"Looking for a dim sum dinner or lunch in the Lowcountry? Hit up Dragon Palace on Daniel Island for pork buns, shu mai, dumplings, and sesame balls. The interiors are retro fancy with ornate wood carvings and plenty of red. Dragon Palace also offers classics like chow mein, cashew chicken, and egg drop soup." - Erin Perkins

7 Stellar Selections for Chinese in Charleston

Yelp
The food, decor and service was exceptional. Coming from NY we are very familiar with quality Chinese food. Dragon Palace is a jewel of Charleston. Lee and Andre are very cordial and friendly. We looked at the menu, saw a braised duck dish and a dish of Chinese eggplant and pork. We started off with a delicious, authentic dumpling dish. The decor is from Taiwan and the artwork is genuine Chinese. I can't say enough about this bistro. It is a must visit.

Yelp
The main dishes are fantastic! It's a good family style chinese restaurant which is rare in charleston. The dim sum tasted a bit off but the normal dishes are great. The best part are the servers they are very attentive and sweet. The decorations and ambiance is nice with great seating. It wasn't packed but there is a large parking lot for parking. The only negative besides the dimsum tasting off is that they will clean the tables with a spray and the mist will flow onto your table. Would suggest using a pre moistened towel to clean the tables instead.

Yelp
Located in a stripmall in the Publix parking lot on DI, you're unprepared for the beauty contained within. From the moment you open the doors everything transforms and you're swept away to China... From the dark mahogany woods, imperial family table with a built in lazy Susan, the stained glass style lighting and paintings on the ceiling and the wall coverings, chair pads and beyond... You can't beat the $13 lunch special. Potion size, taste, quality... You name it. It's spot on! And you can add a cup of soup with a spring roll for 2 bucks! What a deal! They don't let your water cup or cocktails run dry. Constant service and attentiveness is what you get here.

Yelp
Great authentic Chinese food. I went to Dim Sum with a friend who is from Hong Kong so she knows whether something is authentic and made from scratch which is exactly what their dumplings and other items are. The flavor was simple yet fresh and flavorful as food should be. It's not a far drive from Mount Pleasant and no reservations are generally needed especially if you go on the early side. Restaurant is a bit dated but the service and food are both make up for the ambiance. I'm looking forward to going back soon.

Yelp
It's probably the only legit Chinese anywhere near Charleston! They have a cute little shop in an unassuming mall, which is beautifully decorated and upkept. The kicker is that on Saturdays, they do a dim sum brunch, and it absolutely rules. We got the mix of dumplings, rolls, and steamed dishes, and all were excellent. The host even made some recommendations, which all panned out and made us happy. All the staff were warm, and the entire facility was clean. Coming from a place with more asian options, my only complaint is the size of the dishes. We got about ten plates for two people, and I had a bowl of rice as well. I could have honestly kept eating, but it was all gone.

Yelp
From the outside it looks like a strictly takeout place. Their sign is on par with the sign for subway next door. They did have to go orders ready at the front door but the whole place is sit down. Very ornate woodwork, wood tables and chairs with nice red silk seat covers. A lot of work went into maintaining the old Chinese restaurant look but it was dated. Reminded me of the restaurant in A Christmas Story. Very nice staff. Was sat quickly and food was out very quick. Child friendly, high chairs available. There is a kids menu (not on the website). I had crispy tofu with mushroom over spinach. Very salty but I like salt. The tofu was like lightly breaded to make it crispy, not dried and fried. Cute place, I would go back again on a family night out but I would not go for a date night.

Yelp
Delicious Chinese food on Daniel Island. We got there early to avoid the crowd. Good thing because it got busy. It's been quite awhile since I've been here and it did not disappoint. Very nice Chinese Decorations. Our servers were Leon and Anna. She kept our water glasses full since it felt like summer and checked on us often. For adult beverages we had the Mango Mojito which was very refreshing and the Lemon Ginger Martini-both YUMZ. The Dragon Palce Sampler was a delicious assortment of appetizers consisting of Crispy Ginger Shrimp, Egg Rolls, Crab Rangoon, Spring Rolls and Honey Glazed Pork. Loved the Egg Drop Soup which was some of the best ever. We shared the Grand Marnier Shrimp and Sweet n Tangy Pork loin. The Egg Fried Rice hit the spot along with the Bok Choy. Needless to say tomorrow's lunch will be delicious with the abundance of leftovers. Thank you for a very nice lunch. Parking is plentiful. ENJOY!!

