The Best Dishes Eater SF Editors Ate This Week: Spring 2023 - Eater SF

"I write about the pop-ups I’ve been tracking throughout the Bay Area on a semi-regular basis, so I was excited to read an email from a reader suggesting pop-ups worth checking out. The new-to-me D.R.E.A.M Doughnuts turned up in the East Bay on a recent Sunday, and on the occasion of my sister’s birthday, I brought her a box of doughnuts and other goodies, while also picking up a few treats for myself. Everything was delicious, but what stuck out was this “Everything” Croughie — a muffin-shaped croissant. This savory pastry came filled with cream cheese, smoked salmon, chives, and dill, plus a sprinkling of everything spice that stuck to the croissant dough. The croughie had a nice shatter to it, and the cream cheese filling was just the right texture, not too cold or solid from a night in the fridge, with pieces of smoked salmon in every bite. The flavors played nicely together in that classic way that cream cheese and smoked salmon do, made altogether greater in its croissant-muffin home. As a secondary mention, D.R.E.A.M. also offers a wild longanisa Danish, complete with a mini pipette filled with cane vinegar. Some might think vinegar is a strange addition, or perhaps unnecessary, but the acid helps cut the richness of the longanisa and takes the flavors to another level. Both savory items were delicious and inventive, and well worth tracking down. D.R.E.A.M. Doughnuts, San Francisco" - Lauren Saria

Favorite place in Berkeley ❤️ cheap, tasty, loved the atmosphere and they were super nice about EVERYTHING. I spent a lot of mornings just hanging out there alone or with my friends. God only knows how much I miss their donuts 😭❤️ my friend drove me there at 6 am in the morning my last day in the Bay just so I could have them one last time. Please if you’re in town you HAVE to try them! You won’t be disappointed. Their donuts just melt in your mouth!

Google
This place looks like it’s been there a while and parts of it remind me of an old Woolworth dining counter. The cooked foods are basic, affordable and homey, donuts are popular! The shop is also open early, like 4am early on some days! One of my favorite places.

Google
Lives up to its name. Fluffy gorgeous donut texture. Great dough, texture, and raise on the bread with all sorts of classic donuts. Not necessarily the same type of 'boutique' feel with elderberry, matcha, trendy flavors. But -amazing- mostly old fashioned -incredibly- done donuts. Also the breakfast sandwiches are good if you are looking for protein and something to balance out the sugar. Also. Specials before 8am for paying cash.

Google
Their donuts are delicious, although the variety is pretty basic. Breakfast sandwiches are large and delicious. Coffee is great too (and better than surrounding coffee shops). Last but not least, the service is outstanding - I came by at 1pm the other day not realizing they closed at noon - they still let me in and made me a sandwich and donuts 🌟

Google
My go-to #1 donut place in the Bay Area. Friendly kind staff, prompt service and very well made and tasty products both breakfast items and donuts. Try the crumble cake donuts, raspberry filled donut and cinnamon cake donut holes.

Google
Alex the owner is dedicated to a great experience . His food is as all hand made on site by him in the dead of night , And by the time you show up it's as sitting in the window like some feast made for a king . His donuts are great .

Best donuts of my life, the chocolate dipped old fashioned donut is to die

Yelp
Was up super early and passing through the area and needed a pick me up. Dream Fluff's glowing open sign was like a beacon of hope. There's lots of street parking and prices for donuts and coffee are fair. Service was friendly and quick. I honestly wasn't expecting too much but the donuts were delicious. The glazed crueller might've been the best I've ever had - crispy, sweet, and spongey. All of the donuts tasted fresh and my partner loved the chocolate cake donut. Already thinking about coming back and trying more donuts - and maybe a breakfast sandwich too hehe
google avatar

Yelp
Classic style donut shop that gets the job done exactly how you'd like it! I love a good donut, they satisfy my taste buds for a sweet treat! Dream Fluff is a perfect spot right off of College Ave with quick service and friendly folks! Great variety of donuts that fit any craving, from blueberry cake to a classic buttermilk bar. Everything I have gotten to try here has been great! And no matter how many times I return to this shop, the quality has yet to falter. Their prices are fair for a great quality treat. Give it a visit!

