Best Restaurants for Lunch in Greenville, South Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Just behind Stone Avenue is a convenience store that the North Main neighborhood fervently supports. The Drop-In Store offers one of everything, but during the week at lunchtime, chef Maria Gomes prepares Goan dishes, including curry and feijoada, as well as burgers, butter chicken wraps, and chicken chili enchiladas. There are two types of tacos too, including a shrimp variety made with South Carolina shrimp. Half the neighborhood will be there, and that’s half the fun. There are at least seven tables if you want to bring a laptop and work too." - Stephanie Burnette

I grew up on Townes Street, North Main and I lived in Greenville for twenty seven years. My brother Brian and I would visit the Drop In Store on a regular basis and today I visited there and shared with the woman who was working there about my Cancer diagnosis and that I had been working in a National Park for nineteen years. I decided to move from Arizona back to Greenville recently because I have two brain tumors/cancer unfortunately and I wanted to continue my Cancer treatment at the Saint Francis Hospital. Also my Brother was killed in June 2021 and he is buried at the Anderson Veterans Memorial cemetery unfortunately. She told me that she remembered me from my childhood and it was a privilege to talk with her again. I appreciated her kindness and I will be returning again. -Ben Stevens

Google
Great store with a complete selection of choice wines and beer. All manner of convenience items, ice cream, lottery tickets and tobacco products. Fast, friendly service. Liquor store in the back. Cafe serves delicious, hot, made to order lunch by Maria. Menu changes daily. My favorite downtown classic store.

Google
Best little market on the north end. Have a plethora of random things you need. Products are selected well, with brand names and quality products for North Mainers. Great wine selection. Had a liquor store connected to it. And a lunch spot with a kitchen that usually has 5 items that are delicious. I frequent weekly. Highly recommend.

Google
The Drop-In Store quickly became my favorite neighborhood stop! They not only have a great selection of beer and wine, but the food is amaaaaazing and reasonably priced. It's truly one of the best values in gville. You can buy food, snacks, and drinks anywhere, but what really sets The Drop-In apart is the family that owns the business. They care about their customers, their community and their business. It always brightens my day to visit and enjoy their company. Next time you're around North Main, be sure to Drop-In and check it out for yourself! Cheers!!

Google
Great food for a quick bite with an extended wine selection.. also connected to a liquor store with good prices to go along. Highly recommended!

Google
They’re awesome! Love the drop in. They’ve got everything you need. From lottery tickets to orange bitters to firewood. Great people. Also a really large beer and wine selection!

Markus Stange

Google
Amazing Wine and Beer selection. Customer service is top notch and don’t forget to check out Maria’s kitchen for lunch.

Google
Always my go-to spot if I need some beer or quick food. Fast, the best selections, and they take care of their people. I'll be back Tony!

Yelp
Although the food was okay not as i expected and not enough to fill me up. Felt like an intruder into the store eating in the isle

Yelp
Loved the chocolate cake! I've had to taste their main menu. I just need to align my schedule to their hours. Don't give this place a miss simply because it's a 'hole-in-the-wall'. Sometimes the best foods come from such places.

Yelp
I gotta start off with saying how I love find little treasures or hole in the wall, off the beaten path, etc. This spot when you walk in, looks like a gas station convenience store. In the bAck, as per the usual for the most tastiest Latin food, you will find a few a few tables, chairs and a cash register. I believe the menu probably changes somewhat Day to day, but I noticed a lot of regulars stopped through for lunch. They have beer and wine also that can compliment your food. The menu on the day I came in varies from chili dogs, Brazilian soup to Cuban sandwiches and tamales. On my visit, I got the Brazilian soup which came over rice and a tamal which was delicious! I ordered a beer, rusty bull which was bomb as well. Maria, who is in the back, appears to be the only cook, but the food didn't take long to come out. Parking, a little interesting. I wouldn't park in front because it might be hard to get out since they are right off the road, and the rest are on the side. Price: cheap. Great prices for a lunch! Def make a trip in here! Will be coming back.

Yelp
Nom nom. The food here is wonderfully fresh and tasty, and Maria is a delight. I ordered the slow cooked brisket sandwich for my hub, and it came on a torts bun (like ciabatta bread) with chips drizzled with a yummy sauce. I tried the spicy shrimp tacos, and the shrimp was so fresh and plump and had a nice but not too spicy kick. Have been here in the past and tried the feijoada and samosas, and she also makes empanadas. I recommend that when you don't know what you're hungry for, just stop in here and check the menu. I'm sure you'll find something you'll love, along with the friendliest service.

