Go to for the gourmand. The selection is incredible. Deli counter and sandwiches are superb. Bakery is beautiful, bountiful, and beckons sweet teeth. The service is fantastic. The house goods and gifts upstairs are wonderful. Accessible ♿️entrance. There is an elevator to go up and down stairs to the bathroom and the kitchen goods area. Several accessible parking spots. Right downtown. Easy access by bus. Maybe 7 blocks to Caltrain station.

I returned from a trip to find this Draeger's was closing and everything was on sale. The sale had already been on for 10 days and when I got to the store almost every shelf was empty. I did manage to find 2 items to buy. I was excited to find Edy's ice cream bars. When I got home and went to open the box I was shocked to see the best by date to be 9 months past. Inside the box each bar was caked with ice. It was despicable that they used this store closing to sell something that should have been discarded.

Amazing selection of grocery items. Fresh veggies, meats, and seafood. Impressive selection of red wine, white wine, beer, and spirits. Hot foods and bakery products are also outstanding. Small parking lot on street level, but there’s a large underground parking lot as well.

Google
My partner and I absolutely LOVE Draeger’s, we come here every week for fresh produce and hard to find specialty foods. We are devastated this location will be closing this spring. We sincerely hope Draeger’s will consider reopening in a different location here in San Mateo. Please come back!

Google
I really enjoy shopping at Draegers. Even the meat department. The employees are classy and friendly too. They have alot of international products too like candies from England. It's a pleasure to shop there.

Google
Surprise cakes for birthday.Whipping cream or butter cream on top was not good at all,not frash.Chocolate cake and lemon cake were so so dry. they were not edable at all.Cakes / texture inside don't get dry out the next day. it takes days to reach to that stage.I felt bad for the person who bought the cake from here.

Google
Besides an amazing array of fresh flowers (some I've never, ever seen in my life) they have every yummy thing you could ever imagine. An outstanding choice of artisanal cheeses and salamis - as well as - ice cream from small Mom & Pop shops in the bay area. It's not cheap but it is worth it. Looking for a Welsh Cheddar with Scallions in it? They've got it. Want a spicy soprasatta that will knock your socks off? They've got it. Specialty Apricot jam from Italy? They've got that, too!! Go, you're gonna love it!

Google
Good looking supermarket. Inventory was well organised. Vast variety of fresh, frozen & canned products. Flowers kitchen ware, etc. All that you need day to day. $$$

Yelp
I have so many fond memories of this store!! I know it sounds weird to say about a grocery store, but I've catered endless events from here, and hosted so many dinners at Viognier (their upscale restaurant). And of course, shopping splurges for fancy kitchenware was always a fun treat. For details on what I loved so much about this store, see my original review! Unfortunately, this store will be permanently closing. The closing was originally planned for March, but inside word is that it may close possibly as soon as this weekend. So if you want to visit one last time, get in here asap! The shelves are practically empty now, but there were crazy long lines when they started their discount sale. It was great fun while it lasted!

Yelp
Sad to hear they are closing down this location (in February). Discounted 30-50% off everything except for their bakery, deli, See's Candies, and some other things. Our friends introduced us to Draegar's Apple Pie (4/5). Oh wow, that was so good. The crust is one of the best crusts I've ever tasted. Flakey, buttery, and a nice crunch. The apples were soft yet still had that nice firmness and was perfectly paired with the cinnamon and sugar spices. Not too sugary sweet but just the perfect amount!Delicious! We'll miss you.

Karen X.

Yelp
I can't speak for any other product at this market/bakery except the mixed berry pie. It is the most amazing thing ever. They filling is sweet and tart and the crust is buttery and delicious. If you in the area, stop by and grab a pie!

Rosmond P.

Yelp
As we were driving by, we saw this place. We love it a lot. Every time we come to visit San Mateo we stop here and look at the seasonal items along with the decorations that they have everywhere. upstairs, they have what you need to cook with such as cookware and display items and also a nice kitchen area where they have cooking classes and presentations.

Michael L.

Yelp
Large market offering a wide array of European items in particular. Pricing is on the higher side but the products are definitely of high quality and hard to find elsewhere. Big fan of the pastry section (see Tiramisu in Chocolate Shell photo attached)

Cynthia M.

Yelp
Nice market with a huge international section. Sending had home goods and stuff animals! Service was very helpful.

