Bar and Restaurant Owners React to Tennessee’s New Anti-Drag Bill - Eater

"Tami Montgomery, who opened bar Dru’s Place in 2008 as a safe space for Memphis’s queer community. As an adult-only establishment, Dru’s is perhaps not at immediate risk of being raided for endangering minors." - Jaya Saxena

Came in as a visitor, not from Tennessee and never heard of this place but while looking for LGBTQ+ friendly spaces, this spot came recommended. Great. What I didn’t like is after my two friends ordered drinks from a random corner of the bar, I went to order my first drink from the same spot at the bar and the bar tender yells, “move to the service line and you’ll get faster service, over here to your right, get behind them and I’ll help you after them.” I’m not sure if it made me feel awkward or less than but because my friends are Caucasian I can appreciate that they checked on me to make sure I was good and asked if I was okay. I said yes, but I also did not want drinks from this bar. I’m grateful they could recognize something right away where I didn’t want to play that card. Mind you the spot the bartender told me to wait at says “Service Area, Do Not Block” 👀. Anywho I’d say go here to visit but get in the “service line”. The one that says do not block as pictured. The grumpy older gentleman with the glasses will tell you to move the service area where it clearly says DO NOT BLOCK. So maybe I’m just confused on where to go to get decent service for drinks without being yelled at. And I guess that’s alright.

Dru’s Bar is such a fun and welcoming place to be. It’s perfect for hanging out with friends or even showing up solo and meeting new people. The drag shows and bingo drag shows are full of energy, laughter, and talent—you can’t help but have a good time. What really stands out is how inclusive the atmosphere is. Everyone is truly welcome, and that means everything. The staff is friendly, down-to-earth, and always making sure you’re having a great experience. If you’re looking for a spot with good vibes, great people, and tons of fun—Dru’s is definitely worth checking out.

Google
I don’t have enough words to say how much I enjoyed DRUS bar—everything was top notch. Good vibes? Check. Friendly staff who gave me artist recommendations? Check. Adorable cat that is lovingly cared for by the community out back? Check check check. Above all though, stood manager Colleen who went above and beyond to welcome folks—from chats about aforementioned cat (best cat in Memphis, I’m pretty sure), to the pinnacle of southern hospitality in her generosity, she stood out. I left the bar feeling like I made a dear friend — check this bar out and give them your time and your money. Good drinks, good company, and outstanding hospitality. This Chicagoan will be back whenever I’m next in Memphis.

We had the BEST night!! We attended the “Wicked Experience” and it was incredible! The staff and performers were amazing and the whole experience was just great. I can’t wait to go back!

Google
Found this place because they had a left right center event posted online! Came with some friends without knowing anything about the place and we will be back! Daddy the bartender was so fun, pizza was yummy, and karaoke was a blast. Will definitely come back to see a drag show

From the service, food and drinks everything was awesome. We had 6 people in our party and we all agreed that this is a great place to visit a LOT. Karaoke was super fun and the sound system was awesome, which is hard to find in a lot of places . We met the owner. We met the manager and we met a lot of other people as it really was that friendly. Try the Pizza!

I'm not a karaoke person. But this is where my wife wanted to go for her birthday and I had a good time. It wasn't very busy, it was pleasant and everyone had fun. Plus there's a cat, so....automatic 5 stars.

Yelp
I am back for my annual visit to Dru's Place. What a great bar offering wonderful Drag Shows and Karaoke! It was such a fun evening celebrating "Eleanor Rigby's" Birthday followed by some singing talent. The bartenders are great!

Yelp
Nice little neighborhood LGBTQ bar in the heart of Midtown, Memphis. They have karaoke, drag shows, trivia, and more. Dru's is always a lovely place to gather with friends and have a good time! Staff are friendly and attentive. The bar is now nonsmoking and they have liquor, wine, THC drinks, and nonalcoholic cocktails. Check their website for nightly events. There's something for everyone!

