On the Grid : Dr. Bombay's Underwater Tea Party

"Remember Dr. Bombay, that therapist you used to go to who made you feel nuttier than ever? Well, this is the teashop he opened when he quit his practice. Or at least that’s what you might imagine when you walk into this eclectic space, which looks like a well-traveled, tchotchke-loving, aging intellectual’s living room. Choose from a variety of English-style teas (complete with the requisite scones and clotted cream), or order coffee, tea, pastries, and other rotating menu items a la carte. Proceeds from the sales of tea and used books benefit owner Katrell Christie’s charitable organization “The Learning Tea,” which provides scholarships and other support to impoverished young women in Darjeeling. Fun fact: Dr. Bombay’s is co-owned by “97.1 The River” DJ English Nick." - Rogers Eckersley Design

Best Places to Drink Tea in Atlanta | Eater Atlanta

"This charming Grant Park spot has it all: tea, coffee, books, pastries, and plenty of quiet nooks for reading or working. The afternoon tea here is one of the most affordable in town at $26.50 per person. The tea includes a pot of tea and a three-tiered tray with pastries and finger sandwiches. Check out Dr. Bombay’s philanthropic arm called “the Learning Tea” with monthly programs benefitting scholarships for women in India." - Eater Staff

Dr. Bombay’s Underwater Tea Party – Atlanta, Georgia - Gastro Obscura

"When patrons order coffee or tea from Dr. Bombay’s Underwater Tea Party, a teashop in Atlanta’s Candler Park village, they don’t just leave caffeinated—they walk away knowing their purchase helped educate, clothe, and empower women in Darjeeling, India. Through the Learning Tea—a scholarship program initiated by Dr. Bombay’s owner—a portion of all the shop’s sales benefit women who age out of orphanages and cannot afford to pursue an education. Every year, up to 12 women receive scholarships covering their living, school, and medical expenses. Dr. Bombay’s also hosts monthly private Indian dinners; 100 percent of those proceeds support the Learning Tea as well. The names of loose-leaf tea tins for sale poignantly drive home this mission: A Darjeeling black tea is named “I Am 17 School Lunches,” and an Assam tea’s label reads “I Am 5 Pairs of Shoes,” for example. Philanthropy aside, there are plenty of reasons—sweet, savory, and literary—to visit Dr. Bombay’s. The menu includes ice cream, sandwiches, quiche, samosas, and an assortment of baked goods. Used books fill floor-to-ceiling cases and are available for one dollar each. Groups of up to 20 can reserve the cafe’s whimsical piano room for High Tea, which consists of hot tea and dainty snacks served on vintage china. The snack assortment consists of scones, clotted cream, jam, quiche, and finger sandwiches, punctuated with a serving of sorbet. The shop’s unique decor could keep patrons gazing for hours while they sit in funkily upholstered armchairs. Paper lanterns, upside-down parasols, origami cranes, and wooden bird cages hang from the ceiling, while vintage paintings cover the walls, making Dr. Bombay’s a colorful place to both eat well and do good. Know Before You Go As of August 2022, Dr. Bombay’s is open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Limited parking spaces along the front of the Candler Park village serve all those businesses’ customers. Street parking can be snagged on Brooks and Page avenues as well as Clifton Road." - bobbelangelo

Dr. Bombay’s Underwater Tea Party - Review - Reynoldstown - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"This bookshelf-lined Candler Park cafe is kind of like entering a real life Mad Hatter’s tea party. It’s technically more of a tea house than coffee shop, but if you’re looking to sit and sip a hot beverage, whether tea or coffee, in an antique armchair under a paper lantern and umbrella-covered ceiling, this is the best (and probably only) spot to go. You can also call ahead for a proper high tea reservation to get the full treatment, which includes tiered trays of scones, clotted cream, jam, quiche, and finger sandwiches followed by a tasting of sorbet. Ask yourself or your friends some unanswerable questions and stay a while." - Neal Cohen

I enjoyed the decor but otherwise this was a disappointing experience for afternoon tea. I've been to afternoon tea at a variety of places across the US and overseas, because I love afternoon tea so much, and I was excited that with their move to Grant Park, I'd have a tea place closer to home. But I won't be returning here. The staff was very nice, but rarely visible. Most tables hadn't been fully set when we arrived. Silverware and napkins didn't arrive until after the tea and food. And the food took about 15-20 minutes after the seating time to come out. The tea was tightly bagged so it took several minutes after the pot arrived for it to steep to an acceptable strength (although still weak-- I think more tea leaves were needed for the amount of water). There is only one type of tea offered so if you need an herbal or non-black tea, you're out of luck. Food looked and tasted like it'd come from a grocery store bakery. Edible but nothing special and definitely not worth the price. I'd say, if you want a tea party for little girls or if you've never had an afternoon tea experience, Dr. Bombay's may be okay, although I'd still expect the execution to be better. But if you care about good food and good tea, there are more worthwhile places around.