Dianna W.

Yelp
We visited the branch in San Mateo . It is clean and organized with many good quality of food . We have ordered and mango mousse cake for birthday . It is nicely decorated with a buttery with peal colors beads on it . The words are written in chocolate that add to the taste of the mango mousse cake . The texture is like a bouncy jello , rich and creamy . Wonderful combination!

Benny W.

Yelp
This is a big supermarket with two levels. They have two parking lots. There's one on street level and the other one is located below the supermarket. There are plenty of parking spots. This supermarket is kind of like a bigger version of Whole Foods. It's very clean and items were neatly stocked. They have a floral department with huge varieties of beautiful flowers. The bakery had cupcakes, cookies, whole cakes, chocolate by the pound, and lots of yummy baked goods. The meat department had different cuts of beef, chicken, pork, and seafood for sale. This market have huge selections of booze. You can find cheap ones to higher end ones. They also have a huge variety of tea including loose tea leaves. If you're a chocolate lover, you will definitely find your favorite chocolate bars here. They sold food that were made locally and from international as well. There's something for everyone in this big supermarket. It was our first time there and we spent a long time in there. We didn't anticipate on buying much there, but ended up buying a shopping cart full of groceries. The cashier and the bagger were very friendly and we chatted a little bit. We didn't have time to go upstairs. This will be a good excuse to come back to shop here. We also want to try their made to order burgers and cakes as well.

Grace M.

Yelp
I like to tell my friends this place is like if a Whole Foods allowed junk food + a specialty market. Here you'll find- prepared foods, deli, cheese, olive bar, bakery, huge selection of wines, and much more. Great spot to dawdle around in and check out new foods to try. Be careful however I did find several yogurts that were expired for a few days still on their shelves. (Lost a star for this) They have their own parking lot and in the heart of downtown San Mateo.

Marcy M.

Yelp
Thank you Draeger's of San Mateo. We loved you and appreciated you. Your commitment to high-quality, healthy foods, beautiful china, essential cooking wares and all things valuable and/or tasty raised the standards for the Peninsula. So very sorry to see you go...

Erich L.

Yelp
Huge grocery store and one of a few locations in the area. They have the best selection for everything and have a great selection of organic and other products. The staff are always very friendly and helpful at Draegers. Excellent place to shop. Everything is very organized and clean.

Jerry H.

Yelp
Really sad Draeger's is leaving San Mateo. Great grocery store, little pricey but it's worth it. Their cakes are next level. Just got the chocolate cake for a birthday and no one could resist. Consistent service and very clean grocery store.

Mitzi M.

Yelp
Wonderful specialty market with amazing bakery, food choices and great customer service!

Pree K.

Yelp
This review is specifically for the bakery. Though things are pricey, the baked goods are fantastic. We got a cake here that was just absolutely delicious - raspberry almond. The texture and appearance were flawless, and the taste was delicious. Loved this cake!

Peter W.

Yelp
This location is on a downhill slide. My first time here was around the year 2000. It was a pristine grocery store. Now, when you walk in, there's a very, very slight fog. Everything has a grey gradient or spots on it. The soup counter is an atrocity. The pastries are flat. There used to be a professional-level fluffiness similar to a well-made soufflé. The café area is pure torment. The underground parking is dangerous now. The upstairs area no longer carries merchandise with any turnover. Fruits are bruised and sticky sugar is everywhere. The frozen food sections smell and have a grey dirt mist around it. It's emblematic of the downtown San Mateo area, which wasn't that nice to begin with. This was a 5-star place: you're getting the benefit of the doubt.

Edward M.

Yelp
A great supermarket! Quality items including produce, meat, bakery items and even flowers. I have been traveling here once a month from SF for probably twenty years as a treat to myself. Best store deli. This high end store is closing in Feb 2025 and I will miss it. I wish, beg and hope that the Draeger ownership and family would consider opening another mid peninsula store or even come to SF. Going to miss you. San Mateo has lost Trags and now Draegers.

Ricca Cathrina E.

Yelp
Love the location. We usually go to the Danville location and it was our first time here. Food items as expected are great! However not much was left at the pastry section since it was almost the end of the day. Service was awesome! Glad to have chances upon the market on our way back home.

r t.

