"Another vision brought to life by Gator graduates, Dragonfly Sushi and Sake Co. has popularized Japanese cuisine in Gainesville for over two decades. Owners Hiro Leung and Song Kim aimed to expand access to Japanese food in a town they felt lacked it. The shareable menu items consistently bring in a large crowd, becoming a popular restaurant for date nights and celebrations. Begin the meal with buttered edamame and fried, peach-glazed krab wontons, followed by a specialty roll loaded with toppings not found in sushi bars nearby for $10 to $17, such as the Doralzuela roll with chimichurri steak and the Cobra Kai roll with garlic pesto and berry balsamic." - Jared Teitel

Google
my boyfriend and i came here for the first time for valentine’s day and had an amazing time!!!!! our server Steven was so kind and explained the menu to us very thoroughly, he checked on us multiple times and gave us little candies :) the food blew us away (if you come here you absolutely have to get the short ribs)!! it’s a little pricey compared to other restaurants here but priced appropriately for the quality of the dishes i think! i also got the supreme kiku cocktail, i drink very rarely but i loved it! the atmosphere is really nice too, very cozy. we’re definitely going to come back!!

Google
Food was fabulous! Loved the pork dumplings! We had so many sushi rolls all delicious. Ramen short rib bowl huge in flavor and size. Waiter was perfect.

Google
Absolutely love this spot. All things considered the price is very fair because the food quality is very high. If you want something cheaper go somewhere cheaper that being said I love coming here for a nice impromptu date night every few months my wife is not a huge sushi fan, but she’ll enjoy it with me because she knows I love this place in the summer months. It’s pretty nice to sit outside and any other time. It’s just a great spot to come in and enjoy some fresh sushi. The edamame is one of my favorite things. I don’t know what it is, but they put some sort of weird pork stuff on it then when you take the lid off it kind of curls up and looks alive. I really F with that come on down to dragonfly sushi where every sushi is a touchdown.

Toxic Terps

Google
This place was a great place for a date. Our server autumn was very attentive and the food came out hot and fresh, even with a full restaurant. The drinks were well made and they had a bunch of delicious and interesting sushi combinations. We will definitely be visiting here again.

Shalin Shah

Google
Service was great. Sushi was well priced. Only star removed was due to most rolls containing 7+ elements. No ginger or wasabi either. Drinks were well priced and restaurant was right in the middle of downtown. Gyoza were $8 for 6 and that felt right. Nigiri was okay- otoro was the strangest cut of otoro I’ve ever had - it’s the blocky one in the photo

Google
We heard good reviews so we decided to try it. We're so glad we did! The food was delicious and our waitress was fantastic. We'll be back!

Kissa Doody

Google
We stopped in on a Friday night before heading to a show downtown and were pleasantly surprised by the inviting outdoor bar—no wait, just a perfect spot to relax with a drink. Although we didn’t order food, the cocktails were crafted beautifully and hit the mark. Bonus points for offering drinkable water, which not every place does! The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, making the experience even better. We’ll definitely be back and highly recommend this spot for a quick, well-made drink or two.

Google
Absolutely great! We visited just before Thanksgiving. Lots of people - we definitely understand why. It's a cool spot with a lot of seating. The staff seems good and friendly. We tried a combination of several things - my husband tried their steamed bun with ribs and loved it. Then, we moved to gluten free options: grilled shrimp (amazing!), grilled beef (the weakest of all, but still very good), Tuna Kobachi (very good), and two rolls: Big Boss (slightly disappointing, it's very bland, which is surprising) and O-Renji (absolutely amazing). They have GF menu! <3 Would come back again on another Gainesville visit.

Yelp
To be honest, being plant-based has made me very blasé about sushi. So I have never understood why Dragonfly is coveted as Gainesville's "it restaurant" However, they have a great assortment of creative veggie rolls with my favorite being the Big Veggie Boss! I have gone multiple times for work with parties of 5+ and the service is always excellent despite it being busy no matter what night of the week it is!

Hayli Z.

