Where To Eat Down The Shore: Atlantic City To Cape May - New York - The Infatuation

"There are two things you need to know about Downbeach Deli. One is that you don’t want to actually go to the deli there—Dino’s three blocks south is a far superior spot for hoagies and lunchmeat. But the second is that they have one of the best and cheapest breakfasts in Margate. You can get a full breakfast with an omelet, toast, and hashbrowns, or french toast made with carrot cake or cinnamon babka, for under $10. Either way, you’ll leave with enough change in your pocket to buy an extra six-pack to bring to the beach." - Sydney Mcelwee, Candis Mclean, Tonya Russell

Google
99 percent of our experiences here have been amazing. We have only had one bad experience due to a waitress who was really rude, but we have to give it the benefit of the doubt because every other time we’ve eaten there everyone has been really kind. So we will write that off as a one off where maybe someone was having a bad day. The food is great , the location is awesome. Very spacious. Comfortable seating. Great spot for breakfast. The give complimentary pickles for lunch and they are amazing

Google
Picked up an order for NIV, amongst the order was a Chicken Caesar Wrap. After eating the one half, I bit into the second half and felt a crunch but… METAL and it was stabbing into my cheek. After spitting it out, see photos of what is probably a wire bristle. Upon contacting Downbeach Deli, a manager (William) asked to have the photos sent to him via text message. After texting the number that was given and after following up, no response. I want to remind Downbeach Deli the severity of this flop, had I swallowed this foreign object, this would’ve been a horrible medical emergency, I can’t imagine why they’re not taking this as serious as they should be. Not posting this a deliberate scorn, I contacted them as an FYI so they could correct it, not to complain.

Google
Small portion, tasteless sandwich, servers were sharp tongued, seating was cramped. Will not return or recommend family or friends. And not to mention it was expensive $14 for a half a corned beef no larger than the palm of my hand.

Google
We go to Downbeach Deli about 2 times a month for breakfast/lunch on the weekend. Super solid diner with a variety of options. LOVE their fries. Service is fast and Kathy is lovely!

Google
I always LOVE breakfasts here with my family and friends that have a place in Margate. Portions are large, bagels are fresh I always leave happy 👍🏻

Google
Downbeach and Casels are the lifeblood of Margate. Great food I think any of their burgers rate with anywhere else local... others in our party enjoyed their salads their omlettes and sandwiches.

Terri Crafton

Google
Very good food! I love the corned beef specials and pickle plate. The atmosphere was very welcoming.

Google
Really cool spot. Lots of different things you wouldn't be able to try elsewhere. The waiters and waitresses are very kind, and the location is a cool spot as well. I'd recommend the egg cream as a drink on the side with anything

Yelp
I think the majority of low reviews are coming from visitors who can't appreciate this classic margate staple. It isn't trendy or overly friendly. You don't come here to snap Instagram pics. It's a deli offering the classic staples. Menu and interior haven't been updated in at least 20 years. Deal with it or eat elsewhere. Sorry not sorry! I absolutely LOVE coming to downbeach when I'm visiting home. Best Rueben on the island and of course I enjoy the classic breakfast staples on offer. But I never leave without grabbing some goodies from the bakery. The Jewish apple cake is probably my favorite in the world. It's always super moist and very sweet. I also love the rugelach and hamantaschen! If Jewish deli is what you want, you won't leave disappointed. The price tag is hearty but the portions more or less fit the bill. The servers are efficient and pleasant enough but keep your expectations in check. And unlike most Margate eateries, DD has parking!

Yelp
Good place for breakfast or lunch they also have baked goods and a nice deli counter also specialty items that are hard to find.

Yelp
It's been awhile since I've been to a restaurant that was so brazen in displaying how much they cut corners. Received bacon that is clearly the pre-cooked kind that someone just microwaved. And challah French toast thinner than a standard slice of sandwich bread, it was nearly shaved in in some parts. $6.50 for a ~2oz cup of what appeared to be several days old fruit salad. How this place sustains any kind of business from anything beyond maybe the small flicker of nostalgia the locals have for it is beyond me. Overpriced embarrassing food in a dirty atmosphere.

Barbara K.