Yelp
Yes, it's more money but you get what you pay for. Foods and items are always high quality and store always clean and pleasant to be in. Staff are helpful and courteous. I'm already sad that they'll be closing sometime in the coming year or two.

lis l.

Yelp
You'd think in California every item would be available when needed... not at all! After a frustrating search for a simple Angel food cake I called Draeger's. I called and they not only had it but no crowds, super helpful clerks and a great angel food.

Sam L.

Yelp
my tongue has been screwed with USA's coffees. ONE afternoon I walked in Draeger's & the cappuccino was ILLY's. Price was also a consideration. Why no 5 star, i ordered their best steak during the 2021 pandemic & price charged per lbs was much more.

John T.

Yelp
Went to Draegers to get 4 shrimp...I did not want pre cleaned shrimp. I asked the butcher to please shell and devein them for me please. He told me NO you can buy the already cleaned, I replied I don't want those I want these...he then adamantly, refused to shell and devein four shrimp. I mentioned any good butcher would gladly provide the service, he basically said F No... I thought this was a full service butcher shop...guess not. The butcher or want to be butcher was the rudest individual I've ever had the displeasure of be served by. I told he to keep the shrimp I'll go to Piazza and they will clean and devein the shrimp with no attitude.

Rosemary W.

Yelp
Absolutely dismal service when we went to get coffee and dessert Zombie like service and another going out for her smoke I was going to buy a cake but when I saw the lack of hygiene :ABSOLUTELY NO !!

Connie L.

Yelp
I ordered mini cupcakes and a brownie assortment for a reunion celebration and from the time I ordered to the time I picked up the customer service was wonderful. Katrina and Haifa helped with the order and were nothing short of amazing. What great customer service the San Mateo Draegers bakery provides. Thank you so much Katrina and Haifa - the desserts were delicious and everyone loved them.

Kim G.

Yelp
Overall never had a bad experience here, always pleasant from the Wine Sommelier, the butcher, the bakery staff, to the cash register attendants. Everyone are quite pleasant and helpful. The upstairs people in the kitchen gadgets and household goods could improve on customer service, felt unwelcome at times when I came upstairs to purchase gift items. Other than that Anna, in the bakery area is so awesome! She's super cool!

Shane S.

Yelp
Great gourmet upscale supermarket in San Mateo. This is a foodie heaven for those in the Bay Area that appreciate good food. I am Italian heritage. I have been to Italy to visit my brother who used to live there and have been to many farmer's markets from here's to there's yet never have seen so many olive oils in one location. They had literally two full aisles of olive oils from Italy to local to organic to this and to that. Staff is friendly. There are two stores. The salad bar albeit costly is dialed with whole avocados and many other interesting items. I love the books on the second floor everything from creative artistic books to solid cooking books. Recommended if in the area!

Kathy G.

Yelp
So cute and so expensive!! everything was so so lovely. Go upstairs to see the displays. Enjoy a dessert. They are so pretty!

Calyse M.

Yelp
The soups are really good here Very nice employees Good variety on drinks I really enjoy the grilled chicken with wild rice very tasty

Patrick S.

Yelp
Stop by Draeger's San Mateo to buy a Christmas log. The service was nice and fast and friendly. The Christmas log looked good. When dessert time come, we cut the log, From there disappointment, started to look like cheap stuff. When we start to eat everyone looking at each other kind of saying what that. The sponge chocolate cake was very dry and not roll, the butter cream was more like a chocolate mousse. No one finished their part. I don't know who teach them how to make Christmas log. But that was a bad experience at Draeger's For the price the quality could be a lot better.

Alex K.

Yelp
Have to update my last review. The store may look nice but for overpriced items I better not find BUGS crawling on them. They currently have danishes in their pastry case and you can literally see the bugs crawling on them (for some reason I can't add my video on this review but please look in the gallery for it). Disgusting. Have to totally reconsider shopping for anything here now.

Mariam P.

Yelp
My family went to get pastries and coffee and was dismayed by the quality. I expected better from this chain that markets itself in the upscale market. Had an almond croissant that was rubbery and not flaky crispy like a croissant should be. The service was minimal had to ask for basics because their water container was empty, no napkins and a bit if an attitude from the attendant each time I asked for something that wasn't offered. My husband hated the coffee was semi burnt taste. Do not recommend you shop for pastries or coffee here..... instead head out the a new pastry shop that just opened up in Burlingame next to the old most famous pastry place on the Burlingame main shopping area... the name escapes me but its small and french.