Yelp
Listen, I'm no donut expert. Oh wait, I've got 64 donut shop reviews in my Yelp collection of donut purveyors, so by default, I guess I am. Believe me, that escalated level of carb consumption isn't a source of pride for me, but I can't turn my head from a good donut. Dream Fluff is part of my wayback machine because it's been around since the 1980's. So have I. Well, I was a fresh-faced Berkeley alumnus when I first came upon this shop. I probably bought my share of dozen donut boxes back then and not just for me. However, time passed, and I had not returned until quite recently. Not so fresh-faced but still with an appetite for a good donut. The display case looked identical to what I remembered. Consistency can be a good thing, not just the hobgoblin of small minds. I bought a $1.75 Blueberry Cake Donut and have not looked back (Photo 3). Dream Fluff would be my porn name. DONUT - 4 stars...one donut would've led to another AMBIANCE - 4 stars...still the same old-school spot SERVICE - 4 stars...friendly, busy serving a constant stream of drop-bys TOTAL - 4 stars...it's a survivor...it not gon' give up RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? Here's my collection of places I've tried and reviewed: https://bit.ly/2CbVh8u

Yelp
Gotta love their donuts! Dream Fluff Donuts always remind me of my childhood. People are friendly here.

Yelp
I picked up a bag of mixed donuts for only $3.99 on To Good To Go! The bag was filled up with 8 regular sized donuts (cruller, chocolate coated, sugar, and glazed. On top there were so many donut holes. They didn't all make it home. The donuts were still soft and fluffy, no staleness. Whenever I'm up at Ashby and College, I usually stop by for 1 or 2. I'm in heaven right now.
google avatar

Kelly L.

Yelp
Good donuts, I got the Boston cream donut and my sister got the maple glaze donut, both were good typical donuts, I'd say the Boston cream tasted a bit artificial, definitely not a homemade cream as it tasted like it could have came from a box mix but most donut shops probably do this also. Overall friendly service, good donuts at the standard price
google avatar

Vivian B.

Yelp
Delicious, classic donuts. Cute and authentic shop with very nice, efficient service and reasonable prices. My son, a donut connoisseur, loves it especially the raspberry filled.
google avatar

Lisa H.

Yelp
This is a great mom and pop donut shop! The donuts are heavy, sweet and delicious. They often have bags of donuts on the app "too good to go". For 3.99$, I received 7 assorted donuts and they were fantastic, what a steal! The donuts were still moist and tasty!
google avatar

Alicja G.

Yelp
Ordered a glazed regular donut, glazed donut twist, and a cream filled donut. The cream filled donut was light and definitely made that day. The cream filling was also good, similar to the Krispy Kreme filling but not as sweet (which I liked!). I did wish the filling was spread more evenly as the filling was filled from the top of the donut, and was mostly in the very center. The regular glazed donut was pretty standard, definitely a classic if that is what you are looking for.

Yelp
We're visiting Berkeley from out of town and decided to try Dream Fluff Donuts through 2Good2Go. I walked a mile to go pick up the bag and just got back and tasted a couple of things. I am blown away! So far I tried a glazed donut hole, which was fresh and delicious, with a thin layer of crisp sugar glaze, and half of a rectangle bar donut with chocolate icing. The icing was thick and chocolatey and in the perfect proportion to the dough :) My expectation had been that since I'm getting a deal, they should be giving me day-old donuts, but these taste like they were just made. I'm trying to forget I know there are donuts in the house now so I don't accidentally eat them all before I have some people tp share them with :) Other flavors in the bag are: Classic old fashioned, Double chocolate, Maple cruller, Old fashioned with chocolate glaze, and this amazing looking apple cinnamon crumb cake. I would DEFINITELY return here and do a regular order to try some of the cream-filled and custard filled ones!
google avatar

Ash H.

Yelp
The service was wonderful, good classic selection with a classic donut shop look. The reason I gave 4 stars was the maple was not very flavorful and that is my favorite donut! I brought a dozen to a meeting and they were a huge hit!
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
I was certain this place would be overhyped. But it's not! These donuts are great and the ladies who work there are so friendly and nice. I had an apple fritter, which had a great texture. Crunchy on the outside, soft in the middle. It would have been nice to have a little more apple inside it but it tasted great. Also had a blueberry cake donut. Tons of blueberry on the inside, very moist and soft. It's a tiny shop with a few small tables but great for takeout. Really looking forward to going back soon to try some of the breakfast options.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good, classic glazed donuts. I tried a glazed raised and a twist, and both were top notch.
google avatar

Yarrow H.

Yelp
I have been going to Dream Fluff Donuts for over 20 years. They are a local institution. If you're looking for classic donuts that are super fluffy and fresh look no further. There is often a line but it goes quick and also speaks to their popularity. The ambiance is old school. They haven't updated much since they opened but it's clean and quaint. Diner vibes. My favorite are their old fashioned donuts and their raised donuts (their fluffiest). They also are super reasonably priced.
google avatar

Jayla B.

