Best Restaurants in Raleigh, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Humble Pie’s patio is the place to go for a sip in the sun and a small plate. The vibe is casual and the expectation is to share, whether a visitor fancies tater tots to plunge into smoky pimento cheese or pork belly sliders with hoisin barbecue and scallions." - Katie Toussaint

Excellent pizza and local beer. Staff is very friendly and willing to let us customize ( 1/2 and 1/2) so we can try different things. Wings were good as well. It is like NY style but not greasy. I'm picky with my pizza but this is perfect! Definitely come back. Mind you, it is very busy but worth the wait. We were lucky, we got in right away.

Went here when I was hankering for some pizza on my trip to Monticello and the reviews for Dr. Ho’s were very, very positive. I got there on a late Saturday afternoon after a basketball game at the local college, so it was very, very busy. So I sat at the bar. The bartender was very attentive and friendly. I ordered my pie, meatballs, button mushrooms, & pepperoni. It arrived pretty quick and it was perfectly cooked with a very good, lightly salted chewy crust. The toppings were all delicious, as was the sauce. I can see why they get the good reviews. I left with half the pizza in a box, and I can tell you that I ate it cold for breakfast the next day and it was still a super good pizza.

Google
I live in Charlottesville and my goodness did this place become my go-to. They have a ton of great pizza and salad options, I got the one that had pineapple, buffalo sauce, and jalapeños and I will definitely get that again. Also, you HAVE to get a side of ranch with your pizza, best ranch in Charlottesville. The only downside is that it’s so popular that there may be a wait, but it’s worth it.

Google
OMG!!! This place is the spot to go to when you want a real good pie, pizza that is! Plus the salads and subs are also great! Brook our waitress was awesome! We seem to get her every time we visit and she is so sweet! The atmosphere is a funky vibe kind of like a bar setting but very much family friendly. We highly recommend this place! I almost forgot the homemade Ranch Dressing! You gotta try the Ranch Dressing!

Google
This place was hopping! Clearly very popular with locals, as people were frequently coming in to pick up take out pizza. We had to wait about 30 minutes before we could get seated. Service was quick and friendly. There was a wide variety of pizzas and ours came out quickly, and was hot and delicious! They have a nice selection of wine, beer and cider. Save room for dessert because there are some great options.

Google
Food is always amazing and great/kind customer service, lucky to have a great option just a short drive away. Have some regular favorites, but always make sure to check the weekly pizza and salad specials for some awesome creations. Have found the seasonal fig pizza special to be one to look forward to every fall, along with other interesting ones like the blue cheese and grape pizza being something that is unexpected but perfect. Love the inclusion of local produce they use when possible.

Google
Absolutely delicious! Staff was friendly and our waitress was phenomenal! Nothing like any pizza I've ever had and I mean that in a good way. Completely unique flavor and idea definitely had me happy!

Google
Of course we had to try the pizza! I loved how you could have half the pizza one specialty and the other another. We tried Popeye and Italian Stallion. Delicious!! The Mediterranean salad and homemade vinaigrette was fresh and tasty. The steak Philly Cheese steak sandwich was loaded with meat. Last, but not least, the Dr. Ho's Orange Chicken was amazing. You can't go wrong with anything off the menu!!!!

Yelp
Great food, great people, great part of the community. We have been happy customers since they opened.

Yelp
Known for their specialty pizzas, my wife and decided to try the Italian Stallion-awesome food. Service was fast and friendly and helpful in picking a great Za! Happy Hour forced us to get a few drafts with dinner. Ambiance is retro gas station which really works for this local restaurant.

Yelp
For what it's worth, I could see why this is a road tripping favorite. Plenty of seats, nice ambiance, friendly service and homemade ice cream! I think after a long day of driving, I'd probably be happy to eat here too. I unfortunately was staying in the area for a few weeks when I went here and I have to say, I was unimpressed. My pizza was soggy, the service was very slow, the order was delivered wrong twice (the second time we didn't mention it, because it took so long for them to fix the first mistake). By the time my pizza came, I was really hungry, but I think they rushed the bake because as i said, it was very soggy and sloppy and just fell apart in my hand. There were also, weirdly, a ton of flies in the place. They kept trying to land on the food. So overall, not a spot I'd come back to. My search for great food in Charlottesville continues...

Yelp
We were road tripping through the Charlottesville area and Humble Pie appeared on our radar ~ glad we experienced it to-go! Friendly service coupled with delicious pizza and salad. Big thanks for offering a great gluten free crust!

