Inside the New Carts at the Incoming NE Glisan Scout Beer Pod - Eater Portland

"Tyler Pathammavong — the owner of North Portland Thai spot Drunken Noodle and the Nob Hill food cart of the same name — is ready to switch it up. For a long time, Pathammavong has focused exclusively on a broad, traditional array of dishes Portlanders expect from their neighborhood Thai restaurants. But at his next cart, Pathammavong wants to try something new: Thai Me Up will specialize in Thai fried chicken, marinated in what he calls “massaman spices,” fried, and then served with sticky or coconut rice." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

When seeking out a family Thai restaurant, you are never sure what you will experience. But, this restaurant was recommended by a student on the campus of the University of Portland. The recommendation was great because the food was delicious. The restaraunt is located in a small unassuming building with a handmade sign in the front. Inside, the environment is comfortable and clean. The kitchen is visible from the area where you order the food so you can see the family style cooking in process. As the food is so good, I hope the restaraunt develops some combination patters so guests can try different things on the menu. As an international traveler visiting Portland, the restaraunt is certainly one I would highly recommend for a delicious Thai curry.

Google
Don’t judge a book by its cover. Tiny hole in the wall but the food and service was great. Fast and sooo yummy! Had the drunken noodle pad Thai and the yellow curry with chicken! Super tasty great service! Recommend!

Google
Best Thai in N Portland, especially St John’s area. Their Pad Thai & Basil Fried Rice is the best, they also do a drunken noodle version of Pad Thai which is cool. I love their traditional version though. Super nice family that runs it too!

Google
Reasonable prices for curry, fried rice, stir fry in chicken, veg, beef, or tofu with +$2 shrimp. Thai iced tea and coffee only $4 here! Good was fresh and fast. They appear to have an outdoor garden area which seems to get use in the dry seasons. There were a few tables indoors and we ate inside just the two of us while a few to go orders came in regularly. Glad I tried this spot it's about $14 a plate and appetizers including gyoza and spring rolls and drab puffs are $6. Fresh and well worth the price. We had pad see ew and thai basil fried rice. The pineapple fried rice is next on my list! Neighborhood favorite spot I know a lot of people eat there before and after karaoke at sundown on Tuesdays and they do a lot of takeout orders. Came back again to enjoy the pineapple fried rice and house yakisoba with pork add shrimp. Gyoza too-- yum!

Google
I just have to say absolute best Crab Rangoon I’ve ever had. Perfect amount of cream cheese to crab ratio and CRISPY AF. I put these in the fridge and microwaved them the next morning and they were STILL CRISPY! This defies the laws of Physics! Magic! And that cashew chicken was so fire. Undoubtedly using high quality ingredients. I want to eat here and every day!

Google
Enjoyed dinner while in the area from out of town. Typical Thai restaurant. Easy to miss when driving by as there are 2 trees blocking it from the road. Street parking available down the block. Food was great and portions were huge! Service was friendly and fast. We ordered drunken noodles along with the cashew chicken. They can make almost everything gluten free which is a huge plus. This is a pretty close rival to our favorite Thai place back home.

Google
We were on our way to see the Oregon State women's basketball team play UP. Why show the totally consumed empty plates? The food was GREAT & we were hungry!

Google
I don't think you can go wrong with anything you order here at Drunken Noodle, it's one of the best and tastiest restaurants I've ever been to. Not too crazy about the neighborhood but it's worth a try here for delicious food!

Yelp
This is kind of a hole in all place but I wanted to try some Thai food and this sounded good for the reviews and I was happy to have gone here. I had a chicken dish with rice and it was different from the other dishes I'd had before. There was a very tasty sauce on the plate and it went really well with the rice. It wasn't very spicy at all even though I think they said it was spicy on the menu My friend had yellow curry with chicken but he thought it was just extremely well done. It also came with a side of rice They didn't spend any money on the interior decorations. All the money goes into the food and it was comfortable enough but it was tight. There's only a few tables there. It's certainly worth giving it a try

Yelp
Perfect local Thai spot, my favorite in North Portland. They're quick, they're nice and personable in the restaurant when you come in, and the food is genuinely so authentically good, and for a great price. Their Pad Thai and basil fried rice is my favorite, you can even get their pad Thai drunken noodle style which I love the creative freedom of.

Yelp
Totally deserving of another star--this is becoming one of my favorite to-go places for stir fries and noodles. It's been quiet when I'm here and the service and food have been excellent. Other Yelpers call this a hole in the wall; they're not wrong, and the food is good.