Yelp
First time here even though it's been on my must-try list for years. I wanted to try the bao buns that's the whole reason I came but I found other things I wanted to try instead. It was busy so had to sit at the bar and they were doing happy hours specials. I got the veggie dumplings, which were pretty tasty and then I got this mushroom entrée that was like fried oyster mushrooms - it was SO good. Definitely want to come back to eat in the dining area next time

Lilly T.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in Gainesville!!! I have eaten at Dragonfly so many times and I always have such an amazing meal. I've tried lots of different rolls, apps, and drinks. The food tastes very fresh and authentic which is why it's a fav spot of mine. The service is always great however the weekends tend to get busy. They have a happy hour during the week with discounted rolls and drinks so it's always fun for me and friends to meet up for an early dinner. The atmosphere is open and inviting and they have the option for both indoor and outdoor seating. They also have an outdoor bar which I love!! Highly recommend Dragonfly if you're looking for a cute place for dinner with delicious sushi!

John C.

Yelp
If you only eat one meal in Gainesville, stop at Dragonfly! The sushi is so fresh and they have something for everyone. Their ramen is great and if you go Sunday - Thursday you can get their happy hour specials! The service was excellent and kept our drinks full. The noise was manageable and the location is great. Plenty of paid parking nearby to the south

Nikki S.

Yelp
Food: - Slammin Salmon Roll: the salmon was flavorful and well cooked, my favorite roll from here - Black Dragon Roll: i enjoyed the combination of smoked eel and crab - The sauces and cream cheese seem to overpower the sushi a bit. The sushi is relatively good, but is somewhat Americanized. It is on the pricier side, but this is reasonable given the ambiance of the restaurant and the unique rolls they offer. Service: - Always a long wait if you go on a weekend night (sometimes 1 hr) - Friendly, relatively attentive staff Ambiance: - Gives classy, dinner date vibes (great place for a date, or a celebratory dinner if you make a reservation) - Semi-dark lighting - Because it is busy, you might feel rushed during peak hours - Outdoor seating is nice (lit with torch lanterns) - Located in Downtown Gainesville, near the Hippodrome, so it's situated well if you want to stroll around the area afterwards or while waiting

Julia S.

Yelp
We were seated as soon as we walked in; and to our surprise it was happy hour! Our party of 2 opted for edamame, pan fried gyoza, seaweed salad, ginger salad, and two rolls to share. The Big Boss was my favorite - but everything was spectacular. This place is perfect for dinner, with dim lights, attentive service, and great food and prices. Would happily return!

danielle m.

Yelp
Food was good. Menu has decreased dramatically including the drink menu. However, the service was awful. I won't be back. The waitress tried to memorize our orders instead of writing anything down. She was terrible. We didn't get our drinks and some of our party never got their food until we were done eating so they had to take it home. What is so hard about writing the orders down? There were 5 of us with a bunch of different food and drinks. The waitress barely came back so we couldn't even ask about the food. I won't go back. Poor service.

Sofia A.

Yelp
Food was great, we ordered the pork ramen and short rib miso ramen. Both very flavorful and complex, very generous portion as well. Service was very good, fast and respectful. Overall, not too packed on a Sunday night and their outside seating is very enjoyable.

Jessica T.

Yelp
Kat was outstanding in every way! The food was exceptional and the service was even better! This establishment is better with her working here. I would give 10 starts for Kat if I could!

Alexa R.

Yelp
Dragonfly is my go-to sushi place in Gainesville. Anytime someone visits, I take them here. This restaurant gets really packed, especially during football games / parent's weekends, so it's important to make a reservation if you know you are visiting ahead of time. The happy hour is a must, as rolls are $7-8 and appetizers are priced well below average price. The krispy krunch roll is the best roll on the menu in my opinion, especially if you like fried rolls, but the bomb roll is excellent too if you enjoy cream cheese sushi. Don't forget to try their steamed edamame, as it is packed with flavor and seasoned to a T. The vibe is like a laid back yet upscale sushi restaurant. It is a great choice for a nice weekday meal or a celebratory dinner.

Luisa B.