Yelp
My go to pizza spot when I'm in this area. Today I'm getting the Don Juan w/ pepperoni added. Haven't decided on my favorite yet. The Popeye is awesome too. I knew this spot was good when my Italian friend came back for seconds then thirds then came back for the rest of the pizza! Trying the eggplant rollatini today too! Will keep you posted...

Yelp
Sat with Ann at the bar and she was AWESOME!! Great service and fantastic pizza! Place was very busy on a Saturday afternoon. Great place to pop in for a bite, family friendly too.

Yelp
I can't believe I've never reviewed Dr Ho's before! Some of the best pizza ANYWHERE and located in gas station, rural shopping strip. HAHAH! Low key atmosphere with a great assortment of local brews and wine. The food is all outstanding but as I mentioned above, the PIZZA IS AWESOME! Service is alway a joy - Really nice people.

Matt S.

Yelp
This is excellent American supper pizza. No, it's not a New York lunch slice, it's not a Neapolitan, it's not a deep dish, it's not a wood fired beauty, it's not regional speciality like Chicago or Detroit (let's not mention St. Louis or Altoona here, lol). But it doesn't have to be. This pizza was really good and, most importantly, was perfectly proportioned. Most meat pizzas just have too much stuff on them, and turn into a gooey, slippery mess. Dr. Ho's put the right amount of meat, distributed it well across the pizza, and baked it til the crust would hold up under the weight of the toppings. The meatball sub was ok - those meatballs would have been better with some pork mixed in, and instead were a bit stodgy and the sandwich just didn't have enough sauce. The lettuce shrimp roll was a total surprise - nicely cooked, bright-tasting shrimp that we wouldn't have expected from a place like this.

Yelp
We had another enjoyable dinner here! The service was fast and friendly even though it was a busy night! Our food was delivered fast and hot! And so delicious! We ate our fabulous pizza and then took home a quart of the best ranch dressing! It makes an ordinary salad into something you look forward to having!
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
A solid 4/5 pizza. We did takeout and tried the humble pie. Wait time wasn't too bad (15 minutes) considering the restaurant was packed. Surprisingly the ranch was really good here. Elite ranch. If you like ranch with pizza, try it here.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow, what a great surprise! After a long day of travel we were in the mood for pizza. This was the highest Yelp rated pizza in Charlottesville and I can see why! Our waitress was a nice silver-haired lady, we didn't catch her name but she was the best! We ordered the Italian Stallion pie and it was delivered piping hot in about 15 minutes. Perfectly cooked, perfect amount of toppings, and omg the meatballs-delicious! I'm hoping to get back there before we leave the area.

Yelp
Very good pizza ! I saw the sign and turned hard so I didn't miss it! The small pizza was out in about 10 min. The spinach salad had plenty of flavor and I slight heat to it I think from the blue cheese or balsamic drizzle. The candied pecans were a nice touch. Pizza crust was nice and crunchy and I loved the sauce! Great staff how we're patient with my indecisiveness!
google avatar

Melissa J.

Yelp
My husband and I both got strombolis and they were excellent. We went on a Saturday evening, and the restaurant was jamming with customers and a constant stream of takeouts. The wait was a bit long, but worth it as the food was so good.
google avatar

Heather J.

Yelp
Lives up to the hype. Would 100% go back. Their ranch is amazing, get extra you'll need it
google avatar

Yelp
Dr. Ho's is reminiscent of a local pizza place back home in upstate NY. It's got a cult following (and rightfully so), great beer, and even better pizza. Don't sleep on the salads and other menu items. They're large and phenomenal. It can get a bit loud and busy inside, but it adds to the esthetic. They turn the tables over pretty quickly too. We'll see you soon!

Yelp
Delicious pizza and the best ranch dressing! Super cool vibe. Great waitstaff. We built our own pizza with sausage and pepperoni. Had 3-4 pieces left over from 14inch. Just me and my daughter ate so good reference for size to order. We picked up a jar of ranch. They have great deserts and beer and wine to go.
google avatar

Cole M.

Yelp
THE BEST RANCH IN ALL THE LAND. Great stromboli. Hear me out on this one... try it with pepperoni, jalapenos, and goat cheese. Will change your perspective on life. White pizza good too.