Jon K.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, based on the 4-star reviews and the idea of finding a cool neighborhood joint. The service was very indifferent. The guy who took my order brought my food over to the table a few minutes later, but never came over to check in, or ask if I needed anything. And its not like the place was very busy. There was only one other customer in the store, and three take-out orders came in while I was there. Most importantly, the food was very, very bland. Just because I'm a white guy doesn't mean I don't like spice. Or flavor. I had the Drunken Phad Thai and the Spring Rolls. They were both hot, looked good on the plate, and the portion size was good, but it all tasted like cardboard. Other than crunch from the Spring Rolls, I couldn't tell one dish from the other. Dissapointing.

Yelp
Small shop but deserves the attention!! The food was great and flavorful! I ordered the yellow curry and the pad wood sen (noodles), both of which were great. There was only one worker when I went, and he cooked everything by himself. So please show some support

Yelp
Another just ok thai place in Portland. Super nice owners and the noodles are four stars. But my meat was very chewy and overcooked. I liked the vegetables in the dish and the flavor of the sauce. Spice level of medium but felt mild to me. I must have a higher heat tolerance than most people. Still hit the spot after a long day so I would probably try something different next time.
google avatar

Jeff T.

Yelp
Excellent hearty food, I tend to go for the fried chicken, it's one of my favorite chicken dishes around. The service is good, I usually take my food to go but it's a nice casual place to chill if you want to eat there.

Yelp
Drunken Noodle used to be great, but has gone downhill. I used to eat there regularly. They had the best egg rolls, but now they are gross. The last few times I ordered everything was sub par. What happened DN?

William S.

Yelp
The man who works the register and cooks is very friendly. Food was exquisite and the window had a nice view of the backyard. Classic pad Thai tasted amazing the sauce was on point. Crab Rangoon was some of the best I've had. The crispy fried chicken were huge and delicious. Portions are great.

Yelp
This place is a hole in the wall restaurant that will blow your mind. It's typically never busy here and the flavors are always consistent. When we went in, there wasn't anyone here at all and it was during dinner time (6:00 PM). We ordered the Drunken Fried Rice and Pad See Ew dish and they never fail to disappoint. Both dishes has the perfect combination of salty and savory. The prices here are also not too bad along with the service. Going to keep coming here until I have my last meal.

Yelp
Hungry between meetings. Close by school. Quick service. Good size. Drunken noodle w chicken.

Yelp
Don't blink if you're looking for the Drunken Noodle. I went past it because I couldn't see their sign. The tree line was partially blocking it. This place is for the take-out crowd. There is seating but it doesn't have the atmosphere to eat in. We ordered the Spring rolls, Pad See Ew with Tofu, and Drunken Noodles with Chicken. Standard good Thai food. Would order here again if we are in the neighborhood.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for pad kee mao (drunken noodles) so I was super excited to try this place but it unfortunately didn't live up to my expectations. The drunken noodles had little-to-no spice at all and the inside of the egg rolls were mushy... you couldn't tell there were supposed to be noodles in there. What was most disappointing was that I placed an order on their website for pickup in about two hours, received the confirmation email and text, then when we went to pick it up, they claimed the order didn't go through so we had to wait a while longer for them to make it on the spot. I specifically chose not to order thru Yelp/DoorDash because that site looked like it was missing a few menu items and I figured their official website would be the most legit space to order from. I would suggest calling in your order if you plan on ordering take out.

Sky K.

Yelp
Great food especially the fried chicken, so flavorful. I enjoy eating here with my girlfriend because it's no fuss and all about the food.

Kaitlyn K.

Yelp
An absolute must, has been my favorite place near campus since I was a freshman. The crab Rangoon's are the best thing ever and the rest of the food is great too! Always will recommend this place :)
google avatar

Daniel J.

Yelp
Ordered drunken noodles with extra chicken and veg. Noodles were great, chicken was tender and well seasoned. Vegetables were hit and miss...the broccoli was fine, the cabbage was great, the peppers were a little undercooked and the carrots were very undercooked. I'd still order it again.

Yelp
Food is amazing. And always hot! Can take home and not have to worry about being cold! Flavorful and filling also not too expensive

Yelp
Amazing food here, it was good to be back. Such quick and friendly service! Came just after the lunch rush at 1pm and our meals and Thai Tea were ready in less than five minutes. Ordered Chicken Drunken Noodles and the chicken was tender and juicy and the noodles were perfect with all the spices, veggies were a nice crisp tender and all was so delicious! Multiple people came in and got orders just as quickly with some to go orders being filled as well. I've really missed this place, it's so good to see (and taste) that the recipes are still fresh and flavorful!! Take a loop around the block to find parking and take a stroll. Clean restrooms as well.

