El Zaguán Mexican Bistro replaces El Sombrero in Downtown Las Vegas | Eater Vegas

"Housed in a striking setting that mixes old-world Mexican motifs with Las Vegas glam, this upscale spot in the Las Vegas Design Center pairs traditional south-of-the-border flavors with top-of-the-line ingredients for a different take on Mexican cuisine. Reviewers note moderate prices, knowledgeable service and standout cocktails, and praise its convenient, lively location near the Smith Center." - Bradley Martin

We stayed for a week and left very happy. This place is exceptionally clean and maintained. Fun and unique decor. We felt safe walking from Fremont street to the motel and also inside the property. The staff is super nice. Lesley checked us in and was helpful and I loved how she remembered us every time we saw her. I’m glad I chose this property for our stay.

I enjoyed my trip to the Downtowner. It was very cute, comfy and in a good location. A special shout out to Paul at the front desk who was incredibly welcoming and made me feel at home. He’s the type of guy that makes a spot. As for the place- a couple blocks from Fremont street, cozy/clean rooms. I would say there is some noise from the street, but you’re in Vegas so that should be expected. Would stay here again- it’s a great value for location and quality.

I'd give it 1.5 stars but not 2. Thankfully we were just there to sleep, and only for one night. It seemed clean enough, but the renovations they did to turn these old apartments into a hotel were clearly not professionally done. It felt like it was still a grungy old place, just with some colorful pain and astroturf nailed to the wall. We were in the Wylde building. I got the feeling that the rooms in that section may be worse than the rest of the hotel. The front desk staff was not friendly when we checked in. Check out was friendly. The worst part was that our room had a sewer smell. I think it was from the window AC unit. It was old and probably hadn't been serviced for ages. The "check filter" light was on, and the buttons were worn so much that you could barely read them. One was missing completely. There was a dead cockroach in the track of the bathroom window when we opened it to try to air out the sewer smell. The sheet on the bed didn't fully cover the mattress. The bottom 10 inches or so were just exposed mattress pad. On a positive note, I felt safe and didn't have to pay a bunch of resort or other extra fees. Parking is down the street, but not far.

Great location near all the happenings of the Fremont street area. Quiet enough to not be disturbed at night. We stayed in the main building and it was clean and comfortable. For it being a boutique hotel, I found the check-in process to be impersonal. I don’t mind a self check in (via kiosk) at large hotels to reduce wait times BUT I felt invisible because the front desk also doubled as the bartender and there were people at the bar shooting the sh!t with her. So no warm welcome or even acknowledgment that we were there. ||||But overall a nice place to stay.

Google
Stayed for one night. Overall stay was fine. Cheap stay. Good location. Parking is free but across the street, or even further down the street if the first lot is full. The check in processes is redundant. You have to stop at the desk and show ID and credit card and then go to another station and do a self check-in where you scan your ID and use your card to pay the deposit then make your own key. There's really no purpose to have to stop at the desk. They have a 24 hour bar and offer mini golf until 10pm which is nice. The room was overall clean but there was a small roach in the bathroom. The door didn't seal around all of the edges. The place could use some updates.

Google
Positive: The staff and especially staff were great, there was a mix up on my part and she fixes it for me with no issues. The inner courtyard was amazing with a nice mini golf type course. A+ with a 5 minute walk to Fremont Negative: ""

Let's first talk about the water pressure! Oh my gosh probably the best I've ever experienced in a hotel! The staff at the front was friendly and knowledgeable. The rooms were awesome and clean. After driving in from Colorado the bed was super comfy! The rooms have amazing ac! The pool was nice, wasn't terribly cold, amazingly refreshing. It's across the street from the hotel through a locked gate so we felt very safe. My only complaint, and I did read there were no refrigerators or microwaves in the room but I have to question, if I have to pay a resort fee shouldn't I have a microwave and a refrigerator? I think that this hotel should really look into installing these. I did call ahead to request two rooms on the first floor together, and they were very accommodating. Everything was set up before I arrived. If I had the opportunity I would definitely stay here again! Oh and it's very conveniently located near to Fremont street, Container District and a huge flaming praying mantis!