Yelp
Friends and I from out of town (Alabama) looking for a good lunch spot. Went to Yelp and this joint popped up. An odd building, however do not judge a book by its cover. The smell of cheese garlic bread hit me as soon as we walked in. 4 of us total enjoyed the Triple Threat Combo ($50) : 1 specialty pizza, 1 cheese garlic bread, and a house salad. The garlic cheese bread is delicious I enjoyed the house salad and house dressing (their ranch is also amazing). The speciality pizza we chose was The Big Schloss - spinach, tomatoes, mushroom, sausage, and white sauce . This pizza was okay - it was slightly watery towards the middle of the pie and I did not enjoy the big chunks of tomato. Plenty of food and we took a lot home. HOWEVER - I think if we would've ordered a different speciality this would have easily been a 5 star review for me. Super nice staff and service was quick for Saturday lunch.

Yelp
An unexpected delight! Several people recommended the pizza so we decided to stop after visiting a winery. The gas station location is a bit of a deterrent, however, this is worth a visit. The service was quick and efficient. In addition to the pizza they are known for their ranch dressing which was really good. A very laid back feel makes this a great stop when visiting Charlottesville.

Yelp
Run, don't walk! This place has been in my collection of bookmarks to try. This past weekend I finally got to it. Man, we're we so happy and full leaving. It was so good! You would miss this place if you weren't paying attention. It's part of a gas station and two level office like building on 29 headed into C'ville. The service and food were both outstanding. People were very nice. We were first timers here so we inquired as to what stands out. The meatball sub was exactly what you want. Hand made meatballs. The fries rock. Oh and they serve draft beer and wine. We got two different pizza. Both were excellent. The crust is addictive dipped in their garlic ranch dressing. The sausage has a little kick to it too. We will most definitely go back sometime soon. Great work folks. Keep doing what you are doing. You rock!

Yelp
We decided to stop here on our way back home from our day in Charlottesville. It has a very homely feel. Our service was great, as our waitress was very nice and attentive. Someone with me had been here before and raves about the calamari, so we wanted to try. Unfortunately, they switch the menu and didn't have the calamari. The mozzarella sticks were really good, and we also ordered some sort of egg rolls. I wasn't a fan, but i just don't really eat stuff like that. The others in the group really liked them. The pizza is huge, even for the smallest portion. Most people probably wouldn't be able to eat it in one sitting. I took some home and tried to eat it again later and it wasn't that great.
google avatar

Yelp
Dr. Ho's Humble Pie is fantastic. The staff and manager were lovely. The pizza was fantastic. I ate a vegan pizza and the vegetables were fresh and seasoned perfectly. Enjoy!
google avatar

Yelp
Huge servings! Huge! I got the beet salad as an appetizer and the southwestern egg rolls as a second appetizer. Was able to make two more meals off of them (definitely would make at least one more for those with bigger appetites). And so delish! Well known throughout Charlottesville and surrounding areas. They let us bring in our own birthday cake! Service is fast and friendly. Considering the portions, prices are very reasonable. Would highly recommend!

Yelp
A hidden gem outside of Charlottesville. It's good, so be prepared to wait for a little bit, but it's well worth it. Pizza is perfect. Nothing we had wasn't excellent. Great small town feel.
google avatar

Rebecca M.

Yelp
This quaint and quite busy little unassuming restaurant is a hidden gem .... after visiting a couple wineries in the area you always need something really good to eat and this is the place to do it boys they have a variety of their menu... And I rarely am a pizza girl but I love this pizza... Be patient because you will have to wait to get seated it doesn't matter what time of day. It is so worth the wait three of us shared the pizza , one had the soup of the day (which was French onion)and one got the cheese steak! The service was fast and friendly and it's a lively place to be! Do yourself a favor go to Dr. Ho's Humble Pie!

Yelp
knew it was the right place to stop as soon as we walked in. packed. quick, friendly host & server. great selection of pie choices. innovative & eclectic. we got 2 different ones, and they were delivered in short order. excellent pizza. thinner crust & thorough topping cover. never expected to find such a quirky, clever place off 29 as we meandered through. kind of typical decor - old signs & odd art, but part of the charm. great stop. we'll do it again.