Yelp
I had an amazing time celebrating a friend's birthday at Dru's place. The staff and over atmosphere is so inviting and fun! Although I didn't order any food from the menu, you best believe I drank! Lol! They have the cutest names for their drinks and you can tell from looking at the ingredient listed under each of them that they would be unique and taste good. I had 3 drinks including The Phoenix, Sweet Tart, and Dragon. When I say they were refreshing and mixed so well, listen to me. Some of the best drinks I have had. The bartender told me that he mixed all of the simple syrups and came up with the unique recipes. The night as capped off with a lot of karaoke fun, music, and dance. Such a good vibe and I can't wait to return!

Yelp
This bar, which caterers to the LGBTQ+ community and its allies, has become a home away from home. Tami Montgomery, proprietor and supreme benefactor to the community hosts some of the most wonderful parties, drag shows, drag bingo, and fundraisers in midtown. The bar has upgraded during the pandemic to serving a full liquor menu, beer and seltzers. They have wonderful pizzas as they always have, as well as fantastic flat iron style burgers. They give steak 'n shake a run for their money with the grilled onions! Drink prices are very fair!! Beautiful patio outback for smoking, or just catching some air. Don't forget to tip your drag queens and bar servers generously. Singles are available to be changed at the bar. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for current events and upcoming specials!

Yelp
Come for the entertainment & stay for a few cold ones also be sure to try out some of their menu selections from their pizzas to the rotel chili & fritos. I never thought of going here. Until a friend asked if I wanted to go & see a show. After we just finished seeing a concert at the Peabody Rooftop. His car was in the shop for a short time so I said yes & obliged. I enjoyed their Rotel Chili and Fritos along with their Non Alcoholic Bush which all items were reasonably & I got away with a under $20 tab. If you want liquor they offer a BYOB set up. I never really view Drag Shows but this was pretty entertaining to see the variety of singers dancers and performances. It was a good time with a good friend. If he ever invites me to join him I'd be happy to. Feel free to check out their sister clubs The Pumping Station & Spectrum. Be sure to check out. Yelp
It's 10 o'clock and this place is hoppin! The crowd is coming in and a show is on the itenerary. Everyone is lively and warming up to just a having a good time. I can't wait for the show to start. If you're all about music from the 80's and 90's then this is the place to be tOnight. Ain't no stepping but the show is definitely about to get started up in here. I'm on vacation, no kids, no work and free to enjoy life in the moment. Tonight I am right here for right now. Not an evEryday opportunity but it is for tonight. #peaceandhairgrease

Yelp
I have been at this business several times and usually my experience is truly amazing. On this particular night the normal bartender whom is named Brandon was out sick. There was a young lady bartender and she was extremely terrible. I am not one who normally notice when someone is treating customers different; however my close friend told me to watch how she was treating us. Once I started to notice these are the things which caught my attention. 1. She was pouring her white customers more than her other customers. 2. We were drinking shots of Patrons with bud light beers. When we asked her the price of Patron shots she stated she didn't know the price. We were shocked and stated if you don't know the price of shots; how or what are you charging us. 3. We ordered a pizza also and once we saw the cook bring the pizza out. It sat in the bar for about 8 minutes before we finally informed her our pizza was sitting on the bar next to her. She stayed , am sorry I didn't see it. I was so disappointed that I normally tip around 25% on my bills for tips; however during this experience I didn't tip anything because my entire experience was horrific. In the future if I don't see Brandon when I come to Dru's Place I will immediately turn around and go to another establishment. Please have a talk with your staff and inform them to treat all customers the same and know the price you are charging your customers.

Yelp
We had a group come for karaoke to celebrate post race. Karaoke was fantastic, service was amazing and the pizza was good as well! We all had a great time and the staff truly made us feel welcome. I'm only disappointed I was too tired to stay longer.

