"When the Norwegians (who ruled what was then Denmark-Norway) captured James Hepburn, the Earl of Bothwell, in the mid-1500s, they imprisoned him at Dragsholm Castle. The isolation drove Hepburn mad, and he was ultimately tied to a pillar and left to die. To this day, his spirit cannot leave the estate. Guests sometimes see him riding horseback through the grounds at night. He is accompanied by the White Lady, believed to be the ghost of Celina Bovles, a young girl who was imprisoned by her father in the castle's dungeon after becoming pregnant before marriage. During a 1930s renovation, workers supposedly found a skeleton in a white dress within the castle's walls. Many believe it to have been the remains of Celina." - Travel + Leisure Editors

"Located near Nekselø Bay, the much-rebuilt medieval castle is believed to be haunted by the many figures who were imprisoned there, including James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell — the third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots — and the last Bishop of Roskilde, who had owned the castle before being ousted of his title during the Protestant Reformation. Paranormal encounters often occur with two women: the White Lady and the Gray Lady. The former is believed to be the ghost of a young girl who was imprisoned in the castle after her father found out she was pregnant and the latter is said to be that of a servant who died shortly after complaining of a mysterious toothache." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Extraordinary experience. We booked the gourmet-stay with a night in the castle and the Michelin gourmet dinner. We had matching wine menu and started out adding a glass of Louis roederer batch 244 champagne to the snacks. The food was exceptional, well deserving of the star. The wine menu was very well matched to the dishes and the sommelier was very good at introducing the wines. What really also set this experience apart from other Michelin experiences I had this year, was their ability to serve flavourful and outstanding dishes while accommodating my allergy towards onion and garlic (Which meant I had to have special sauces etc). The experience lasted 6 hours, which was maybe a bit too long as we were quite full 4 hours in. This meant I couldn’t finish half of my wineglasses and the last 5 dishes of the experience. It seems most people was there for 5-6 hours, but I presume the special sauces for me required some extra time for the chefs which is very understandable. The location was beautiful in the countryside and I would definitely recommend to always book an overnight experience here. In addition you had the castle for yourself to roam around and use the facilities, consisting of game rooms, various couch areas, a bar and a museum. The breakfast in the stables was also great, but it was hard to get up early enough when we first finished dinner at 1 AM. So we chose the late breakfast and missed the museum guide. Overall - we absolutely LOVED it, and will definitely come again.

Truly a delightful rural weekend at Dragsholm slot. We did not realize that we were staying in the castle itself, and felt that their website could have been more specific. We were initially disappointed but got use to the rural views, rather than the grander castle rooms with the common rooms for reading, billiards etc||The rooms outside of the castle are okay, not really what we expected. Rooms do not have what I would consider essential items. Reading lights beside the bed for example are absent, need to use ceiling lighting if you want to read, and the light switch to turn off is on only one side of the bed. Two towels are offered in the tiny tiny bathrooms, water is not replenished in the room. ||What made the stay special was the location, with lots of hiking trails and the well trained staff at the front desk. Truly 10 out of 10

Went for a small day trip from summerhouse to visit the castøe and have lunch. So beautiful area, buildings and just stunning in every way. We would love to come back and spend a Night one time. Great outdoor areas, several places to eat and awesome historic buildings.

Opt for the gourmet stay, you won't be disappointed. 🤗 Great service from check in and all the way until you leave. Beaches on walking distance, dog friendly overall! Perhaps a little too hot in the rooms, but hey it's 800 years old so you really don't mind that AC is missing. Late breakfast is just awesome as well.

I recently had a terrible experience with Dragsholm, and I’m utterly disappointed. I booked a castle room which was my preference. However, due to a major error in their booking system—an error that was entirely their fault— a castle room was not available and I was stuck with an estate room only option. I made it explicitly clear from the start of my communication with Dragsholm customer service that I did not want the estate room. I was not alerted until more than a day later about the booking error with surrounding travel dates already planned. I understand errors happen but when one this large happens some sort of compensation should be offered as a true apology. To make matters worse, their so-called “customer service” was nothing more than a string of insincere apologies with no real effort to make up for the inconvenience they caused me. It’s shocking that a place with such a reputation would fail so miserably at resolving an issue they created. There was no compensation offered beyond the empty words of apology, which frankly just added insult to injury. I expected far better treatment and a genuine attempt to rectify the situation, but I got neither. Thanks to this experience, I am completely turned off from ever visiting Dragsholm again. If you’re considering staying here, beware—if anything goes wrong, you’ll be left high and dry, with no support and no recourse. Save your money and go somewhere that actually values its customers.

The restaurant is simply perfect - excellent😄 - come and eat, come and have such a pleasant and delightful time. ||||But stay away from the hotel part - mould in the rooms (at least in our room and bathroom as well), bad and unprofessional guiding to the hotel and its facilities and a strange closing of all light in the hotel in the evening making you wonder if you are a welcomed guest or a pestilence. We have been at the place 5 times before, in the better days, between 2008-2022. At that time it was really a great place to stay, now it is just a shadow of a place that once was great.

Stayed for one night but wish it had been more. Food both at dinner in the bistro and at breakfast next morning was exceptional and the service was to match. ||Estate rooms have very large bathrooms with huge showers. Ours had four shower heads.

You get exactly what you look for if you want to live in a castle. The best mix of old history and modernity of a quality hotel. Dinner at Bistro is a must and don’t forget to explore the castle! ||Works to stay with older children but probably best for couples only, especially foodies and history enthusiasts.
