Best Cheap Eats and Affordable Restaurants in Dallas | Eater Dallas

"With two locations in Dallas, this cafe serves an excellent breakfast, lunch, dinner, and brunch on weekends. It’s a neighborhood spot that gives diners a good sense of community in its brightly lit dining rooms. Pop in for a $14 Southwest salad with grilled chicken, $15 pasta pignoli, or $15 shrimp tacos." - Courtney E. Smith

While in East Dallas, I was feeling a bit peckish and that is when I came across the Dream Cafe. The atmosphere is swanky, with turquoise booths and its own bar, it is more upscale than my usual breakfast spot. I ordered the Farmer's omelet with orange juice and when the server brought my juice, I noticed it was a large($5) so I asked him to bring me a small OJ($3). He said he would only charge for the small one and let me keep the large juice. That is the way to impress me when I should've been specific with my order from the beginning. Dream cafe offers al fresco dining, but I opted for the cool tropical decor inside on this warm August morning. The omelet was huge and tasty with caramelized onions, bell pepper and sausage. The biscuit was equally large, about the size of a baseball served with whipped butter. The hash browns were crispy and crunchy, not too greasy. There was a mild sticker shock when the bill came; all this good stuff comes at a premium. Dream Cafe won't replace my regular greasy spoon, but if I ever get a date for breakfast, I'll take her here.

I can’t say anything good. Ordered a $20+ salad for takeout. They put hot shrimp on top of the mixed greens in the container. Lettuce was warm and wilted. Drove back to have remade. Got home and half of my shrimp are burnt. Used shrimp from first salad so they are old and cold. Cutting off the burnt parts now. What a joke -

We went to the location on Mockingbird Ln. While the food tasted fine, I have serious concerns about their attention to food safety. They served a medium/medium-rare hamburger to my daughter. My daughter ate half of the burger before we realized it was undercooked. We weren’t asked how we wanted it cooked. I guess it was our mistake to assume the burger would be cooked to 160, the minimum temperature required for safety.

Overall excellent vibe, good food, bad service. - The vibe for a Saturday brunch/lunch is great. Lots of customers and easy parking - Food is pretty good. They have good food selection, sweet, and drinks. - Service was probably the reason I’d doubt think to come back. The service was slow. She rarely checked on us. I had to remind them to get my drink, and they forgot customized items, especially I saw her wrote them down. We had to open a new ketchup bottle after asking for ketchup.

Great restaurant to have breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner. Great Coffees. Love their Matcha. Healthy food choices. Greek Burger is a must try.

Google
Steak and eggs for breakfast, yes please! The steak was well done for my request of medium, but my server made it right for me. Attentive staff. Good morning cup o joe. Also the patio vibe was nice, even on a windy day like today.

Came in for a late breakfast and decided on the avocado toast with 2 fried eggs and a biscuit with gravy. I also wanted to try one of their specialty juices with the turmeric but was informed that their juicer wasn't working that day. All my food came quickly, was delicious, and portions were great. The eggs were perfectly cooked and the avocado was fresh and easy to spread on the whole wheat bread. My server too was exceptional keeping my water glass filled each time she walked by. Will definitely return to try more of their healthy creations.

Yelp
First time trying Brunch at Dream Cafe. This place seems to get pretty busy, our wait time was just 15min. Not bad. The server and service were great as well. The food was actually really good and had great taste. The place its self has great ambience. I will definitely comeback to try something else on their menu.

Yelp
I came on a Friday morning, service was great. Everyone was really nice and the food was great!, I had the dream Benedict with a hash brown, will definitely come again!

Yelp
This place has a lovely ambiance and it's very spacious! We had a lovely brunch on a rainy day! I got the Monte Crisco and this is by far the best one I've had to date! Very savory and tasty, smooth with a well balance of flavors

Yelp
Such a bizarre experience! Ordered the eggs Benedict for breakfast. When they finally came, after about 30 minutes on an uncrowded day, the eggs were hard and overdone. Fine, sometimes things happen. I stopped our waitress and let her know of the issue. She said that she would bring me new eggs... this seemed strange but I accepted it. Sure enough, about 10 minutes later she brought out a bowl with two poached eggs sitting in a pool of water and left them on the table. I looked at her astounded and she just walked away. I really didn't believe that she intended for me to take the bad eggs off of my cold dish and put them... somewhere? Who knows where? and then put the newly delivered watery poached eggs on the stone cold dish in front of me and "make my own cold breakfast". I asked for the manager and he acted like that was perfectly normal. Having already been there for 45 minutes I just paid and left. So strange to me... will not be going back.