Yelp
I ordered the yogurt parfait, which I often order at other restaurants and cafes. This one was terrible. It had watery tasteless yogurt and fruit that belongs in a fruit cocktail not mixed with yogurt and granola!

Alex

Yelp
I went here just for some food and we had a nice pickle tray. Very tasty. Service was good. Just took a while to get our food. Overall good restaurant cookies were amazing.

Yelp
Downbeach Deli serves up the best breakfast and lunch with a Jewish twist. Solid pastrami on rye, corned beef with Cole slaw and Russian dressing, knishes were on point and our spry server kept the coffee flowing.

Stefany J.

Yelp
Very prompt friendly service. They seated our party of 10 easily. Everyone loved the food. But I did notice that the sandwiches are smaller than they used to be

Yelp
Classic right out of the 50's Underdone way better then snooty , fresh and familiar as a knish which they have an enormous choice of and way more insides & toppings! Menu tells it all!
google avatar

Yelp
Margate delivery always perfect. Hands down the best Cold Cuts in the entire area. Don't waste money at any other Deli. I'm addicted to the Turkey Club Sandwich. Always Great! Extremely fast delivery also.

Yelp
This place has been here forever. Think old school Jewish deli dinner... so u can always get a side of apple sauce or latke on the menu too. It's ok, the old school feel is cool but the corn beef sandwich is just ok and will hit the spot, but you won't be craving it when you leave. Maybe u need some chicken matzo ball soup - then come for a pick me up! So if u are here on the weekends and need a brunch spot - plus everything else is full ... u probably be able to get a spot here.

Yelp
Two years ago I face this place 4 stars, today 2! Hubby had eye surgery decided, he's acting like a baby better get food I know he likes... lol Food is good here but the staff is so damn u friendly. I normally don't require any extra talking as long as you drive me. The counter lady cut be off before I could finish my order! WTH So I ordered my hubby & son's food, I'll pick up something else where..

Yelp
Come on Downbeach get it together already... Stopped for lunch, Bagel, and Lox. Give me a break! Prices have gone up which is understandable considering the times we live in. Bagel and Lox price is now about $17 Let's get to the point. The bagel was delicious, Tomato, onion fine. The service was always seemed to be excellent with servers who have been in the business long enough to make you feel like you're in an NJ Diner. LOX? No exaggeration, 3 VERY SMALL NARROW THIN slices of Lox. Not even enough to cover a side of the bagel. Disgraceful really. Come on Downbeach get yourselves together, we are rooting for you! I know I should have taken a pix...

Yelp
Oh God. This is a must place for any Jersey Shore vacation. Full of history. A real treat if you crave Jewish food and are too lazy to make it yourself. ''Tis is not a vegetarian place! Carnivores and carbs lovers - welcome! Portions are huge so come hungry and bring friends. Really nice waiters. What to order? If you're here for breakfast, ask for matzo brei. For lunches and brunches - go with pastrami and chopped liver sandwiches. Craving something more traditional? Matzo soup and latkes. And always, always ask for more pickled goodies!

Jacqui D.

Yelp
I have been going there for years but the food is mediocre at best of late. The potatoes are often not cooked enough and the bread for the sandwiches is often not fresh. Our last take out of burgers was a never again. All the sandwiches were extremely greasy and the fries undercooked.

Yelp
Just left and both my daughter and I got sick immediately Def food poisoning ! Fierce vomiting and diarrhea. I had a bagel with lox tomato and cream cheese and she has a bagel with whitefish salad tomato and provolone and matzah ball soup. We both had pickles from the pickle tray. I called to speak with a manager to let them know and was brushed off with them saying they've been serving those items all day and there's a virus going around. I'm a health educator and this is food poisoning. Told her that and that she needs to do a super clean of kitchen and check for contamination and the source. This was one of our favorite places now we will never go again. What a shame. Just take ownership and responsibility. Say sorry and that you'll do everything you can to check for the source. Sad!!!

Eileen W.

Yelp
I've been coming to the shore for decades and have eaten here less than a half dozen times. This time I ordered the half roasted chicken and it must have been done or heated in a fryer, not a roaster. The skin was crispy but so dried out I couldn't chew it. The wing bones were cooked to a crisp. My husband had the pricey corned beef and cabbage which he described as just OK. They seated us outside the kitchen/ prep area. Since there were plenty of open tables I asked to be moved. We're not hurrying back.

