Life Alive Opens Harvard Square Location in Collaboration With Down Under Yoga | Eater Boston

"Founded in 2004, Down Under School of Yoga has grown from friends teaching in a parish hall into a multi-location school offering yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda programming, and it’s partnering with Life Alive to bring classes and wellness programming into the Harvard Square collaborative (with another location planned for the South End). The school faced public criticism over restrictive non-compete and non-disparagement clauses, prompting director Justine Wiltshire Cohen to apologize and revise contracts; since then Down Under says it did away with the non-compete, created a teacher leadership council, invited faculty to write their own contracts, and now treats teachers as employees with access to healthcare, sick days, parental leave, retirement, seasonal meetings, and a stated commitment to retain all 80 teachers and 15 managers during the pandemic." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

I love being a part of the Down Under community. Coming to this studio has been so grounding for me the past year. There is a certain glow to the studio which holds us warmly in practice. I've been taking classes with the teacher Bendex the past few months, and I have to say his teaching style is awesome! Simple, reliable and challenging. I also find the studio atmosphere to be like a big wonderful collaboration - between managers, work study, teachers and students - we all work together to maintain a certain peaceful environment which definitely has an immensely positive impact on the community. Again, I am so grateful for Down Under and how I've changed since I started going there.

Down Under Yoga in Newton is an absolute gem and the sense of community here is palpable – everyone, from the staff to the students, radiates warmth and kindness. From the moment you step into the studio, you're greeted with a cozy atmosphere. Shawna’s classes are truly something else – they’re always packed for a reason! Her energy, guidance, and ability to create a transformative experience on the mat are unparalleled. One of the most unique aspects of this studio is the breadth of offerings. From Hot Power Flow to deeply restorative practices, there's something for everyone. I was especially amazed to find Iyengar Ropes classes here – a rare class that showcases the studio’s commitment to offering diverse, high-quality yoga experiences. If you’re looking for a studio that combines top-notch instruction with a genuine sense of community, this is the place to be.

I always look forward to practicing at the Newton location! Sophia and Anna are such welcoming faces at the front desk, and they do such an amazing job keeping the space clean and calming. I love the variety of classes offered, but I've especially been enjoying Dina's pilates and flow sequences recently :)

I had an uncomfortable experience in an Iyengar class with Michael G. i was new to his class and when I asked a question, he responded in a condescending manner that made me feel unwelcome and judged. This treatment was completely unexpected, as I've had positive experiences with all the other instructors at this studio. The interaction was so unpleasant that it affected me well beyond the class itself—it ruined my day and continues to upset me when I think about it. I hope this was an isolated incident.

I have been coming to the Flow Foundations class with Dina at Down Under for several years now- I absolutely love this class! The studio is mellow, accepting, welcoming of students at all levels, and just right for me. Thank you, Down Under and Dina, for your grounded, deeply knowledgeable, all-abilities friendly approach to yoga!

I cannot recommend Down Under Yoga at Newton enough! Anna and Sophia are incredibly friendly and welcoming, and always making sure you find a beautiful, peaceful, and impeccably clean space. The instructors are exceptional. They are not only skilled but also genuinely care about giving you the best experience. Michael and Lyn class are so challenging and always left me with a feeling of accomplishment and calm.

Pros: plenty of locations and a wide variety of classes including Pilates, yoga, hot yoga and more. The receptionists are amazing. The Pilates instructors are also amazing. Cons: The men are mostly in their 50s and moan throughout each class. Super weird, very distracting, and I wish the teachers focused on this as much as they focus on texting before class starts (which doesn’t impact anyone). They pack out classes, making it super uncomfortable and unable to even perform. You pay a monthly membership fee so it doesn’t make sense that they allow so many people in such a small space. Some yoga teachers never stop talking, making it hard to focus.

I love Down Under Yoga, and the Newton location is truly something special. As the first location of DUY, the sense of community and rigor of the teachers and classes is like no other! Love this place!!!