Yelp
Monday Brunch with my sister gone right! The country Benedict was delicious, our server was right: their fried chicken is amazing. Portions are huge by the way. We really wanted to try some pancakes but we were too full with just our plates. The restaurant has plenty of booths, high tables, and outdoor seating. Lovely spot. Our server was super kind and made our first time experience worth it!

Yelp
Service depends on the day. My friend and I meet there in the back about once a month. Twice we've had the manager on duty wait on us due to the bartender being "busy". We're in no rush but looking for a server is... not great. This last visit I ordered the Wedge salad and it wasn't a wedge - but it WAS over dressed with tasteless salad dressing. I'm not picky about my food but this was literally a bland salad drenched in a tasteless dressing. We'll be back but Ill order something different next time.

Yelp
Here is my review as a tourist trying The Dream Cafe for the first time: - I ordered the "you're so vegan" plate and it was disappointing because there was a lack of flavor and seasoning to the dish. From my perspective, I thought it was bland. - you must order the grapefruit mimosa ($6) because it's delicious and can get you tipsy really quick. - super cute patio that's perfect for instagram. - excellent customer service: the servers were kind and always checked in on us.

Yelp
This was my first time to visit this restaurant, unfortunately, I can't say I'll be visiting again. 12:00pm/Saturday/Brunch Parking: The area is nice, but it was mess for those who are not familiar. There is a parking lot very close to the diner, but guess what? To park, it's $25. Yeah, I think not! But hey, don't fret, they have a free two hour parking garage. That, too, was confusing, but there is a sweet lady who points you in the right direction when you finally find your way there. Group Seating: I was there with a group of ten, let's just say, make sure you get there on time if the reservation is in your name. The person who made the reservation was kindly helping some of the party, find the location and the parking. Those who were waiting inside told the management they were around the corner and instead of seating those who were there, after several minutes, they gave the table away. If no one from the party were there, I can better understand giving the table away, but the fact the party was there and it was still given away, didn't sit well with me. Food: As we were waiting for our table, I noticed several plates that looked absolutely scrumptious. I looked at the menu prior to that day, but of course, as soon as I looked at it again, I changed my choice. I wish, I didn't. Chicken and Waffles - I normally do not get chicken and waffles, but I wanted to try something new. The chicken, even by the look, was bland (per the picture). I don't believe the chicken had been marinated and for sure, the batter wasn't seasoned. The waffle, eh. It wasn't much to write home about. The taste was nice, but after several bites, I was done. I believe it was the texture that did me in, it wasn't light and fluffy (buttermilk). Notable mention: Several at my table ordered the club sandwich, it looked so good and they said it was delicious! Chai Latte w/ Cinnamon- I enjoyed it very much, the cinnamon really brought out the taste. Customer Service/Waitress/Gratuity: Even with the little bumps in the road, the customer service was great. The gentleman with green hair, and the sweet lady who helped us through the parking maze were standout. Our waitress was very sweet and very informative, but I feel the gratuity worked against her. They add a 20% grat. for large parties (per tkt), there were several who were actually going to tip higher than the 20%, but due to it being automatically added, they let that be the tip. Even with that being said, I do understand the point of gratuity, there are people who'd rather keep the tip money in their pocket, or simply not tip at all. The prices for the food and drinks, were very reasonable. Overall, it was a nice little afternoon out with friends, but I will not visit again.