Yelp
While in Gainesville we looked on Yelp for a restaurant close to where we were staying at Sweetwater inn. This restaurant came up and since we love sushi we looked at reviews and headed that way. It was a nice 10 minute walk to the restaurant and we sat in the outside bar. The Supa green drink was fabulous but the real star where the rolls !! We ordered big boss, volcano , black Dragon , and o-renji and they were outstanding. Flavorful, beautiful presentation, generous and Fresh !!!! My husband wanted to go back for lunch but we must move on. Highly recommend this place. Forgot to take pics of rolls but posting picture of restaurant.

Michael P.

Yelp
Okay seriously -anyone giving place fours should be ashamed. This is five star place all around. Rocky the bartender makes great drinks. The waitress Kayla ) gave a perfect description of the sushi tastes and gave us recommendations. We forgot to take pictures but everything we ordered like 8 dishes for 3 people was awesome. Plates are small and they recommended 2-3 per person. This will be a must place!

Rachel W.

Yelp
Obsessed with Dragonfly, and I wish I could go back some time soon. Their drinks are fantastic, service was quick, and their sushi was insanely good. Also the bao buns??? SO good. It's a must-go if i'm ever back in Gainesville.

Josie G.

Yelp
Seated immediately and very nice place. Everything was delicious! Probably the most I've spent on a bowl of ramen but 100% worth it! Will definitely be returning.

Travis S.

Yelp
Great addition to the neighborhood! Very pretty inside. High ceilings, feels new and fresh.

Alexa S.

Yelp
I've tasted better sushi, but this is the best you'll get in Gainesville! The fish tasted not as fresh this past time I went, but still giving it a 4 because it was good and great ambiance and efficient service. I do recommend always having a reservation.

Pink C.

Yelp
Been going to Dragonfly for years and it never disappoints. Great customer service, amazing food and drinks, and an overall great restaurant vibe! Would recommend to anyone coming in town to visit or just for some awesome sushi!

Chu H.

Yelp
Happy Hour is the only time worth coming here. Service has improved since the last time we were here. Menu has changed so it was nice to try something new. Nice ambiance for dates or special occasions.

Paul R.

Yelp
Wonderful sushi and the other Asian dishes. Only downside is it is always crowded with often to wait to be seated. Also, parking is very limited. But giving these shortcomings, it is a wonderful place to go and the food is fantastic.Black Dragon and Crunch Roll are our favorites. Service is excellent and fast.

Lydia P.

Yelp
I always go to Dragonfly for their happy hour and I love it! They have a good selection of drinks, apps, and sushi. One of my favorites is the salmon hand roll. The fish is fresh and pairs well with the spicy sauce they add in. The imitation crab/cream cheese wontons also deserve a shoutout. The dish comes with a sweet peach glaze that pairs so well with the wontons. It's a unique and yummy combination I haven't ever had elsewhere. Overall great place if you're looking to treat yourself to nice sushi

Christy M.

Yelp
Dragonfly is a great local date spot, especially for their happy hour on Sun-Th 5-7pm! They have selected appetizers/rolls and drinks for discounted price, so I ate two salmon hand rolls, yellowtail uramaki, and wontons from the happy hour menu. For the amount you get, price, and atmosphere, it's totally worth the price! I sat at the sushi bar and had the hand rolls and uramaki handed to me by the sushi chefs. Customer service was great and food was delicious. Dragonfly is one of the better sushi restaurants of Gainesville.

Nathaniel D.

Yelp
Dragonfly is the sushi place in gainesville, and for good reason. The sushi here is always a notch above the others and it's not that much more expensive. You usually have to show up and wait about 30 minutes to an hour on nearly every evening after 6. The service staff is amazing and the inside and outdoor seating are both super cute. They have a wide menu but personally i've only ever gotten sushi here and absolutely recommend it. I think I would recommend literally every roll, but my favorite two are the slammin salmon and the mango tango roll. The slammin salmon has flake apart soft cooked salmon and is to die for. Never experienced a salmon roll like it anywhere else as it's not raw nor on the inside of the roll. The mango tango has a great mixture of texture, sweetness, and umami that makes for an amazing experience. I love the sweet mango contrasting eve thing else! I love dragonfly and recommend it to anyone. If only they could sponsor me!

Brandon F.

Yelp
The food is always great and the drinks keep coming! Great spot to visit with friends downtown!

Patrick C.