Christine H.

Yelp
This is literally the most magical supermarket that I've ever been to. If you thought Whole Foods was something, you should probably check out Draeger's. Draeger's is definitely on the pricier end, but it prides itself in offering gourmet food options (and it's no lie). Just looking at their chocolates, meat, or produce sections, I was impressed. There are so many options, and everything is high-quality. I was even more amazed at their flower selection. They might as well run their own flower street cart. They also sell your more common brands for things like alcoholic drinks, snacks, and hygiene items. Oh and I almost forgot, but check out their wines (and vinegars, yes vinegars) cause you gonna be amazed. Besides food and everyday items, it also has an area upstairs where you can explore stationery items, candles, and other small gifts. Next to this area are dishware and other kitchen items. I don't know much about the adjoining are, but they seem to offer cooking classes as well. All in all, you'd probably go to Draeger's not just to buy things you need but for the experience (at least for a country mouse like me)

Michelle P.

Yelp
Draegers is not our most local store - we come here mostly for the bakery, and a few specialty items like Vinegar de Banyuls, etc - I'm not stoked on their butcher, the last few times I was there, it was not organized wait-wise and people were being helped without acknowledgment of who was there first. Annoying. I walked away and went to Piazza's instead, where the customers are more polite and the butchers ask for next in line. In the bakery area, we love the bread selection and cake selection - our go to is the raspberry Amand cake (Sp?) - it seems to please everyone. The latest we lurches were the macarons for my sons 16th birthday - two of each flavor available - ends up the baker went to the refrigerator and retrieved the macarons?! Got them home with a piece of mango mousse cake in which to put a candle - the mousse cake was nice but the macarons were horrible! They didn't have much flavor, save for the raspberry - but even so, they were just horrible, tasted mostly like refrigerator. Ayayayay I don't think they should be selling these - we were so disappointed. Better to travel all of the way to Chantal Guillon. Well at least my son had the slice of mousse cake to enjoy. I'm still giving Draegers 4 stars becasue the rest of their bakery good have been awesome, and the cashiers recently have been nicer.

Benny H.

Yelp
This is a great grocery store, but make sure you don't forget your bank account routing number as this place sin't cheap. What makes this place pretty special is their bakery, meats, wine selection, and a few other items. It's top quality stuff and you will find a lot items you can't find elsewhere. Oh, and they have Mitchel's ice cream. Can't go wrong with that. Probably in the top 5 grocery stores in the Bay Area. Lots of good stuff.

Gourmet L.

Yelp
One of the cashiers has turned sour which it is a shame, she should quit. She does not respond to a polite "Good Morning" nor that she answer routine questions. Don't know how she still there. If I go to Safeway I pay less and cashiers "talk to me". I have been patronizing this store since it open. I am old but a happy person, polite, never a grouch. This woman must be 40 or so and she is already a grouch?

Ronica L.

Yelp
Deli HEALTH warning... I have come to Draeger's every once in a while. Of course high end products and you will pay more, but that's fine, people make a choice. Good selections, and i agree that service is hit or miss. For sure, the checkout people don't seem happy, but ok. Today, I went in only to get some sliced turkey for sandwiches. When the service person went to weigh it, I thought I saw that he just placed the meat directly onto the scale (no paper or anything) but I'm short so I couldn't tell. Sure enough, he took that meat directly off the scale and put it onto paper He had in his hand. I was so disgusted that I was speechless. I could only imagine the bacteria that was sitting on the scale beforehand, and then how clean were the meat slicers? what kind of cross-contamination was there in any of the food in the hot/cold deli section? I am SO sorry that I didn't say anything to him at the time, but again, my mind was racing. Draegers, it's time to do a review with your employees on food handling safety. To everyone else, pay attention.

Leana G.

Yelp
Absolutely awful 20 something cashier arrogantly refused to walk over across aisle and sell fresh pies to me and 4 or 5 other customers because it was 5 to 10 minutes "after 7:00pm". I was raised by a grocer who taught me that when you have your own biz, the "paying"customer is always right. The cashier "carina" was unapologetic about the supposed policy of only selling baked goods between 7am and 7pm and could care less that I am a 50+ year patron of Draeger's markets and grew up w the family. I never post unless I'm really upset, and maybe common courtesy doesn't matter anymore. But I insist, as I told "carina" this is not good business practice! She should at least be reprimanded.

