What to Eat and Drink on a Day Trip From Seattle to Vashon Island | Eater Seattle

"Cider tastings (offering “five 2-ounce or four 4-ounce pours”) are paired with a menu that includes applesauce donuts with strawberries and whipped cream cheese, a pulled pork sandwich with apple BBQ sauce, and anchovy-garlic whipped ricotta crostini with hazelnuts and peppers. In summer the orchard is open Friday through Saturday with outdoor seating on Adirondack chairs and hammocks." - Sharon McDonnell

This is a slice of heaven on Earth. I have to admit, I didn't go looking for this place, I accidentally found it while looking for a bathroom. I'm so glad I did. According to my wife, their cider is lovely. I don't drink and they had N/A options, which was lovely. You can also bring your own picnic too should you want to stay for a while, which you totally will. The grounds are lush with fresh orchards and plenty of places to sit and relax. There's even hammocks! We will definitely be back with a picnic, books, journals, and other relaxing things to enjoy while sitting outside. The staff are just as lovely as the grounds and very friendly. You can get tasting flights or individual ciders.

Our group had a great visit at Dragon's Head. Most of us did their $12 tastings of five ciders of our choice. We were warmly greeted and though our hostess was new, she did a wonderful job taking care of our large group of 12. Everything ran smoothly and she was great at keeping track of our progress. We learned more about the cider process and where they get their apples from. We really liked the port-like Pommeau and got a bottle of that at the end to share. They have a beautiful orchard that you can walk around in as well. Some nice seating areas scattered about or bring a picnic blanket. No food but maybe some snacks for purchase. We just came from lunch in town so I wasn't looking for snacks while I was there. I saw some people who looked like they brought their own picnic/food to enjoy there. No restroom on site but a porta-potty.

Google
What a nice place! Serene, peaceful, relaxing and in a park-like setting. After learning about how much work is involved in making cider vs wine, we appreciated every sip of the cider especially the“Kingston Black Cider,” which was recommended by a local person we met during a day trip to Vashon Island. The cider was absolutely delicious and the experience very lovely!

This is a wonderful hidden gem! The staff are lovely and this is a beautiful location. The cider is next level, not what we were expecting but a very elevated experience and flavours. Dragon’s Head are making some truly amazing cider here.

Google
Delicious selection of dry ciders! I've had them all there's not one I don't like. Nice folks, and the orchard is a great hang out spot in the summer.

Google
The cider here is exquisite and fairly priced. They have a wide variety of ciders made from apples and pears. They don't use any additional sugar or flavorings, so the cider has a pure, dry taste. That said, they are really complex due to the varietals of apples or the fermenting process the brewers use. We did a flight of 5 2-oz pours for $12. You do the flight in an outdoor area with picnic tables, a pond, and hammocks. It's a tranquil setting, and you can even walk around the orchard. You can also buy glasses and bottles. There is plenty of parking nearby, and it's easy to find on the map. No food here for sale except for some packaged snacks.

Absolutely the Top Tier, Crème de la crème, BEST Cidery in all of WA State, maybe even the world. There isn't a cider from Dragonshead I've tried yet that I haven't wanted to drink the whole bottle to myself. If you're local or visiting, you HAVE to take a little day trip to the orchard's tasting room, wander the fields, swing in the hammocks, love on visiting dogs and watch the bullfrogs jumping in the pond. It's seriously, so lovely, There's also a new tasting room in town that serves food! The owner, Laura, is the sweetest human and is the kind of person who tracked down local distributors near me so I could purchase my favorite "Celebration" Cider for NYE, sparkling perry. We pop this for our wedding anniversary, New Years, and personal achievements. I'll be soo sad to ever move away from this place! Love Dragons head!

After a quick ferry from W Seattle, my son and I rode our bikes over from the Strawberry Festival in town, via the Gateway Trail, (way cool) which connects to 107th and their front gate What a fun day, and a "perfect pairing" to spend some quality...and quiet time here at this quaint and family owned orchard. It wasn't crowded, it was quiet, it was comfy. What a pleasure it was to see family's and friends spend quality time together visiting... and sipping. It was difficult to get up and leave, ( no...not because of the alcohol, or the bike seat), because of the peace we felt during our time here. I haven't seen my son sit that still...ever! We both had the "Wild Pét-Nat Cider", and it was my first time trying cider so, you should listen to my hip son's opinion instead. "Dude...its a wild fermented blend of French and English apples from their on-site orchard bro, and it even has a fresh and fruity quality, with a light effervescence to it. Whoa, check this out, it even has hints of fresh mango and candied orange peel. Oh man, seriously, like, dude, whoa, bro...we're gonna be sitting here a while" Cider and sons...good times! *the fine print: Semi-sweet. ABV 4.9% My turn now... "It was really delicious" WOW

Yelp
I've been a fan of Dragon's Head for a long time, but this was my first time at their physical location. Incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful staff. She walked us through every cider we had questions about. The food is closer to tapas-style, and absolutely fantastic. The apple salad and chili were standouts. And, of course, the cider is superb. Highly recommend the Crimson Gold and Wild Fermented. Can't say enough great things about this location, the staff, the food, and the cider. A must visit if you are on Vashon.