Rachael H.

Yelp
I didn't know what to expect for it being my first time here but I got the veggie pocket and it was just alright. I asked to have them add a little turkey in it which they did a great portion with, but i was disappointed when I saw there was no sprouts . I also feel like it is way overly priced. 16 dollars just seems way too much for a sandwich. May try them again for breakfast.

Yelp
Great location in Margate, super service, great Jewish deli, all in a very open and airy environment in which to grab a really good meal to feed your soul. They even let our pup in with us and accommodated our dietary requests without batting an eye! Our waitress GINA has been our server the last couple of times and she is sooo knowledgeable of the menu and super friendly!!! After the meal, we made our way over to the deli counter and got some homemade (very low sodium) rotisserie sliced turkey breast to go along with a bit of house made sliced roast beef. Awesome quality and taste! Buddy was great and he helped me at the deli counter - he answered all of my sodium questions with ease and was happy to do it! Summer meal times are quite busy, if there is a wait - it is WELL worth it!

Nancy C.

Yelp
This legendary restaurant still serves a great breakfast! Service , food , and decor is always great. Prices are fair , portions are large. Very busy during lunch hours. Expect a wait during Summer time.
google avatar

Yelp
One star is for delicious pickles. The Kosher deli is a joke. We had pastrami and salami sandwiches. The small and regular are the same size served on a very poor quality rye bread, probably the bagged type, not even toasted. That's it for 14.95 sandwich? This was our first visit, not returning.
google avatar

Allie R.

Yelp
the chocolate babka french toast was something i never knew i needed. highly recommend!!

Larry F.

Yelp
For some silly reason, I used to go to a joint in Ventnor whose owners took off like thieves in the night. I began going to Downbeach and find the food and service to be excellent. Early morning breakfast specials and always fresh, not frozen bagels leftover from previous days. I can't wait for the shoobies to go home, so I can enjoy it without the crowds! Highly recommended!
google avatar

Larry B.

Yelp
Hit or miss. Knishes are very good. Blintzes are very good. Twice I've had the pastrami and while it's not the best it's been decent. The other day the pastrami, however was tasteless. The corned beef was horrible and tough. Maybe I'm a NYC deli snob but this was just plain terrible. The sandwiches aren't presented very well either. They obviously do not make their own meat. Very disappointed.
google avatar

Harvey W.

Yelp
The matzo ball soup here is delicious, and so are the deli sandwiches. All of their breakfast dishes are solid. The service is always fast and Friendly I would definitely recommend if you are in Margate and looking for something different for lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
The Downbeach Deli is a great find !!! We initially went to try their corned beef specials .. and we were hooked ! Their Matzo soup is awesome .. their Chicken Schnitzel was so tasty .. everything that we have tried is genuinely good home style cooking ! The wait staff is attentive and very pleasant !!! The atmosphere is bright and clean ! So glad that we found this gem !!!

Yelp
They add 3.99% to you bill for using a credit card without letting you know ahead of time. The customer should know ahead of time so they can decide if they want to use cash or pay the 3,99% To use a credit card. Very deceptive.

Kenneth B.

Yelp
My family and I have been dining at Downbeach for decades. Their "Jewish Soul Food" is amazing, but I love "breakfast for dinner." On my latest visit, I had their delicious Pizza Omelette.

S S.

Yelp
Was extremely disappointed. Meat on all the sandwiches very skimpy. On the one brisket sandwich it was one layer and it didn't even cover the bread. Hopefully it was simply a staff mistake, but we won't be back.

Ellen F.

Yelp
Went in to buy normal smoked fish Sunday brunch stuff. Nova was $48 a lb. Whitefish salad was $6/ 1/4 lb. Prices are going up, I get it, but at Hot Bagels across the street they were charging $32/lb for Nova. To add insult to injury they added a 4% charge for using a credit card. Hot bagels doesn't. After decades of coming here today was my last. Price gouging is unacceptable.

Yelp
Had lunch at Downbeach Deli on Saturday. It was the best corn beef special I've had in years. The service was excellent & the apple cake was awesome. Everything was so delicious I dreamed about it Sunday night. My husband had to go get me a sandwich, Manhattan clam chowder & apple cake on Monday. We will definitely be visiting there again.