Yelp
The appetizers and sashimi are good. The specialty rolls are all mostly imitation crab... They are not very good.

Ian A.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for a long time -- so worth the wait! Waiter recommended ordering two plates per person, and cannot agree more. We ordered different kinds of rolls, Volcano and The Bomb. The Volcano was my favorite of the three! We also ordered the Fried Calamari and the wontons. The wontons were perfect, like wow. Overall, staff was really nice and service was phenomenal even if it was packed. Definitely recommend reserving on OpenTable ahead of time because we didn't wait for a table at all.

Yona O.

Yelp
My family and I stayed at a hotel nearby for a UF Orientation (Go Gators!) and were super hungry right after the orientation. We came in at a really busy time (5-6pm) but the service was still very fast despite being busy! Our server, Jada C, was super nice and made the experience so enjoyable. The entrees itself were *ok* and the sushi is phenomenal The braised ribs were a little too sweet, and could of been made to be slightly more savory However, every other image listed below was perfect!

Oscar V.

Yelp
Highly recommended by various coworkers so I decided to try it. Very satisfied with great sushi selection and service. Not too thrilled about the drinks so I just do non-alcoholic here.

Ziyu L.

Yelp
Great sushi place at Downtown Gainesville with lots of delicious options. We absolutely loved the mushroom - well seasoned, highly flavorful. Our server was friendly and helpful with recommendations. However, it's very busy at dinner time so it can be loud and our food came in pretty late. Also parking isn't great so get there early.

Emma S.

Yelp
We had tried to come here multiple times but they were always packed. We finally made a reservation and the service was quick. The food was absolutely delicious and the happy menu was pretty good too. We got the Mango Tango roll which was sweet and savory and the Bomb which just melted in our mouths. Overall a nice place, just be mindful that it's a bit expensive and be sure to make a reservation.

Raegan N.

Yelp
Went here to celebrate a birthday and was hyped up by friends/family. It was considerably more expensive than other sushi restaurants in the area and not super memorable. The fish was fresh and the rolls were decent, but the service was iffy and I honestly consider this restaurant overrated. Much better off trying other places further away from campus.

Kayla M.

Yelp
best sushi place is gainesville. the unagi and sake nigiri is perfect and buttery. i also love the bomb roll, the spicy tuna crispy rice, and the tuna flatbread. staff is super friendly and punctual. they even do it in courses which keeps the table less cluttered

Erica E.

Yelp
Thee elite Sushi bar in the swamp!! We've been blessed with so many delicious sushi spots in Gainesville and Dragonfly is definitely right up at the top. Don't think that you can just pop up here all the time, a reservation would be a wise choice! Located in the heart of downtown Gainesville, Dragonfly is a fantastic choice for a friend's night out, date night, or whatever occasion you're celebrating. You're in for a real treat whether you sit and enjoy your dinner al fresca with a view of the city or if you sit inside in the beautifully-decorated interior restaurant. The vibes inside of the restaurant are so moody and chill, I love it! I honestly feel like there hasn't been a dish that I have failed to enjoy here, from the entrees to the sushi bar - each bite has been worthwhile. The sushi always tastes incredibly fresh and when paired with one of their delicious cocktails? *chefs kiss* I've also always enjoyed the amazing service I've received here and my last visit was no exception. Upon learning that we were celebrating a birthday and major life changes, our amazing server returned to our table with a surprise plate of mochi ice cream, fruit and chocolate - so sweet!! So if you're looking for a delicious meal paired with a beautiful venue and prime location, look no further.

Lauren M.

Yelp
A trip to Gainesville is not complete without a visit to dragonfly. No reservations taken means a line starting to form for tables a little bit before opening each day. Visit for happy hour for the best deals! All of their sushi rolls are exceptional but I recommend trying at least one piece of salmon or tuna while here as theirs is the freshest I've ever found in the state of Florida. I was impressed with my seared ahi tuna appetizer in taste and size and would recommend any of their cocktails to enjoy while waiting on your meal. The ginger salad is basic but also a hit from everyone in our group! Dont forget to order sake- ask your server for help selecting but I do recommend ordering an unfiltered sake for a unique and quality flavor.

