The service was fast efficient and friendly. The ambiance was off because of the television that was broadcast 24 hour cable news. There were three chefs rolling sushi so our order of 5 rolls and 6 piece of sashimi came out in about 20 minutes. Not the most delicious or beautiful sushi I’ve eaten but a solid place I would come back to if I was in the neighborhood.

Google
The food is good, but the size of the dozo special salad was really disappointing. The taste was amazing, but was almost just the protein, there should be nice more greens or veggies, like a poke bowl.

Google
Delicious food! We had standard and speciality rolls and they were excellent: fresh ingredients perfectly presented. Great experience! Staff is courteous, service is good and timely. Highly recommend this place in Livingston !

Google
Attentive service, reasonable prices, convenient, and damn good sushi! Try the St. Patrick roll if your craving a wee bit of lobster 🦞

We went there as the kids wanted me to take them to a sushi place.. We went to dozo as we were close by. We were pleseantly surprised by the yummy sushi we got to eat. I highly recommend their 'out of control' roll, 'sweetheart' roll. The Gyoza was very tasty. On the dessert front, the mochi ice cream was very good.

Google
We visited Dozo Sushi this afternoon for some good sushi. If you're looking for delectable sushi that is bursting with flavor, this is the right place! It's quite a nice atmosphere upon entering. The employees are friendly and welcoming. Menus are pretty easy to navigate - even if you don't go out for sushi often. I ordered the Rock n' Roll sushi. It was delicious, and the plate looked fabulous! The sushi plate was presented in a way that would likely impress a patron who regularly frequents 5-star restaurants. The food presentation along with the rich flavors and pleasant service make this a perfect place to get Asian cuisine! This was a great location for a pleasant afternoon meal.

The food was delicious. 😋We enjoyed our rolls, particularly the sweet potato rolls. The owner was super friendly. It was a simple, nice and quiet dining experience. We will return when in the area.

Google
BEST sushi in the area! Our family's go-to restaurant and we were always satisfied. Food is fresh and delicious, with great presentation. Staff is nice. The restaurant is very clean and decorated with taste.

Yelp
Good sushi, great service and BYOB = a very good combination. I want to emphasize the BYOB as I actually had to scroll through a lot of reviews to find this, so hopefully this floats towards the top to more easily find. Also, very very kid friendly, which is a huge plus for families with little ones. Kids need to eat of the regular menu (no kids menu) but extra attention given to them and a lot of patience with smiles when utensils start dropping and need replacement.

Yelp
Only recently I've started to try different eateries in Livingston. I'm from the area, but kind of slept on what's around town here. Last week, we went to Dozo for dinner during work week (it was also partly a celebration/treat-yo-self meal together). Our one favorite local sushi spots never quite returned to dine-in service after the pandemic, so we've been looking for a replacement. Dozo is a strong contender. Sushi was great. My vegetarian husband ordered AAC Roll, Sweet Potato Roll, Peanut Avocado Roll, and one of the specialty rolls - an Evergreen Roll. He was happy. I, because it's a new spot, went with a standard to try it out, so I ordered a Sushi Deluxe. Very good. Before our entrees, we got Age Tofu and Vegetarian Gyoza for appetizers. Pretty good. We didn't order this, but we saw that they have desserts as well as Ramune, which was cool to see on the menu. Kids love those Japanese sodas. (Who am I kidding? I love them and I'm a grown adult!) Dozo has friendly service, too. In short, we're fans, for sure. Recommended without hesitation!

Yelp
Negimaki very good. Goyza good. Shrimp Tempura pre-made. Soba soup bad taste. Rock Shrimp sauce eh and not good spicy heat. But what do I know?

Scott G.

Yelp
An absolute favorite! We do at least one take-out a week. Always delicious, fresh, and tasty. They're usually super-fast to make the orders, except on nights when everyone else decides to order. (Nights before holidays when no one wants to cook are an example.) But we really love this place. They do a ton of takeout, so the word is out. But I give it three thumbs up! They also seem to have plenty of dine-ins, so that's an option. Enjoyed a couple of rolls, dumplings, and salad just last night. Livingston's got a shortage of things that aren't Italian food or Chinese, and I've given up on the second, so Dozo's a great choice for easy dinners or lunch. LOVE IT!