Yelp
Dragon Palace is located in Daniel Island in a strip mall near the Publix. As a result there are no issues with parking. The restaurant is basically non descript from the outside but once you enter it transports you to an Asian oasis. The decor and ambience in here is quite elevated & elegant. The service is quick efficient and staff are super helpful and kind. We had a wonderful experience. The menu is varied and cohesive with dishes from many Asian influences. All of our dishes were delicious hot, not greasy at all and tasty. As far as I am aware it's the only Chinese in the area that is not takeaway based. It's lovely to come sit down in nice surroundings and enjoy some delicious Chinese food. We had a great time and will definitely return.

Yelp
So this was my first time here. My friend recommended it and I was impressed. We ordered drinks, an appetizer, entree, and dessert. The restaurant was amazing and authentic. The staff was helpful and courteous. I had the walnut shrimp. It was flavorful and del. I love the layout of the restaurant very much"authentic" and welcoming. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
You wouldn't guess from the outside, but this is one attractive looking restaurant. They proudly serve old school Chinese with hard canned noodles and sweet sauce at every table. Chili and hot mustard also arrive before the meal. The Szechuan Tofu and Vegetable Ho Fun were not terribly inspired, but most yummy irregardless.

Michelle C.

Yelp
Great non greasy Chinese food. The most authentic "Americanized" Chinese food we've found in the area. Husband is Chinese and we've spent many years in nyc Chinatown so when we say it's good it's good.

Keith H.

Yelp
After a thoroughly negative experience here in the summer of 2023, my wife and I decided to give it another whirl on a recent Saturday afternoon. I am happy to say it was a complete redemption. The service was friendly and efficient. The food arrived within minutes. Our dishes (Singapore noodles, Grand Marinier Shrimp and bok choy) were well prepared and tasty. Maybe the previous experience was just an off day for them or maybe we learned our lesson and avoided the dim sum this time around. In any event, I'm glad to add Dragon Palace to my short list of solid Chinese restaurants in the Lowcountry. (3.75 stars).

James T.

Yelp
Very tasty and dim sum in the South. Dim sum is like none existent here, it seems, so when we found out they served dim sum, I had to go. Moving from San Francisco, I've been spoiled in this delight. Had the typical offerings, Sui Mai, har gow, pork buns, and potstickers. The variety wasn't all there, but some traditional ones for sure. Everything was tasty, and I'm glad we went out of our way to go. It literally seems like it's the only sit-down traditional Chinese restaurant in the state. Lol, definitely not the southern take out Chinese. If you're looking for a great sit-down Chinese, we'll this is your spot

Luis M.

Yelp
Food was amazing and the scenery was great. I would definitely come back again to try the rest of the menu items. The service was also amazing and everyone was nice

C. Ray T.

Yelp
I can say nothing bad here. The atmosphere was fabulous. The food was very good. Service was top drawer perfect. We drove out of our way based on suggestions and are very glad we did. It really is nondescript from the outside but go inside before you judge. Chinese-American menu.

Claire C.

Yelp
Loved the interior of the restaurant! Great food, the beef lo mein was amazing, by far the best I've ever had! The five spice duck was great too. I'd skip the chicken fried rice. So good overall, will be back!

Sean F.

Yelp
This is some of the best quality Chinese food that I've ever had. They have great quality meat and veggies. And the food isn't greasy like most Chinese restaurants. I can't deny, most of the entrees are a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Bernie G.

Yelp
An enjoyable Chinese dinner. Beautiful ambiance. Decorated to the hill. It's great service and delicious meals. Dragon fish and Chinese eggplant. Enjoyed them both we will definitely be back. Best Chinese restaurant we found in the last 5 years in the area

Alexis P.

Yelp
Just about the only place for dim sum in Charleston but it's okayyyyy not great. The food- pretty small dim sum menu. Just a few types of dumplings and one type of bun (roast pork). I'm used to the dim sum places with a menu of like 40 dishes to choose from but to be fair this is a Chinese restaurant with dim sum options. So variety was not great. We tried the sesame balls, roast pork buns, vegetable dumplings, and shumai. The sesame balls were yummy but pretty small. Same with the roast pork buns. The vegetable dumplings only had chives in them and nothing else which I thought was odd. The shumai were by far the best and very tasty. The venue- classic Chinese restaurant decor. They have the spinny center disc in the middle of some tables so that was nice for sharing. Overall seemed like a cute place for Chinese. The service- definitely on the slower side (seems understaffed) but our food didn't take long. They forgot to give us utensils and napkins so I had to go to the front to get some. Our waiter/waitress (wasn't clear who it was) was barely present so I just asked random workers for more water and stuff. Overall, so-so experience. BUT if you want dim sum, not a bad choice. I hope to find somewhere with more options!

