soup dumplings needed seasoning IN the filling. Yes, you are expected to dip them in soy and vinegar, but the filling was rather bland, and that came across in their dumplings too. They weren't bad, they were just...okay. It reminded me of the kind I get frozen in a big bag at Costco. We spent about 60 bucks for a two person meal. We weren't expecting a Din Tai Fung quality meal...but I personally felt I could make a better meal at home with the dumplings I steam from my local H-Mart. It was also a shame that since we never really had a single server, if there was an issue there wasn't a single person to address it with, and half of the time the staff wasn't available and was in the back unless they were bringing out trays to multiple tables, only to drop them off and disappear after reading the tickets on the edges of the tables. The service could use some work in my opinion. I don't think we'd go back, if it remains as it is.

Yelp
So happy that there's a dough zone in Clackamas now!! Got some dishes to eat there and also a couple things to go. There was surprisingly no wait on a Sunday evening when we arrived around 5:30pm. The inside isn't quite as nice as the other location but still clean and nice. Everything was yummy, our favorites remain the Q bao and the Pork and crab XLB. Pig ear was good too and added some spice. The chive pockets and potstickers were just a touch salty for our taste. The sesame dressing on the salad was delicious. Excited to have this close by and can't wait to go back!

Yelp
I've been looking forward to trying Dough Zone at Clackamas Town Center. It's easy to drive right to it as it's close to what was Sears. The atmosphere is bright, inviting and felt welcoming versus the one downtown where it felt very cavernous. We went during the middle of the week, so it wasn't busy and there were no lines. We didn't order a lot, just three items to share which was enough for lunch for my husband and I. The service was good and the food was as expected. Excellent Xiao Long Baos and my favorite was the fried chive dumplings. I would say the prices are on the expensive side, so it probably would not be a regular place for lunch where I would go a couple times a week.

Yelp
There is an old joke from Annie Hall where two elderly women are complaining, "Boy, the food at this place is really terrible." The other one says, "Yeah, I know; and such small portions." While I hesitate to quote Woody Allen, it is what came to mind while dining at Dough Zone. However, let me be clear, the food is definitely not awful; it is simply mediocre. And the serving sizes are smaller than my favorite dim sum restaurants in town. But, guess what else was smaller than expected... the bill. This restaurant recently opened in Clackamas Town Center (one of the outer restaurants), so it is easy to access and the dining area is spacious. So we had no issue getting a table and service was perfectly fine. It was all just a bit blah. We ordered a bunch of items: Green Onion Pancake, Pork XLB, Pan-fried pork buns, Pork & Shrimp boiled dumplings, and spicy Ma La Noodles. It was all consumed and we felt fine, but none of it was memorable. If I am in the area, I would give it another shot, especially for a quick lunch, but it isn't a destination restaurant or in the regular rotation for me.

Yelp
The food was good and service was quick. The restaurant is bright and open. Also, wasn't as busy as we'd expected. Will be back with friends.

Yelp
I ordered take out through Door Dash as my work is down the street from here. The bar is pretty low for a work lunch. Really I'm starving and anything will do. Hate to say it, but this was an exceedingly disappointing lunch even by work standards. The scallion pancake was old, soggy and greasy and the dumplings weren't very flavorful. Wouldn't recommend it for take out.

Amayah E.

Yelp
This place was actually pretty good! The noodles weren't my favorite but I appreciate all the options they have, I recommend for some of your noodle cravings, their glass noodles are the only gluten free noodles. The servers were pleasant and this was a great place to go on a solo date and get some work done!

Yelp
OPENING DAY!! :D Ever since they opened a location in Portland, I've been patiently waiting for them to open one closer to me and my prayers have been answered! Haha. I instantly fell in love with Dough Zone when I first tried them in Seattle. I'm so happy their chain is expanding to other parts of the U.S. We didn't know how busy it would be, so we arrived 30 minutes before opening and we happened to be the first ones! They kindly seated us 20 minutes til, but made us aware that they don't officially open until 11am which was A-ok. This location is very open and spacious and the tables can easily be moved around to accommodate larger parties. We ordered Q-bao (my fav), pork Xiao long bao, dan dan noodles, yi bin noodles, mala noodles, jasmine milk tea and passionfruit green tea. Editor's note: everyone raves about the dan dan noodles, but I personally favor the yi bin noodles. It's peanut-y and slightly milder, but delicious above all else! The food is consistently delicious. I'm so so happy to have one near our neck of the woods! I'm also hoping this is the beginning of more and more well-known asian businesses taking root in the growing Happy Valley community! We are here and we are plenty! The restaurant is situated right across the REI re-supply store (down the escalators by Dave and Buster's).