Elizabeth I.

Yelp
Wonderful awesome market. This is the 3rd Draegers market that I have been too.I have been to the Los Altos store and the Menlo park store. All of them are nicely run.Have awesome employees and the deli and bakery departments are excellent .

Cathrin P C.

Yelp
When I was younger, I used to be so impressed by this supermarket. It felt fancy and upscale, like if I had disposable income, I could shop here. Fast forward about two decades later, now I'm not so impressed. The staff who was managing the line to get into Draeger's acted like she had the worst job in the world. I would think part of shopping at an upscale supermarket is the experience of being welcomed. When it was our turn to enter, I felt like I was a nuisance to be let in. Right as you enter, there's a sanitation station where a sign posted says you MUST spray your hands no exceptions. Everyone has their opinion about COVID prevention these days and I'm not going to pass judgment on anyone's opinions -- as long as it's not forced upon me. I personally am more worried about being doused with sanitizer and other cleaning agents. We have yet to see the repercussions of all the overuse of chemicals being bombarded upon us since the scare of this pandemic. On another note, now that I'm "a real adult" in my 40's, I'm realizing that Draeger's doesn't actually carry a whole lot of selection. My local Sprouts has way more products and at a much better price point. For example, a pint of speciality ice cream will cost $1-2 more here. Maybe my 20something self couldn't see beyond all the fanciest but my sensible 40something self now knows better

Mandi F.

Yelp
Yes they're expensive, yes they're bougie, but they have fresh baked cookies available at 7am when they open! My office does a 'cookie of the month' event where everyone gets together and stuffs their faces with baked goods. I've pushed my turn out twice already... So of course I completely forget until 11pm the night before. Draegers to the rescue!!!!! Fresh, beautiful, and the Belle of the ball, I'm now one and done. Phew! Thanks Draegers! They were a hit!!!

john j.

Yelp
Awesome grocery store, they have every tasty little treat you have ever seen or dreamed of, so much incredible variety. It's fun just to walk the aisles and see such exquisite and high end snacks. Be sure to visit the bakery, their baked goods are made in-house and rival Andy local bakery in terms of quality or flavor.

Lois B.

Yelp
So rude. I called and (politely) asked to be transferred to the bakery department. "Could you please transfer me to the bakery department?" "No. They're way too busy to talk to you." "I'd just like to check if they have an item in stock so that I can decide whether to make the 30min drive to the store" "(laughs) You're not the only one. Not gonna do it for you." Seriously? Please do better.

Nasim K.

Yelp
Dragers San Mateo Location: We are long term client here. Since 2015! Recently, we have been having bad experiences with food gone bad and super rude store employees with a bad client service. On 8/6 we bought a pie which was expired and had a big blue mold on it which we saw after we opened it at home. On 8/12 we bought Mac&cheese from the front of the store, they warmed it up for our son and Thank God I tried it before he ate. It was stinky and tasted so bitter you couldn't even swallow. When we confronted the store employee who sold that Mac and cheese and store manager they said it is specially recipe and just spicy. They were super rude, didn't refund us and didn't acknowledged the fact that they sold the bad food to be served by a 5 year old!!!! He is actually a big fan of that Mac and cheese! I am super disappointed by their behavior and being so reckless about the food they sell. I don't have a picture of the mac and cheese buy I am posting the pie picture with the mold. Very disappointed!!!!!!

Shanna K.

Yelp
I needed a specific cut of meat for a holiday gathering and the team at Draegers really came through. The butchers were so friendly and helpful both on the phone and in person. I really cannot thank them enough. I don't do the majority of my shopping here because prices tend to be significantly higher. San Mateo has a lovely Farmers Market and other places to find the basics so I really cannot justify overspending on staples. However, when I need a specialty cheese or a beautiful dessert this is the place to be. They're also great for olives, cured meats and similar items for entertaining, specialty oils/vinegars, gifts, and other hard to find items.

Derek S.