Yelp
Beautiful property entrance. The long gated driveway led to a residential home with a warehouse barn for brewing. Odd there was not an established indoor tasting room, just a single table amongst the equipment chaos. Randomly placed outside are old weathered picnic tables to sip on the ciders. With a couple RVs parked next to them have it a feel of camping rather than a cidery. Not much of a destination experience with a grand name to pair the perry of Dragon's Head. Dry to taste, tiny bubbles ;)

Yelp
Great spot for cider! They have quite a few varieties to choose from and you can get it on tap or from a bottle. The outdoor space is a very nice spot to spend a sunny afternoon. It was well worth a stop!

Yelp
Dragon's Head is a great cider experience. Definitely call ahead to get a spot in the outdoor tasting room. It was a group of picnic tables in a little grotto a few paces from the building. We worked our way through a variety of ciders. They have one that will match the palate of everyone in your group. I'm glad the weather was nice while we were there. Great ciders, great service!

Yelp
LOVED this place! We noticed a sign as passing thru town and it peaked our interest. So happy to changed our route to include a quick visit to Dragon's Head. It's just a few minutes from town and an absolutely lovely property. We tried a few different ciders and were surprised at out different and absolutely delicious they all were! We sat at a picnic table and enjoyed the peaceful beauty of the orchard. If you like cider, or want to try perry, make a stop here! The staff was also absolutely wonderful and friendly.

Yelp
We visited the tasting room downtown to do a cider tasting and the staff was great. Explained all the ciders in detail and shared really cool facts about them. I learned new things about what kinds of ciders I liked and got to try lots of tasty varieties. The food was also delicious, I can't stop thinking about the apple-manchego salad we had!

Yelp
They have a wide variety of cider but you have to come early to get a tasting. They have a limited number of tastings available so either make a reservation or come early. Tons of outdoor seating available!

Yelp
Our second and lost cider stop on the island was at Dragon's Head Cider. We dropped in on a Saturday afternoon (around 1:00pm). The place had a handful of people (even a group of seniors) but luckily, the grounds are so spacious that you can wander around and sit at a few picnic tables/hammock spots. The taproom itself is dinky with only one table inside. Cider tasting is $10.00 US/person which gets you 5 samples and you get to keep the glassware. Not sure why they don't just charge you $5.00 US as an option. Tasting fee is waived if you buy THREE bottles. Their bottles range in the $15.00 US to $28.00 US and they also do grunt/growler refills. There's a small bit of merchandise. Their grunt bottle ($6.00 US) was cool. They also randomly had eggs for purchase ($7.00 US for a dozen). - Sparkling perry - méthode traditionelle - similar mouth feel to a champagne. Light in flavour. - Wild fermented - the slightest hint of a sour note. - Heritage rosé - this was our favourite from the ciders we tried. More full bodied and we detected a hint of berry. - Columbia crabapple - didn't get much tartness from the crabapple. - Pommeau - this was one of their sweeter ciders. Brandy note is prominent. Come for the relaxing, chill grounds but DH's ciders didn't blow us away.

Yelp
A scenic little orchard with amazing cider! There is also a spacious and well-distanced outdoor seating area. 1) Service (+): Dragon's Head Cider takes reservations by email and allows limited walk-in visitors. It was decently busy on a sunny Saturday afternoon. After getting seated at an outdoor table, the staff will come by to take your orders. 2) Ambiance (+): With "A Midsummer Night's Dream" vibes complete with string lights and lawn chairs, socially distant seating, and mandatory mask wearing, this spot gets an A+ for ambiance. The bathrooms here are porter potties, however. 3) Drinks (+): There is an extensive list of pear and apple ciders, all made locally. You can either order by the glass, by the bottle, or opt for the $10 flight tasting. I highly recommend the tasting, which comes with 5 generous pours and a glass tumbler for you to take home. I tried the Sparkling Perry, the Perry, Rose Cider, and Manchurian - my favorite was the Sparkling Perry, a light and not too sweet sparkling pear cider. 5) Value for Money (+): At price points of $10 for a tasting and tumbler, $10 for cider by the glass and $24 for full sized bottles, the prices here are great!