Raymond R.

Yelp
Highly recommend the pork belly Ramen. It was very good and filling. Location is great! Service was very good! Love this spot for dinner!

Jack J.

Yelp
Shitty service, shitty staff, place smells like bleach as they use a dirty mop to "clean" around you. If I could leave a 0 star review I would. Don't go here unless you want to be treated like shit and spend $200 on mediocre at best food. Honestly a disgrace to downtown Gainesville.

Laurel J.

Yelp
Fabulous sushi!!! We found ourselves in Gainesville & stumbled upon this place. We were seated promptly (even with it being Halloween & a FL/GA game day), & our server was wonderful. He guided us through the menu & we started w/the brussel sprouts. They were SO good!!!! Our sushi rolls were fabulous, also. HIGHLY recommend this place! We will def be back!

Matt P.

Yelp
I had heard about Dragonfly for awhile but had slowly been trying different sushi places in Gainesville before I finally went and checked it out with a group of people for a friend's birthday dinner. The menu includes all kinds of seafood and asian dishes, not just sushi. I ordered The Bomb and the happy hour Krispy Krunch roll, both of which were tasty but overall average when it comes to sushi. I couldn't help but feel that at Dragonfly you are paying extra for the elegance of the restaurant. This is, of course, because it's a restaurant in downtown Gainesville, so this doesn't come as a shock, it's just not something I'd do again.

Natalie P.

Yelp
My favorite "treat yourself sushi" in town! Is it cheap? No. Is it authentic? No. But does it taste delicious and will I continue to come? YES!! I'd recommend coming close to opening or making a reservation because it does get busy on the weekends and is a popular spot during graduation season. I think my favorite roll so far is the Smoky Dragon! I really like the Volcano, Black Dragon, and Cobra Kai rolls too. An interesting roll they have is the Mango Tango, and definitely has a unique taste if you're worried about ordering multiple rolls and having the flavors start to all blend together. If you're one of those people who don't like fruits in their savory dishes then this is not for you... I also wouldn't really recommend the "Spicy roll" either because it is quite small and sad in comparison to the fancier rolls. Their ramen is a solid choice too! I really need to try more rolls! I'm constantly trying to find excuses and reasons to celebrate so that I can make a trip to Dragonfly haha.

Michael A.

Yelp
Excellent staff! Just so nice there! Beautiful indoor atmosphere, outdoor seating and bar, and my black and bleu role was excellent! Loved it there.

Jami W.

Yelp
So happy we stumbled onto the Dragonfly. The food was amazing, I recommend the Mango Tango and the Dumplings! The ambience is a perfect and the GM Juel is just that a Jewel. We will visit again when we are in town, don't miss out on this dining experience.

Kelli M.

Yelp
Yikes! The restaurant was very busy, but we were able to sit at the sushi bar. I personally like to sit at the bar, so that was no issue for me. The meal started with miso. It arrived with fresh, raw white button mushrooms floating on top. Not a fan. Instead of the rich umami miso, there was raw dirty styrofoam flavor. I ordered the chefs choice Nigiri. I love sushi and always trust the chef to provide their favorites and the freshest sushi. Seven very pretty pieces of sushi arrived. The first piece, blue fin was bad. Fishy, slimey and not fresh. The second and third piece were fine, nothing special, but not bad. Then the scallop: ARGH. Fishy, tacky, ammonia. I actually considered spitting it back out of my mouth, but remember I was at the sushi bar, and I didn't want to be rude. It sure why I cared. I could not even bear the thought of eating the rest. Sorry to say, but if you are looking for delicious sushi, this is not the place to try. I would have preferred to eat grocery store sushi.

Jim G.

Yelp
Food is awesome. Service is horrible and slow. Great cocktails with great bar scene.

Sonia K.

Yelp
Dragonfly is worth every single wait, bite, and penny. The waitress was so kind- even helping me find a non-alcoholic mocktail to order. I loved the experience of ordering in between rounds and ordering until we were full. The fish is so fresh we could not believe it and ended up ordering more! The only note I would give is that the sashimi we ordered was cut unevenly. But it was a busy night so I understood. There is an option for everyone here. You must go to Dragonfly!!

