Two Oakland Ice Cream Companies Fight Over Who Invented Rocky Road - Eater SF

"One thing’s for certain, though, according to the latest episode of the KQED podcast Bay Curious: Rocky Road was definitely invented in Oakland. As the podcast details, the two companies who have the most plausible claims are Dreyer’s, the Nestle-owned mega-corporation, and Fentons Creamery, whose old-fashioned ice cream parlor has long been a Piedmont Avenue staple." - Luke Tsai

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (Would’ve been 5, but… keep reading 😉) So I bought a box of the classic Drumstick vanilla cones — you know, the iconic ones with the peanuts on top, the crunchy chocolate shell, the joy of childhood in frozen form. But imagine my surprise (and confusion) when I pulled one out and… no nuts. Not even one lonely peanut. Just a smooth chocolate dome looking like it hit witness protection. At first, I thought it was a fluke. My boyfriend laughed and said, “What if this is like some secret Willy Wonka-style contest and you just won?” Naturally, I checked the box for golden tickets or mysterious instructions. Nada. So here I am — nutless and curious. 🤨 Nestlé/Dreyer’s, if this was a manufacturing glitch… hey, I get it, things happen. But if this is part of some super-secret sweepstakes, please let me know what I won. At minimum, I’d like to redeem a fully nut-clad cone. 😅 Still delicious… just missing that signature crunch. Hoping someone from Drumstick HQ sees this and brings the nuts back. Preferably with a side of prize-winning glory. #NutlessMystery #DidIWinOrNah #NestléPlotTwist 8/7/25🍦UPDATE: The Nut-less Mystery Deepens 🕵️‍♀️🥜 So remember that time I bought a box of Drumstick Classic Vanilla and got one without nuts? I chalked it up to a fluke — a one-time, no-nut wonder. I even made a TikTok about it (because hey, laughter is better than melted dreams). 😅 But now… it’s happened again. Same box. Two out of four cones… completely bald. No nuts. No crunch. No warning. Just a smooth, slightly suspicious ice cream cap staring back at me. At this point, I don’t know if I’m being punk’d, selected for a secret snack society, or slowly unraveling a creamy conspiracy. Either way, it feels like I’m collecting rare Drumsticks — just not the kind I asked for. 🎟️🍦 @Drumstick team, I love y’all. Truly. This isn’t a rage review — it’s a gentle, nut-loving cry for help. 😩 Feel free to reach out and make it right. I’ll be here… waiting… watching… holding my spoon like Charlie Bucket waiting for his golden chocolate bar.

The home of Rocky Road ice cream!! Go to Dreyer's for a tried and true ice cream parlor experience. With a friendly staff and wide selection of ice cream flavors, including three invented by Dreyer's, you can't go wrong on a hot day or when you just have that ice cream craving. This is the perfect spot for our Rockridge Neighborhood Heritage and Rockridge Ice Cream & Gelato food tours!

The best quality ice cream served with a smile. This place is one of Rockridge's neighborhood establishments and the original Dreyers / Edy's location. Come enjoy a scoop or three of refreshing ice cream!

This appears to be a flagship store for the Oakland-born ice cream chain now owned by Nestle. Oftentimes, there are experimental flavors. The time I went, there was only one: Butterfinger. Overall, the ice cream was the same as you would find anywhere else in the country and the service was fine. I was really hoping for something special at this location and it didn't have it.
