George Wendt Was a True Chicago Food Ambassador | Eater Chicago

"A famed Avondale encased-meat emporium that shuttered in 2014, remembered for its playful, cultlike status among sausage fans; a 2011 visit brought the owner and George Wendt together over a foie gras dog, they later staged a kung-fu–style video in 2014 in which Wendt humorously rebuked the owner for closing (an act that symbolized the end of traditions like lifetime free sausages for customers with the restaurant’s tattoo), and the owner regards that filmed moment as one of the establishment’s great memories." - Ashok Selvam

I was in town for business and had time to kill before I headed to the airport. A hotdog and an ocean view (nearby) sounded great! Doug’s standard chili cheese dog all the way (onions, mustard and cheese). It was very good! Great service, fun vibe and good food!

Doug's Hot Dogs is a must-visit for anyone who loves quality hot dogs! My wife couldn't stop raving about the all-beef dogs, and I absolutely loved the popper dogs – a perfect combination of flavor and spice. No matter what you choose, you really can't go wrong. The food was delicious, and the service was friendly and attentive. We'll definitely be back! Highly recommended!

GREAT Chili Dogs in good old fashioned Beach Hot Dog Stand. Excellent Bean Soup (famous for it). A true Tidewater/ Norfolk institution. Popular w locals.

I recently had the opportunity to stop by Restaurant Doug's Hot Dogs for a quick bite, and I must say it was quite an experience. Located in a small, charming spot with old town vibes, the restaurant has a 1950’s ambiance. The two servers were polite and quick! I ordered two Italian sausages along with a side of chips. While waiting for my order, I couldn't help but notice that the buns were being prepared on the counter for another patron. This raised a slight concern in my mind, wondering if they had done the same with my hot dogs. However, being preoccupied with a phone call, I didn't pay too much attention to it. The Italian sausages themselves were decent, although they seemed to be missing a certain something. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but the flavor didn't quite reach its full potential. Nevertheless, I must admit that I appreciated the fact that I received two sausages instead of one. One was plain, and the other came with sauerkraut, which added a nice tangy twist. However, I would advise the restaurant to go easy on the sauerkraut, as it tended to make the buns moist rather quickly. Alternatively, serving the kraut on the side would be a great solution. Despite these minor drawbacks, I found Restaurant Doug's Hot Dogs to be a charming place to grab a quick bite. It's conveniently located near the beach, making it an ideal stop for those in need of a satisfying meal. The quaint atmosphere, coupled with the friendly servers, adds to the overall appeal of the place. So, if you're looking for a unique hot dog experience with a touch of nostalgia, I would recommend giving this place a try.

Love me some Doug's hot dogs. I've been going there for 25+ years and finally got around to a review. I've had almost every dog they make and the soups are great too. Doug's has that small home town feel complete with old guys in the corner. The girls running the show are awesome as well.

Always enjoy Doug's naturally encased hotdog and chili. Their soups are good too and I often buy some to take home.

Google
Small, quaint diner like eatery w/a straight forward menu. The staff was friendly & polite & I was given service w/a smile. They offer 2 styles of hot dogs.. all beef or the snap dog(w/a casing that has a "snap" to it when you bite into it). I got the snap style.. one was the slaw dog w/fritos which was delicious & the Mac & cheese dog which was also delicious. The Mac & cheese was very creamy & went well w/the dog. Overall a nice little place.. highly recommend if ur looking for a personal feel w/ your meal. They have the "good" ice..lol..I had their limeade to wash it down..

Yelp
What a cute little hot dog shop!!! I'm wondering why (aside from the fact that I haven't, until recently, been eating meat) I don't stop here more often... It's a small shop, at best, with maybe three or four tables and a few seats at the grill. Today it's half full, so I slid right into a stool in front of the grill. And since I'm such a fan a sauerkraut, I ordered the Suicide Dog with sauerkraut. This!!! Is definitely NOT a good spot for a date, not even a blind one where you don't want to be on the date but you have to. The hot dog I got was oozing with messy, delicious goodness!!! Omg I'm pretty sure I'm wearing cheese on my nose. No matter, at less than $4 a hot dog, it was worth it!!!

Yelp
This is a great local spot with very good dogs! Good chili. The staff is very friendly.