Melissa S.

Yelp
Very good sushi. Could have been more pieces on the Monster Roll. Good service. Easy to get to.

Lyndsie L.

Yelp
Sushi lunch special was good. Staff was friendly and fish tastes fresh. Id come back again!

Stephanus S.

Yelp
I went here with my family. I ordered the Dozo Omakasie for 1 it consists of a toro scallion roll and 8 pieces of sushi. It tasted very good. The sushi is a good temperature where it's not cold. They have a good selection of rolls and other sushi as well as traditional cooked Japanese dishes. I recommend this place.

Julie S.

Yelp
New to the Livingston area since Jan 2022 and my S/O and I used to LOVE Dozo. Note: we always ordered takeout, so much so that we always ordered every 2-3 weekends. The quality has drastically decreased over the year, and we started feeling sick after. Not food poisoning in particular, but just an uncomfortable feeling in our stomachs. We gave it many chances (picking up ASAP, calling ahead before the night got busy, calling on Sat vs Sun and vice vers). We gave it the benefit of the doubt every single time, but I think we're done with Dozo now.

Edgar E.

Yelp
Good location, decent restaurant, but average sushi. It was our first visit and we were hoping for better.

Marisa H.

Yelp
Finally returned to dinner at Dozo in-person even though their restaurant has been open for indoor dining for a while. We had been ordering for pick-up during the pandemic but we were so glad to come back to eat inside. There were a few tables of diners and a lot of pick-up orders around 5:30/6Pm. Celebrated our daughter's birthday and, of course, Dozo sushi was her bday dinner choice. Everyone is so nice, attentive, and appreciative of the customers' business. Just love that the owner/manager still remembers us after all this time. The sushi, sashimi, and rolls were great. Fresh and not teeny skimpy pieces. Even the plating was beautiful. Thank you for the great dinner, extra treats for us and our daughter, and just overall great service. We will be back soon!

Yelp
I gotta say when they first open I was in love with this place but they are just not always consistent with their orders. Last week I ordered shrimp tempura for the first time and I was really surprised when I received it. It was not like a regular shrimp tempura roll.. it was wrapped in cucumber and contained a lighter sauce. DELICIOUS. Well I wish I knew what it actually was because I wanted the same exact thing last night and instead I received the standard shrimp tempura roll. Now I am confused, what did I get last time?? I would love to have that again and thought maybe that's how they make their shrimp tempura but it seems like I got the wrong order. Now I am dreaming of a roll I don't know what it is!!! I get basic rolls so I can't judge much, I like the size they aren't as huge as some sushi places . I hate chewing sushi for 10 minutes because the roll is so large. On their menu, I love shrimp Sumai, the Thai vegetable roll and their sesame chicken is AMAZING. I don't bother going anywhere else but Dozo for that. It is definitely more money but it's very good. They get busy so placing an order around dinner time is a standard like 45 to an hour wait to plan accordingly.

Greg's G.

Yelp
The food was amazing and the among of sushi for the price is really good as well. The salmon cucumber was my personal favorite and the miso soup really adds to the food. Thanks Dozo for good sushi! The service was as well amazing and they double checked for any mistakes in the order. Amazing food and service.

Erez B.

Yelp
Great sushi at affordable prices. Very friendly service for both dine-in and take-out.

Yelp
A nice sushi experience in an otherwise remote location. Dozo Sushi offers tasty, fresh sushi in the school district area of Livingston county. Though out of the way, Dozo offers a nice assortment of sushi in addition to other traditional Japanese dishes. Dozo has a "modern" take on sushi, with rolls that can include tempura, peppers, and cream cheese. I prefer more traditional roles myself, and stuck to classic sushi and sashimi, but for those interested in trying more interestingly named rolls, this might suit your fancy. Livingston doesn't offer many great sushi restaurants, with the only other notable brand being Zen's Sushi. Dozo offers better prices, but smaller portions, though I found Dozo to also have slightly higher quality. If you need some sushi and want something local, Dozo will scratch that itch for raw fish.

Sue S.

