I stopped off to see the highest point in Louisiana, Driskill Mountain. To get there, you park near a local church and then access a chained off dirt road next to the cemetery. The hike is only a couple of miles and not very steep. However, as you might imagine in a state known for its bayous, the hike was quite humid and there were a number of insects. The view from the summit is not awe-inspiring, but it is pleasant, sweeping over quite a bit of territory.
This is about 20 miles off the beaten path which enables the visitor to see more of the wooded non-swampy parts of LA. Lots of agriculture, cross roads, small towns, churches make it interesting to try to imagine what state you are in. The short hike in the woods was pleasant to the state's high point, and somewhat exciting to wear the hi-vis orange hunting vests that were available at the trail head, because in the South it seems most days are hunting season for some type of fowl or critter.