Yelp
New Yorker brought here by a local and I enjoyed my stay. As a New Yorker, pizza is a somewhat sacred thing and I'm immediately dubious of anything outside my city. That said, we enjoyed Dr. Ho's very much and I expect to return on future visits. We enjoyed the Don Ho, the Italian Stallion, and some dry rub chicken wings. The came came out hot and fresh. The Don Ho, my selection, was pretty cheesy with a nice helping of pineapple. Yes those things balance each other out well. The Italian Stallion was also good. I thought the wings left me wanting a bit more. Overall I got what I expected and enjoyed everything. If I had one criticism, it would be for the crust which tasted like the dollar slice crust back home. The place is warm and inviting, should appeal to everyone -- adults, teens, kids, etc. Service was great, very friendly. Dr. Ho produce better pizza than I was expecting and I'll def be back to try a few more unique pies off their menu.

Yelp
We were greeted and sat quickly by a friendly host and instantly fell in love as we looked around at all of the beautiful pizzas. Our toddler was pretty happy with the food as were we! We dug into our intense nachos which were so filling we knew we'd have some pizza to-go! The ambiance was joyful and the staff was super friendly, too! We were so happy we drove out during our visit to Charlottesville!

Yelp
Finally made it to Dr Hos and it did not disappoint. When we arrived about 6 pm it was hopping but we only had a short wait. We were able to sit on the bench, study the huge menu, watch all the great looking food going by and many families with kids getting take out and sitting and having fun. We got a booth as requested and looked over the beverage list. My husband got a couple of beers, and I settled on ice water. Our waitress was funny, charming and efficient. My husband ordered a custom pizza with whole wheat crust, house made sausage, roasted red peppers, mozzarella cheese, portobello mushrooms and marinara sauce. It was huge and delicious. I avoid gluten and although there was an option for gluten free pizza, I chose the Southwestern salad with shrimp, bacon, hard boiled egg, guacamole, bean and corn salsa, cheese, romaine lettuce and cherry tomatoes. Skipped the tortilla strips due to gluten concern. It was huge and at a very reasonable price. I was unable to eat the whole thing. My husband took half his pizza home. We shall return! There are lots of other great options I would like to try!

Yelp
Big pies, good times. An out-of-the-way place that's worth the effort to drive rather than stay home and get delivery. Recommendations: Fat N Sassy garlic bread, Champignon pizza, Pot de Creme (I don't see it on the menu right now - bring them back please!!) A lot of the pizzas can be made split by type half and half. Great for trying new things or couples who can't agree. Loads of toppings, so when it's fresh from the over you might have to resort to using a knife and fork.
google avatar

Wolf P.

Yelp
Delicious pizza combinations. The crust, oh the crust! So crispy and perfect for supporting as many toppings as your heart desires. Friendly service and the perfect pizza spot to hit after a day of drinking wine at the local wineries.
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
Great pizza, including some creative combos. Also, first-rate salad options, with homemade dressings. And the yummiest desserts, including ice creams made on the premises. This place has been a local institution for years, and its popularity is richly deserved.
google avatar

Matthew F.

Yelp
Dr. Ho's is an old-school sit-down pizza joint with a lot of options. A favorite past-time among pizza lovers is to debate who is better; Dr. Ho's or Crozet Pizza. I say get them both. I started off with analysis paralysis but once I discovered their Annie Oakly - a mix of jalapeno, spicy buffalo chicken, and pineapple - I was hooked. It was too much for one sitting so I had the rest boxed up to go. I gave this place 5 stars five years ago, and happily do so again.
google avatar

Phil E.

Yelp
Fun place Great server Super tasty food Very reasonable prices Lots of choices of food and drink One recommendation pass on the sweet tea. It was very weak and not very sweet.
google avatar

Mel L.

Yelp
Called ahead and ordered takeout for a family of 5. Customer service both over the phone and during pickup were great! Very welcoming, funny and personable! Ambience on a Friday night was B U S Y! Glad we got takeout, but this must be THE spot in town. The main reason we didn't eat inside was because we had just got into town and wanted to relax at our AirBnB. Food was delicious! We got spicy fried calamari, Jack London Pizza, Humble Pie Pizza, Mediterranean salad, and the southwestern shrimp Cobb salad... everything was soooooo good! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Dale G.

Yelp
First time there. Loved the pizza. Definitely our go to from now on. Sat at the bar and the waitress was great. She was attentive, funny and generous letting us taste a wine before purchase and also giving us dipping sauce for pizza crust. We'd sit at the bar again ! Thank you
google avatar

Jimmy S.