Yelp
Can't really rate anything other than they asked for my ID last Friday around 12:45 A.M., I gave it to the lady, then she proceeded to take a PHOTO of me...why, I have NO IDEA, but since we were buzzed, I allowed her to take the pic, THEN...........................she asked for a $10 cover? Uhm, doubtful! We left and went to eat at Huey's because we were hungry and desperate. Unless you are offering the patron a drink coupon, or some sort of GOOD entertainment, don't expect me to come into your establishment and pay you an entry fee, then give you more money to buy liquor - that is like the government taxing us to pay our taxes. Another location in Memphis that had about 6 people inside, and a DJ or something, but nothing worth my $10.

Yelp
This is an awesome, safe, open place to visit to watch an amazing show, to have a cold drink, or to Kiki with the girls for the night! Great staff, friendly staff, excellent service! If your in the Midtown area stop by and say hello!

Yelp
Let me start by saying that I love the environment here and the bartender- as much as he's allowed to tend is great at his job! Quick, efficient, and the shortest wait ever. This bar is bring your own alcohol. You're charged to bring your bottle in- and don't try to be sneaky- I saw someone's alcohol get confiscated and disposed of because he didn't pay to bring it in. I was there Saturday night for the drag show and the talent was amazing! The lady at the door checking bags needs to go. She was very snarky with us, and made us take some hard water back to the car because they serve it there. We would have been totally okay with that. No need to be rude. Next time I will probably opt to go elsewhere just because there's no full bar.

Yelp
Cool as dive bar. I'm a comic in town at the Monday open mic. It's cool hang out nothing extra. But this pizza is amazing... Major surprise. I had a slice of someone else's pizza and I had to buy one. I wasn't even hungry!! This is a diamond in the rough. Swing by. That simple cool bar + amazing pizza!

Lighting G.

Yelp
My fiance was performing here one night, so in support for her I wanted to show up. I paid $15 for a ticket at the door. Started my way towards the stage viewing area, and got stopped by someone else (later found out she was actually the owner.) She told me the viewing area was full and I couldn't get in. I was so furious, I had to leave before I made a fool of myself trying to argue. Dru's Place "bait and switched" me, and stole my money. If they were sold out they should've told me at the door before I paid!

Yelp
Love this place. Owner is fantastic. Drinks are good. Love love love the new patio. A+ highly recommended. Feels very progressive in handling the covid situation.

Yelp
I had no idea this place even existed! What a pleasant surprise. First thing you should know is that they are a beer bar...as in, they only serve beer. But! They will let you bring in other alcohol with a small charge. I think it was $5? Such a great deal because I brought a whole bottle of Tito's with me. Second, their karaoke contests are no joke! They can sing!! If you are musically challenged (like me) then you can enjoy the pool tables..or witty conversation. I also really enjoyed the country music that was being played before karaoke started. They also serve some tasty looking pizzas if you get hungry. I don't drink beer but I would definitely pop by again!

Yelp
I had always heard great things about this place. While I went in on a Tuesday and it was pretty empty, I still enjoyed my visit here. Looking forward to coming back when they have a show happening but I'll certainly bring cash. Credit card transactions come with a fee unless you buy two drinks (and a pitcher only counts as one drink). They also hold $25 on your account a couple days until the actual purchase amount clears. While this is relatively harmless, if every place I visited that night had this policy, I'd be out $100 for 4 days. Kind of inconvenient on a student budget.

Yelp
unfortunately, super bummed by this place. my partner and i showed up and we're completely ignored by both members of the male staff. we eventually had to order off the QR code to receive a drink (only people not getting served) the drinks were cheap so that is the only reason for the 3 stars, we tried to get change for the drag show and the bartenders wouldn't even look our way so we left five minutes in.

