An English-style steakhouse tucked in a downtown lane, known for prime Black Angus and a deep whiskey list. Spotlighted by the Macon Telegraph for its enduring appeal and cigar lounge.

My brother and I both ordered the elk and it was very good. They have a great whiskey and wine selection and there is good separation between the smoking and nonsmoking sections of the restaurant. The complimentary valet parking wad also great -i drive a manual transmission and they had no issue with it. My seat was exactly where I had it also, which is nice.

We took my Dad here for his birthday and had a great experience. The atmosphere is speak easy type vibe, the old fashioned was delicious, and our filets were cooked to perfection. They have amazing daily specials. Chase was our server and he was the absolute best - service was top notch. Highly recommend

**ROACHES** I recently visited Downtown Grill a high-end establishment with a reputation for fine dining, expecting an exceptional culinary experience. Unfortunately, what should have been a memorable evening for the right reasons was overshadowed by serious cleanliness and maintenance issues. From the moment we walked in, there was an unmistakable odor of mildew—like damp carpet left too long without proper care. It’s not the kind of scent you expect in a luxury dining space, and it immediately set a concerning tone for the evening. The most disturbing moment came when a roach casually walked across our table during the meal. For a restaurant of this caliber, that’s not just disappointing—it’s absolutely unacceptable. Cleanliness and hygiene are non-negotiable in any dining setting, let alone one charging premium prices. Even more frustrating: the restaurant made no effort to address or compensate for the incident. No apology beyond a vague expression of surprise, no adjustment to the bill, and not even a token gesture of concern. It left us feeling not only uncomfortable, but disregarded. Given the visible conditions in the dining area, I can't imagine how dirty and disgusting the kitchen must be. If roaches are bold enough to crawl on tables in front of guests, it raises serious questions about what’s going on behind closed doors. This restaurant may carry the look and price tag of fine dining, but it fails where it matters most. Until they seriously address hygiene, maintenance, and customer care, I cannot recommend dining here.

Wish we could give more than 5 stars! The food was exceptional. The chef adds a Cajun touch to his specials and everything we tried was fantastic. Our waitress, Zoey, was amazing. She knew the menu from front to back and her recommendations were spot on! Highly recommend.

Google
I took my husband here for his 64 birthday celebration. Oh my goodness the food was absolutely superb. Our waitress was excellent. You gotta try the waffles and shrimp appetizer. I’m just dreaming of going back just for that. Kudos to the chef if I could give it six stars I would.

Google
The place is NOT easy to find when using gps.... you have to go down an alley (note the "Lane" in the address). We had a large party and our server was amazing!! [I think her name was Sarah]. The appetizers were on point.... the entrees were good (it is a challenge getting everything perfect for a large party). Worth a try. [P.S. they do have valet... our guy looked "suspect" until we saw his shirt).

Google
My wife and I went there for our 30th anniversary. The food was awesome, but they had to replace my meal for an over cooked steak. Button mushrooms are awesome, and don't skip the crab cakes! The service was the very best I have experience in quite a while. Good value for price quality.

Really wonderful evening. The waitress was so nice and attentive, the food was amazing, and the atmosphere/vibes were great!

Yelp
I made a special trip to Macon just for the French onion soup! But seriously, I had a quick business trip and couldn't wait to visit Downtown Grill for the second time. My first experience was fantastic, and this time was just as perfect. The entire staff is friendly and attentive, clearing plates and refilling water as they pass by--truly exemplary service! Jordan was fabulous, striking the perfect balance between being attentive and allowing me to enjoy my meal. I arrived an hour before closing, but that didn't affect the experience at all. The French onion soup was just as amazing as I remembered--flavorful, slightly sweet, and loaded with onions and cheese. This time, I decided to try the chicken marsala for my entrée. The chicken was grilled to perfection with a lovely char, and the sauce was delicious; my only regret is that I didn't ask for extra sauce. The mashed potatoes and green beans were also bursting with flavor. Overall, another five-star experience!

Yelp
Excellent food and ambience. One of the best high-end quality restaurants in Macon downtown area. Great service and friendly staff. Small menu and limited choice so best to look at the menu and reserve the place. Valet Parking in the covered area next to the restaurant - it's free. Charges are covered by the restaurant Vs parking in the street. A comfortable, cozy place with a very good quality & delectable food items.

Yelp
hole in the wall (from the outside), but inside stouts old school steakhouse vibe...we sat at the bar which allows for cigar smoking..I legitimately would go back just for the fried artichokes. I think this is a must try for the vibe. There is a speak easy upstairs (reservations required I believe) which is extremely small spaced but very NYC in ambiance which was very cool.