Yelp

Yelp
You will not find a darn thing fancy about this hot dog dive in Ocean View, however it's been a locals favorite for decades. The location is one block off highway 60 aka as Shore Drive. You will find them beside the McDonald's. It's a bit difficult to see on the main road. There are only a few spaces in front and more off the curb. Be cautious of maneuvering in their lot it's tight. The exterior appeared freshly painted and no debris in sight. Doug's does more than hot dogs offering soups as well. For a first visit I had to order their Hormel hot dog. Matter of fact got two almost all the way, but held the onions. The young female staffer was kind and helpful. No sign of Doug anywhere. I'm guessing Doug has long passed, but his name lives on. In no time two dogs with a fountain drink was in front of me for $5.62 with tax. A tip jar is beside the register. They are open for in dining and offer curbside too! The four table and bar area was clean and dated in a good way. Checkered board tile on the floor was cool. The dogs were alright with definite snap. The buns although warmed seemed stale in my opinion. I always recommend local and would like to come back. However no rush. 3.5 rounding down.

Yelp
My husband wanted hot dogs while we were visiting the Tidewater area so we searched and found Doug's Hot Doug's in Ocean View and what a treat it was! It's a small place with a very steady business and excellent service. We each had beef hot dogs and snap dogs which were amazing. Plain, chili dogs, Chicago dogs... you can have your hot dogs anyway you like! It satisfied his craving and made me happy as well!

Yelp
I love this place. Period. If you want some good comfort food, just go here. Who hasn't eaten a ton of hot dogs in there life? With this hot dog eating experience, I think the majority of foodies are hot dog experts. I certainly am. They just have really good hot dogs here that I typically order in a three or four pack set. With a variety of options on the menu, I stick to two: the chili cheese dog and the Chicago dog. The chili cheese dog tastes the way it should for me, which is yummy. The Chicago dog is pretty much the same dog I would eat in Chicago do again, yummy. Add a few more of these dogs and my yummy meter is where it should be. The Ladies who work here are as nice as can be. Prices can't get much cheaper and the food is ready to go pretty quick. What's not to love? Well done.

Yelp
Today we stopped in spur of the moment. Over all I wasn't satisfied. The hot dog was okay at best. The grilled cheese however was not good at all. This is a place that if your passing by and need food and in a rush then stop in.. but not a place to go out of the way.
google avatar

Rebecca D.

Yelp
Quaint and out of the way. It's close to where I work so I like to pop in for an all the way hot dog. Stop by when you're in the area.

Ben P.

Yelp
for the price I was expecting fantastic hot dogs. over $30 for 6 dogs with chili and 2 dogs with slaw. thats about $4 per hot dog! the bun was good, soft and lightly toasted. the dog had good snap but was extremely dry, not juicy at all and the flavor was lacking due to no juice left inside. the chili was super small portions and very dry and bland to the point of being tasteless, needs salt and a dash of oil or something. the coleslaw was not rich and creamy but more like a dry mix. honestly I make better dogs at home with off the shelf products. don't waste your money on this tourist trap. Average dogs at best.

Yelp
I've always passed this place and I finally stopped in to see what it's about. I parked on the opposite side of the door so I looked kinda silly trying to find my way inside. The interior is really cute! I loved the booths and the little bar. The second I walked in I was greeted with a hello and a warm smile. I also noticed that the staff were on a first name basis with all the customers who walked in. The hot dogs were really good and so was their chili. I don't often have traditional, strictly meat, chili but I enjoyed it.

Yelp
Great, simple dogs. Very fast service. Perfect place near the beach for a quick lunch

Yelp
I was really excited to try this place because of the positive reviews, suggestions from family friends, and all the pictures that made the food look yummy. But my expectations were quickly met with disappointment. As soon as I walked in I noticed a peculiar odor, which should have turned me away, but I said in my head "the food here looked good, so I should go ahead and try it." , and the ladies working the counter were really friendly. I ordered a "Boston Dog" and a "Suicide Dog" to go. I noticed that the hot dogs were prepared straight on top of the back counter, instead of on top of a plate or some type of covering. This concerned me but I gave them the benifit of the doubt that the counter was sanitary and didn't make a fuss. When I got home and tried the food, the suicide dog was marginal and I couldn't even get through half of the boston dog before throwing it away. It tasted stale and I just wasn't a fan. Such a shame because the hot dogs did look awesome (which you can see in my picture.) This place did have really good customer service; however, the product is what really matters and it just didn't meet my expectations.

Yelp
I will not be returning to this establishment one of the older workers made what seemed to be a racist remark and treated me as if I was annoying her by ordering my food Customer Service was HORRIBLE The hot dogs were not good at all i ordered two and ended up trashing the second one I would encourage individuals to not waste their time or money on this sub par hot dog joint

Yelp
Doug's Hot Dogs is a classic that has been around for many many years in Ocean View. I had gone out of my way today just to get over here today. I just knew I would be happy and satisfied. Many eating establishments come Doug's Hot Dogs is a classic and this is as basic as it gets. The employee are always friendly and sweet even when you have that craving for a couple of good ol hot dogs 10 minutes before closing. The soups are simply the most delicious comfort food you can get your hands on. I also took some home to freeze it for that rainy day. I will always try to get here if I am in the area. You will love this place.