I will start with this location is great, and the space was really cute. Everything was served in vintage dish ware and the furniture was shabby chic. I think for the price, it was a little underwhelming. If you were to bring your little kid here, it would be a perfect little tea party for them. I’ve had high tea in London, so I know it’s not really fair to compare, but I was expecting a little bit more. For the service: the staff was really nice and helpful when choosing the tea. Water wasn’t offered until well into the service and I had to ask for milk for my tea. Not a huge deal. The staff was super friendly though, and it was a busy day. For the tea and treats: there was a large selection of teas. I thought my tea was a bit weak. I’m used to loose leaf tea, but I understand that it can be messy and most Americans are used to bagged tea, which is fine. It could also have been the variety I chose. I went with herbal, and you need a lot more tea to get it steeped right. I bet a black tea would have been nice and strong and there were over four black tea varieties. The sandwiches and scones were delicious. Clotted cream is super hard to get in the states, so there was a tasty homemade whipped cream instead. I thought the cookies were a little stale and very comparable to something I would get at the supermarket. I also thought there would be more variety of treats and sandwiches on the tray. I think I will give it another try because I love the concept and love supporting small businesses. It also could have been the day that I was there as it was a busy Saturday.

While the decor was quaint, it felt like I was having tea in the middle of a children's playground. I understand that businesses cannot always choose their clientele, but a suggestion would be to have time slots for kids to enjoy and time slots for adults only. Also, closing off the play area to the cafe customers may help. The food was cheap and mediocre at best. For $50+, this was ridiculously overpriced. The sandwich for example, had about a tablespoon of pimento cheese and two pieces of bread. For ~$100 spent for two people, I feel like the value of the food and tea should have been $20/person maximum. The service was not great as well. There was only one person working as the server for the entire room. I don't think it was her fault, as she seemed to be doing the best she could. For high tea and especially at this price point, we expected a better experience. We will not be returning customers.

Came here because the photos on Google look so cute, and I thought they had a pretty good deal on the afternoon tea set. The vibe: was super cute and relax, perfect place to hang out and chat, or read a book. Service: We waited around 10 minutes before anyone came out from the kitchen to greet us. We got the Caroline and was informed after paying that the price went up from $20-$23 ( the price list on the wall wasn't updated ). They charged $1 for honey but also informed me that AFTER paying! Honey should be complimentary for tea! The food: When the plate arrived, the food looked like they were thrown onto the plate. They couldn't use a nice tray or the tier tray? The food unfortunately looked nothing like the photos, were pretty unappetizing and did not taste good. Everything was dry , stale. The quiche looks like it was more like a flat bread and old. The cream & jelly were missing from the set. We didn't realize that until we finished the set. The tea pot was tea bags , I was expecting loose leaf tea for the tea set. It was truly a disappointment 😞 Overall it's not a spot I would revisit, Esp with so many options in Atlanta

Had high tea here and it was horrible. More like low tea. We paid $58 for two sandwich's made on stale bread. . The quiche was a size of a quarter and had no crust. And the scones were hard and Burt. The quality of the food was very poor. I had to ask twice for a cup that was not chipped. I eventually received a coffee cup. The tea was served in a metal old dented tea pot with a led that didn’t close. . Absolutely nothing special about this place. Don’t waste your money and time. If you want a real traditional high tea go somewhere else.

I’ve traveled many places over the last 10 years and make a point to find at least one tea room to enjoy a pot of tea. Unfortunately, this is on the lesser enjoyable experiences. Food: sub par at best, nothing stood out as good or bad. Tea: there are no tea options, just one. Thankfully, I am a fan of the only option available, however I do enjoy a variety of teas and flavors. Also, the water was mildly warm and had to wait over 10 mins for a good steep. Service: no one was present to greet me. There was one person working for a full room. Not enough attention provided for each table. Atmosphere: I was expecting more based on photos, however it was dark, crowded and sat at table by the bookshelf staring at blankets of dust. Also found it very distracting and disrupting to have patrons from the cafe next door using the space for their children to play and run around. I would also recommend an adults only tea time.

My daughter did a tea party here for her 5th birthday. They had a amazing time. I loved the clotted cream.

Way overpriced for high tea. Went with a group and ended up paying over $40 per person for a cup of black tea, half a pimento cheese sandwich and a small brownie. Admittedly, I can’t eat egg so I didn’t have as many options as everyone else and they don’t do dietary accommodations but still only worth max $20 per person in my opinion. Staff were friendly and nice and the food I did have was tasty. Just can justify spending that much and then going home hungry.
