Great Spot Overall, But Wednesdays Are a Disappointment
I want to start by saying that Drugstore Cowboy is one of my favorite spots in LA. The food, ambiance, and overall vibe are amazing, and the bartender Trey deserves a special shoutout. Trey is consistently accommodating, friendly, and creates such a positive experience for everyone. If anyone deserves recognition, it's him.
Unfortunately, Wednesday karaoke nights have been a letdown due to the DJ, who I believe is named Alex. His poor customer service and unprofessional behavior stand out and really take away from the experience. I made sure to visit on multiple occasions to confirm this wasn't just an off night for him, but sadly, it's a pattern.
My Issues:
Overly Self-Indulgent Performances: I have never been to a karaoke night where the DJ sings more than the customers. Alex repeatedly gets on stage throughout the night--3 to 4 times--even when there's a long list of people waiting to perform. Karaoke should prioritize the guests, not the DJ's need for attention.
Disrespectful Behavior Toward Customers: During my recent visit for my birthday, I experienced firsthand how dismissive he can be. When my friend signed up before me but hadn't been called, I brought it to his attention. His response, in a rude tone, was, "I don't care, Bri tipped me, so I'm calling her." This was not only unprofessional but also incorrect since I hadn't tipped him at all. Comments like that are completely inappropriate and create a hostile atmosphere.
Unnecessary Interference: On the same night, Trey graciously got on stage to sing for my birthday--a sweet gesture that my friends and I were cheering on. Alex, however, cut Trey's song before it was over and insisted on joining him. It came off as petty and self-serving.
Lack of Professionalism: During a previous visit, I noticed Alex interrupting performers, again, mid-song to make comments on the mic, including booing guests who were expressing themselves after the election. Regardless of his personal views, a DJ should be fostering a fun, inclusive environment, not alienating or embarrassing customers.
Overall, It's disappointing because Drugstore Cowboy has so much potential to be the go-to karaoke spot. My friends and I truly enjoy the food, drinks, and main stage setup, but Alex's behavior on Wednesday nights is enough to keep us from coming back. There are countless DJs in LA who would bring better energy, professionalism, and customer service to this role. I hope management takes this feedback into consideration and makes improvements--we'd love to return if changes are made.