Yelp
This was my best friends choice of destination for her husband's & my joint birthday dinner. The ambiance is of an old speak easy. As you enter, the bar is immediately in front that offers cigars with top shelf drinks. The owner (Tracy, I think?) was the bartender & taking in our conversation. Very nice guy and fun to talk too. Seated very shortly after finishing drinks at the bar and had a delightful server. Our appetizers of mussels, charcuterie tray & ahi tuna were outstanding. Warm bread was served with lots of yummy butter as well. Main dishes of steak and I had crab cakes over salad. All worth returning for.

Yelp
My second time at Downtown Grill. We were able to make last minute Valentine's Day reservations. The ambiance is great! The wait staff were AMAZING!! They were so kind and accommodating to my pregnancy needs :). I prefer my steak to be medium well but as I mentioned I'm pregnant & I'm choosing the safer route to make sure I'm not consuming any raw foods. My well done steak was good!! I loved the mash potatoes & my broccoli was yummy too. I would definitely recommend Downtown Grill for anyone that's looking for a quiet but delicious place to eat.

Yelp
Best steaks in town. Awesome bourbon and cigar bar. Excellent service. Great environment.

Yelp
We were in a party but there wasn't enough room in the party room. We ended up sitting on the sides of the room on duty furniture.

Yelp
We were recommended to stop here by our hotel staff and we were not disappointed. Wasn't really hungry but we split the French onion soup and duck breast. This is one of the best French onion soups I have had. Super cheesy, great flavor. Duck breast had an awesome glaze. Really enjoyable and glad we stopped in. Cocktails were spot on and bartender service was great. Can't wait to come back to Macon to stop in again.

Yelp
My fiancé and I and her family came here for dinner. To start, we drove down the alley, which at first seemed kinda sketch, but when the valet showed up in front of the door, all was good. We noticed with some amusement that there was a placard outside that proudly boasted that Greg Allman had proposed to Cher at this place, and we remarked about how our dinner would hopefully be less rocky than that I'll-fated relationship. We started off with some drinks and appetizers. My fiancé and I had the mozzarella tomatoes, which was basically a Caprese salad, and it was nice and fresh. The bread was also really good. Crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. The highlight of our evening was when the waiter tried to deliver a double Crown Royal to my uncle in law, who doesn't drink. We figured out that it was for the table adjacent to us, and I joked to the gentleman that I was seriously thinking about keeping that one! To my surprise, the gentleman was Myron Mixon! We laughed when he said it was a nice amount of smoke, and I assured him that we all admired his smoke, and he thanked us for watching the show. Pretty cool. For dinner I had a filet with the Aloha topping, which turned out to be a fantastic shrimp side with a buerre blanc sauce which perfectly complimented not only the shrimp but the steak as well. The button mushrooms and the mashed potatoes were spot on as well. For dessert, we enjoyed the crème brûlée which had a perfect sugar crust and was creamy and delicious. If you're in Macon, you gotta check this place out. Great food, and you never know who you're gonna run into!

Yelp
Can be a bit difficult to find but what a Great spot! Really cool ambiance in the bar with incredible selections. Awesome bartender - Chris? Cigars are part of the scene. Good steaks.

Yelp
My review is mixed. The ambiance, service and appetizers were fantastic. The main dish was sadly, just not good. Steak was tough and dry and the spinach had no flavor other than heavy oil (we couldn't eat it). Admittedly I've never had a $60 dry aged steak, so maybe this is what happens in the process, but I will say I won't try it again. The meal was worth it thanks to the fabulous service and the French onion soup that was divine (I've been craving it for months and this delivered!) The marinara in our burrata was also fantastic. A great marinara seems simple but it's hard to find in my opinion, this one was perfect. Simple, balanced and flavorful. I wasn't impressed with the red wine selections by the glass, but my husbands old fashioned was great. So again, mixed. We would try it again, avoid the dry aged steak and spinach but I'm sure there are other awesome options on the menu.

Yelp
Meal was delicious. French onion soup was one of the best I've ever had. Service was impeccable from both Sierra and Erica. Malbec with blackened sirloin was the perfect pairing. I recommend the button mushroom and green beans as sides. My husband also enjoyed their Mashed potatoes. Ambiance was nice with low lighting, candles, and jazz music.

Yelp
Since moving back to Macon, this place has become a favorite go to. The food and service are always good. Locating the alley entrance to get to it is a bit challenging since we don't spend much time downtown, but it's worth the effort.

Daniel M.