Robert S.

Yelp
This place has really gone downhill. The corned beef used to be amazing and now it tastes like the rubber. I just got a sandwich and told them that it was inedible. They told me all the corn beef is the same. That was the wrong answer. Maybe it was was bad corn beef and the rest of it is good but they wouldn't even entertain the idea. From now on I will only go to water dog across the street

Yelp
Great Find for a deli... stopped in town for the chocolate store .... went to lunch here first time visit. Wide selection of deli items (not elsewhere found as of yet). Hockey no soup was great, warm pastrami on Jewish rye bread was Excellent! Potatoe pancakes were ok. Service was friendly and efficient. Looking forward to returning.
google avatar

Diane B.

Yelp
Sad excuse for a deli! Rye bread sliced so thin, butter caused it to tear. Ordered egg salad sandwich to go....someone forgot to add mayo, celery, it ended up being chopped egg on rye. Requested well done bacon on sand which...that ended up being all the bits that broke off during the day. Guess that's how it gets to be well done! Not a slice anywhere. Last visit, promise. Would rather not eat.
google avatar

Nigel J.

Yelp
I'll never come back. Went over for a pastrami sandwich and left pretty disappointed. I asked for the large a normal sized sandwich and didn't even have cheese on it.... come on..... it was literally bread and meat that's it. The real sham is the sandwich was $12.75 alone (Yup no chips fried or drink)...... Trash. Just drive by.

Cathy G.

Yelp
I was completely underwhelmed by this place. I felt that, the servers really didn't want to be there, but I like to give places(especially local places) a second chance because everyone's allowed a bad day, but, this was our second time back and the service was still poor. And, our breakfast was just average, so. ...Would not return.
google avatar

Aaron S.

Yelp
Food is decent but the staff is awful. Just get your food to go. If I offended anyone, sorry?

Yelp
This used to be my favorite deli in the area, other then the fact they still falsely claim to have fresh squeezed lemonade on their menu and the waitresses back up this false claim, when in fact, the lemonade is Minute Maid, the worse, most chemically poisonous lemonade anyone can offer! But each time I went it and asked if they have fresh squeezed lemonade that is listed on the menu, the waitresses always claim it is, but then I call them on it, and say "it's not really fresh squeezed, is it? And they cop to the truth and say, "No it's not." I wonder if they ever really had fresh squeezed. And why if they got a new menu, is it still listed on there? Well the last time I went in, took the cake! First off, the waitress gave me the lemonade made the false claim once again, and I called her on it once again. My mom ordered the corned beef sandwich, as usual. What she got was cheap non-Kosher Boarshead this time! Yuck! A Jewish deli that suddenly does not server kosher corned beef! What's up with that! I went up to the deli counter and asked them why. They told me they only serve Kosher Hebrew National, which was obviously not the truth. So I went back to the waitress and told her what they said, asked her what was going on. She admitted she did not serve us Hebrew National, she admitted she served a non-kosher corned beef to our table. I asked her why why the deli counter falsely claimed they only serve Hebrew National corned beef . She said she was shocked that we could even tell the difference! Imagine that! Just like customer's won't be able to tell the difference between fresh squeezed lemonade and Minute Maid! Whose brainy idea thought that??? A real rocket scientist! NOT! She said the customer has to ask for kosher or they don't get kosher. I said since when? We never had to ask before! On top of that, the rye bread was different and not very good. This place is going downhill quickly! The owners better take a serious look at their deli, cause it is not looking good.

Yelp
We look forward to coming here whenever we're back in town. We were here last in June but I must say it feels a little different. A little fresher and brighter. Now to the food. My corned beef omelette was great. The potatoes were tasty, hot and crisp. I also got the gluten free bread, which I was happy to see on the menu. My fiancé ordered a salami and cheese omelette which was huge. She had never ordered it before so we weren't sure but it was very tasty. The coffee was replenished and the waitress was attentive. Best wishes to the new owner on continued success.