Yelp
This was my first time going to this restaurant! It was on 8/9/23 at around 10:30 am. It's located in a nice shopping center with easy to find parking. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by a hostess which we asked to sit outside and it was really nice. It was first time we sat on the patio in a long time too and the ambience was really nice. I noticed a couple of TVs and there was a lot of shade which was invited especially with this heat. Our server was awesome. I don't remember his name though cause I was so hungry and focusing on the menus and I really love that you can go here on a weekday and have brunch just like it was a Saturday or Sunday. The waiter was on same page as me cause he offered me a mimosa and I went with the peach mo-mosa cause it's like having two in one glass. They also have a few options on flavors too so I have another good excuse to go back. He was attentive and we were in an out of here fairly quickly too. I ordered the New Yorker which was a salmon bagel and came with everything you need or could expect with it. The bagel was toasted perfectly too! I couldn't have done it better myself. I order and egg over medium which was also cooked perfectly. My BF got the Austin tacos which I tasted and they were delicious as well. He loved his too. The cost of the food was reasonable as well and filling but not too much was leftover on our plates when we were done. I would give it 5 stars but we will have to go back again soon as it's rare I give 5 stars on first review of a restaurant. I always look for consistency before I give 5 stars.

Yelp
Came here randomly one night for dinner with my boyfriend. The place is very cute and the staff are very nice. We started off with Chips and Spinach Queso and the Crab Cake Balls. Both were delicious! Then we got our side ceasar salads and it all went wrong. It was warm and the dressing was not good. He got the chicken pot pie which was basically chicken soup with a big biscuit in the middle. The flavor was also not good at all. Definitely not what you're expecting when you want a chicken pot pie. Finally, i got my cheeseburger which was very mediocre. Overcooked from what I asked for and the fries were not great either. Overall the place is nice and the staff are very kind but the food is a disappointment. Probably a great place to come have drinks and appetizers but that's about it.

M W.

Yelp
First timer here! Loved this place! Clean and such great service. Yanet was super attentive! She helped us with our order, refilled our water and asked us if we wanted a refill on our other drinks before we could even ask! I could come back just for her!! My kids enjoyed it too. We loved our food and the ambiance was great. No wait getting a table wither.

Yelp
This place is ok. If it was the only place open I'd go back but really only if I was desperate. Service was extremely lacking. Our waiter had tables inside and outside so our service suffered. The food was pretty bland. Just really not very good but not horrible. Prices are high for the quality.

Yelp
Dream Cafe was extremely disappointing. I was a regular at their Addison location for years and thought this location would be the same but it left a bad taste in my mouth, both physically and metaphorically. For some reason, the restaurant feels grimy all-throughout. From the sticky tables to the dead flies on the window sills, it's just not a pleasant experience for a hungry diner. During my visit, I ordered the cloud pancakes and they were brought out very burnt. I tried to drown those things in syrup but nothing helped mask the taste. I ended up having to send them back. We also had two of their fresh juices and, although they were supposed to be the same drink, one of them tasted awful. The typical warm service you'd expect was non-existent from the moment we stepped into the restaurant. The hostess barely spoke a word and seemed to be in a hurry to get back to using her phone at the host stand. If you're reading this, spare yourself the headache of dealing with all this and find another restaurant. I'm only giving it two stars because of my own personal nostalgia.

Yelp
Great service, friendly staff, excellent food. Had brunch on Saturday. Bustling/busy but great food and fast service. Very family friendly atmosphere.

Campbell P.

Yelp
If I could give negative stars I would. The service at this establishment was so terrible that I could barely enjoy the lukewarm pasta that they served. If Hell was a restaurant it would be Dream Cafe. There were babies screaming in my ear and the bathrooms smelled like a mix of chlorine and a landfill, not to mention that the door looked like someone tried kicking it down. The definite worst part of this dump was the service. I have never met more rude and lazy workers. First off, they never checked on us unless we raised our hands, which they ignored. Secondly, we asked for our checks because we had lives to live, and they took 30 minutes just to take our cards. I tried standing up to ask for a pen and was shot down with "Go sit at a table" by a middle aged bald man in a mustard yellow shirt who wasn't even our server. If this was the last restaurant on earth I would go eat scraps off the road. I felt discriminated against for being a teenager and I hope no one else has the torture of eating here

Mr L.

Yelp
The food is really good. Will definitely be back for the Chicken n Waffles and the Shrimp and Grits. Wonderful staff and manager. Open window seating. Really calm and cool.

Yelp
We've been here 3 times over the past 2-3 months and each time has been progressively worse. Today we sat down and it took 10 min just to order drinks (two black coffee's) so we went ahead and placed our food order. The coffee's came just as we were getting our food (10-15 min), and we never received one of the food items we ordered. Would have asked for it but was ready to leave by that time. The staff is very friendly but the overall service is lacking and the food is mid, IMHO.
google avatar

Jenae B.