Shayla V.

Yelp
My husband and I have been told to try this place for quiet sometime, it's just not close by, however the last couple times we've ordered Chinese I just wasn't satisfied and I warned him the next time he wanted Chinese, we were talking the drive to try it! So this brings me to last week... we arrived and were seated immediately. The place was nice, red my sons favorite color so he was happy lol! There's a bar when you walk in and they were definitely busy with takeout there too! Our server was very knowledgeable and we put our order in for our son which was just a side order of beef lo mein noodles with no veggies and then he suggested we just add on a meat. This was great because we never want to order him a huge order he's only 3.5! And the no veggie part lacks the normal flavor that I love from beef lo mein, so this made us all happy! I must say though their kids menus looked to be like one of the best at a Chinese restaurant. Then we ordered two egg rolls cause I always have to try them wherever we go. And an order of their pork dumplings. I wanted to also try their chow mein cause I've been searching for one like up North and though it sounded like it could've been it, it wasn't! It was a ton of crispy egg noodles, bean spouts, Napa cabbage, carrots and scallions and we chose pork for our meat. It was still really great though! And then we were tossed what we wanted as another entree. I asked him his opinion out of two others and he suggested the five spiced duck. And OH MY! We were in heaven with this dish. It was braised duck with Chinese spices, topped with shallot infused soy, over asparagus, and then we just subbed the white rice out for fried rice though not shown in pic. Oh and when I saw they also made all their own sauces, (not sure for to go orders) I quickly asked for spicy mustard, cause that is my jam. This dish with that mustard was heaven to my tastebuds. I am afraid I would never be able to go there and not order it just as we did! My husband whole heartedly agrees! It was an awesome size portion and it was even great the next day as leftovers! I can't wait to get back here to try some other items along with the duck lolllll

Maria S.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Very quick service and beautiful restaurant. Specially liked the LoMein. Chocolate Martini is the bomb!!!!!!

Jaclyn P.

Yelp
Overall: 3/5; I'm very thankful to have at least one dim sum place in Charleston, but in terms of dim sum variety/choices and service, it was about average. Food: 3.5/5! My friends and I have been having such a hard time finding a dim sum place in the Charleston area and we were so glad that one of us had stumbled upon Dragon Palace since it was one of our friends' first time. The food was great, but the portions are a lot smaller than most dimsum places that I've gone to. Ambience: 3/5; It was a little dark inside, so I do think that a little bit more light wouldn't hurt too much, but it was very quiet which was really nice! The service was also great, and our server was really friendly. Overall a good experience!

Sheryl G.

Yelp
Wonderful for 10 plus years even when carried out. However changed ownership Our experience us food not as good

Francine G.

Yelp
The food is great! Lovely decor! Great service and vibe, we have been coming here for many years and it's consistently good!

Sarah T.

Yelp
The food quality is consistently terrific and delicious. This has been my favorite Chinese restaurant in the greater Charleston area for years. Everyone who works here is so friendly and welcoming. It's also beautifully decorated and clean. Highly recommend!

Sloan N.

Yelp
Everything was correct and arrived quickly at our home. The food is very good and amazing portions. We had a wonderful meal and had enough for leftovers the next day. We definitely recommend Dragon Palace.

Luis F.

Yelp
In my opinion one of the best Chinese restaurant in the area. House wonton soup, roasted pork (incredible) - all entrees never disappoint. They have small staff but do a good job staying on top their guest needs.

Kelly C.

Yelp
I hate leaving bad reviews... but this was bad. We ordered takeout this past Saturday evening before we thought there would be a semi rush. Food was on time... but it was so bland, so soggy. The fried rice tasted like old oil. Not one ounce of flavor. We had their Sweet and Tangy Pork loin, garlic chicken and egg rolls. At their prices- won't be trying it again.

Allie F.

Yelp
The only Chinese place I'm aware of in Daniel Island but it's great! Eating inside is ok, it's fun to look at the decor once. My favorite thing to do though is order carry out and then go have a Chinese beer at the bar while I wait. It's Ying-something. So good! Steamed pork dumplings are some of the best I've had. So juicy, so well seasoned! I also love the Ho Fun noodles.