Yelp
Excellent service employees are very polite and very helpful. The pancakes waffle Sunnyside up eggs are very tasty. It's a short walk from where I live. Prices are very good.
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
Needed cheese for eggplant parm. I asked for a pound, deli guy went way over a pound and didn't give me the option of not taking the extra. At checkout they wouldn't take my credit card, said there was a $10 minimum. I looked and nothing was posted announcing this policy. I walked 2 miles so I wasn't going to walk out without my purchase but I can assure you I will never be going back.
google avatar

Dana H.

Yelp
This is my go to place when I want matzoh ball soup or just chicken soup! Although they have an extensive menu with everything you can think of! The pickled assorted appetizer they give you is wonderful! This is a staple in Margate! They have good portions and everything is very tasty!
google avatar

Caroline G.

Yelp
This place is a great spot to grab breakfast or lunch from the beach. Classic menu items that are high quality. The breakfast potatoes are also some of the best I ever had!!
google avatar

Yelp
Simply the BEST!!!! Best food, best service, best owners!! Fair pricing, large seating area, close to the beach!
google avatar

Yelp
Terrible service, terrible counter staff, amazing knishes. Very overpriced and always crowded. There are better places in the area!

Andrew R.

Yelp
Yum yum yum. My home state food never lets me down. Corned beef and eggs were delicious. The Reuben was perfect. Great bagels. Can't wait to go back.

Marc M.

Yelp
Absolutely worst experience ever! Closes at 730 we walked in at 640pm. Soup came out cold. Waited 30 more minutes for our dinner which came out wrong. All 4 people working there were cleaning up while we were sitting there waiting. Check was wrong. No apology whatsoever they just wanted to close up. Been to this place many times. Food is good! Attitude and ambience not so much. Overpriced and overrated!!!!!

Sammy J.

Yelp
I have eaten there a few times. The food is okay. My complaint is my friends get lunch there and always get me a liver knish. 50 % of the time I get either a potato knish or a Kasha knish sent back. How difficult is it to send the correct knish. Today they sent a half a knish that had raisins and kasha. So my friend who got me the knish took it back and showed them the 1/2 of knish. They said nothing. Just said they were busy. They were not busy when she bought it or when they returned it. No explanation why they gave her a half of knish. No apology or we won't charge you....nothing. It takes very little to be nice and make up for a mistake. Apparently The Down Beach Deli has not learned that. Shame on you. No more knishes for me

Yelp
Went to breakfast with a group of 10 and it was an overall terrible experience. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because the food was good. When we got there, our waitress asked if we wanted separate checks or not and we said yes. Everything after that went downhill. It took 40 minutes to get our coffee so we were obviously a bit frustrated, we then asked her where the coffee was because we saw everyone else that was seated after us got their coffee first. We asked again for the coffee and our waitress replied with "you realize you didn't even get your food yet, right" insinuating that she could do something to our food. Whether she was joking or not, you should never say that. She finally came with the coffee and there was lipstick on one of the mugs. Then we ordered our food and the waitress said to one of us "do you want a bagel or toast, you're better off getting toast." Basically making the decision for her. Another 30 minutes go by and our food still wasn't brought out to us. She brought us our bagels prior to getting our meals, since it was already taking so long. But the bagels should have been served with the meals. When the food was finally ready, it came out separate, with half of us waiting while some of us were already finished. The waitress made sly remarks every time she came back to the table and treated us like we were children. In a sarcastic tone she said "does anyone want coffee or water, I'm just trying to appease you guys. You didn't come here to stare at me." We brought all of this up to the owner while we were at check out and he justified her behavior by saying that we asked for separate checks and that she was under a lot of pressure. He told us that she mentioned to him that we were being aggressive when we asked for the coffee. He also added that she has been working at the restaurant for a long time. Did not seem apologetic or remorseful whatsoever. We were honestly shocked with the whole experience. He said "he'll talk to her" but brushed it to the side. Take your time and money elsewhere.

Yelp
Jewish deli like menu with a large variety. Has takeout as well as sit down service. we were traveling with our two dogs and it was a hot day but they have a few tables outside under a large awning so we had shade and a nice breeze to keep us comfortable. The server was great, they have a large menu so hard to decide. My husband had matzoh ball soup and a pastrami sandwich. He loved both and I did try the pastrami which was delicious, generous on the sandwich and nice and lean. My turkey burger was good. The best part was how nice they were to our dogs, pouring a fresh bowl of cold water for them and saying how good they are (which they were).