Yelp
Came by for some imported chocolates the other night and was slightly disappointed that their chocolate bar closes before the rest of the store does. Unlike the prepackaged chocolates, the chocolates behind the glass had alcohol in it! Service by the staff was friendly and efficient. ...the grocery store was more like a ghost town towards the end of the evening... They did have a premium selection of meats and fruits too!

Ranjan P.

Yelp
I'm not sure what's going on here, e.g. I've always loved their salad bar and that's not changed--I'll keep going here exclusively for this. But WTF is going on with all of their bread aisles? Seriously? So much of their breads were missing. Not only the commercial sliced ones such as Oroweat what and sourdough, but also the daily baked fresh ones to the left of the deli and right of their bakery. We went in specifically for the bread and didn't get it. I'd maybe give them a pass and chalk it up to maybe they didn't get in their shipment for that specific day--but this has happened TWICE before on different visits, so it's a recurring issue? Maybe they should work on fixing it. Upstairs, I got a cute little mug in the shape of a VW 1960's mug with a peace symbol in the front. It was overpriced at almost $24, but I couldn't resist.

AL A.

Yelp
Unfortunately service has changed here significantly. I am shopping here for many many years but recently noticed that almost no one is available if you need a sandwich. There are 4 employees chit chatting next to cashier and one person is in charge of making sandwich and selling cheese and meat slices. I hope the manager will read this. You don't need 6 people standing and chatting next to cashiers while customer wait for 15 minutes for some one to even say hi or some one will be with you shortly. I gave up on this place and it happened twice since last week and bought my lunch some where else. You can juts buy machines and people can scan their items but need more people to attend your salad bar section or sandwich making,

Chyna C.

Yelp
The grocery store is so cool. They have so much stuff in here. Junk food, expensive champagne, fancy cheese, chocolates, cookies, European snacks, home goods, flowers, etc. Everything looks absolutely amazing in this store. I'm obsessed with fancy grocery stores. This is what I do in my days off. Find fancy stores, buy fancy snacks, and go home to share with the family. Anyways, I was in here for almost two hours just looking at stuff. I spent about $60 on snacks (I would've spent more but I'm trying to cut back). I love this store I will definitely be back to buy more.

Joanna T.

Yelp
Draegers is a food hall that is a-lot like Selfridges in London... but it's in downtown San Mateo! What? A gourmet supermarket in San Mateo, a Peninsula town. Yessiree! Who knew that San Mateo had such a customer base that would keep this market going. But it does! The towns of Hillsborough, Burlingame, Woodside and Foster City are not that far away. This market is so huge that it is on two levels with gifts on the upper one. My favorite area of the second floor are all the kitchen goods and table top items (fine china). This is a fantastic bridal registry shop for the upscale household. Ground floor: the market has a cheese & charcuterie island (!), a fish counter with a prepared sushi area. The refrigerated areas go on & on. They carry local goods (yeah). The floral department has beautiful plants, cut & faux flowers. Great for hostess gifts. The deli with prepared food spans the length of 75% of the store front...the food is not inexpensive though. But the best section in my opinion is the bakery. It's big with down home treats like chocolate chip cookies and breakfast pastries as well as fine cakes which can be custom ordered. I bought an apple pie. All the ingredients are recognizable food items (not artificial stuff). The crust was super flaky. The apples were amazingly juicy. Delicious! Aside from shopping for a family dessert, I enjoy and am entertained by browsing in this store. It's a gourmet foodie's delight.

Yelp
Why didn't I know about this store sooner???? I was on a flight from SFO to LAX and this lovely gent sat next to me, I told him that I recently moved up from LA and moved to San Mateo. I mentioned that I love wine and cheese and how I found some good wineries up north in a short period of time. He mentioned that I should check out Draeger's in DTSM, the wine and cheese selection are top notch. So I did, and not was I in for a treat! First off, if you like sweets, their bakery is precious and has so much variety. Their wine selection is uncanny, you can find some gems that aren't available in too many places other than online or direct from the wine label. Next, their cheese selection, you can do a 360 around the cheese station and will find what you're looking for. Have you ever tried caper berries???? Well if you like capers, find them in next to the olive section! While I was looking around, the gentleman at the butcher station helped me find the aisle I needed since I looked lost (so much to see). The place is super clean and well stocked. I came in towards closing time so I didn't get to go upstairs to their home goods section but you better believe I am going back and making an afternoon of my trip!