Yelp
The food is ok, it is very over rated but good, definitely nothing special. The service is a bit slow and doesn't seem to care much about quality service. The atmosphere is great. Maybe we caught them on an off night, we will try it again.
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
Really good steak, the cheesecake is good, and they have an amazing bourbon selection (with decent prices).
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
Excellent. Very old school in here. There's a ton of character in this restaurant. Brick walls, white tablecloths, table lanterns, chalkboard menu on wall. Both dishes I ate were really really good. Flavortown Macon style. When you walk in from the alley you enter the bar. You can smoke a car, get a drink and eat up there. Non-smoking area is farther to the back. Very chill vibe. Highly recommend this place. Much apprec.

Yelp
Weekday Date night amazing dinner romantic cozy atmosphere - amazing service from arrival to departure. Food was incredible one of the best meals I've had in the area. Dinner for the Mister aged ribeye steak with pesto mashed potatoes and green beans . For me blackened mahi-mahi spinach and loaded baked potato for appetizer grit fritters Amazing meal and service yummy can't wait to get back there. . Ashley rocks as a waitress so delightful pleasant and friendly very attentive to all our needs made it a very special first visit

Yelp
I want to thank our server, Erika, for taking excellent care of us. We had a wonderful meal: trout for one of us, the Ribeye for another, and I had Elk. The sides were all cooked to perfection, too: crunchy and flavorful vegetables, creamy grits, mashed potatoes, and mushrooms. We started the evening with a cheese plate appetizer and medallions. They were excellent, and there was enough for the three of us to share. We ended the evening with the ice cream cake. After the copious starters and the main courses, we shared that also. The old-world charm of the restaurant was as we expected and warmed us on this cold winter evening.

Yelp
Wonderful gem in Macon, GA. Beautiful bar with anything you can imagine to drink. Great wine list. Ambiance is cozy and intimate but not stuffy. Service is amazing. The staff knows the menu and can recite the amazing specials by heart. Jordan is a wonderful server and so much more. She can advise you if you are struggling to decide between all the terrific starters and entrees. Even the sides are terrific, especially the button mushrooms. Highly recommend making a visit when you are in the area. It's worth it in every aspect.

Zachary M.

Yelp
We dined here during our 3-week road trip. This restaurant was tops. Service was excellent. Valet also. I had the delicious elk and all sides and entrees were top notch!

Craig S.

Yelp
Everything we ordered was amazing, and our server Sarah was fantastic. Cannot fully describe how much we enjoyed our meal here! Not sure if we'll ever get back to Macon, but if we do, we will definitely return to Downtown Grill.
google avatar

Amy E.

Yelp
Exceptional in every way!! The ambiance, the service and the food is the best I have encountered in quite sometime in a nice sit down restaurant. I had the filet and It was cooked to perfection!

Riley M.

Yelp
One of the best steaks I've had. Seriously, I ordered the fillet with lobster and I didn't need the lobster. The steak was perfectly done. Charred on the outside a perfect medium rare on the in -- and so tender. The appetizers were great. Actually, one was a great surprise. Shrimp (blackened) with grits (waffle). I gave it a try and I was happy that I did! The chef had a great night when we were there. That's all I can say. I am picky and usually don't leave reviews but I have to. The staff from chef to server to valet knocked it out of the park. Would I go back again? Absolutely! Would I recommend the restaurant? Absolutely. Will I ask for the gentleman that served our table? *Waves at Andrew* Yes, I would! This establishment has an old-world vibe and reminds me of some of the speakeasy fab I used to seek out in city centers when I was younger. Of course, back then I could only afford drinks at the front of the house - not so now. If you love cozy atmosphere, comfortable seating with an upscale bar offering - this might be for you. Did I mention that they valet park? They do. Right at the door, how great is that? This turned out to be a really nice evening out without the worry or hassle of rushing to park, or to leave our table too soon. Thanks Downtown grill! Your food and staff are wonderful!

Yelp
I've never eaten here but the picture look really good so i went ahead and gave it a good review! -scooter

Yelp
Outstanding service and awesome food. I got the blackened NY strip and wife got the aged ribeye. Both were cooked to perfection. The restaurant is hidden and romantic. Definitely recommend for a perfect date night!

Yelp
I'm not a local. But I have been here twice. Whenever I plan to visit Macon, Downtown grill will be my go to spot. The food was absolutely amazing. The spot is cozy...I love the vibe. The staff has been very friendly and VERY VERY knowledgeable. I would love to point out our server Jordan. If you get the pleasure of being served by her, or either Sara, you'll definitely in for a great experience. I'LL BE BACK!
google avatar

Jim P.