Yelp
This is a great, down to earth hang out. Good hot dogs, pork mix or beef. Sausage, etc. Yummy!

Yelp
Just swinging thigh in business and found this gem via Yelp. I wasn't disappointed at all. First, when you walk in, it is quaint and full of locals, appears a good sign. I was greeted warmly and sat myself. Now, this is where Doug's shines, the service. Absolutely impeccable. I received honest answers to my queries and was offered recommendations. Very awesome attitudes here. The food is also pretty dang good. I had the Boston dog and OV dog. They have two different types of dogs, Hormel and beef. I recommend the beef if you don't like casings. Although, with all the flavor piled on top, the dog plays a background note of flavor. If you're in the area, definitely worth coming.

Yelp
Was visiting Norfolk for New Years for a couple of days. Wanted something for lunch and the wife remembered seeing this spot as we drove up the beach. Awesome is not enough to say. Will definitely stop here to eat every time we're in Norfolk. Love the pop of the hot dog skins.

Yelp
Just recently had a "Chicago dog" to go! The place is a bit of a dive but then sometimes they have the best food! I hail from Chicago so of course I was curious to what I was going to be served. They nailed it except they didn't serve it on a poppy seed bun which is a Chicago classic! The beef hotdog was absolutely delicious and I will be back.

David C.

Yelp
Had the best experience ever. Everything I've ever eat here has been on point. The service is excellent never had a problem. If you want a hotdog you need to come here they had any kind of hotdog you could think of. The girls that work there make you want to come back.
google avatar

Yelp
There was confusion on my grubhub order, I ended up going in and they handled it so well!! Such a cute shop and AMAZING DOGS We will be back!!!
google avatar

Tonia G.

Yelp
We were the first guests of the day and the place was filthy. I had to wipe out table and high chair. The lady was nice. The hot dog was ok. It was all beef. I got the chili cheese dog. The plate that my son's dog on was dirty. I didn't even bother saying anything, because by this point the lady was giving me the stank eye. Probably because I had to clean my own area. Whatever. I won't be eating there again. It's no Nathan's and I'm shocked it's gotten such good reviews.
google avatar

Marilyn P.

Yelp
While Xmas shopping with my mother I yearned for the bean soup from that "place" in OV. It was somewhat of a miracle I remembered the location since I always forget where o park while shopping but my food memories are on point! 2 Chili dog specials with bean soup and drink which I ordered to go - short drive across the street to eat with the ocean view. Only disappointment was I didn't notice the available Yelp deal until now! Oh well guess I'll have to go back to Doug's next week
google avatar

Yelp
Doug's is the best for a variety of wonderful food. The Hormhotdogs are to die for.come get you some !
google avatar

James D.

Yelp
This place is great. It's been here since I was young. They have both HORMEL and all-beef hot dogs...the best of both worlds. It doesn't have the personality of the Original Tony's on Lafayette Blvd; but, it's close!
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
Great Hot dogs and sandwiches, great prices, and great service! Atmosphere makes you think of a 50's diner. Perfect lunch spot!
google avatar

Heather P.

Yelp
Small old fashioned feel. Only seats about 15 to 20 people. Welcomed with a friendly hello and service only got better from there. I had a Hormel hotdog with NC BBQ, coleslaw and bbq sauce. It was so yummy . My friend had the Italian sausage with chili. He said it was smaller than some but twice the taste! Also got a soup to go and our bill was less than $10! We will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
I really enjoy Doug's every now and then. It's simple food so don't go expecting alot of variety but it's a fun local spot. For the food you really don't have alot of choice but the have a good variety of toppings for their dogs. The space isn't huge but you can sit at the bar and get a good limeade. Personally my favorite part is their soups, home made and sizeable portions. If you're live in OV it's a good quick stop or if you're here visiting during the summer you can stop in then head back to the beach.
google avatar

Kaylani L.

Yelp
Pretty cool little spot for some pretty awesome hotdogs. They don't just have hotdogs either, they have sandwiches and soups as well. The limeade is really refreshing too! Will be coming back for sure!
google avatar

William I.

