I'd been coming to DSD since 2017,back when their tasting room was essentially the lobby to the distillery and was akin to visiting the lobby of Joes Machine Shop.
They've come light years since that time, and it finally penetrated by thick cranium that the new DSD merited a thorough review.
The new venue, constructed 4 years ago or so, is impressive. Modern without being cold, well-landscaped and welcoming. Tastefully done, with a welcoming tasting/dining room and an adjacent hall for larger gatherings (or overflow for busy regular days). There is plenty of outside dining space, with a decent area covered with fans and a large and pleasant lawn space. There are decent play structures, and DSD is extremely family and dog friendly.
The staff has always been cordial and welcoming. The bar in the tasting room is wide and usually staffed appropriately to the level of business. Their drink menu features their own distillations (duh), but they are well designed on the craft side and solid on the traditional side. Their small batch approach results in credible vodkas and gins, pretty much down the middle of the road ( though they do offered flavored vodkas). Their regular vodkas and gins are conventional but of quality. Solid. Confession: their Artisanal Gin is my go-to for gin cocktails, and I'm never without it.
Since you order from the bar or a QR code, I can't say much about waitstaff, but I will say they are prompt and personable.
The menu is not large and only slightly bar-food-ish. Sliders and tacos and such as that but always well executed. We dined with them, usually at lunch, a number of times over the years since the new venue opened and always been satisfied.
We came this time at 11 or so on a Sunday morning for the brunch menu. We decided to share one order of the biscuits and gravy and another of the pork carnitas street tacos with egg. The biscuits and gravy were splendid. Nothing too out of the ordinary but just extremely flavorful and well done. My companion pronounced them the best she'd ever had (she's since recanted on that but I heard what I heard). The biscuits must have been home made and were each the size of Rhode Island. The gravy was surprisingly thick and had a hint of sausage to it ( though I'd welcome more evidence of that). The pork in the carnitas was spot on and very flavorful without being tough. The pickled cabbage was a sweetish contrast to the very savory meat. The only downers were the tortillas themselves. But nobody in the entire history of Western civilization has ever produced a decent mini tortilla. They're always tough or stick to each other and taste like corn-based cardboard. So I won't fault DSD too much on that.
For drinks, we first hit the Bloody Mary bar, which is a smart addition by DSD. We followed with a Salty Tom (me) and a sweet cocktail that my date described as delicious ( I'm not going there as I'm no fan or sweet cocktails) . The Salty Tom, as with all their cocktails, is a clever variation and well thought out.
Ok, DSD. I hope this makes up for my years of neglect. Thanks for a great Sunday brunch.