William W.

Yelp
Excellent service, food exceeded our expectations and made our list of return locations. It's a Gainesville hidden Jewel...

Allie J.

Yelp
Terrible customer service and over rated food. Lacking in quality. If you know good sushi you don't go to this place. Or really any place in Gainesville. Absolute garbage!

Gabriela A.

Yelp
Great food and drinks! The ramen is really bug and good and the buns are delicious. I recommend

Ted F.

Yelp
The best in Gainesville Best food Best service Best people Wouldn't go anywhere else

Alyssa S.

Yelp
If I could give 0 stars I would. The bartender refused to serve my friend and I at 10:15 when the establishment closes at 11. She had other patrons at the bar and the restaurant was busy with business, and when I pointed out how early it was and that we only wanted 1 drink, she refused to serve us. I think she was racist. Horrible establishment will never go here again

Nate S.

Yelp
My favorite sushi restaurant in the country. I'd rather come here than Nobu in Malibu. I've been eating here over 15 years and it's always great! When I worked in Gainesville I'd come in several times a month. Now that I live in California, I'm only able to come 1-2x/year. I've attached a pic of my favorite roll: It has seared Ny strip medium rare with microgreens and seasoning on top, wasabi in the center and soaked in house-made ponzu butter. My other favorite roll is the Big Boss. Unfortunately they no longer make the salmon-fly roll. It was a secret menu Item, so maybe if enough people ask they'll bring it back ;) Keep up the great work, Dragonfly!

Kara B.

Yelp
4/15/21: After a long day of driving yesterday, my boyfriend and decided to rest. Then later go out to dinner. Me, being a sushi lover, I decided to "Yelp for Help" hehe I read the reviews of few Yelpers, they seemed pleased about this place so then I let my boyfriend know. Of course, my boyfriend was like, "You and your Yelp" LOL... he just jelly, he is not a Yelp Elite :p ANYWAYS.... My boyfriend and I decided to take an Uber to the place! Even the Uber driver said, "Dragonfly is amazing!"-- hearing that from the Uber driver, made me more excited :) Once we arrived. we noticed that the place offers outdoor seatings as well as indoor seatings. [Oh!] the place was pack. However, it did not stop us :) We went inside and was greeted by the host and the hostess. They told us, "it would be a 40min wait." We responded back, "that's ok, because it will give us time to look around downtown" Then the host asked for my name and number. The number was used so the host can text me when a table is available. [Long story short] Downtown in Gainesville was not bad at all! So many other restaurants to check out... They even had few wall art to look at :) Fast forward time: The host kept his word about the waiting time :) We were seated in a nice corner. I enjoyed it because I was able to admire a beautiful view outside as the sun goes down :) Our waitress, Carol greeted us while serving us water. She was so sweet and polite ! I let her know that there would be two checks; meaning, I would take care of the food and my bf takes care of the drinks (it is never like this all the time, we take turns in paying always). :) We ordered: Pork Ramen - $14 --- pork belly, bok choy, bean sprouts, poached egg, mayu, negi, beni shoga, menma, nori, tonkotsu broth, scallions Volcano Roll. - $14 --- baked, salmon, bacon, pickled jalapeños, scallop delight, avocado, krab delight, spicy sauce, eel sauce Mango Tango - $ 11 --- smoked salmon, cream cheese, mango, avocado, tempura flakes, sweet potato curls, peach-apricot reduction Mango Mochi - $11 Drink: Wakatake Onikoroshi 'Demon Slayer' - $95 - shizuoka prefecture junmai daiginjo --- very clean, beautifully round, silky texture, hints of honeydew Main reason why my boyfriend got the 'DemonSlayer' was because that's our favorite anime tv show we watched and he loves high quality drinks haha :)) Overall thought, I enjoyed everything!!!! Ramen was cooked just right, Sushi(s) were fresh and delightful. Loved the Mango Mochi! --- Service, Experience, & Food 10/10 :) I can't wait to come here whenever I am in town again! [Oh!] they have a vegetarian menu! :) Check out the menu! -- Very easy to navigate too! https://www.dragonflyrestaurants.com/gainesville-florida/dinner-menu/#menu