Yelp
Let me start this by saying I've never written a bad review in my life. That being said... My wife and I live close by Doug's and I actually grew up in OV. as a kid I remember going to them parents taking us to the beach daily during the summer. I've always wanted to try Doug's because just like the next guy I love a good dog. Today my wife and I decided to go have lunch there. As soon as we walked in the door the man sitting @ the counter and the woman behind the counter turned and looked @ us then looked @ each other with a suprised look and then turned around and completely ignored us. I definitely didn't expect the local patron to acknowledge us but the woman behind the counter didn't either. It wasn't until I stepped up to the counter and "HELLO" that she finally said anything. Her back was to us and she let out a sigh and turned around with a forced smile on her face. My wife and I immediately felt that our business was unwanted. I put all that aside and thought well I've always wanted to eat here so I'm not gonna let her poor attitude stop us. Now this is the thing. I've read a lot of reviews on this place and all are locals but I call BS on them all. Of your specialty is hotdogs than I shouldn't be able to get a better hot dog @ 7-11. They were horrible and weren't even edible. The funny thing is that Italian sausage isn't supposed to crumble when u bite into it. The service was horrible, the attitude from locals and employee alike made us feel unwanted (u Kno what I'm saying) was unacceptable and the food absolutely sucked. We will never return and I eplore my brothers and sisters to drive past this place. Total waste of time and money.
google avatar

AliciaandDominico W.

Yelp
I love Doug's. Their vegetable soup is the veggie soup that all should be modeled from :) I love that they make home made soups to go with your sandwiches or hot dogs. I've never been disappointed here. you get what you expect, it's tasty, and quick, and there is friendly staff. Oh, and did I mention how reasonably priced it is??? Doug's is a great lunch spot. My family has been going for years. I will definitely be going back.
google avatar

Christina L.

Yelp
Love the beef hot dogs. I deducted one star because I stopped by at 4:30 and they were closed. I've been dreaming about these hot dogs for a couple days and they were closed. Devastated
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
I return to Norfolk often and will hopefully be stationed there again soon...... Doug's is the first place I eat every time I get back. I always start with an OV and a Chili dog, I usually finish at 4-5 dogs and am ALWAYS satisfied and happy. I'm a Doug's fan for life.
google avatar

Marie R.

Yelp
Pretty decent. I accidently found this place while looking for another. I love "mom and pop" style businesses and would rather spend my money there than chains eateries. Anyways... I ordered their Chicago hot dog as well as their Chilli dog. Their Chicago hot dog was on point--mostly. Every part was delicious. Yum. Except it was not on a poppy seed bun. Hmmm....The Chilli dog however I did not really care for (the Chilli had a funny texture to me). So I took off a star for that. The actual hot dogs were made of beef and we're really good though aside from the Chilli. Next time I will try their soups. Price was pretty decent for lunch and service was friendly. Parking is really tight. You might have to park in another parking lot close by and walk. Overall, I'll be back.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
No idea why this place is listed under vegetarian restaurants because there is literally nothing vegetarian about this place.
google avatar

MsLydia F.

Yelp
My review is going to be short. Good Customer service HORRIBLE Product. I ordered a Chicago Hot Dog..... Nothing at all like one. Should have ordered a chili dog instead. The hot dogs are cold, they are small and I asked for a beef one, and did I mention they are cold. I could have got a better dog off the streets of New York. Horrible good. My chili was bland I used the Jalapeños that they initially gave me for my hot dog and put it in there..... I'm disappointed I really was craving something better than what I received
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
it's so funny how often this place is packed. it's only open for a few hours on certain day of the week. I hope you like hotdogs... They make fresh soups, and have chips. and lots of hot dogs. That's all there is, there isn't anymore.

Zach C.

Yelp
First time customer, would not recommend. Hot dogs were not even cooked fresh. Pulled out of some precooked warmer. Looking at the hood above the grill, it was literally spotless. SPOTLESS. Very obvious they are not cooking fresh dogs when you come in for a while now (if ever). The cheese on my bacon dog was just slopped on liquid cheese, and the bacon was burnt. Very disappointing for a place that specializes in hotdogs. There are better dogs at other specialty places or even national chain joints (5 Guys). Giving 1 star because staff wasn't rude and food was "edible". Won't ever go back, not a fan.
google avatar

Hope E.

Yelp
If you aren't a regular here, don't expect friendliness or customer service. You feel more like you're a nuisance than a customer. The hot dogs are average to a little below average- I've tried their chili dog and suicide dog, neither of which impressed me. Nothing is really "made to order" here. They have all the ingredients pre-made and sitting out on the counter. I'd rather go to Kevin's Dog House near Town Center.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
Dang good dogs, Italian Sausage was very flavorful with just the right spice. The hot dogs had the proper snap to them. The chili sauce was great texture and taste not too watery. do not be turned off by the appearance it is an old place the food is good and the service fast!!!! the one downside is the sides not many as in one chips some fries or o-rings would be great no problem just add another dog LOL.! the place is a little had to see as it is on a triangle side loy off A ave and the parking lot holds 3 cars so watch for side street parking and snag it!
google avatar

Lindsey L.