Yelp
Love this place.. visited once this past Saturday with a friend... we unfortunately missed the drag sbow ..but caught the karaoke ... you are met with a double sided bar... so there's no reason why you wouldnt get served promptly .. it has unisex bathrooms which are very clean ... you ca write in the wall.. they have chalk for you ...you have a smoking sode and non smoking (side with the stage).. it's just a good ass time ... I didnt have food I o ly had a draft beer .. it was good as any other ..but I came for the atmosphere and was not disappointed at all..love it

Yelp
I've been a few times. I played pool. I had a few beers with some friends, and even tried a bit of karaoke. I've always had a nice time and have been treated well. They have a jukebox from 2035! I swear! Awesome fun! The last time I went was in October of 2013. I went with a new acquaintance who got out of hand and was eventually asked to leave. (This person was asked repeatedly to take it down a notch. The staff really tried to make the best of the situation. (I was impressed...aside from a wee bit of feeling mortified.) I was not forced to go. I apologized for my guest and left still feeling welcomed. The staff was understanding and down to Earth. My kind of people. (If you were there that night, thanks for keeping it cool.) Karaoke was fun. I translated lyrics into German when I couldn't hit the notes. People laughed and clapped. Great place! I'll be going back with better company.

Yelp
Dru's Place is a neighborhood gay/lesbian bar in midtown Memphis. It's small, yet cozy. The owners and staff are super friendly. They don't have liquor. Although you can bring your own and pay for set ups, or you can just order a beer. They have a few draft beers and plenty of bottled beers. I went with a PBR this visit. They have events every day. Here are ones I copied from their website: Monday and Tuesday- $14 Pizza & Pitcher (1-5pm) and Happy Hour All Day Wednesday- Happy Hour ALL Day and Karaoke (8pm) Thursday- DragTime and $5 Beer Bust (10pm) Friday- Early Bird (7pm-9pm) with $2.50 Domestics and Karaoke w/Ali (10pm-1am) Saturday- Drag Show and Beer Bust (10pm) and Karaoke (1130pm-230am) Sunday- Bottle Cap Bingo (5pm) and $5 Beer Bust (8pm-10pm) and Karaoke They take it seriously to keep it clean and safe in the bar. I have been for karaoke and for drag shows. They also have a pool table. They have a little food. They had rotel dip, that I wanted so bad last time I was there, but I had just eaten so I resisted. Next time....

Yelp
Yikes! The bartender was definitely nice and efficient, however the Smokiness was just horrible! The atmosphere was lacking for me and it really had an old dingy feel to it.

Yelp
I love Dru's!!! Friendly people in a pleasant environment. When I first stepped foot in Dru's it felt like home. The beer is cold, the people friendly, and karaoke fun. They have the best and, in my opinion, the most beautiful bartenders around. I am usually there Fridays but can't wait to try Thirsty Thursdays.
google avatar

Cyndie S.

Yelp
This was the first bar that me and my wife went to together new year's eve of 2012. We had a lot of fun and truly enjoyed ourselves. We recently met some of dru's place drag queens at tupelo MS. for tupelo's first LGBTQ pride day. It was awesome and I would like to thank them all for their performance at the tupelo pride day.
google avatar

Derrick A.

Yelp
The woman taking karaoke requests kicked my coworkers and me out of here because "we don't belong". Score one for equality apparently. As for a review, they only had PBR and Bud Light on tap, so gross.
google avatar

Paul F.

Yelp
Went here for a drag show, which was great!! The beer was super cold which makes you aces in my book. Service was good and they had a surprisingly good beer selection for a dive bar ( beer only !!!! bring your own liquor if you want a mixed drink) mixer prices were more than fair and a good size. No cover even with the show I will be back!!!
google avatar

Christian M.

Yelp
This place was a lot of fun. However instead of Yelp I used google like an idiot and found out this was a gay bar when we walked in LOL! So funny, me and my dad were just like "oh, I think this is a gay bar" bahaha(we are heterosexual lol)! But oh well we don't care, they are people just like us so we didn't mind. We sang some karaoke(sounded awful) and had a few beers. The people were super nice and really engaged with whoever was on the stage no matter how good or bad they sounded. Fun place! It'll be even better once they can serve hard liquor, but you are allowed to bring your own for a small charge so that's still good! Check this place out gay or straight! It was awesome!
google avatar

Nadya K.