Yelp
I am stupid. I am in Maria's store several times a month and we have become friends, how did I not eat here ?!?!! Oh my lawd this woman can cook !!! But let me back up . It's a store . Yup a store that sells craft beers and wine and cornflakes. That's how big the range is , they got a lil of everything. What they don't have is a ton of seating or a fancy servers . They have something much more AMAZING and that's Maria in the kitchen. She cooks everything fresh and if it's not on the menu she will make it , just ask . In the time I was here I met a lawyer and a banker and a couple who just moved here and some Furman students, it's something for everyone. You can get carry out as well . I had a delicious fresh spicy shrimp tacos. It had a fresh Spring mix , hot sauce, shrimp and sour cream. It was absolutely the best taco ever ! I will definitely be returning soon to try the Cuban or the Alfredo or the Burger or ........ Just go !

Yelp
Don't judge a book by it's cover. The food here is DELICIOUS! I've tried the Cuban, empanadas, and the Shrimp Tacos (on separate visits of course) - all were incredibly fresh and delicious. Maria is so friendly and throws down in the kitchen!! Great, personable customer service makes each visit amazing. I think the menu changes sometimes but I'm sure whatever you order will be tasty! I plan on trying the Goan burger next!

Yelp
It's one of the best secret spots in Greenville. The food is fresh and prepared with love by Maria, one the nicest people you'll meet. It's like going over to a friend's house and having them cook the best of their dishes for you. You can tell there is care in the matter in which the food is prepared. If you are reading this, hurry and go.

Dawn S.

Yelp
In the back of the family-owned neighborhood store. Maria is AMAZING! Hands down the best shrimp tacos we've ever had. Carnitas tacos fantastic too! I also had to try the pumpkin spice cheesecake blondie that was very good as well. Definitely worth a drop in.

Yelp
We went for late lunch after the rush. Maria came out to greet me and my parents. Mom had the Cuban sandwich, dad had the chicken enchilada, and I had the Goan veggie club sandwich with the veggie soup. The Cuban had lean cuts of meat. It was very good. The chicken enchilada was better than expected. It had a bit of spice, but it is not overpowering. The Goan veggie sandwich and soup were delicious. It has a refreshing flavor and filled with cucumber, potato, a few onions.

Clay R.

Yelp
Marie makes awesome food! Brazilian feijoada (black beans and sausage over rice), spicy shrimp tacos, Cuban sandwich, chicken enchiladas, curry - it's all great. Don't be put off by the outward appearance of the store, the food is too good to miss. Get there at 11:00 AM and beat the "crowd" (it's too small to hold a crowd - lol)

Yelp
Sweet mamma jamma. This place is amazing. I went in around 3:45 pm so it was quiet and my food was ready quickly. The food area is pretty nondescript but everything appeared to be clean. Maria met me at the counter and explained the menu. I called my wife and we settled on the beef nachos and the spicy shrimp tacos and we were so impressed with both. My wife, who considers herself to be somewhat of an officiaNACHO, says these are the best nachos she has had since we moved to Greenville in August. Maria informed me that everything was handmade and the shrimp were brought in from Charleston and never frozen. We will be back for sure....maybe tomorrow!!

Yelp
Everything you've heard is true. Don't sleep on Maria Gomes' neighborhood bodega! Got the Cuban and some of her Spicy Shrimp Tacos. Both were perfect in about every way. I'll be back. A lot.
google avatar

Yelp
Ive only ever bought beer here, but I like that they allow you to drink here either from the draft taps or straight from the cooler. The food smells good, I hope to try soon. Convenience store, but way better.
google avatar

Vikas J.

Yelp
First time eating from here. Didn't really know what to expect but I really enjoyed the food. Ordered a veggie burger and pau bhaji. Will definitely be coming back to try the rest of the menu!
google avatar

Tricia S.

Yelp
This place is within walking distance and just so very convenient. The owners are extremely kind and they always have the essentials, milk; beer and snacks! Drop-In is the ideal "corner store" plus it feels good to support a local business verses going to QT.

Yelp
Delicious hole-in-the-wall. One word of warning: the *store* may keep one set of hours, but the restaurant portion closes (I think) at 2pm. (When in doubt: it can't hurt to call them and double-check.) Tiny capacity (only about, what, 6 tables? 8?). We had chicken enchiladas, samosas, and a raspberry dessert. The cook (Maria) came out and spoke to us once everyone had their food.
google avatar

Kat H.