Yelp
Good little joint for a cheap and decent dogs. I ordered a cup of loaded potato soup ($2.95) and a chili cheese hormel dog ($2.95) the chili wasn't very good. It tasted like mashed up old hamburger meat and very bland. The weinnie was cold also. I still ate all of it though it was worth the price. The soup was really really good! And hot (temperature) needed some salt and pepper but it was pretty good. Last but not least they give you a 10% discount for checking in via Facebook, Yelp or Foursquare. So that's awesome. Very friendly customer service and a nice clean establishment. 1star for the soup 1star for the check in discount 1star for friendly service Added another star due to such a great experience today. Had the veggie beef soup and it was AMAZING
google avatar

Liya M.

Yelp
Met up at this lil local spot with my brother and 2 year old niece. Cute, retro inside. Not the cleanest, but I have seen worse. We sat at the tables, but they also have bar seating. It was Saturday lunchtime so business was picking up, two ladies were working and doing their best to keep up. My brother ordered several hot dogs with different toppings, but the NC style pulled pork was the favorite. I had one also. Very yummy, I must say! My niece had chicken noodle soup. It was super hot. But the lady told us that and gave us the cup portion in a bowl with some ice to cool it down.... very helpful. Plenty of crackers on the side. But what toddler is gonna eat soup when there are saltines to crunch on?! :) The chili was good and the limeade was flavorful. We also got the tuna sandwich to go for my sister in law which she enjoyed. Overall a simple, cheap and tasty lunch spot!
google avatar

Hannah W.

Yelp
This is not a fancy place. It's tiny, unprepossessing, and doesn't have much parking. They're only open in the afternoon. The only things I remember seeing on the menu were homemade soup and hot dogs. However...all that aside, they're pretty great hotdogs, at a good price. And the service is very friendly.
google avatar

Bobby D.

Yelp
Can't beat the good food and great customer service. I had to get three bacon cheese dogs.... " all beef "...
google avatar

Anna N.

Yelp
Doug's hot dogs is my home away from home. My go-to whenever I want to feel full and satisfied. I've been going to Doug's since I was about 8 years old. In these past 10 years, the great service, delicious food and homie atmosphere have stayed constant. I can't say I have had everything on the menu because the beef all the way hot dog (mustard, onions, chili) is to die for. I can't resist getting it every time I go--which is at least once a week. Also, the soups are all delicious. This place also has great service. I have bonded with the staff over the years and they know just about everything going on in many of the customers lives. One of the best places in Norfolk!
google avatar

Norman K.

Yelp
Very nice counter help serving us but the hot dog that is singular not plural are not worth the 2. 99 and the onions were very dry not fresh at all.
google avatar

Fred B.

Yelp
Man, even though it had been YEARS since I grabbed a killer dog at Doug's, I had the day off and felt nostalgic so I treated myself. Nice to see they still do it OH SO RIGHT!! It'w what I want from my hot dog place. Boiled Skin-on franks, with that special homemade chilli that is oh so just right! Just typing this review makes me want to head back to that little island of deliciousness.... no, really, I literally mean an island. They are on a little traffic triangle of land at the Granby St end of Ocean View Shopping center and have been since before I got my first Job near there in the 1980's... LOVE ME SOME DOUG'S HOT DOGS!!!! So, if you want a great, traditional hot dog, all the way (which means Chilli, mustard & onions for all you that don;t know), get down there today.. right now.. GO!!!
google avatar

Misty R.

Yelp
I love hotdogs. They are my favorite food, so it is really hard for me to say a hotdog was bad. Though I have to say these were. My two daughters and I went and we each got one hot dog. They got just plain hotdogs with nothing on it. They didn't finish them. They said they were gross. I got a chili dog. I'm not sure what kind of chili it was but it looked like dog food. It was pretty gross. The hot dog itself was just ok. I also got a side of coleslaw. That was so bad I spit it out. It tasted like cabbage with a handful of sugar sprinkled on top. There were a lot of people there and they seemed to be enjoying there food it just wasn't for me.
google avatar

Dick R.

Yelp
Great place for a fast lunch with the OV locals. The staff adds a great local attitude to the place. Just love Carl and Misty. OV all the way.