,marcello L.

Yelp
Extremely disappointed! food was cold and had to send back multiple dishes. Food was not like it used to be. Service was poor as well. Will not go back!

Rachyl D.

Yelp
We've heard really good things and finally decided to try it. It wasn't bad, but wasn't the best Chinese we've had either. The prices seem really high for the portion sizes. The spring rolls were really good though and the chicken was good! The rice seemed pretty plain and I wish there was more sauce. Not a bad option, but for the price there are better places.

Mary N.

Yelp
Great Chinese food. Wonderful staff and menu choices.

A L.

Yelp
I love this restaurant it's always amazing and has wonderful service. But tonight that was definitely not the case i was very disappointed . And even after the fact when we told them they drew no attention to it not even apologizing. I would also like to add that the food was cold when they brought it out and had to make the majority of it a second time.

Jill S.

Yelp
I should have taken pictures, I regret I didn't. The service and food there is just wonderful. I went there because they offer gluten free items, and I love Asian food. I had spring rolls, and yes, I know they have gluten. My allergy is not deadly, I can take small portions of it. At any rate, the spring rolls were delicious!!! They had just been made and you could tell. They were fresh! I had the Sweet and Tangy Pork Loin, and it was terrific too!! They pieces of pork were golden and delicious, just the right amount of sweet and tangy!! Everything was just great, and the server was very helpful also, with my gluten free selections. I will be back, thank you all so very much!! Pineapple Fried Rice......I ordered it to go!!

Amy L.

Yelp
Three stars because the flavors were on point. Walked in almost to 8:00. The dinning room had maybe 2 other tables. He through our menus down and walked away. When he came back we ordered our drinks , soup and app platter. He kept on coming back asking for our entrees. We were still deciding but he told us the kitchen closed at 8 so hurry up. I was thinking why the heck did he even seat us. We ordered the dragon fly fish to share. However it was full of bones. The waiter said "it's fish, they always have bones". How rude. We were rushed from the start when they should have turned us away. The flavors were there but that is it.

Greg P.

Yelp
Decent Chinese takeout. You know what you're going to get for the night price, fast.

Rachel T.

Yelp
I love this place. One if the few and only Chinese bistros. Not a buffet, nicer better quality. Decor is ready Chinese decor. A little pricy but so delicious!

Terezia T.

Yelp
Best Chinese food we have found in the Charleston area, the quality of products they use really show and make a difference. The food here is amazing. We are from NY and agree the food here is better than most Chinese restaurants in NY. This is our go to and only Chinese spot we patronize.

Jerrin H.

Yelp
Stopped by here wanting to sit down and eat some yummy Chinese food. I checked the menu beforehand and saw they had a kids menu and assumed it would be great for my 2 year old to go. Heads up for parents of little ones- they DO NOT have high chairs or booster seats! The waiter did try and stack 2 cushions on top of each other for my son to sit but they were covered in a plastic material and he quickly slid off and under the table. Also to note, I am 6 months pregnant and he took my cushion to use for my son's "booster" which was a little odd in my opinion. The environment is really appealing and it is just a shame it wasn't more accommodating. I feel like they shouldn't have a kids menu if they don't particularly want to serve children. The food was pretty basic but not bad. We ordered to-go after all that played out. Sesame chicken and shrimp vegetable. It was good but I'd rather try somewhere new next time.

Tom K.

Yelp
ordered takeout and was disappointed. the Mongolian beef was short on beef and very long on onions. that said, it was tasty. the fried rice was very sticky...more like steamed rather than fried. will not order that again.

Teresa L.

Yelp
We visited Charleston during the holidays and stayed on the Daniel's Island. The Island is close to everything but itself doesn't have much to offer. One night we didn't want to drive out to eat, so found this restaurant nearby. We are Chinese by origins but not very picky about food. The food at this restaurant isn't typical Chinese food, but still acceptable if you are not pampered by Chinese restaurants in CA or NY or DMV. We are a family of four with two teens and ordered four dishes. The portions are small compared to most Chinese restaurants we have been. The flavor is more western Chinese, similar to what you can get from a shopping mall food court or Panda Express, but you pay a lot more for the same quality. The rice is of nice quality, that's the highlight of our experience. The service is cold. The owner (who can speak some Mandarin) apparently doesn't like Chinese people. He was way more enthusiastic towards his white customers than to us. Even we spoke Mandarin to him, he only gave us forks for our plates until we asked for chopsticks. Overall, a less pleasant experience!