Yelp
This is one of the best pizza restaurants in central Virginia. They have a large selection of deliciousness and the customer service is top notch. We got the Jack London and man did that hit the spot. I added black olives to half and they accidentally added it to the whole pizza, so they made an additional pizza for us, even though we were ok with first one. That is the kind of customer service that endears customers and keeps them coming back.
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
Dr. Ho's is an institution! Recently visited and everything was delicious, especially the seafood dip. Get there early on a busy night as there might be a wait, and definitely try dessert.
google avatar

Yelp
I am giving Dr. Ho's 5 stars because it was pretty much what I was expecting from the reviews. It looks like they decorated with American Pickers. Clean, nice, updated place. Really nice server guy, I did not catch his name unfortunately. I did not take any food pictures either. My friend lives in Crozet and I am moving out that way from Richmond. I wanted to try Ho's. I had a two hearted ale from my home state. We split a large spinach salad that had candied pecans, dried cherries or cranberries, mild blue cheese and a great balsamic. We both really like that salad. I got half Jack London, half Italian Stallion. That was a great pizza. We ate what we could and shared with a friend we met on the way to the house. She ate the pizza in the back seat as we drove out in Roseland and was making tasty noises. Server dude was great, service was great, food was great, scenery was great, rest of the beautiful Sunday was great.... GREAT!
google avatar

Justin N.

Yelp
If you're not hip to Dr. Ho's, this is a place you knead-to-know about! It's my new favorite American-style pizza place in Charlottesville. Shared a 16-inch half Jack London, half The Heavy Hand with my friend. The portion is pretty good for the price. The pizza has a really nice and thin crust; however, this also lends itself to folding under the more topping-heavy pizzas. The inside of the restaurant is fun. I'm interested in going back to try other pizzas, entrees, and desserts!
google avatar

Danielle E.

Yelp
Dr. Ho's is such a unique place! It's out in an area where there isn't much besides wineries, but it's absolutely worth the trip. I had the cheesy garlic "bread" (it was a whole pizza!) and my partner had the hot Italian sub. Both were delicious and were enough food for us to take home for another meal. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Sara L.

Yelp
Pro tip - pick up a pizza here before/in the middle of winery hopping, keep it in the car for snacking, and thank me later. Coming here was the best decision my fiance and I made yesterday. We got the 14" make your own pie with ground beef, tomatoes, and caramelized onions. The crust was perfection - thin and crispy with flavor. They were generous with the toppings too. We were told it would be about a 20 minute wait for our pizza but it took maybe 15 minutes. Only a couple of other groups were ahead of us on a Saturday afternoon, so they werent too busy. We had such a great experience picking up our pizza here for our wine day, we've decided this should be a thing from now on.
google avatar

Tony H.

Yelp
Can't argue with previous 5 star reviews. Kind of a local "mellow Mushroom" vibe for ambiance. Place packed on a Friday. Great pizza, fast service for how busy they were. I'll be back.
google avatar

Parker H.

Yelp
5 stars, 5 stars, 5 stars. Can't recommend this spot enough. The food is amazing and had the best pizza in town, maybe in the region. The service is great and the food doesn't take forever. The waiters are friendly and do their job professionally. The atmosphere and energy in the restaurant is fantastic. The ambiance reminds me of going to dinner with your family on vacation and you find a really good local spot. I would definitely recommend this place. Also I heard this place makes amazing ranch.
google avatar

Kerri E.

Yelp
This is attached to a gas station and could easily be missed. We had a large group of 13 and they don't take reservations. They were easily able to accommodate us and the server was amazing. We ordered a Mediterranean salad and Italian sub. Both were excellent. There were 4 pizzas at the table and they also looked delicious. They have beer, wine, soft drinks and tea.

Ls N.

Yelp
Best for a big group. Lots of noise and kids. Ask them to cook your pizza a little more because the toppings can be runny. Nice selection and variety on the menu. Homemade sauces!
google avatar

Ahyeahson O.

Yelp
This place is the best and the ownership here is top-notch! We are here almost 3 times a month and every time is consistently good. Take out doesn't take long and always ready when they say it will be. Just wish they had a location closer to where we live.

David B.

Yelp
First trip to this area. Went looking for pizza and parking. Ended up at Dr. HO's. Place was busy but we were seated in 15 minutes. Server had great suggestions for us. Crab dip and pizza were both amazing. Stay for the Humble Pie or skip the meal and just eat the Humble Pie. We have been back twice in 5 days. Don't miss out. Spicy Orange Chicken was great. Step out of your comfort zone and try anything on their menu

Yelp
Always a great of stop! Mike does a good job mixing up! Great sandwiches and pizza! Certainly in the middle of nowhere! Waitress are extremely chill! Very casual! Food good !