Yelp
Only the locals know about this hidden gem. Maria is a fabulous cook and will make sure you are very happy with your meal...you'll be coming back again. There are new specials daily, but usually I just ask her what's good. She will whip you up some of the best Indian/Portuguese home cooking that you will have!!! Make sure you get a samosa too! She will know your name by your third time coming back!

Yelp
Stopped by, with a couple of friends primarily to try out Maria's Goan burger. Goa is a tiny state a few hours south of Mumbai on India's west coast and well known for its beaches, food and friendly locals. The Drop-In Store and Maria epitomize that Goan nature perfectly! The burger itself was excellent - juicy and flavorful - reminding me of India with the flavors, including coriander and cumin! Maria herself is very warm and friendly and likes to chat with her customers and after talking to us for a few minutes, offered some of her shrimp curry to try out and that was excellent as well! I intend to go back once Maria's back from her trip to Goa to try out everything else on her menu!
google avatar

Jeff J.

Yelp
There is a reason for all the great reviews. Maria and her kitchen puts out some amazing home cooked food. Try the Cuban, cooked perfectly and served as a generous portion on toasted panini bread. Side of housemade chips drizzled with just a little sweet balsamic. Also highly recommended- the shrimp spicy tacos, and the goan burger. I'll be back for those, for sure.

Yelp
Fresh, delectable, home-made, Portuguese/Cuban/Indian food. Maria is an brilliant cook and an engaging conversationalist. You'll never get bored with her company and she'll make sure you're fully satisfied with your meal... Her chicken soup and spicy shrimp tacos made my day!

Yelp
A delightful find! We visited based upon Yelp reviews (and out of mere curiosity), and were not disappointed. We didn't post photos since there were already so many (and because we started stuffing our faces the minute the food came out and didn't think about photos). One of the reviews had stated there were 6-8 tables, but in fact there are only 2 tables, with a seating capacity of 6-8 people. The normal hours of the restaurant are Monday-Friday, 11am-2pm. However, it doesn't hurt to call to make sure they're open and to check on the daily specials. Credit cards are accepted, but it's best to use cash if they're really busy. Our server, Liz, did a great job explaining in detail each of the items listed on the board (they do not have menus; everything is written on a blackboard). A sign listed several beers on tap. Non-alcoholic beverages are selected from one of the many coolers within the store, and paid at the front register (separate from the food order). The food is fresh, made to order, reasonably priced, and delicious! It's also served on a real (not paper) plate with real (not plastic) silverware. We will be going back (probably next week) to try the tamales. FYI: tamales are only made on Wednesdays, and when they're gone - they're gone, so make sure you get there before we do! :)

Yelp
Try to come here during the week for lunch. Kitchen is closed weekends. I would recommend getting the daily special, no matter what it is. And don't forget to get a samosa.

Yelp
I think I just ate the best veggie burger I have ever had, and I eat a LOT of veggie burgers, AND I am from Los Angeles. Maria makes the patties fresh when you order and they have kale, quinoa, etc. Soft texture and not lumpy or dry. Sooo yummy. Krinkle fries were pretty bomb too!
google avatar

Yelp
Maria's Kitchen is phenomenal fresh and delicious food made to order(so you have to wait a little longer than fast food, so what?) The feijoada is excellent and all the other dishes as well. I had lunch and I will be back for some more feels like my mother is cooking. Thanks Maria to bring such a great and delicious food to Greenville, SC

Yelp
Hands down, the very best food I have ever eaten. Delicious. Maria is wonderful too! I love eating here!!!

Yelp
After hearing so many wonderful things about the food here I had to check it out. Wow was I impressed! The food here is delicious. Not your average dining out, but it's a really neat concept....in a gas station. Different but cool. They have a menu that changes daily. Maria was very sweet and helpful. I had chips and salsa first which was crispy tortilla chips came out warm freshly cooked and fresh homemade salsa. So good! For lunch I had the shrimp tacos, which were very tasty. My friends ordered a hangover burger (which came with a fried eggs) the burger looked delicious and she said it was one of the best burgers she has had. Another friend had a brisket sandwich which she could not compliment enough about it. The sandwich came with house made chips drizzled with balsamic. Everything was very flavorful and freshly made. The waitress was very accommodating. Also since it is a gas station they have beer and wine that you can purchase and drink at the table if you would like or with your meal. We were very pleased with our first visit to the drop in and will be back to try more items in the menu! This hidden gem is a must try!!