Google
I like my stay there. However, they are very strict on guests coming in and out and have to verify which is a good thing, but also a little much seeing as how it’s downtown. And you may want to have a Friend or two over if you’re spending a few nights down there and meet people or meet up with people you know, but at the same time it’s good for security because there are some unfavorable elements in that neighborhood like any city, but I think they really did a good job of keeping you safe. The rooms are very clean. The staff very personal, and it is an affordable and central location Close to Main attractions, and They have accommodations and a little mini golf course and pool. That a lot of families like to attend, so I’d say overall, I enjoyed my stay there. Plan to Stay again someday

Yelp
In trying a truly vintage Las Vegas motel, be it only for nostalgia, The Downtowner was a pleasant surprise. CHECK IN: Unorthodox. After the Front desk clerk/ Bartender entered some info, i then had to activate my own keys at a nearby kiosk. Heh? ROOM: The room was surprisingly a vintage gem! It was clean, everything in good repair and well kept. There was ample closet space too. I found the bed to be very comfortable. Noise was at a minimum! this room was a deal. Property: This property is Secure. there is only 1 way in. Parking, Free in a seedy lot across the street. Good Luck. Although nothing happened while i visited. Pool: Yes! A real pool and a deep one.

Yelp
We stayed for one night and the overall stay was fine. The price is good which is why we stayed. The location is convenient. We were busy so didn't get to experience either. The room was mostly clean but there was a small roach in the bathroom. The door didn't seal around all of the edges so we could easily hear what was going on outside. The place could use some updates.

Yelp
We stayed at this Motel for the weekend and Lesley our bartender is amazing. She will make whatever drink you can come up with and the rooms are clean and comfortable!!!

Yelp
Overall, I found the Downtowner to be very pleasant. The rooms were clean, the beds were comfy and there were no bugs. The prices are fair and they have low resort fees. I stayed here for the first time in 2024 and have stayed several times since then. It's one of the places that previously been rehabbed from the flood of Tony Hsieh money when he was alive and doing a great deal to revitalize downtown. I love that they kept the old school motel vibe, giving you a sense of what old Vegas was like. It's very close to Fremont street to be easily walkable but far away enough that it's not too noisy. Free parking in the city lot across the street for guests. They also have a small pool across the street which always seemed to be empty so it felt like a large private patio when I was there. A few things to note is that in the main building, there's no choice between heat or AC since they can only either heat or cool the entire building. It's something they switch depending on the season. You have individual controls in your room but that's only basic controls like off, low, high etc. Also, that old system can give off a musty/mildewy odor which is sometimes noticeable in the lobby and some rooms. The Wylde is a separate building and all those rooms have dedicated AC/Heating units if that's an issue. Lastly, the check-in process may be odd for those who aren't use to it. You are directed to an iPad to scan your ID, complete check-in and register the room key yourself. The employees are nice enough but it's not Bellagio level service which can be fake nice. They're just down to earth people who will leave you alone during your stay which is fine for me! They were also nice enough to hold a bag for half a day after I checked out.

Yelp
This place was so kitschy and cute! You can tell that a lot of love went into curating the retro yet still relevant vibe of the place. Check-in was a little confusing as there is a front desk as well as several check-in kiosks. Kiosks work smoothly but we still had to get into the main line to finish getting our room keys made as well as getting a parking pass. Parking is included in the fees, but is not onsite -- you need to park in a lot across 8th st at the Fremont intersection. We had a room in the Wylde building and it definitely gave converted studio apartment vibes. The walls are not very insulated so everything feels loud and echo-y (at least at the front of the building). The bathroom had no tub, but did have a huge shower. All in all, we would stay here again (especially without kids).

Yelp
Communication (let it be known you guys have a deposit). They advertise but don't tell or say it is a 100 dollar deposit.

Jamie E.

Yelp
This place is SO cute! From the time I walked through the front door I had had a great experience. Lesley at the front desk has a wonderful demeanor and a true understanding of hospitality. Didn't get a chance to play the mini golf but looks very fun! The proximity to Fremont street makes this property convenient but still manages to stay peaceful. Highly recommended!

Yelp
We stayed here because of the affordable price and the convenient location near food and attractions, but the experience was pretty disappointing overall. Check-in was frustrating -- our names were misspelled in the system, and we were asked to provide and take photos of our IDs, which felt unnecessary and made us concerned about privacy. The room had several problems: the cold water handle on the sink didn't work, there were sticky spots on the floor, and the table looked like it could collapse at any moment. We had to switch rooms because the bunk beds didn't have railings on the top bunks, which was unsafe. The restroom was extremely small, and the bedsheets and pillows were stained. Parking was inconvenient -- it's located across the street, so we had to carry our luggage through the Vegas heat, which was not fun. The lobby also had an odd smell that didn't make a great first impression. To make matters worse, we were charged extra at checkout by mistake, and it took time to get that resolved. The staff were fairly cooperative, and the location is close to a lot of attractions, but overall, the condition of the hotel just didn't meet even basic expectations.