Yelp
My wife and I had dinner here Friday night, it was not as enjoyable as our previous visits. The muscle appetizer was on the bland side, could use more garlic and white wine. The seared scallops were charred, burnt on one side. The broccoli was next to raw. The server was knowledgeable on the specials. The back of the booth, both sides, are in need of repair; when people on the other side sat down, it would push you into the table. The bar was sub-par, the old fashioned missed the mark at this price point. Some of these issues were mentioned to the server with no concern or action.
google avatar

Yelp
Downtown grill is a great restaurant on the up and coming downtown Macon restaurant scene. We've been coming here at least once a month for the last couple years, but recently we have chosen to go elsewhere as out "go to" spot. The food here is great, but the wait staff is full of crap. The food is delicious, but it's way too inconsistent. I know there is a "cigar bar" in the entrance, but that's something that should be put elsewhere in the restaurant. Not everyone that goes there enjoys having the smell of cigar in your face as you are dining.
google avatar

Jonathan B.

Yelp
Been coming for years but Place needs to shut down the fine dining and just be a bar. Last few times I have been there I have had issues with the food and customer service. Both times wait staff acts hamstrung and runs from the problem. Is there a manager anywhere?
google avatar

Jeffrey G.

Yelp
Best restaurant in town! Made reservations here for a special occasion. The customer service here is phenomenal. The food was absolutely delicious! Plenty of options for spirited drinks and cigars if you're into that. My only gripe, which isnt much of an issue for me, but may he for others is that you have to wall through the bar area(where people are smoking) to get to the dining area. If you've never been here. You're definitely missing out!
google avatar

Raphael M.

Yelp
I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!!! I've been going here for years. Staff are great, food is fabulous. Richie goes way above and beyond to accommodate anything to make sure my family, friends and I have the best experience at Downtown Grill. Just like last Saturday, I had 16 reserved but ended up having a little over 20 people but they were able to accommodate in the last minute for all of us and did a fantastic job with food and experience. Love this place highly highly recommend.

David T.

Yelp

Yelp
A gem of a restaurant! The atmosphere is warm & cozy. The service was impeccable. Our server was friendly and super knowledgeable about the menu. The food and drinks were on point! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Our server was incredible. She had memorized all twelve specials. The food was also great. I enjoyed a generous cowboy ribeye.

Yelp
All the food was delicious my husband and I along with some friends came here to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary! The drinks were good as well

Jennifer N.

Yelp
This has been my "go to" restaurant for a nice evening out for several years. This past weekend my husband and I went with some friends and we did not have a good experience at all. My tomato cream pasta was dry and not served hot. My husband's steak was cooked incorrectly (massively overcooked) and we had to wait on a new steak. My friend's spinach salad never came out. There was no apology for the issues, and we had to hunt our server down to finally pay and leave. I am giving 3 stars because I am including previous experiences to be fair, but this experience was 1 star. An apology was in order, which we never got and I honestly expect more out of this restaurant. If you're going out to spend this much money on dinner, everything should be cooked to perfection and the service should be stellar. We will have our next outing at Oliver Perry's instead.

Steve V.

Yelp
Overpriced Premium filet cooked like beef jersey Mushrooms are good Wine selection and quality for a so called 4 star restaurant is pathetic Had the amarone 2017 vintage but was off At 70 plus dollars plus tip and tax, it's 90bucks For an inferior wine Found the same wine and 2019 vintage at 14.98 at a wine store Overall dark, dingy atmosphere. There is not much enthusiasm and can't smell the food cooking. I'm not a fan but better than most downtown restaurants, that's for sure Positive The lamb was outstanding, so I would order Lamb and stay away from their overpriced wines
google avatar

Verity W.

Yelp
This restaurant was recommended to me by my Bed and Breakfast host and I am so thankful for the recommendation! I took a Lyft to the restaurant but there seemed to be plenty of street parking on a Saturday night. The restaurant several small rooms with low ceilings and romantic dimmed lighting. The first area you walk through is a cigar area. I was surprised that the cigar smell does not travel into the other dining areas. I ordered Lamb with spinach and grits! Food was delicious and I was served a large portion. I would definitely come back and try other dishes. I think this is one of Macon's gems.
google avatar

Paul H.

Yelp
A found treasure in Macon. It is literally hidden down a Lane, aka an alley. Reward yourself and don't give up! We sat at a table in the bar area. Clarissa, our server was awesome, answering questions & making recommendations. We opted for appetizers... shrimp & grit waffles, ahi tuna, beef medallion with blue cheese, homemade mozzarella with toast points. Top that off with Honey almond graham crust ice cream pie. They easily have over 100 bourbons & whiskeys, half off wine on Wednesday so I maybe had a bourbon or 2, and the wife enjoy a little fruit of the grape. We will be back.

