Life Alive Opens Harvard Square Location in Collaboration With Down Under Yoga - Eater Boston

"Life Alive has been serving vegetarian food and juices in colorful, chill settings around Greater Boston for the last 18 years. The latest addition to the growing local chain opened in Harvard Square on March 1, 2022, converting the old Pizzeria Uno space into an unrecognizably cheerful spot offering Life Alive’s usual menu — with a side of yoga and meditation. This is the first of two planned collaborations with another slated to open in May in Boston’s South End." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

After living in Cambridge for over a year, I was walking around Harvard Square looking for some place new to get me back into working out. I had tried other places but Down Under really stuck with me. The teachers here are one of a kind. Aside from the fact that they are some of the most knowledgable yoga instructors I have ever come across, they are also incredibly kind and thoughtful. They truly do care about you and will make a connection with you. I adore coming to this studio and have not been able to stop coming since I first walked in. They also have a good number of locations so if I am in a different part of town I can still check out another studio to get some yoga in. It was a great place for a beginner like me and has been great for me as I have gotten more experienced. Also the fact that it has a great cafe in the same building adds to the healthy ambiance. Getting a smoothie after doing some yoga makes me feel so good (even when I go and ruin that later in the day :)

From the moment you step inside, you're greeted with a wave of warmth from the team—it truly feels like a second home. The lower level studio space feels like a vibrant, energizing den. The mood lighting is EVERYTHING—soft, inviting, and somehow both calming and invigorating at the same time. It's the perfect environment to sink into your practice or even stay a while after class to soak up the serene yet productive energy. The space is beautiful and well thought-out, and the community vibe is truly unmatched. It'll be hard for me to stay away!

I've been loving taking classes at the Harvard location of Down Under Yoga - the teachers are engaging and attentive, and it's a great way to unwind on my way home from work! Could not recommend this studio enough.

I love visiting Down Under’s Harvard studio. The classes are challenging and restorative, and the space is great. The variety of classes and instructors at this location make it easy to mix it up and practice with new faces.

I am from out of town. I am 50 yrs old and very fit. I typically do yoga 6 days a week. I was by far the oldest person in my class. It was the 1030 vinyasa on Fridays. The young gentleman who taught the class was judgey and critical of many of us. While doing a questionable balance of our tailbone on a block, I modified and adjusted my legs to protect my back. He scolded me in front of the whole class. He told me the class is not about me feeling good but it was instead about the group experience. He made me feel angry and disappointed instead of feeling peace and connection. I wholeheartedly disagree with this instructors approach to yoga. If I subscribed to that thinking, I would have been injured long ago and likely no longer practicing yoga. I really hope that someone can speak to this gentleman and explain that everyone’s bodies are different from each other and that it is extremely important to listen to your body so you do not get injured. When you do a class of course you should be respectful of the group but you should be permitted to modify to taylor your workout to your individual limitations. I will not be attending this instructors class in the future. I sincerely hope he does not cause anyone to hurt themselves. His instruction was not worth the risk of injury. I am in great shape because I listen to my body. Not because I follow every teachers instruction to the T.

I visited the studio this past Sunday for the Inferno Hot Pilates and had a great time. The studios were spacious and the staff answered all of my questions promptly. I would definitely return for another class.

Yelp
I was really excited to check out Down Under School of Yoga for a Heated Flow class, especially after trying Flow (Infrared Heat) at Hotbox in Southie. When you arrive, note that the yoga studio is located in the same building as Life Alive, a health restaurant. Personal preference, I enjoyed the class at Hotbox much more. This class seemed to be a bit more advanced, with a focus on breathing and technique. Most people knew the names of the poses offhand and didn't look up at the instructor as much. The room itself was a bit cramped and I accidentally touched the feet of the person behind and beside me. That being said, I enjoyed the experience of hot yoga and left feeling refreshed. Be sure to bring your own yoga mat, as they require you to rent them otherwise (seems odd to me, as the classes are already quite expensive and the rental mats were of low quality). I'd recommend for those with more yoga experience, but I don't think I would personally return.

Yelp
Wow, their yoga class was so intense! Make sure you read the class description, so you know what you're getting yourself into. Here are a couple of things to be aware of: The facility is clean and is downstairs of Live Alive, but the space is small. It can get packed pretty easily with people leaving and coming in for class. There's not a lot of space to store your stuff. They have a shower facility, but make sure to ask the receptionist from Down Under, not Live Alive employees, for the code because Live Alive wouldn't have any idea.

Yelp
Down Under in Harvard Square is a beautiful space with 2 modern studios. While there is a wide variety of classes to choose from, I personally love the hot yoga flows and Pilates offered here. Make sure to grab a smoothie from Life Alive after class ;)