Yelp
DELICIOUS glazed donuts. Always So moist and fresh. You can easily eat two of them. Croissant Breakfast sandwiches also top rate!. You won't be sorry.
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
Very basic donuts that seem like they are made with cheap ingredients. Like if you get a donut at a gas station. High prices and a fee for using a credit card makes the cost more than $4 for a single donut. I have been here more than once since I thought something was wrong the first time given the positive reviews but it was bad both times.

Jessica T.

Yelp
Been coming here for years and love the donut variety. My favorite has always been the cake donuts but since the younger crew took over the last year, the cake donuts have gotten small and not as fluffy as they used to be. No longer worth the $2 a piece. Still go for an occasional cinnamon swirl though!
google avatar

Susan C.

Yelp
Great local spot. I've driven and walked by it many times over the years. I finally went inside and bought an apple fritter. I wanted to love it but it was just okay. It was too crispy as if it was left in the fryer a few minutes too long. And it had way too much glaze. Maybe I got a bad one? I'll give it another try another time but am not in a hurry to stop in.
google avatar

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place thanks to my adventures with Too Good to Go. It's nestled in the Berkeley area so parking can be tough. It's a cute mom and pop shop that sells classy donuts. My surprise bag was definitely filled with fluffyness. Their donuts haven't suffered from shrinkflation and satisfies my sweet tooth. They have all sorts of goodies to choose from. I'll be back here for my donut cravings. Glad they open till 4pm.

Candy C.

Yelp
Delish...,,Variety unique jelly filled like old fashion style nice staff parking a challenge

Yelp
TL:DR - Really good plain donut. Didn't stand out in anyway, but good quality for what it was. My biggest gripe is the lack of labels for the ginormous case/window full of different donuts. Definitely a neighborhood-y feel. Solid otherwise. -------------------------------------------------------------- Super solid but average donut. Nothing special. Do wish it had signs on their donuts. Really lef Thursday what was what. Stopped by for the first time on a 4am early airport run and it definitely has a neighborhood vibe to it. While they do have a menu board, you'll have to look around at all the different homemade paper signs around the register and doors to get the full idea of what they have. And while they did have a gazillion donuts out in the case and out the front window, there were literally no signs as to what the donuts were. Being new and not having a regular order this was a bit daunting. We ended up just ordering obvious donuts like the glazed, cinnamon roll, and just asked for a few cake donuts (which apparently come in white or dark) as to not hold up the 4 person deep line behind us. We also ordered a breakfast burrito to go which the single man crew promptly left us to good make in its entirety before charging us or taking the next order. All in all, everything was a really good regular donut. It didn't melt in your mouth or taste like anything special compared to other donut places, they just did a regular donut well. Maybe I got the wrong thing, but I wouldn't say that was on me given the lack of labels. All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to come back at all if I was in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way either. And if I could I'd come with someone who knew what they were ordering.
google avatar

Crysti L.

Yelp
The owners and workers here are awesome and the food and pastries are great. The shop is clean and cozy as well. Plus I won't miss an opportunity to support Cambodian owned businesses
google avatar

Magda M.

Yelp
This place is a neighborhood staple. I love coming here on a Sunday morning to get a croissant breakfast sanwhich with egg, cheese and bacon. Nommmmm. Absolutely delicious (and especially true after a night of a few too many cocktails, haha). I'll typically add on a donut or two to my order. Raised glazed or a crueler - can't go wrong. The staff here is nice and move at a good pace, especially on busy weekends. Very little room to move / sit inside, so I recommend taking things to go!
google avatar

JoAnn S.

Yelp
I was walking by and noticed Dream Fluff Donuts. I am not crazy about donuts, but I am always looking for a place that carries a good chocolate covered old fashion. So, I went in and they had what I was looking for, and it was after lunch - a lot of places don't have chocolate covered old fashions in the afternoon. It was great! Besides chocolate covered old fashions, there is a large variety of glazed donuts, frosted donuts, and donut holes. I hear their apple fritters are popular. If you're thirsty, they have a refrigerated case with water, fruit juices (including apple juice), vitamin water, bottled Frappuccino, and more. They also have containers of coffee ready to consume. They also make breakfast sandwiches. Wheel chair accessible entrance.
google avatar

Jessyca E.

Yelp
Alex and family are the nicest people. True family Owned business that give back to community and helps people. The donuts are always fresh and delicious, not overly oily. They have many, many breakfast sandwiches and are delicious. The danishes and other pastries are huge and yummy. You cannot go wrong with anything you order there!
google avatar

Alice C.

