Driftwood

"Set within a charming hotel, with lovely grounds stretching down to a private beach, is this bright, New England style restaurant. The bountiful local larder is used to great effect, and the refined, elegant dishes and friendly service are pitched perfectly for the hotel’s smart yet laid-back style." - Michelin Inspector

This is a lovely B & B. Wonderful full english breakfasts- the best we have ever eaten.|Only two days were Continental buffet- not nearly as good. We stayed in a terrific room (No.10) with a huge bed and three windows, all with a sea view.|Though the lighting in the room could be improved, as there was no light on the dressing table. Very good ensuite bathroom with great power shower.|The path down to the beach was steep but well graded and took just three minutes.|The beach was really clean, sandy and deserted. Only a couple of other people on it.|The only downside was that we were a bit dissapointed that there was no-one to greet us upon arrioval and that we had to use a code to gain entrance.|But the staff, when they were there, were really great - kind and helpful.|The nearby Rosevine Hotel did an excellent chowder. And we had a delicious meal at the Tresanton Hotel in St Mawes- yes- "fine dining" but expensive.. Other good eateries were in Portscatho, a 10 minute drive away- "Tide and Thyme" for an excellent pizza, "The Plume of feathers" pub, "The Boathouse". The Cornish Italian, was a bit further, about 15 mins drive away in the Ruan HighLanes area.|It only took 15 minutes to the King Harry Ferry (Floating chain bridge), which gave access to Trelissick Gardens and Truro. A good regular car ferry service every 20 minutes. Nearby St Just in Roseland is a must. Such a magical, quiet place, Church and gardens by the estuary and a recently opened exhibition centre which is brilliant.|We highly reccomend the Driftwood for its comfort, breakfasts and secluded, yet very accessible location.

Most of these reviews seem to relate to the now closed restaurant. Situated in a beautiful location and that is seemingly what justifies the price tag. Rooms had a fan, which was much appreciated, and a fridge and ours had a bath (but no working shower head). For the price tag, 15ml of shower gel (for 2 people) with a shower that doesn't work really doesn't cut it. Not a place to stay in the middle of your travels. You get to play breakfast roulette, with no way of pre-determining which so if it is important to you to know, it might be worth a preemptive email. Decent coffee machine, with a syrup a nice extra. The beach is lovely but not truly private. Bedding and mess on the landing the entire time. Saw people at the check out for the first time; I'm sure they would have fixed the shower head if we had been there for more than one night.

Absolutely beautiful setting, with lovely garden and path leading down to a beach. But the B&B itself was not as good as I had expected given the 4.7 rating and now, having read some of the more recent reviews, it appears that Driftwood is still benefitting from the reviews given while it was a more impressive hotel pre-July 2024. For the price I would have expected more, for example a decent breakfast and sufficient toiletries in the room. And the lack of staff is a real issue, mostly unstaffed while we were there. Disappointing, as could be absolutely stunning with the right team, a proper restaurant and service.

Setting was stunning and can tell, at one point, this was a beautiful stay. Sadly, the cost of rooms, does not equal the experience. Although staff were lovely when there (serving breakfast between 8-10) you are on your own, at all other times. No bar, snacks (not even a biscuit with your tea/coffee making facilities in room).||Breakfast was ok- why they have got a 3, rather than 2. Overall, this stay was poor. (Stay with lovely friend, helped to find the humour in it).||Low or no lighting throughout discourages any use of what once must have been beautiful communal lounge, sitting areas. No lighting in hallway to our room, up narrow staircase, so torches on phone needed. Careful walking through breakfast area, different levels in dark lighting (which you have to go through to access some rooms). I missed a step on a change of level, on arrival. For someone with less mobility, this could be dangerous.||Absolutely no way to get to local town, safely in evening, without your own car. Local taxi service (on cards) were not driving in area after 9 (during our stay), so would have been a very long walk back in dark. ||Room facilities poor, one accessible plug socket, which was already overloaded with 4 appliances and all others inaccessible, unless you were willing to move furniture. So make sure you charge your phone elsewhere. Beds too soft, rugs in room trip hazard and frayed carpets in rooms. Shame as furniture and upholstery did look the part. ||Some of these points would have been manageable, easily put right, if staff were present, but there is no-one to help, or to report matters to. ||Water pressure was awful - trickle at best, every time you lifted the hand held shower (no fitting or option to stand and shower) you lost all hot water. ||Garden was beautifully mature, but not maintained. The walk down to beach was not safe. Do not attempt if you are not agile. Where handrails were in place, these were not secure and rotting. ||Such as shame as could tell at one point, this was a beautiful stay. There will be much better stays in this gorgeous Cornwall spot, alas just not here. Especially for the cost of the room we stayed in.||Hate to write such a negative review, but all above are fair and honest account of our stay here. We stayed one night only, I would have been really disappointed if we had booked two. If this had been a cheaper stay, all above could be forgiven, but this is not advertised as such- you do not get what you have paid for here.

We kicked off our tour of Cornwall at the Driftwood and would happily have stayed longer. The private beach and rooms with a view make any walk well worth it. Breakfast was amazing and we switched each day and was always happy and full. We did switch rooms for a better shower and the owner could not have been more helpful.

An absolutely stunning hotel with breathtaking sea views, a cozy and relaxing atmosphere, and top-notch service. The lush garden, elegant interior, and attention to every detail make it a perfect place to unwind. Everything is truly exceptional😍

Arrived tonight. Front door open NOONE there to welcome you or know what room you are staying in. Front door left unlocked. If female on own it would be a most unsafe place to stay. No where to get food if you have no car. Very few taxis. This is most unsatisfactory place. Have left 3 messages on voice mail and it said they would ring you back - they haven’t !!!’ Not a cheap place to stay and never experienced anything like this - totally unacceptable. Ruined the weekend / wedding I’m attending. Never again !!

Looking at a variety of websites we had high expectations of what was to come. You cannot fault the location, the views of the bay or the staff. In fact, we only met two, one on arrival and one who served breakfast. and both were professional, chatty and welcoming.|This is not a hotel but more of a bed and breakfast. Described as boutique rooms is probably a bit strong. The decor was pleasant enough but rucked carpets, bins with contents still in and 1/4 of a loo roll and no spare (not that extra was needed) was a miss, along with a bed base sheet that did not fit properly. |The grounds clearly have been cared for over years gone by, but now were neglected with weeds in paths and the car park. The walk down to the private beach was more like a David Attenborough adventure due to neglect. Quite a few trip hazards under the foliage. Once down on the beach, time stood still which was lovely.|For those with an appetite you will need to fill up on the toast and cereals as the cooked brekkie, whilst delicious, would have fitted on a side plate.|It is a shame to write a review like this but for the money spent it was expensive and did not offer value for money or live up to the expectations made on its own or the other web sites where it was promoted.