Yelp
So I came here because my friend was in the mood for sushi and I found this place on yelp! The parking is plentiful and the waitresses are very attentive which I loved (constantly refilling our waters and asking if we were ready to order/needed anything). The food was not bad, I got the pink lady roll which was good. I wouldnt say there's anything bad about this place but nothing too special about it either.

Brian K.

Yelp
Our go-to place for fresh delicious sushi. Staff is always friendly. Love the Livingston Roll!!!

Rachel S.

Yelp
I live in the area and decided to give Dozo Sushi a try. To say it was disappointing was pretty accurate. I ordered a roll and a few separate sushi pieces. The sushi roll was not fresh, possibly spoiled and underwhelming in flavor. The prices are displayed on the online ordering platform, but do not specify now many pieces are in an sushi order. If I am spending a minimum of $6 per order of sushi, I would expect there to be at least two piece or having it listed in the menu. Won't be returning.

Hong Y.

Yelp
BEST sushi in the area! Our family's go-to restaurant and we were always satisfied. Food is fresh and delicious, with great presentation. Staff is nice. The restaurant is very clean and decorated very nice.

Yelp
Tried this place when they first opened years ago. My impression was... just a typical fake Japanese restaurant in suburb. Gave another try recently, I only had a few bites and couldn't finish. Funky flavor and terrible texture completely turned me off. Trust me! I hate wasting food and complaining about what people cook.

Danjjaaa R.

Yelp
Has gone way downhill from when it opened. This used to be our spot after zen sushi started getting "meh" but the quality and consistency recently is terrible, and the prices are premium. Today, each roll we ordered was short 2 pieces (and what was there had pieces cut inconsistently and rolled loosely). When I called, I was told, after being made to wait, that I was correct that I was missing pieces of sushi, but the best they could do was a 10% discount on my next order because they were "very busy". Next time it's Kim's, a place that's at least worth the wait!

Bruce F.

Yelp
I normally like their food, but this time the rolls seemed of lower quality. Much more importantly for the take-out experience, though, is the fact that online ordering process sucks if you like knowing what you're getting. They outsourced their menu listing to another company and the main menu items lack a description (except for their "special rolls", which do have descriptions). When I consider ordering a Rainbow Roll or Boston Roll, I don't know what Dozo has put in them. I am left to guessing the ingredients by searching online for common sushi names. If I am lucky, Boston Roll from Dozo will be the same as Boston Roll from somewhere else. But is just a guess. Even more challenging, how about a "Salmon Sa"? What the heck is that? Looks like I need to try another place. I even came to Yelp hoping to see a menu with descriptions of the rolls. No such luck.

Justine C.

Yelp
I'm not a sushi expert but this place is pretty good. We had Naki salad, shrimp and veg tempura and steamed gyoza and all were delish. I had a Pink and Black roll and was impressed with the freshness and size of the roll. We also ordered the crispy sesame chicken and I could do without that. Everyone around us were ordering the Spicy Tuna rolls, so I assume it's probably very good there. Next time I'll just go for the sushi and skip the entree. And it's BYOB, so make sure to bring your fave bev!

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
Really great new addition to the sorely lacking Livingston dining scene. For the life of me, I can't figure out how so many excellent restaurants in this town fail to stand the test of time. Fingers crossed that this latest addition has some legs as I can easily see it becoming our go to sushi spot, especially since they stay open later than a lot of their competition. Food and service as well as selection are all wonderful. As of yet, I've only ordered sushi but plan on expanding my horizons the next time we pay them a visit. On a side note, both times we've been there, a couple with their young children has occupied a booth in close proximity to us. The issue is that we're rarely there before 9:30, choosing to eat later in the day in order to avoid screaming kids. They allow their youngest to run rampant around the restaurant while the mother sits there with an enormous bottle of wine and gets inebriated. If you must take your young children out, might I respectfully suggest doing so at a more reasonable hour or buy a smaller bottle of wine and use the savings to pay a sitter. Or...get take out and get loaded in the comfort of your own home. Diners are out to enjoy their meals, not entertain your wandering children, adorable as they may be. I understand management's desire to maintain their loyal patrons but if it was my place I might choose to have a word with the parents. Go & enjoy! You'll be glad you did.