Yelp
I ordered a TGTG bag for $3.99 on 7/30/22 and got an assortment of about a dozen donuts. I picked them up around 4:30 pm, just before closing, and it was quick and easy since the bags were already pre-filled (you don't get to choose your flavors). I don't remember much about individual flavors but the donuts were all fresh and decent quality. They're not super fluffy (which is usually how I prefer donuts) but they're also not too dense. I also appreciate that they're not overly greasy. All around just a decent donut. I also liked the variety in flavors (my bag had blueberry, original glazed, chocolate, fruit loops, just to name a few). I think they hit the spot and are a very reasonable price. They're definitely not like the fancy gourmet donuts you'd find at some shops for $5 a piece, but they're reliable and better than mass chain shops like Dunkin'.
google avatar

Natalie L.

Yelp
I ordered a surprise bag from here on Too Good to Go, so I got an assortment that I couldn't choose. They gave a TON of donuts for a good price and even threw in a ginormous cinnamon roll. Definitely recommend the blueberry donut--you can see blueberries speckled inside!
google avatar

Alisa K.

Yelp
WHEN: 10/23/21 saturday @ 4pm These donuts are amazing! They weren't crazy expensive and fancy like some other newer donut shops. They have the usual classics, the fancies, and some newer variety type donuts. The donuts are 100% fluffy! They're fried perfectly with just the right amount of glaze and what I loved was that they weren't overly sweet and doughy. The insides are soft and moist but not airy like Krispy Kreme. My favorites were the French crueler, the cinnamon crumble donut, and the apple strudel donut. Would definitely come again to support this small, family owned and operated business!
google avatar

R D.

Yelp
On occasion I'm called upon to bring donuts to a volunteer garden work party. Volunteers are mostly high school students. I'll pickup 2 dozen and within an hour of delivery to the garden they've been vaporized. I take that as an excellent sign. Usually order a dozen raised (3 each: glazed, chocolate, sugar) & a dozen cake (3 each: chocolate w sprinkles duh, plus crumb and coconut). Order day ahead so easy pickup morning of event. Super nice and helpful counter folks. Thanks guys!!

Marcus S.

Yelp
Solid classic donuts. We really enjoyed the old fashioned glazed. Good service and kind people. Check it out if you are around.
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
They really do live up to their name! The glazed raised donuts and donut holes are my go-to and they are really a lovely fluffy bite. I decided to stop by on a Friday during one of my longer walks around the neighborhood. As I walked there, I was trying to justify my future purchase of yummy glazed goodness for my burned calories. There is a variety of old school donuts on display upon entry and sometimes at the store window. The Asian ladies who work there are very sweet and efficient. FYI there is a charge of 0.75 if your purchase is under $5, which isn't a problem for me as I tend to overindulge whenever I come here. Recommend this donut spot if you are dreaming of a classic delicious fluffy glazed donut. I always leave with a bagful!
google avatar

Annabelle H.

Yelp
Picked up some donuts here last week and wow I think we just found our new go-to donut place! I don't think I've ever had a donut as fluffy as the ones here! No wonder they're called "Dream Fluff Donuts". Seriously every single donut we bit into tasted like fluffy heaven! Our favorites had to be donut holes, the chocolate glazed, the original glazed (of course), the cinnamon roll (SO good) - actually EVERYTHING WAS SO GOOD! While I don't care too much for old fashioned in general, my boyfriend loves the old fashioned here as well! Waiting for another cheat day to come back here and get more! I like to tell myself it's healthier because it's so fluffy; my boyfriend who bakes tells me otherwise but I'm going to continue dreaming. Anyway, YOU GOTTA TRY THESE FLUFFY DONUTS!!!
google avatar

Bernie Z.

Yelp
Convenient from Medical center- I dropped in and had a delicious apple crumble slice and hot chocolate.
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
Please support this great donut shop!! I came by during close and got a too good to go bag with a variety of donuts that were SO FRESH and fluffy. There was so much value, the bear clae filled with apple was so good, as was everything I got.
google avatar

Audrey M.

Yelp
I love donuts! This place not only has the variety of flavors but the customer service is excellent. Very friendly couple helped me with my order. I got the maple bacon donuts, twists, and donut holes. I found out about them through the Too Good To Go app. I'm so happy I did cuz now I have a new favorite spot. Very happy tummy!

Nadeem M.

Yelp
Great Donuts, Great Staff Located in the suburbs of Elmwood in Berkeley, this charming donut shop lives up to its name. Walking in, you're hit with the smell of fresh donuts. The shop is family owned and it really shows - It's cozy, inviting, and a nice retreat from the bustle of the city. It was a little busy when I came in (around 11:30 on a Sunday) but the service was quick and the staff were approachable and friendly. I came in to buy some donuts for me and my roommates; I got a bear claw, maple old-fashioned, some original glazed, and a crunch donut and they all had a wonderful, pillowy texture and weren't too sweet - we all thoroughly enjoyed them and we'll definitely be coming back. If you like sweets or craving donuts and you're in Berkeley, this place is hard to beat.
google avatar

Al L.