Yelp
Best food in North Main and Greenville! Friendly, talented and personable chef! Also a wonderful aunt!! Check out her catering too!! Always great beer on tap and wine available!!

Yelp
Maria was nice in the phone, but the waitress needs to be a little less rushed and use gloves.

Yelp
I kinda don't want to write a review of this place because I feel too many people will discover this hidden gem. However, I have to give props to one of the top eateries in Greenville. Everything, and I do mean everything, tastes better than if your grandmother made it. Think about that...

J B.

Yelp
Interesting place in the back of a convenience store. I had the cuban and sopreseto. Both were delicious and cooked to order. Very friendly staff. Beer and wine available. I'll be back.

Yelp
I'm originally from New Jersey and we know drop-in stores. This goes toe to toe with the best! I mostly hate it down here but this place makes it worth while
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch today. Maria recommended the shrimp tacos and samosas. Both were excellent!! Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Great cheese burgers is all that can be said about this place. Price is great and the rest of the food is spot on. Sit back and enjoy this hidden treasure of downtown Greenville.

Yelp
Best food in Greenville! The chicken enchiladas are unbelievable!! Everything I've had has been great!

Yelp
This place is a really special spot. After reading some of the great reviews of this place I had to try it out. The restaurant is in the back of a fairly large convenience store. The chef Maria treated me and I ordered the Special Basmati rice with Goan Chorizo and a few vegetable samosas. First of all, the samosas were some of the best I've had in the US. The crust was so crispy and the filling was just perfect. So creamy and spiced with the perfect amount of Indian spices. The rice had a nice lemony tang and the chorizo was really tasty as well. It also came with a few chicken wings. They were crisp and nicely spiced. The chef Maria stopped to chat with me for a while. Such a nice woman with a great talent in the kitchen. Definitely coming back.

Yelp
This is Greenvilles best kept secret , I eat here every time I come home . The best veggie burgers in the world , and the chips are made from scratch.

Yelp
First a little history. The Portuguese and the French were the first to come to India and occupied opposite sides of the country. The Portuguese were on the west coast of India (Goa and Mangalore) and the French were on the east coast (Pondicherry). The movie "Life of Pi" was based on a person from Pondicherry. The English came later and took over the rest of the country. The Portuguese and the Spanish were very aggressive on conversions and a large percentage of Goans and Mangaloreans are Catholic. This history is relevant to the cuisine because Goans and Mangaloreans eat beef (unlike Hindus), pork (unlike Muslims) and being on the coast have a wide variety of seafood in their cuisine. The food in this region is unique and very different from north Indian and south Indian cuisine. Unfortunately Goans and Mangaloreans make up less than 1% of India's population and it is very hard to find a Goan or Mangalorean restaurant in the U.S. (apart from big cities such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and D.C.. Fortunately for those of us in Greenville, SC we have Maria from Goan, who has opened a restaurant and adds a few Goan dishes to her menu. The rest of the menu consist of Cuban, Mexican, Brazalian, other national dishes. While the venue is a small space at the back of a convenience store, I am giving this restaurant five stars because of the cuisine. For foodies and food history buffs, this is an opportunity that you simply cannot miss.

Yelp
Wonderful neighborhood store on North Main. Maria's food is excellent. Made fresh to order. The Cuban and burger are delicious. They are all so friendly too. Just the kind of place you want in the neighborhood when you need something quick.

Ashley J.

Yelp
Nice hidden gem! Have been 4 times and love it! Try and get the tamales when she has them, very good. Love the shrimp tacos. If they could make their own tortillas this place would be incredible. Good job Maria!

Tyler T.

Yelp
Best neighborhood place in Greenville. Anything you get is guaranteed to be delicious. Samosas and burgers are to die for. Also couldn't have a friendlier staff. Always a pleasure to eat there.

Richard W.

Yelp
If you're a true Greenvillian, you know this place. The nice lady that owns it is a master of her art. There is a little something for everybody. I can respect a small business owner and great food! If you work downtown, this needs to be one of your monthly lunch spots.

Tricia R.

Yelp
The best kept secret in Greenville. Maria's Kitchen located at the back of the store serves the best food in town. Her daily specials are unique and never disappoint. You can bet that each day you will find that there are too many amazing dishes from which to choose. The good news is that you can trust whatever Maria suggests for you.