Yelp
Ok so I wanted to give this place 4 stars, however when you start my dining experience off with a dirty water bottle it's kind of hard to recover. The staff was friendly and the food was good. I sat outside which was ok. The waitress bought me a little contraption to keep the flies away. I enjoyed the meal. The chicken was nicely seasoned and tender, and my bacon and eggs were cooked crispy the way I liked them, but cleanliness is very important when serving the public especially in the era of Covid. Please do better!

Yelp
Came on a Sunday around 1. There was about a 20-30min wait so we ordered mimosas at the bar while we waited. Once seated, we had great service. We ordered the Monte cristo which was just okay and the Elvis which was really good. Definitely recommend the Elvis. The hash browns were very greasy and way too buttery.

Yelp
Haven't been in years due to previous experiences, bad mistake on my part. Service was the reason for 5 stars today. We were a party of 4 straight from a strenuous jaunt at White Rock Lake. Outside was perfect for us. Despite the traffic noise, the breeze made it quite nice on this late August morning! Our waitstaff were attentive, accommodating and very helpful. The food was very good! Popovers, French Toast and eggs were perfectly cooked! The grilled granola topping for the French Toast is amazing with the real maple syrup! The strawberries, crème fraiche plus powdered sugar made this some of the best French Toast I've ever had! Cost was about $15 per person. Plenty of parking, but could be a challenge later in the day with the other establishments at lunch and dinner.

Jess N.

Yelp
Queso came out nice and hot and they offered more chips when we ran out. The chicken from the chicken and waffles was nicely cooked, wasn't dry while the waffle was pretty ordinary. The chicken enchiladas were great, but I did prefer the green salsa so I wished they had let us choose which salsa it came with, but otherwise was enjoyable. Service was quick and attentive.

Yelp
Food is delicious, nice casual atmosphere for family and friends. The staff at all locations are very sweet and helpful. I definitely recommend the beignets.

Beverly W.

Yelp
My sic is way too loud. Poor service. Rude waiter. Coughed so much and did not wash hands that I could see. Grossed me out that he touched my food. So-so food. Over priced. Patio not heated, so I could not go outside away from loud music.

Yelp
This place came recommended by some friends and when I called I was told there wasn't a wait so we headed on over not really knowing what we were getting ourselves into. We walked in, we're seated immediately and given some menus to review. Our waitress was friendly however I can't say she was attentive. We asked about the cost of a craft of mimosas verses a glass, she had to go check - it took her a while to come back so when she finally came back we placed drink orders as well as appetizers. I asked her about what was popular, she gave some suggestions and left. The peach mimosa came to the table dropped off by someone else and we poured up our own drinks however there were a few other drinks missing - we had ordered tea and a coke as well. Neither came and our waitress was still no where to be seen. The appetizers were dropped off at the table and we asked that some plates be brought to the table but they weren't brought to the table until after the waitress stopped by to check on us and we once again asked about plates, the tea and the coke. (Side note - the mimosa is not something we would order again). So we got the beignets and the pot stickers - I can't tell someone what to do with their food but the beignets would have been better with a dipping sauce or coffee - the pot stickers needed something else besides the side of soy sauce. So I got the Elvis - was not a fan - the middle of the biscuit was doughy and undercooked, the white gravy tasted like the flour hadn't been properly cooked out of it, and I ended up sending it back after one bite. The austin plate (don't quote me on that) had a sauce on it that was spicy - like if you don't like spicy - that's not the plate for you - the chicken and waffles had a huge chicken breast on it but that's about the big wow - it wasn't like we went to flavor town and we were hit with a flavor bomb. I also must say that they have a beautiful patio but they need to figure out what to do about the flies because sitting inside and having to swat flies during your whole meal isn't a great experience. No refill on the drinks as once again we didn't see our waitress until she brought the ticket. We can check that off the list as we have been there, done that.

Chelsea O.

Yelp
Love this location, very clean and well managed. I wish they had a few more options on their menu; but I tried the Elvis. The biscuit was a little over cooked which threw everything off. Husband really liked the pesto chicken salad sandwich. Comes with fries. Will try again and order something else.
google avatar

Melody T.