Katrina P.

Yelp
The food here is super fresh and tasty! I love light foods and they do a great job of making delicious rolls that are not too heavy. Ordering online is also a great addition that makes the business even better!

Amira I.

Yelp
Spicy Tuna Sushi and sashimi combo was tasty!!! First time here and will be back..only thing missing is Sake which that's Jersey for you...and surprised with green tea vanilla sundae

Sheri S.

Yelp
Friendly service. Came On a Sunday night which was busy. Easy, fast service, local sushi place to pop in. We did not have a reservation and were seated immediately. Would come back again!

Rita H.

Yelp
Ordered take out today for a birthday lunch!! Maki combo, Boston roll and the Pink Lady roll that had tempura shrimp with rice, avocado wrapped in salmon skin. Delicious! Quick pick up as well. You won't regret trying out this place!

Jess P.

Yelp
We have been eating at Dozo for over a year now and has become our weekly go to place! Always fresh and good customer service!

Abi C.

Yelp
Good sushi for a good price. Their lunch specials always hits the spot when im craving sushi. Friendly staff

Richard W.

Yelp
Very, very good sushi and sashimi. Owners have maintained their initial promise of offering an excellent selection of "omacase" fish, direct from Japan, while also offering the standard sushi, sashimi and rolls that appeal to so many Americans. Kitchen dishes, too, are fresh, flavorful and nicely prepared, if a bit unimaginative (very traditional). My only criticism is that the menu is the same from year to year and season to season with few variations. Service is excellent under the watchful supervision (and participation) of the gracious and eager owner and host. The ambiance of the simple dining room is exceeded by the food and service. Reservations are honored. BYOB.

Mark L.

Yelp
Wonderful quality sushi in Livingston! My go to roll is the Pink Lady Roll although the peanut avocado roll is amazing!

Meredith S.

Yelp
Dozo is the best sushi restaurant in the area. They bring in fish fresh daily. The whole staff is welcoming and attentive. We love it here.

Snatchy P.

Yelp
Love their lunch bento boxes... The lobster tempura rolls are my favorite... Everything I've tried from here has been spot on.. My weekly guilty pleasure, highly recommend....

Julie L.

Yelp
Was introduced by friends who order all the time. Just ordered last night and the quality had gone down hill. The fish was small and poorly cut. The avocado was spoiled. We won't be ordering again.

Jennifer P.

Yelp
Always really good food and great service. Not a sushi eater but really enjoy all of their other offerings.

Brooke F.

Yelp
Dozo was amazing! Unfortunately I wasn't able to dine in at this time because of Covid but I was definitely able to enjoy their yummy food! I had the shumai which was fantastic, the kani salad which was amazing and two orders of the salmon sashimi which was incredible! I ALSO got an avocado roll and a kani salad roll I believe (I know I eat so much when I get sushi) and the rolls were amazing as well, I would highly recommend! :)

Michael G.

Yelp
I really like this place but only for take out. I have gotten take out twice and have eaten there twice and both times the take out was very good and eating in the restaurant was not. The service is super slow both times as I had to constantly flag someone down to bring us napkins or water or utensils! The food isn't as fresh either. Odd I know but maybe they do more take out business hence the fresher tasting food? It's still the best Japanese in the area but wish they'd beef up their staff in the restaurant. I did take out again last night and it was outstanding. Everything was so fresh and delicious. I'm bumping up to 4 stars as this is easily the best Japanese in the area. Still don't plan on dining in though in the near future - take out only. Tried take out - hadn't done so in awhile Not nearly as good as it used to be. Chicken in the fried rice was rubbery and rice wasn't totally cooked. Chicken teriyaki also rubbery. Not impressed.

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Dozo roll, Philadelphia roll, salmon avocado, salmon lover roll, thai ice tea Their salmon is the best, really fresh!!

Alan F.

Yelp
Very good and affordable sushi. Comparable in quality to Zen in Livingston & Kim's Sushi in West Orange. Much more affordable and better sushi than Aru Sushi down the room. They offer take out which seems popular and very friendly. New "go to" sushi place.