Donna M.

Yelp
Everything was delicious! And made fresh to order! The fried dumplings were top notch!
google avatar

Miki M.

Yelp
Welcoming this business to Clackamas / Happy Valley area. We mostly loved their cuisine, and the restaurant is beautifully designed and arranged. It's a bit more low key compared to Din Tai Fung, the latter being the more premium / higher end experience. Being a foodie, I spent about $60 for a 2 persons meal. But I am sure it's possible to eat well for less money than that. Wishing them best of luck!
google avatar

Joe K.

Yelp
Went on the recommendation of my son and can say without a doubt I will not be back. Food was mediocre at best. Got 6 different dishes to share between the three of us and all of them were bland. It very much seemed like what I could go to Trader Joe's and get out of the frozen food section and cook myself with better results. Our server was nice and took our order fairly quick. We had only been there about 15 min though, and had only received 3 of the 6 dishes before she was asking if we were done and ready for our check. She seemed very surprised that we hadn't gotten the other dishes and finished them yet. It was very odd. I know this place is pretty popular, but I'm not a fan at all. If you're looking for mediocre Chinese food at a premium price from a place with a chain restaurant vibe then this is your place to go....
google avatar

Lauren K.

Yelp
Whoop whoop grand opening day!!! My family and I have always loved Dough Zone and we are so excited to have them in Happy Valley! It's a huge space with an open layout, fantastic decor, and plenty of parking. As always, their food is consistent, just as equally as tasty as the downtown location. We ordered our usual pork xiao long bạo, steamed pork buns, and dan dan noodle. Huge shout out to the manager, Ann, for her awesome service and recommendation of fried wonton and beef stew noodle soup! The wontons have a crispy outer layer and flavorful sauce. The noodle portion was huge with tender beef, for under $10! Bonus points for the free utensil set we got! Can't wait to come back again!
google avatar

Cin T.

Yelp
How truly disappointing. Almost all of the vegetarian options have tofu. Just why? Maybe someday restaurants will have more than just sides for vegetarian options. The menu clearly states tofu in the bao buns but not the potstickers. So we came thinking I could have the cucumbers and potstickers but I could only have the cucumbers. How does a chef feel pride when customers sit hungry while everyone else is eating because you cannot be honest on the menu. Do better.

TIna L.

Yelp
I've tried the Seattle location and was very unimpressed, so I had very low expectations walking into this location. I was pleasantly surprised how fresh all of the food tasted. In Seattle, the dumplings tasted like they had been premade, frozen, and heated up again (hard outside, flavorless meat). However, here the dumplings were soft and flavorful. The soy sauce is VERY salty so I recommend going easy on that. The space is large and clean. The service is relatively fast. Overall, I was very impressed. The place also takes feedback very well. I saw some reviews complain about not having vegetarian options and the day I arrived, there were giant posters advertising vegetarian options.
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
Most things we tried were good but the Shrimp zucchini dumplings didn't have much shrimp. The Q Bao pan fried buns were especially delicious. If Din Tai Fung is too far, this is a good substitute.
google avatar

Roxy B.

Yelp
So excited to have @DoughZone's third Oregon location nearby. Originating from Bellevue, WA in 2014, they have over 50 dishes designed for sharing & savoring. Finally went after much anticipation, it did not disappoint. Food & staff were awesome, great ambiance. My favorites were the Q-Bao, Beef Stew Noodle Soup, and their signature XLB, Berkshire-Duroc Pork Soup Dumplings.
google avatar

Shannon R.

Yelp
I was so disappointed in this place not only do they not offer any vegetarian dumplings, or much of anything, when we went the noodle machine wasn't working so that wasn't an option either. The service was fine and our server was very apologetic but I won't be back.
google avatar

Dori H.

Yelp
This is a MUST try in the area. Even only a week into opening, the food coming out of the kitchen is exceptional. We ate fried wontons, q-buns, fried dumplings, dan dan noodles, and sweet and spicy cucumber. Of these, surprisingly the cucumbers and dan dan noodles and wontons were our favorites. There was a consistent level of spice that allowed you to access the right notes on your palette to be fulfilled in all the best ways. The price is pretty reasonable, also. For a solid 9-meals, we only paid $70 with a nice tip. The service and ambiance are a work in progress, but we appreciated the attentiveness of the waitstaff. Overall, this will be a place that we will return to over and over again! We cannot wait to explore more of the menu.
google avatar

Elizabeth F.