Yelp
Service was great! We came in on a Sunday with a party of 7 and our server was so awesome! She was very accommodating to our needs and ensured we were all comfortable and good! Food came out at hot and fresh! Loved that I could order one pancake a side of bacon and one egg! It was the perfect amount! Ordered a Bloody Mary at the bar ..spicy with no olives and extra celery! Did not feel rushed to leave and happy everyone could get a separate check! We left a great tip and will be back soon! Cheers! Great for outside or inside dining!

Yelp
Relaxed, East Dallas cafe, child and animal friendly patio. Good drinks and the Parmesan Bella mushroom strips are the best share, or entree. Excellent servers. They want you to enjoy yourself and no matter how slammed the weekends are at DC, the servers are collected, profesional and attentive. Menu could use some new items, sort of limited on entree options for vegans; the square meal with black beans and brown rice, meh . We can always find something, but a seasonal menu change might be good for a change. Dream Cafe staff is some of the friendliest in the city,, and gladly accommodate us when we ask for for something special..like us... The scrambler is my favorite and the cloud cakes are awesome, but I prefer the strawberry French toast!
google avatar

Eli T.

Yelp
This is a cute brunch spot with plenty of parking and the service is great. I've had the chicken and waffles and they are very delicious. I recently had the shrimp tacos and they were pretty good but the beans and rice were underwhelming.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Local breakfast place that has a lot of different items to pick from. Got a hazelnut iced coffee and the eggs Benedict, both were really good. Even tho I don't think they were the best eggs Benedict I've had. My sister got the huevos rancheros and really liked them. My husband ordered the strap hanger aka a meat lovers breakfast. We also ordered the cloud cakes which were good but felt like they could've been better. I only say that because I love pancakes, so I'm pretty picky about them. Something I really liked was their service. Our waitress was very friendly and super attentive. All in all a good breakfast place.
google avatar

Josh A.

Yelp
Bugs came out of the syrup dispenser onto our kids food. Ruined the whole experience. When I mentioned it to the waiter he said ok we will get you more. Food in general was bland and lukewarm.
google avatar

Kirk K.

Yelp
This place is great. The Monte Cristo is delicious. It's become the destination spot that my family goes to celebrate Mother's Day every year.

M E.

Yelp
Great food and service. Low wait time. Highly recommend. Monte Cristo is good. Pancakes are good. Huevos rancheros were good.

M B.

Yelp
The chicken and biscuit benedict is to die for. They don't take reservations, but if you come for brunch before the church crowd hits at 11/12, it's not too much of a wait.
google avatar

Jane Z.

Yelp
I came here with my partner on a Saturday afternoon and the restaurant was almost completely empty, although it was around 3 PM. I ordered the Austin tacos and my partner ordered a burger. Portion sizes were generous but our food was pretty average. My eggs were overcooked and underseasoned. Will try again another time and order something else, but overall I was pretty disappointed.

Janice S.

Yelp
Just had breakfast at the Dream Cafe and it was very disappointing. What started out good didn't end well. We were seated right away and it wasn't very busy but was very loud. (Table of 2 Fri 10:55 am ) our waiter brought water immediately and then he disappeared for over 45 min. We had to flag someone down to get our order in. Food was ordered and eaten. It was Ok. But then we got to wait again to get a check. It was almost 12:30 by the time we got out of there. I have never left such a small tip or written a bad review before. This was very dissapointing and will be my last visit!
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
I've been here quite a few times in the past, and it's always been great. My go-to is the crab cake Benedict, although their French toast and chicken and waffles are delicious as well. I also love that I can get good brunch food even in the middle of the week, not just on the weekend. Today's crab Benedict with hash browns was perfect, as usual. The eggs are poached perfectly, and the crab cakes are moist and savory. The hash browns are surprisingly light and crispy, and did not feel heavy or greasy at all. I'll be back again!
google avatar

Jaye H.

Yelp
This place is great! The New Yorker with eggs was perfect. The lox was smoky and my server, Jonathan, was polite and efficient.
google avatar

Richie D.

Yelp
I checked out The Dream Cafe after a great work out at F45 in the same shopping center with friends. I had their Eggs Benedict called "90210" with artichokes, and it was okay. Service was friendly and the cafe had a nice brunch, family friendly vibe. But would I order the 90210 Eggs Benedict? I wouldn't and stick with the breakfast basics like scramble eggs, toast, pancakes, etc.
google avatar

TS M.