Ed M.

Yelp
Very goos sushi. Salmon & Unagi were excellent. The rice was adequate. Prices a bit high

C C.

Yelp
Quite possibly the worst spicy tuna I've ever had. Tasted like chemicals. Shrimp tempura was good tho. Won't be back.

Tara O.

Yelp
Really great sushi! You can always tell when it's fresh ingredients and theirs was amazing. Placed my order by phone and they had it ready fast. Very nice staff and they gave a discount for paying cash vs credit.

Chris S.

Yelp
This would be a 4 except for two problems: 1. They don't serve alcohol. I always have a Kirin or Sapporo with my sushi. Big disappointment. 2. Hand rolls were not very generous Besides this, an immaculate and sushi bar with great sushi and excellent service. Also, California rolls and wasabi were not visually as appealing. Tasted great though.

Arty P.

Yelp
I've been eating at/from Dozo since they opened. The last two meals were sloppy with chincy portions. The Sushi rolls only had seaweed covering the top so when we picked up the pieces the thinly sliced roll pieces fell apart. Thinking it was just a bad night, we had the Omikase the following week. It was the same thing - small portions, sloppy cooking and poor presentation. The girls at the front counter are easy to deal with. However, I don't think I am inclined to go back any time soon.

Eugenta B.

Yelp
The food here is soooo good! The quality is great, the presentation is great and they are really nice. Their curbside pick up is safe and efficient. I found this gem a few months ago after having some really bad experiences at other sushi spots. This is my new go to spot.

Alex P.

Yelp
Last week I found this restaurant on Yelp but instead we ate at Zen Japanese on Eisenhower Parkway. Wow, what a difference, I don't plan on ever visiting Zen again.....Dozo is a really good Sushi restaurant in the area. It is located where the old Chef Wong II used to be, they spruced up the decor a little bit and converted to a sushi place, but don't be deceived by the OK decor and atmosphere. The quality and presentation of the sushi are one of the better ones in the area, not as good as Manhattan quality but very good.

Jennilyn F.

Yelp
I got the two roll lunch special for takeout. They're very friendly, the food tasted fresh. I got a salmon avocado roll and an eel avocado roll. The lunch special includes miso soup and a salad. I asked for spicy mayo when I got there. They told me it costs extra, but didn't charge me this time. They also gave me 15%. Parking is a little difficult in this area though. The parking lot gets filled up quickly. And the rolls come with 8 pieces each, instead of 6. I'm probably going back next week.

David S.

Yelp
I have eaten here there times so far and the only reason is because Dozo is great. Dozo is great for all the right reasons. The food is fresh and delicious. The menu is quite diverse in both sushi/sashimi and kitchen items. The fish is incredibly delicious and on par with some of my favorite and most frequented Japanese restaurants. The sashimi is always my benchmark and Dozo has exceeded my expectations. Next is the service. Exceptional because they are friendly and willing to please from the moment we walk in until the moment we leave. Service can sometimes be the ruination of an otherwise good meal. Dozo gets high marks for service. Lastly it's convenient. Who doesn't love someplace convenient close to home. Livingston Is a tough town for restaurants. Many come and go without longevity. That may be good or bad depending on your point of view however if Dozo continues at their current pace they will have a long future here in Livingston. They Such a treat!

Michelle L.

Yelp
Have been going here for sushi when I'm feeling it and my husband wants a hot dish. I'm really into their spicy tuna pizza - it's full of mango and spicy tuna on a scallion pancake topped with spicy mayo. It's one of my favorites. I'm also a big fan of their godzilla roll - simple and full of spicy tuna topped with avocado. They are one of the few places that carry shrimp shumai, which I really dig. I also like their loose rolls like the spicy tuna with cucumber. I do find the miso soup a tad too salty. Their hot dishes are also good - the general tso's is one of my husband's favorites. It's crispy but not overdone and has a lot of orange flavor. Sometimes the wait here is a little long for takeout and it can turn in to a bit of a mad house during weekend peak hours, but all in all, good service and the orders have always been served correctly. I've dined here too - it's fine, nothing to write home about, but good if you're looking to sit and relax for a bit for lunch or dinner.