Yelp
If you like ciders or just an nice picnic spot, then come to Dragon's Head. Fields and orchards make this a great spot to just visit. They have tables, chairs and I was told a blanket to lay on so you can enjoy a glass or bottle of cider. Down to the real business, cider. They make some great cider here. They do a tasting of 4 for $8 or 3 bottle purchased. They had an sample if 8 ciders with 4 made with apple sourced right there. Their ciders aren't made from 1 or 2 variety of apple but many (I think one had over 10) producing a complex flavor.

Yelp
Had every cider this side of the Mississippi? Well Dragon's Head Cider is still worth the visit. We grabbed a bite from town (Gravy) and brought it down to this gorgeous location. As you approach the gates, you know you're headed somewhere special (as if the name wasn't cool enough on its own). As you pull in, you can park to the left or further down in the roundabout. One thing we learned was that you should probably call ahead to reserve a spot for a tasting as they were full when we arrived on the first sunny and warm Saturday of the year (4/17/21). The staff was apologetic that we couldn't get a tasting but poured us tastes of at least 5 of their ciders. We prefer dry ciders which are not too sweet and we found a couple that we loved. Their Perry's (pear cider) was executed to greatness. The Island Perry ($22 - bottle) and the Kingdom ($18 - bottle) offered us a nice afternoon. The Island Perry is a wild fermented pear cider which is complex and dry (Probably should have grabbed a bottle or two to go). The Kingdom cider is basic and complex at the same time (am I allowed to say that?) taking a sip is like biting into an apple, an apple with thick skin and a juicy inside. It is made with English bittercup apples grown on site. The best part are their grounds, Beautiful, and as you sit on the sprawled benches or loungers, you're taken away from your daily life as you enjoy the birds singing. They were encouraging of letting our dogs run free. Even though we couldn't get in for a tasting, they have many extra benches, picnic tables and loungers at your disposal that are first come first serve.

Yelp
First time on this place and on the island. It wasn't as difficult as I thought to get to it. A short and nice ferry ride and then a short drive and you're there. Their tasting is quite unique in that they have someone occasionally stopping by your table to explain and pour the cider for you. The cider itself was very good and a bit on the strong side but pleasant nonetheless. Tip: bring your own food or better yet do a picnic

Yelp
My wife and I were wandering around town and saw a sandwich board that advertised ider tasting. My wife suggested we try it out. So after a long trip to the Vashon Bookstore (recommend the visit) we moseyed our way over to the cidery. We drove but if my wife hadn't been 36 weeks pregnant we would have walked as it is only 1 mile from town.(She didn't partake in tasting dont worry) After seeing The entrance was unexpected after seeing a run down piece of plywood with the word "cider" and an arrow pointing to the right spray painted on it. You then approach a beautiful gated entrance with their logo and I had to stop and take a picture of the gate. It's a gated orchard with the cider tasting room just up the drive. There is a pond you can sit next to or some picnic tables outside but no indoor seating and no heating elements or propane heaters which is a HUGE downfall and oversight if you are a company with a garage tasting room and the only available seating is outside and you are open in the winter. The tasting though. Such a great price! It is only $10 and you get 5 ciders plus a souvenir glass! And you get to pick ANY 5 which is great as they are all not equally priced. This cidery focuses on semi-dry to dry ciders and are a bit purist because they only have the fruit in the cider and no other flavors. Which is absolutely fine because they do a phenomenal job on that niche. It is a beautiful property and I will come back when its warmer. I would not recommend coming here on a rainy or cold day as they have nothing to help you endure the elements.

Yelp
We had a blast visiting Dragon's Head Cider today. Walked in without an appointment and had no problem finding a spot to taste. Tasting fee is $12 and waived with a purchase of 3 bottles ($15-20 each). Ciders were all delicious and the staff was wonderful and helpful. The location is beautiful, with picnic tables and lounge chairs to sit at and enjoy the tranquility. Very dog friendly as well.

