The Highest Places in America

"The elevation-gifted Driskill Mountain sits in the forests in the northern part of the state, and is named after one of the first settlers in the area. Hailing from Georgia, James Christopher Driskill and his family of nine children came to the area in 1859. Observant travelers will notice the Driskill name on many mailboxes on the roads in the area, and on some of the headstones of the cemetery of the Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church, the traditional starting point for the hike. Logging is frequent in the forest, and the roads may change depending on the activity, but signs are posted for hikers to follow to reach the summit cairn and new kiosk one mile from the church." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Adventures Are Out There

This was a fun hike to our 7th state high point. Very well maintained for being private property. Plenty of signs so you know your in the right place, we also did 2 geocaches on this trail which are always fun. My watch said 1.66 miles total, took us about 1 hour. But that's with stopping and enjoying view points, signing the register at the end and doing 2 geocaches. There were a lot of nats out this day October 25, 2024.

This was a pretty simple trail but you can make it harder and more interesting by taking the False Mountain trail. There's also an additional trail to another overlook from the end of this trail. It's one of the closer trails to my house and I'll be back at some point. The tail is a little short and I did it twice just to get enough exercise time in. At that point I didn't know about the additional trail. Not a hiker's dream but good for an evening walk. The trailhead starts at a little church and you actually park in its parking lot. The trail is on private land but well marked & traveled. There is no fee.

Short hike to the Louisiana high point! Trail is well maintained. Park at the church. Marker is visible along the road.

Well maintained trail with slight elevation and scenic views. I walked up this trail in the late winter. Most of the foliage was gone but because of that I was able to see quite a distance from the “peak”. I will definitely come back in the spring to see all the green and again in the fall to see the colors change. This is a very family and ability friendly dirt and gravel trail.

I stopped off to see the highest point in Louisiana, Driskill Mountain. To get there, you park near a local church and then access a chained off dirt road next to the cemetery. The hike is only a couple of miles and not very steep. However, as you might imagine in a state known for its bayous, the hike was quite humid and there were a number of insects. The view from the summit is not awe-inspiring, but it is pleasant, sweeping over quite a bit of territory. This is about 20 miles off the beaten path which enables the visitor to see more of the wooded non-swampy parts of LA. Lots of agriculture, cross roads, small towns, churches make it interesting to try to imagine what state you are in. The short hike in the woods was pleasant to the state's high point, and somewhat exciting to wear the hi-vis orange hunting vests that were available at the trail head, because in the South it seems most days are hunting season for some type of fowl or critter.

The trail is clean and wide. It was a little bit muddy at the very start, but we expected that given the last 3 days of rain. Our family enjoyed this easy hike a great deal!

Loved that this family opened up the trail to the public and had informative signs throughout. We followed the main trail as it was perfectly marked out with signs. Worth a stop to stretch the legs!

Nice easy hike with a pleasant view. It's cool to be at the highest point in Louisiana.