Michael B.

Yelp
When it comes to Chinese food on the island you don't have many choices, but the best choice on the island is Dragon Palace in the Publix shopping plaza. I've used them plenty of times for take out Chinese when I didn't feel like cooking. I'd call in my order and pop on over on my way home to pick up dinner. We usually get the General Tso chicken, crab rangoon, and hot & sour soup. The thing I like about Dragon Palace is the food it cooked to order, so it's always fresh and tasty.

Maggie Z.

Yelp
Food was subpar. Not your traditional cart dim sum place. Very Americanized. Xiaolongbao was terrible, wrapping way too thick that it stuck to the underlayer wrapping. Pork bun and congee although was good - would recommend those. Other than that, would probably not come back

Daniel T.

Yelp
Dragons Palace on Daniel Island in the past was one of my wives and my favorite restaurant. One of the things that have always drawn us to the restaurant was the beautiful decor. The interior of the building does not correlate to the shopping center outside. Once you step inside it is like being transported to a far east building. With beautiful and ornate designs all over the walls. This, fortunately, has not changed and the restaurant is still just as beautiful as ever. The other aspect that kept us coming back was the service. In the past, it was always fantastic. With knowledgeable staff and quick food service, there has never been anything to complain about. This, fortunately, has not changed either. The one thing that has changed is the food. The first few times that we visited the food was amazing. So much so, that we arranged a dinner date with friends there and everyone enjoyed it. During this last visit, everything went as expected from our past visits. However, when the food came out, although beautiful in appearance, the taste was lacking. This is not something that is to be expected of Chinese food. There should be bold strong flavors. The food we recently recieved was underwhelming and blan. Hopefully it was just a fluke and it will be back to normal soon.

Christi T.

Yelp
Dragon Palace is not the Chinese restaurant I think people expect when they walk in. As in, it's not a fast food Chinese takeout spot where you run in for your number 5 and packets of soy sauce. Instead, it's in my opinion a step above when you consider the ambiance and food. The restaurant is decorated very lavishly with wooden carvings and Asian inspired art, even on the ceiling. The decor may seem over the top for some but I do think it's fitting for the restaurant. I've always believed that the prices were reasonable for the quality and quantity of food that you receive. The general tso's chicken is a favorite of mine and can easily feed two people. This visit, we also ordered the lettuce wraps, wonton soup, and chicken dumplings. The lettuce wraps were good. The chicken and vegetables were cooked well and did have good flavor. The wonton soup was also good as were the dumplings, though I will say that the wontons and dumplings tasted the exact same. The only difference was that they were folded differently. The general tso's chicken is lightly fried and served with pineapple, bell pepper, broccoli, and rice. The chicken was cooked nicely and not overly coated or fried. The broccoli was also cooked well and was freshly prepared. Overall, we felt very satisfied with our dinner. The service was good as well. Our sever was polite, attentive, answered our questions well, and seemed very knowledgeable about the menu.

Philip S.

Yelp
Good Chinese on DI. Worth a try and will return! Classic Chinese menu, great choices!!!

Larry Y.

Yelp
We decided to give Dragon Palace a try and went the night of Chinese New Year this year. I remember why I rated them that way last time...its the service. We ordered a total of 8 entrees that evening (lucky 8) since it was Chinese New Year. Usually, we would try and cook 8 or even 12 course meals on New Years, but this was the easiest alternative, plus no prepping, cooking or cleanup involved. The food is spot on, but our waiter just needs to be more attentive. He brought us 3 small bowls of rice and we have a family of 5, not to mention, we ordered more than three dinner entrees. Once the restaurant started getting busy, he was no where to be found except helping other patrons. When he finally did, we were ready to leave. I asked to box the leftovers home and no white rice was included either. Our drinks needed refills as well...

Mike B.

Yelp
We both got shrimp fried rice and it was very good, even though I think of this meal as being more Thai. I did have a problem with the appetizer. We got the seafood roll, and while it did have some shrimp in it, that was the only identifiable seafood. Tha amount of pineapple in the roll totally dominated the roll. The atmosphere was definitely Chinese and the service was very good. I will be back.

Albert L.

Yelp
This is a locally owned Chinese bistro on Daniel Island. The inside decor is impressive but curiously empty of evening diners, however they do a huge take-out business. The menu seems typical. The service was good. This is a good choice to satisfy your Chinese food cravings.