Yelp
This is such a great business to visit while adventuring around Vashon Island. It is located pretty close to the town center and has a lot of grounds for which you can explore casually with some of your cider tastings which I loved. The tasting room itself is very small and casual, and you get five tastings for $10 which I found to be exceptional value especially since you get to keep the tasting glass which is really gorgeous. I find it pretty difficult to find good ciders in the US so I was delighted that the ciders at this business are really good. In particular I really enjoyed the crab apple cider which was to my preference. I also tried one of the Pommeau but I'm not a huge brandy fan so it wasn't to my taste, but I am not going to knock them because of my preference. I ended up finding their hammocks on the grounds and was able to swing there in peace and quiet for a while which was awesome. The staff were friendly and very knowledgeable. I will definitely be back to visit this business when on the island again and look forward to being able to purchase some of their cider on the mainland too!

Yelp
What a fantastic ciderie! Dragon's Head Cider is located in the western outskirts of the town of Vashon at what looks like a residence. Despite that they have a tasting room here in which you can enjoy their variety of ciders. I went here and sampled many of the ciders that they had available to taste. What really sold me was a perry cider they had with apply brandy. It was potent but a thrill to drink... truly a warming delight. But if you get a bottle of it it's best that it be shared as a whole bottle on your own maybe too potent! Dragon's Head Cider can also be bought at select stores so either visiting with the staff or investigating their website will tell you where to buy it. If you do the tasting you will be given a tasting glass from what you sipped from to during the tasting which is a nice perk! Check rates for a tasting... it isn't too expensive but may vary depending what ciders they have on hand. In addition to the glass you can buy other swag like t-shirts as well. The staff are extremely informative and will give you plenty of back story to the emerging cider industry in the country as well as their own history as a company. I highly recommend this place... a must stop when visiting Vashon.

Yelp
Just a wonderful experience in every way. The owners and staff are exceptionally warm and welcoming and the the ciders are absolutely delicious. We first stumbled upon Dragon's Head by chance on a day they were not open for tasting. Yet the staff stopped what they were doing to talk about the history of the site and the process of making cider. They then let us buy a couple of bottles to take home and try. We were hooked of course and promptly came back (with friends!) for tasting. We became club members on the spot and make sure to stop in and say hi whenever we visit Vashon.

Zachary R.

Yelp
This is the best cider tasting we have been to! Nicest hosts, amazing cider, and great outdoor venue. Will be returning!!

Kayla K.

Yelp
Beautiful outdoor environment but the customer service was lacking. We did not taste all the cider that was available because in the outdoor environment it was difficult to fit in for a tasting.

Yelp
After our wonderful brunch at Bramble house, we wanted to continue to enjoy Vashon island! We made our way to Dragonhead cider. We were immediately set at ease with the ambience, it felt like a mix of Northern Minnesota (ponds, trees) and Napa valley. We were warmly greeted by Karen when we went into the tasting room. We enjoyed all 5 ciders (hubs like the Manchurian) I liked the wild. After tasting we each got a glass of cider and sat by the peaceful pond. A truly lovely experience!
google avatar

Ed A.

Yelp
The setting is so pretty and the service was friendly and attentive. We are novices with cider and enjoyed trying several selections with good pours. We bought a bottle of the Rose and the Heritage. To us a $10 tasting fee is great, however you have to buy 3 bottles to waive a tasting fee. Enjoyed the experience.
google avatar

Brennan J.

Yelp
This tasting room wasn't much to speak of. 1 bar height table and a picnic table outside. Website offered learning about their orchard and process but didn't really offer anything like that. The ciders were pretty good and a lot like others in the Northwest. We made the trip and $30 ferry and was overall anticlimactic.
google avatar

Tom T.

Yelp
The tasting room is really small (one table and a counter), dog-friendly and so quiet you could hear a pin drop. You can order a flight of four ciders that the server will pour for you, one at a time, while describing each one. You can keep the tasting glass when you're done. The ciders were excellent, but I would have preferred that all four were served at the same time, so we could sit outside and leisurely work our way through the flight.
google avatar

Blair A.

Yelp
Awesome cider, cute little tasting room. Gas heater for the cold days. Feels like being at a cool hip winery but the drinks are made of apples!

Yelp
Came here and got the place to ourselves. The owner was sweet and offered a great recommendation for dinner for my birthday. Come and enjoy their cider and dog friendly property! A must do if you're staying on the island!!

Yelp
Wonderful casual and personable cindery! We really enjoyed sitting outside at the picnic tables

Yelp
Cider was great, the employee was really nice and friendly. The tasting was $5 per person and you get an awesome glass. It was definitely fun and chill atmosphere. I plan on returning next time I'm visiting.

Yelp
Incredible Cider, so local you can see it. If you like the jammy sugary commercial cider, keep driving. This is the real deal. Wonderful owners, a fun time and a taste sensation experience. You won't leave empty handed. Just a quick stop, off the beaten path. Loved it.