Yelp
Ordered take out and they come in cute boxes and a nice bag. Wontons with chili oil were very good with a slight spice. My son has become a xio long bao enthusiast and he says these soup dumplings were the best he's had. The pork noodles were good too and a little spicy.
google avatar

Ermelita A.

Yelp
My partner, son & I went here yesterday & it was really good! I love the dishes & silverware Very Family Oriented too!
google avatar

Camille S.

Yelp
Good for a lunch spot. I don't think I'd come for dinner. My fiancé and I came for lunch and decided to split a few things. Service was pretty quick at 2 on a Sunday afternoon. Dan Dan noodles were okay, was not overly impressed. Next time I'd get something else instead. Also got their soup dumplings which were very good and affordable for 8 dumplings. Pork Bao were also pretty tasty. You get 4 which feels fair for the price. Over all I feel like for the price it is good. Wouldn't come for dinner because it does feel pretty casual and brightly lit.

Tammi H.

Yelp
So happy for this addition to Clackamas Mall :) we are so lacking in good Asian food around here. For people unfamiliar, this is not "dim sum", it is soup dumplings and other small plates. Order about 3 items per adult. There are not a lot of vegetable items, it is going to be oily, so just accept that. My recommended order for 2 people: 1 sweet and sour cucumber 1 soup dumpling (pork, pork and crab, or chicken) 1 dan dan noodle (not spicy) or ma la noodle (spicy) 1 onion pancake 1 fried pork potstickers 1 pork wonton with hot and sour sauce For the soup dumplings, make a small bite and suck up the soup. Then dip the rest of the dumpling in a mix of vinegar/soy sauce/ginger before eating. Hope it does well and becomes a staple at the mall.
google avatar

Barry L.

Yelp
Food 5 stars Service Adequate 3 stars Ambiance factory like 2 stars Restaurant a bit difficult to find. It would e helpful if they advertised that they were actually in the Clackamas Mall.
google avatar

Kyle B.

Yelp
The food and service was amazing. Staff was very friendly and made sure to check in on us often. Food came out quickly and tasted great. The inside is very modern and cozy. So happy to have a location in Clackamas and Ill be back often!

Colin H.

Yelp
We were pleasantly surprised at the prices, and were excited to try something new. Since we were in a hurry, we ordered takeout so we didn't get a good idea of the service or ambiance. However the graphics on the walls and staff we interacted with were nice. Where this place falls short is the portion sizes. If it had been marketed as a tapas style restaurant we wouldn't have been surprised, but when you pay $25 for a "kids meal" sized portion we were not happy. Overall flavor of the dishes was delightful, but we won't be retiring due to the lack of clarity on portion sizes. In order to get a full meal here you would need to spend upwards of $100 for a party of 2 or more. There are plenty of noodle/asian fusion restaurants in this area that will leave you satisfied at a quarter of the price.
google avatar

Suyoung L.

Yelp
Everything we ordered was so delicious! Food came out pretty quick, and prices are affordable. Whole everything seem to be so expensive everywhere, this place is surprisingly reasonable prices. It does have a commercial atmosphere but it's okay. While I understand it's "dough" based food, with they have some type of rice dish like fried rice or plain steamed rice.

Anh T. N.

Yelp
Food was ok.. we ordered fried dumplings but the waiter ended up bringing it to another table near to ours. Ended up waiting for prob another 15 minutes and they brought the dish out to us almost immediately, the dish was probably sitting in the kitchen after it was brought to the wrong table
google avatar

Eddie M.

Yelp
The food was amazing! Great service and low key atmosphere. Must try: dan dan noodles. Make sure to stir the noodles in the sauce before eating. Absolutely fantastic! Soup dumpling were delicious! Overall great experience AND they do have beer and wine!

Mike R.

Yelp
The dumplings were excellent with a variety of options. Reasonably priced for quality ingredients. Showed up before 6 so didn't have to wait for a table. The service was prompt and efficient. There's open seating and can be a bit too open for some. Kinda of gives it a upscale cafeteria ambiance.

Anthony C.

Yelp
The food was really good but the portions are ridiculously small. $32 for Chinese food usually means plenty for two with lots of leftovers. Not here. Spending that much barely getting enough for 2 people is not right.

sienna d.

Yelp
Service was not good, and food was soggy and disgusting. Not happy with things Dough Zone.

Thuc L.

Yelp
Glad DZ opened up in our area, much needed. Our family loved it. Cost is very reasonable. Definitely will return on regular basis.