Yelp
I've visited this place many times to take advantage of their $10 lunch specials - most of the time I order it to go so I can get back to the office. The last time I came in I was told it was "policy" to not offer lunch special pricing on to go orders ... but had done it at least 5 times before so I asked when the policy changed. The counter worker told me it was always the policy (not true or not followed, ever). Today I stopped in for a lunch chicken rice bowl and no sauce was included - walked up to the counter and was told "it doesn't come with the lunch special, only full price orders" ... WTF - the sauce is needed to make the meal worthwhile! I'm over this place ... they don't include the sauce and the veggies are discolored and wilted, all for the lunch special? I'll spend my money elsewhere ... too many restaurants to keep having issues. Previous Review: I had this place bookmarked for a while and decided to stop in for lunch today. There was no line so we were able to order right away. I love Thai curry so it is customary for me to get the Chicken Yellow Curry HOT which is what I tried. The menu of boba tea looked appealing so I also ordered a Taro boba. Food came out quick ... Boba tea was AWFUL ... after 1 sip I got myself a free glass of water. The boba had a weird texture and the tea itself was way too sweet. I do NOT recommend any of the boba teas ... they definitely do not match the picture on the menu. For the actual food ... divine! The curry was spicy and had the perfect amount of meat, veggie, and broth. There was just the right amount of rice that came with it. I NEED to go back ... just not for the tea. While on the main road, parking was limited and it was easy to miss - maybe a sidewalk sign would direct the traffic?

Yelp
The food is really good The service fantastic Anthem ambiance it's perfect I just love this place

Yelp
Really great of food. However, this is the second time I have had to go back because my order was wrong. Worth the trip just check your order before you go home.

Kylie A.

Yelp
Such amazing food! Literally always worth the wait. The inside is not the nicest restaurant, but by far the best Thai food I have found in Portland. Highly recommend!

Andrew A.

Yelp
This place has fallen off considerably in quality and service. We have tried a few times in the last year. Consistently greasy food, incorrect items, and lackadaisical staff. It was great when it opened now not so much.

Amy V.

Yelp
Love the food here and have been coming here for years. We feel bored/underwhelmed with small menu though. It used to have so many great options (pre-pandemic). Please bring back the panang curry or something more exciting! Edit: Removing 2 stars. Red curry is very watery and has hardly any flavor. :( This is very disappointing. Hate leaving a negative review, but I'm being honest. Feels like we paid $14 for light red water with steamed veggies. Noodles are good at least.
google avatar

Melissa E.

Yelp
I love the location of this establishment. I love the friendliness of staff and the super sonic speed we got our appetizer and meals! Even on a Friday night! The food was just ok though...my taste buds didn't go into over drive. I definitely will be returning and am thankful to have this option so close to home.

Yelp
SUPER food. Had the fried rice with basil and took it to the Sundown pub next door. Husband is scarfing it down after stealing it from me. Take this as a warning. Don't share. Order your own. Sharing is at your own peril
google avatar

Kristin S.

Yelp
Food was amazing. We had 4 dishes. Fried chicken was juicy and crispy. Pad Kee Mao, pad Thai were tasty too. We highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Kate W.

Yelp
I got the green curry and Thai tea and wasn't blown away. Curry was watery and didn't have much flavor. Tried my friends strawberry bubble tea and it tasted like Nesquik with old bubbles. Wasn't horrible but won't be coming back.
google avatar

Phil S.

Yelp
What a nice respite sitting in this cozy restaurant, enjoying delicious Pad see ew and Pad Thai while the buzz of burly and brusque Lombard streams 10 feet away. Next door, The Sundowner is a quintessential neighborhood pub with country on tap and even live some nights.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING! Super cool art inside, cozy casual setup, self-serve style. Most importantly, delicious Kee Mao, aka Deunken Noodle, the best in Portland we have found yet. Try this savory dish and you will love it. Not too spicy, but enough kick to get your taste buds excited.
google avatar

Tee T.

Yelp
Very good Thai restaurant that specializes in Noodle dishes. Their drunken noodles style pad Thai is a must try! I sometimes fear that Thai restaurants would add too much sugar in their food, but this place does it just right. You don't have to worry about becoming a diabetic after your meal. Good food, plenty of seatings, fast service all at a reasonable price.

Heather T.

Yelp
I can't say enough about how great restaurant is. The food is always fresh & tasty. Our families go to spot for dinner. Most importantly the wonderful people who own this amazing restaurant are so kind & happy to greet everyone who walks in the door. To the cashier who takes our orders, always smiling & kind too. We appreciate all of you. Thank you for making our neighborhood a better place.