Yelp
Cant beat it with a stick. I would stay here again, with some caveats. I have been staying at the El Cortez since the pandemic, and this place always caught my attention, but I like El Cortez so much, I never felt the need to try something else. I booked directly Mon-checkout thursday for SEMA 2025. three nights, all in with the BS fees was $297. I got the absolute cheapest room they had...the updgrade had coffee maker, but I stayed true to my plans and got the most basic room. The room is obviously old, but it was nicely clean, with clean sheets. The AC has 4 settings, i didnt see a way to turn the heater on, but maybe i just didnt see it. The mattress had some mileage on it, but it was still ok...the sheets clean, the pillow covers clean, the pillows fine. They serve coffee in the lobby till 11, i never tried it. The hotel doesnt seem ADA accessible if that is a concern...there is a step to get into the front lobby, but maybe there is a ramp i didnt see. My biggest fear was the open parking lot in the front...i was afraid some crackhead would break into my car, but there was no problem. The pool is also across the street in a parking lot, if youre interested. There isnt much traffic in the street so crossing isnt a problem. The place is old school, and feels old school, and its the exact reason i like El Cortez. The ceilings are kinda low. I got a room in a lower floor, and it was ok monday and tuesday night, but as we got closer to the weekend more and more people checked in, and then the door slamming and foot steps kinda got outta hand. The hotel is also near the grasshopper that does the fire and music show at container park. You can hear the noise from this in your room. You cant hear the noise from fremont street so fortuantely container park shuts down at 12 or 11, so it isnt too bad. I would defintely stay here again, if i could gurantee a 2nd story room.

Yelp
Hotel is at a good location near Fremont. Good hospitality and great staff! Their is a bike station nearby to get around Fremont easily

Manuel S.

Yelp
Had a great stay overall. The hotel was clean, comfortable, and in a convenient location. Check-in was smooth, and Dee was friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The room was well maintained and quiet, which made it easy to relax. Would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others visiting the area.

Yelp
Staff was friendly and inviting! Check in is where the 24 hour bar top is. Has a mini golf course you have to walk thru to get to your room. Which is playable. The room was spacious and clean. Had llama hotel novelties which was a super plus for me. Had a little dress in room in the room with a green turf background which was great to take pics in! Definitely would stay again!

Yelp
Found this stain on my comforter I actually touched it. It was disgusting. I told them in the office and they didn't do anything about it. I wrote a review already here and for some reason they removed it saying I lied and stole this picture from another place which I Didn't, It is on my phone. I took it myself. My daughter was also staying there, I showed her and my husband, they seen it with their own eyes. I told Leslie about it.

Yelp

Yelp
Nice cozy place. Miniature golf sticks out. Front desk people are very helpful. Its a away from the downtown noise. I would come again. Leslie was an amazing host with her witty personality.

Yelp
The best I've ever encountered! To whoever owns or manages this place, thank you for this staff! Best place to stay in Vegas, love you all!

Yelp
Such a nice clean motel. Leslie was amazing with handling my reservation debacle she was so nice & patient!! Entire property is clean, ac blows super cold. Bar inside lobby with a mini golf in courtyard area! 5 minutes ago walk to Fremont street. I travel for work and give this spot a A+ for convenience and cleanliness.

S S.

Yelp
Beds had no blankets only sheets. And they don't put the sheets on normal on the bottom. The sink in the bathroom smells like sewer. Other than that everything was ok. Room was clean. No onsite parking had to park in a public parking across the street.
google avatar

Marcus S.

Yelp
Wow! This is a retro 60's style hotel located in Downtown Las Vegas. It is a quant find. It offers mini golf that will chaallwnge even the best. I highly recommend making my stay at the Downtainer Boutique Hotel
google avatar

Denise L.

Yelp
The hotel was quirky. The front desk doubles as a bar. The courtyard doubles as a mini golf course. The outlets in the room were oddly placed so there was no clock or bedside lamp. I couldn't charge my phone to use it as an alarm or clock because the only outlet that didn't turn off with the lights was across the room. The area was a little noisy and I was woken by nearby noisy sex the first night. The second night, I had to ask the front desk for security to shut down the 2am discussion happening just outside my room. Once security moved the offending parties, it was fine. I know this was not the hotel's fault. The music for the mini golf course was really loud and ran from 9 am to 10 pm. I was out of the room for most of it, but I had a hard time settling in before the music was turned off. Check in was easy, but I arrived early so they held my bags. I would stay here again for a short trip. Longer trips require me to have more sleep than the outside night noise allowed.

Aton P.

Yelp
Great spot in a great location downtown everything in here is nice and renovated and very clean. The people checking me and were so awesome. Dan and Savannah were very helpful and they have an early check-in option which is phenomenal and they also have a little game that I can play in the front which is also pretty cool. I may have mini golf. Mini golf is cool.
google avatar

Yelp
Leslie the bartender is amazing!!! The atmosphere is chill and the vibe is live!!!! Play planko and win a drink!!! Highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Jarrod R.