Yelp
Great LGBT bar! You can enjoy music, play pool, eat some pizza or just enjoy the events they have some nights. Always have had a great and friendly service! Now looks great!!

Marie B.

Yelp
Our first time here and they made us feel like family. Reasonably priced drinks and the nicest staff I've met! Plus the performers are amazing!!! I can't wait to go back!!
google avatar

Camille D.

Yelp
After being treated like utter crap, on her birthday no less, by The Pumping Station, my daughter and I stopped in at Dru's before going home. The bartender was warm, personable and very understanding, apologised for the crap heads at "The pump" and even offered to buy us a beer. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Yelp
I had a great time at Dru's Place this weekend. It was my first time there, and it did not disappoint. Everyone was so welcoming and nice. Karaoke was a blast, and there was much more talent there than may be found in your normal karaoke hangout which made it that much more enjoyable. There are also some of the cleanest bathrooms I have ever seen in a bar at this place, and there are even chalkboard walls with chalk provided to write on them! Really fun and a great idea if you ask me! Do be advised that it is a beer bar (you can bring your own liquor and they only charge for mixers though!), and you can still smoke inside which did cause me some burning eyes by the end of the night. Overall, it was a great experience that I would definitely repeat!
google avatar

Justin F.

Yelp
Honestly it's what Memphis can offer. It's a small bar that allows smoking and has no liquor
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
I gotta say, I love this bar! I always have a great time. They have karaoke on Friday and drag shows on Thursday and Saturday. No cover and friendly staff. Now I do think they could use a better ventilation system. When they are busy the place gets full of cigarette smoke. They do have a really good pizza you can order.

Lauren H.

Yelp
I WILL NOT BE RETURNING! It was one of the worse bar experiences I have experienced. I would give it negative stars if that was an option. The staff were very rude! I saw online that they only sold beer but "you are more than welcome to bring your own alcohol". However, what they fail to mention is their "bottle fee" once you entered the "bar". I really don't think they have a real liquor license but still want a way to profit off liquor. The guy who brought this to my friends and I attention had a terrible attitude about it. My friends and I were having a quick discussion if we wanted to leave or just stay for a minute (considering we already paid our cover) or just leave and he continuously yells at us "I will put you out if you don't pay. I will put you out if you don't pay" after I told him MULTIPLE times we are going to pay give us a sec. But he continued to yell at us. It was a horrible experience so we ended up leaving bar.

Jimmy D.

Yelp
If i was going to sum up Dru's place it would be - Magical I drove and hour and forty five minutes to go to this place with mixed feelings Being older or i thought older than most bar people would be, I was very surprised to see a mix age group among the customers, staff and performers. I am considering of coming back to the drag scene and did up a photo to present to the performers for suggestions. They not only gave suggestions but let me into the back room so that they could show me what they was doing. I watched as ordinary looking people become super stars on stage, it was like they had a magic wand in their hand as they took their time with detail precision Food is pizza and dipp. I ordered the pizza with a choice of two out of three toppings and in my mind, i was thinking it prob be some flat bread over done pizza. No, The food is also magical, with each bite, I was thinking to myself they have magicians that dwells here. Beverly Hills who was the host of last night performance shown brightly as if an angel blessed her with a dazzling light. again, when i met her before the show, I was skeptical because we did not click right off, but as the makeup was applied, and the magical wand seemed to pass by her, she became a rare rose. Alexis, I cannot forget her, even if she was deemed as an out of city performer. She was super sweet, and very angelic. A little flirty, but that is good too. Both of them was my mentors in the back dressing room, so I just wanted to add a special thank you for both of them for showing me the transformations Dont take my word for what i seen on a thursday night at Dru's. I just wanted to let everyone know to me. The place is filled with magic and down to earth people.