Yelp
This place is really good and food is solid. Dropped off son to college and looking for place to eat . He loved it and will be ordering food from here .

Yelp
What amazing food!!!!! We had the fried chicken with Pad Thai sauce. Wonderful!!! Also the drunken noodles with shrimp were fresh and great!
google avatar

Yelp
Drunken Noodle delivers to the Sundown Pub next door! Score. Dishes are large enough to share -- Our go-to is the Pineapple Fried Rice, Chicken Satay and/or the Pad Thai with Tofu. Quality is consistent & good each time we order.

Yelp
Normally I NEVER EVER complain. I must say this about this place, when you order the Curry, nowhere on the menu does it say Curry Soup. The consistency of the Curry I got tonight was like tap water. Maybe I got it on a bad night because I've had it here before and it had a creamy consistency and went well with the rice. Tonight it was soup. Rice not needed. The worst part is that the Manager running the place got very argumentative with me about it and offered me no alternative. When he delivered the order to me in the restaurant, he even said "here's your soup". Staying away from this place as I didn't care for his attitude and poor Customer service. Treated me like he didn't give a *&^%. If the Owner is reading this....get nicer people to manage your restaurant. I've talked to you before, you're very cool.

Yelp
This place is sooooo good! I could be biased, because basically anyplace that has halfway decent Fried Rice and Peanut Sauce is gonna get a 5 star from me... this place has both! We recently bought a house in Saint Johns and have been trying out all the different restaurants lately, we were super happy to see that Drunken Noodle was still serving food during the COVID-19 outbreak! On that note, everyone was taking great safety precautions at the restaurant, mask wearing, glove wearing, safety shield between counter and kitchen etc. Now to the food, I can't speak for everything on the menu because I get the same thing every time which is the spicy basil fried rice with 2 sides of peanut sauce. That stuff is amazing! My fiancé gets different stuff though, she has gotten the drunken noodle pad Thai, and a couple different curries and soups and she has liked everything she's gotten! The prices are good too, as the fried rice is about 12 bucks and lasts me 2 meals, and could easily last my fiancé 3 meals. Only complaint I would have about this place is that they consistently only give me one peanut sauce when I ask for 2, its happened like 3 times now but thats a minor one, I just make sure to double check when I go in.

Yelp
Did I just find my new favorite dish from Drunken Noodle!? I order their Chicken Drunken Noodle almost everytime I come here but today I switched things up. I take friends here all the time when they're from out of town. Times are tough so I haven't gone out too often lately but today I was tired of eating my home cooked meals so I called in an order, drove over in 10 min, picked it up quickly, and scarfed it down the moment I got home! I ordered the Spicy Basil fried rice and it hit the spot! Super good! I hope to share these dishes soon with friends
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
This was the first place I ate when I arrived in N Portland when we moved here. I should say with take out I arrived in the middle of COVID-19 so take out was all there was. The food was better than expected from the outside appearance. I love eating at places that look like dives. I give the place 5 stars the food was great the cooks were friendly
google avatar

Raye T.

Yelp
We must echo what others have said - the food is pretty salty, it's actually making my tongue burn. We got the green curry and panag curry and both were strangley salty. I've never had curry that I felt had a salt problem until now. I'm not sure who is responsible for how the food tastes but I would switch out that person for someone new. Based on previous reviews, it looks like excessive salt is a consistent problem here in a variety of dishes.
google avatar

Shon K.

Yelp
Yet another fantastic type place in the city of Portland, and not too far from work which is always a perk. Portland has become quite the foodie city and it's always good to find a new spot where you can get something tasty to eat at a reasonable price no matter what part of town you're in. Four of us went into drunken noodle for dinner a week or so ago and everyone of us left happy. I got the grilled salmon daily special to parties got variations of the drunken pad Thai in the fourth member got a bowl of soup. Everything that was brought to our table was sampled and shared amongst each other in every meal was absolutely perfect. Here in Portland we have multiple type places to choose from and drunken noodle will definitely fit into my regular rotation.

Yelp
This little Thai place on Lombard falls under the radar, but it's time to let everyone know about them. After my second trip, I was at a place that I could write a honest review as the experience each time as the same. Great. I've had the Bun Bo Hue, Crab Puffs and the P2 ( Egg Noodle Chicken Soup) ( Pho ) The Bun Bo Hue is one of the best in town. ( $10.00 )The Crab Puffs ( 6 for $5.00 ) are stuffed with crab and just enough cream cheese to hold it together. Lastly the Chicken Pho or egg noodle soup they call it was a great take on it. ( $9.00 ) Check out the pictures as they plate wonderfully. I'm going to work my way thru more of the menu items and I'll let you know. All in all you won't be disappointed a bit.
google avatar

Andrew G.