Yelp
Having driven by many times, I was recently in the area and stopped by to get some donuts. It's street parking here and I parked a block away. The shop is a traditional neighborhood donut shop that also serves hot breakfast sandwiches, pancakes and eggs dishes, cold and hot drinks, snacks and lottery tickets. There are some tables inside and out front to enjoy your food. But it was donuts I was here for and the displays were in the front of the store. They have are the traditional old fashions, cake, French and raised and the fancies like bars, jellies and fritters and pastries. I got a dozen old fashions, glazed and cake donuts, a maple bar and a cinnamon roll. The donuts were all delicious and I liked how light and fluffy were the glazed donuts. If I'm in the area and craving donuts, I'll be stopping by Dream Fluff.
google avatar

Anand P.

Yelp
This is one of the best donut shops in Oakland/Berkeley. They have fresh baked donuts on a daily basis. I love the Boston creme, vanilla frosted with sprinkles, and old fashion with chocolate frosting. They hand out free donuts starting at 9am on the second Saturday of each month. Be sure to get your free donut, and don't be shy to buy some amazing donuts as well!
google avatar

Yelp
THESE ONE STAR REVIEWS are a joke...anyway, dream fluff is just as it sounds and they've been here forever. Great donuts good breakfast stuff and the place always has people there...normal people I might add. Yes, the occasional nut job may wander in, just like the occasional kinda stale pastry, a worker having a bad day, etc..No place is perfect but you can expect ass kicking donuts.

Margie T.

Yelp
I Cannot wait to come back for more dream fluffs donut. This is my second time i got donuts here.

Kainoa L.

Yelp
This shop is a gem. I visit here every time I'm in town. The breakfast sandwiches are excellent and the donuts are always fresh and tasty.
google avatar

Alyc H.

Yelp
These are definitely next levels donuts. I got an old fashioned, maple bacon, and maple custard bar. Definitely a couple steps up in quality compared to any ole donut shop.

Ke ..

Yelp
What a neighborhood staple! Best doughnuts I've had in a long time. Their glazed doughnut in particular is my favorite. The staff is quick and efficient, and the place is very down to earth and charming. Will definitely be back frequently!
google avatar

Craig Y.

Yelp
Another solid donut shop in the East Bay. If you are headed down Ashby, it's a great place for classic donuts. They have a few fancy ones here but are known primarily for being a solid donut shop with all your favorites. The apple fritter in particular is great but I loved their cruellers too. FOOD: Like I said if you're looking for fancy donuts you should go elsewhere but if you just love classic donuts this place is solid! Everything is good and the donuts don't have that greasy feel some places have. Instead these are flavorful and light. SERVICE: Good, nice no-nonsense business. They help you quickly and move the line along. I appreciate that since there is almost always a line. Nice people too but not a lot of small talk and that's okay! COST: Great prices for the East Bay! Classic prices for classic donuts.
google avatar

Sebastian R.

Yelp
Great little hole in the wall in the Elmwood neighborhood that is loved by locals. I come here about once a month on the weekends and I am always satisfied with the vibes and surrounding atmosphere of the neighborhood. Their donuts and other food items are well priced, and is accessible to anyone, even during the pandemic. Always love coming here, as it's my personal favorite donut shop in Berkeley.
google avatar

Katherine G.

Yelp
I found about this spot through the app TooGoodtoGo, which essentially lets you purchase the leftover food that would have been otherwise wasted at a discounted price. Upon arrival, there were still plenty of options available in the case. I showed my order to the man working and he quickly got me my bag. There were so many donuts inside! I love trying new things, so I was super glad that I was able to sample a whole variety of their donuts. My favorite was the iced with chocolate sprinkles, though the cake donut and apple fritter were amazing as well. Super worth it, and super fluffy donuts! I'll be back for sure.
google avatar

Yeon-jae J.

Yelp
I had an apple fritter, chocolate glazed old fashioned, ham and eggs on a sesame bagel. All were amazing.

Andre J.

Yelp
Donuts were delicious and the price was great! Services person was friendly and helpful!

David L.

Yelp
Come on - best donuts in California. Breakfast sandwiches (croissant) - get over medium with sausage. Coffee's alright, but it's a donut shop. My #1 breakfast in Berkeley.