Yelp
We picked the downtown or hotel to be close to the Fremont Street experience and I was impressed with the look of the exterior, their Vegas-esque neon sign, that looks especially fantastic at night. The courtyard with miniature golf and the requisite pink flamingo motif is kitchy and fun. Not to mention the palm trees in the courtyard and plenty of seating to hang out with family and friends. Overall, the rooms are comfortable, and the staff was more than happy to take care of any requests. While this is a little bit of a trip to the strip, it is much less chaotic. If you are traveling on a budget, the downtown is an excellent choice. It will leave you with more money for shows or other fun activities that you have planned.
google avatar

Alice O.

Yelp
Check in with Dee was smooth. our room was clean, quiet times are observed and they keep the grounds clean. It was a great fit for my family and I.

Yelp

Yelp
Small boutique hotel that had a bar in the lobby that was open 24 hours! Super safe door to the lobby locks and you can enter without a key! Stay here you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Three days in a row staff has gone above and beyond for our group. We could not have asked for a better time at a venue. Shak has serviced some of the greatest drinks and has taken the time needed to communicate with us about our group and suggest some amazing drinks that I personally have not experienced before. This is a venue that you would expect in a beach resort from a Sandals Resort commercial. Thank you for hosting us and being some of the most welcoming and friendly staff we have experienced.

Yelp
Awesome place for a band on the road. Easy trip to venues in the west Vegas area. Good bar in the lobby also the staff is amazing

Yelp
Nice little place to stay down by Fremont, it's a short walk down the road far enough away to have some quiet. Simple spaces, bed was comfortable and the room was clean. The staff are friendly and helpful. I would stay here again. The only drawback is there is no onsite restaurant but there are some good places to eat within a few blocks

Bryce D.

Yelp
I stayed at the Downtowner for a layover and Dee in the morning was such a blessing and made everything so easy. she even transferred me to a bigger unit just because I asked nicely and they had the space to do so! incredible! very chill vibe and they have a mini golf course! free wifi, and tv you can't beat the price! -ben

Yelp
Danny was thee most amazing bartender I've ever met at this place I definitely will be coming again ! He needs to be recognized for his work and customer service!

Guillermo C.

Yelp
Service was great and Lesley is awesome. I was in town for the Best Friends Forever festival so it was busy but they were able to keep up with me and all of their clients in a timely manner.

Yelp
Cozy place right in the heart of Fremont Street experience! Staff are friendly and informative, if you need extras and they have it, they will give it to you! Big shower!

Yelp
Shout out to Leslie and Paul at the downtowner! Always very polite! It's a great environment to be around. This is the place to stay if you're ever in the area!

Yelp
I came down to the bar motel as a guest of the Downtowner, and the receptionist / bartender, Lesley was very helpful. She knew the menu and knew what to recommend. I would come back here just for her service.

Lauren P.

Yelp
Love it here! Great staff (incredibly accommodating!) , clean rooms with great toiletries, no riff-raff like other hotels downtown. Not to mention the mini golf courtyard area is BEAUTIFUL! such a chic hotel at a great price. You need to visit here!!

Jill Y.

Yelp
Staff, room, and location were great but management leaves room to be desired. Would recommend this place and I'm a local.
google avatar

Loretta G.

Yelp
Love the customer service! Daniel, Paul, Dee, and Leslie were super amazing! I was originally going to stay 1 night and stayed 5 days.
google avatar

Kevin M.

Yelp
Cute little place near downtown Las Vegas, a close to Fremont St, but far enough that you're not bothered by the noise. Reasonably priced with a resort fee about half of what most places in Vegas charge, and that includes free access to a fun six hole mini golf course they have onsite. Rooms weren't anything to write home about, but they were fine for the price. Late checkout to 1:00 pm available for an extra $10, totally worth it!
google avatar

Tree S.

Yelp
Nice rooms Convenient bar next to check in Putting green was fun Free parking Ac works great

Isaac P.

Yelp
Leslie is amazing , Great stay! Clean rooms, friendly staff, and perfect location. Highly recommend!"
google avatar

Alexandra P.

Yelp
The staff here was so lovely & accommodating. Location is great - close enough to walk to DTLV but far enough away that it's a quiet respite. Rooms are clean, shower had good water pressure and never-ending hot water. The lobby bar was a great spot for a nightcap as well. I only wish that the lighting in my room was a little less harsh. A lamp would have improved that aspect. I ended up covering the lighting fixtures with shirts during my stay to mellow things out a bit.
google avatar

Dave C.

Yelp
Best vibe in downtown. Lesley made sure I was in the right place (thanks Lesly ) and is a bright spot in the neighborhood. Perfect spot for a quick stay.