Yelp
This place is amazing. I just moved to Portland 8 days ago and I've eaten here 5 of the days so far. It's so close to my house, I just take a stroll down there for dinner time. My favorite menu item so far is the Yakisoba Drunken Noodles (menu option N6). I've also had the Drunken Noodle Pad Thai (N2), the Pad See Ew (N3), the Grilled Chicken Marinated with Yellow Curry Grilled Noodle Bowl (G3), and the cashew chicken stir fry (S2). All were phenomenal. I like adding their Hoisin sauce to the meals which is delicious. I've also had their Taro flavored bubble tea which was great. They have an awesome outdoor garden area to sit or you can sit inside by the garage door that opens up like a window to the street. Their cooks are also incredibly fast. I haven't had to wait more than 7-10 minutes for my food any of the times I've been there. Definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Odulami B.

Yelp
I joined a "Postmates deliver party" and ordered some Pad Thai (always a safe choice) for lunch. To be fair.... I ordered this on a cheat day (trying to eat a little better) and was expecting a meal worthy of the depravation I had forced on myself for the preceding meals. I should have just eaten an apple. I have never had pad Thai this bland in my life. I tried to pepper it with Sriracha which made it edible but was still thoroughly disappointed. It could be they were mass producing meals to keep up with the Postmates party but there are too many other great Thai restaurants to double down.
google avatar

Tomas P.

Yelp
I have been here once and only once. I ordered the ph. I do not know what possessed me. Desperation, perhaps. There is a distinct lack of ph in North Portland. This is not the place to get your fix. I cannot speak to their other menu items.
google avatar

Gallie G.

Yelp
Great Thai food. Nothing fancy. But they do it right. You can eat in the restaurant or in the bar next door which is a great option when it gets to be a little later at night. The Pad See Ew is my go to.
google avatar

Mikki V.

Yelp
I have eaten here a couple times previously and it was pretty good, but tonight, it was awful. They lost my phone-in order under a stack of other orders, so even though I showed up twenty minutes after placing my order, I had to wait another 15 for them to actually make my food. I feel like my order should've gotten bumped to the front of the line at that point, but I was wrong. The peanut sauce for the salad rolls was a watery gruel that barely tasted of peanuts. I made my own peanut sauce at home for the first time recently, and it's not hard. In fact, it was cheap and easy and 1000X better than the stuff I was just served by a restaurant who gets paid actual money to make the stuff. Peanut sauce should be thick enough to stick to whatever you're dunking into it. This stuff was so thin and watery, we poured it into the rolls and ended up throwing it all out, especially since the rolls themselves were poorly rolled and severely lacking in filling. The noodle dishes were OK, except they confused the spice (I like it spicy, my husband does not) and even though the top of the box read "NO EGG" there was egg in the food. The biggest reason for the one star review however, is due solely to the man answering the phone and taking orders. He was brusque, he was rude, and he didn't apologize for the mix-up with my order or for making me wait. I get that people are busy and shit happens, but showing me a little humanity would be appreciated. In a town with so many excellent Thai restaurants (E-San, Chaba Thai), why screw around with sub-par, inconsistent food served by a jerk?
google avatar

Aimee W.

Yelp
I love Drunken Noodle, and usually get drunken noodle with chicken or pork. It's my go to meal after a long day outdoors, I usually think about it all the way on my drive back into town and order it over the phone so it is timed perfectly to pick up. The consistency of quality and freshness keeps me coming back.
google avatar

McKena M.

Yelp
Great place for Thai food in North Portland! As a super allergic to peanuts kinda gal, I'm not a huge fan of Thai food, but I do crave their stir fry wide rice noodles. I love the chewy texture of them. A good way to describe them is like lasagna sheets! I ordered the Pad See Ew (stir-fry noodles in a sweet soy sauce), which is similar to Pad Kee Mao, but without the basil and chili. Although I normally like those additions, I liked that the Pad See Ew had broccoli, carrots, and even small pieces of egg. The noodle were super bouncy and chewy which is how I love it and the dish only cost me $10 for a generous portion. I sometimes eat Pad Kee Mao at E-San Thai downtown for lunch with my coworkers for $14 a plate, which makes Drunken Noodles significantly cheaper for a pretty comparable dish. Additionally, my takeout order was ready on time and I could see that the guy wrote "no peanuts!" on my takeout container since I mentioned I was allergic to them. That makes me a extra happy customer!