Yelp
A great little spot with lots of fresh air and quality food! Finding a decent place to eat is getting harder, but this place has been here for a long time and the quality of food & service is why!

Yelp
We made a wrong turn on Mockingbird and wound up at the Dream Cafe for brunch! We had a table outside since it wasn't 100 degrees and Jose was our server. He was attentive, funny and did a great job of making us feel welcome! I ordered off the kids menu as I am on Semaglutide and eat very little at one sitting. This wasn't a problem at all, I got the Kids Dreamboat. Scrambled eggs with broccoli and ham in half a popover. Side of fruit and yogurt. My husband got the Austin Tacos, both were delicious. We started our brunch with 2 of the biggest mimosas I have ever seen!! Really enjoyed it and will be back.

Nancy G.

Yelp
Food: 4 / Service: 4 / Ambiance: 4 This was first time visit to the Dream Cafe. It's located in a busy shopping center, with multiple busy restaurants and shops adjacent. Parking could be a test of your patience, particularly on Saturday, which is when we went. We had to circle to get a parking space. It's a bright, very LOUD, restaurant with a very nice patio space. We were not asked if we wanted to sit outside on this beautiful day, instead we were taken to the bar area, where the tables all have bar height seats.. The service was slow, to the point that I said, to my daughter, that maybe we won't be eating here. When our server did show up, she was friendly, and in her defense I think she may have actually been doing double duty as bartender too, but not 100% on that, I just saw her back there a lot. Their menu has a nice variety, with popovers which is unusual. I had Chicken and Waffle, and my daughter got the Monte Cristo with Hash Browns. I did order one of the popovers, as my entree didn't come with one. The popover with the Strawberry Butter was very good, the Chicken was very juicy, tasty and large. The waffle was good, sweet, but not served with butter. The Monte Cristo sandwich, according to my daughter, was very good and the Hash Browns, she shared with me, were very good. The gravy that was served with the Chicken and Waffle, was good after I doctored it up with salt and pepper. They are pricey, but the portions of all that we got, and what we saw coming out of the kitchen, were sizeable. We had leftovers, so takeaway was necessary. I'd give them another try, but I think I'd like to sit on the patio, where maybe it wasn't so loud.

Yelp
The first time I heard that song in my head it was a song that I was thinking of when you were in your car and you said that it was a good songs for me ice creamy cream ice joy can

Yelp
It was my first time at Dream Cafe! The staff was great! We went for brunch... the omelettes were pretty great. You definitely need to have the popover with strawberry spread! My friend really enjoyed the cheesy grits! Anyway, go try it out!

Yelp
From the convenient location to the delicious food to the friendly staff, The Dream Cafe - Lakewood serves up a great dining experience! My family recently ate here for dinner and we enjoyed everything we ordered. Their menu offers something for everyone, even vegans and vegetarians. I recommend the garden stir fry with tofu and the rest of my family recommends the blue plate and wild fire sandwich! I did feel surprised, however, at the emptiness of the restaurant on a weekend night but, we ate fairly early so I assume it got busier as the evening progressed. I know they stay busy for brunch on the weekends. Even though we didn't need to wait for a table, I would willingly wait to eat there again!

Tori K.

Yelp
came explicitly for a few recommendations and they were out of several things which was not explained until after ordering and then waiting 10 minutes. Paid and then were asked to leave immediately (less than 5 mins after our check being picked up- due to a wait for the patio, it was a weekday and not a single person was waiting in addition to three open tables) , despite still having drinks at the table half full. We both drove over 30+ minutes to be here and service was lacking for sure. food was decent but no better than a local place a lot closer.

Yelp
Waitress was wonderful. Food was so good. I had the chicken fried chicken with green beans and okra. Great small town cafe.

Yelp
Used to be our go to for breakfast. Last 2 times we've had awful service , and the food was below average. They served my popover that was burnt and crunchy. 90210 eggs Benny the eggs were not, runny. Too bad. This place was outstanding and it's now not worth the wait in line

Yelp
Dream Cafe was definitely what me and my friends needed after a long Saturday night out on the town. They make sure that you walk away highly satisfied. The service is great and the food does not disappoint. When you think breakfast, Dream Cafe should be top of the list.