Deana S.

Yelp
Service was amazing Erica was our waitress. Food was good, the pumpkin bread pudding was awesome. The only thing I didn't understand was the smoking bar was where you enter.

Hattie R.

Yelp
Best ribeye, blackened ny strip, crème brûlée, and cheesecake ever! Everything we ate became a new favorite and we'll be back soon. Can't recommend enough and amazing service with server+valet!

Yelp
By far one of my favorite places there is. The veal Parmesan is UNREAL. I love downtown grill

Kashai S.

Yelp
Came here for a double date with my mama and her husband and me and my husband. As a group we ordered two appetizers the Barrata and Grit Fritters. My mother and I also ordered a chocolate martini and my husband got a side car. All the drinks were made VERY well. I was impressed. My chocolate martini tasted like dark chocolate with a healthy pour of liquor. The Barrata appetizer was amazing. It was a mozzarella ball with a ricotta like inside and a house made marinara sauce with toasted bread for dipping. The Grit Fritter didn't taste like much and had a really weird texture. It definitely was not my favorite and I won't be ordering that again. My chicken was cooked well, it was still tender and juicy. It was seasoned decently and the marsala sauce definitely added some flare to the dish. I did have to season up my spinach though because it was kind of bland. My husband had the Bison Steak, Spinach, and pesto mashed potatoes. His steak was cooked perfectly and it had a decent flavor, but it like the spinach was also under seasoned. Our server, I think her name was Megan, was so sweet. She was very attentive and knowledgeable I was very impressed. I forgot to mention we also got the Amaretto ice cream pie. It was really good! The honey sauce that they put on the outside pairs perfectly with the slight sweetness of the icecream within the pie. I will definitely be back again!

Yelp
It has been a year since my awful experience at Downtown Grill. This time, I did everything differently and ordered the opposite of what I did before. The appetizer, burrata in marinara, was the worst part of the meal. It was tasty and great to eat, but it was lukewarm, like our previous experience. It made me nervous for the meal since I didn't want to get sick again. I ordered the pork chop special that was stuffed with apples and shallots. And, I had to say, it was DIVINE. It was warmer than the appetizer, but it didn't bother me too much. My broccoli was done slightly on the raw side, and the grits were wonderfully done. I must say the best part of the meal was that pecan pie. Rule of thumb in Georgia--ordering Pecan pie is the best way to end the meal and will never be a disappointment. Overall, a much better experience than the last time, but the restaurant still has food temperature issues.

Yelp
A little hard to find but worth it. Amazing cheese plate. The house salad was insanely delicious. I had the stuff Filet. Food and service was amazing our waitress was on the ball and really knew her stuff. Made the whole experience well worth it. You should go if you get the chance! Loved it!

Yelp
Booked a reservation for a special occasion on their website. Showed up a few minutes early tonight and were told they did not have a reservation for me. I proceeded to show her a screenshot of my reservation, she wouldn't even look at it. She said I'm sorry I don't know what to tell you I have 91 reservations to seat tonight. I said no, you have 92 as I HAVE a reservation. She said sorry can't help you. You shouldn't have booked online you should have called instead. I said so as a guest who HAS a reservation we will wait for the next available table even though it will not be at our reserved time. She said no she has to seat the other 91 tables between then and closing. So in short.... Their website doesn't update their seating plan and it's not only the clients fault, it's also their problem oh and forget your special occasion these people don't give a damn.

Edwin G.

Yelp
Just don't be shocked as prices are on the high side. Food is excellent.

Ross B.

Yelp
Back again. Dry aged ribeye again. Coerced through a social obligation. Once again, medium rare is my white whale at downtown grill. If only I didn't have such a weird doneness request. I hate that I seem to be the only person in the history of downtown grill to request the arcane and forbidden most common doneness of the most common steak. If only dovetail offered dry aged comfort farms ribeye that was $10 less. If only loom offered a wagyu ribeye that was $30 less. Maybe I wouldn't have to deal with kitchen staff that looked at medium rare ribeye like it was the Gordian knot. Pictures attached.

Yelp
Found this old historic place on Yelp I was using Yelp to help me find great spots In Macon Georgia Downtown Grill off Mulberry St., this place has been around since the early 70s when Macon was a big part of the music scene Gregg Allman asked Cher to marry him here A rather small brick building hard to find on Mulberry Lane right off Mulberry Street the food is delicious we had a mixed grill plate of lamb steak and quail fried artichokes mashed potatoes sautéed mushrooms definitely a great spot to eat and visit
