The Best Restaurants In San Jose

"There are plenty of hit-or-miss banh mi spots in San Jose, but Duc Huong, which has four locations across the city, is never off its game. With consistently crisp yet pillowy french rolls, plus pickled and julienned veggies with a perfectly tart punch, there’s virtually no way to go wrong. While we're partial to the grilled pork, you can pick from 17 banh mi options in small or large sizes (the latter will set you back an astonishingly low $10 or less). Before you order, check out the fridges and shelves that are full of great pre-made snacks like steamed pork buns and sticky rice cakes." - shoshi parks

Google
Great banh mi and other sandwiches at a good price. Makes me feel like I'm back in Southeast Asia. Only thing is that I wish there was a bit more of a clearer menu.

Google
Milpitas Duc Huong is not like the San Jose one. Disappointed to come all this way just to find out the only serve two types of banh mi. Chicken or pork. No menu. There were some small ham banh mi premade but looked questionable on a hot day. They also dont have the B4G1 deal like the San Jose location. Worker didn’t speak any English but still was able to order without issue. Recommend going to the San Jose location.

Google
Their bahn mis are extremely delicious and they are pretty affordable (about 10 dollars) The only reason I deducted a star was bc of the long lines. There’s a ton of ppl everyday getting their bahn mis but they only have 2 cashiers. And the wait time is quite long. If you really like clean place,I don’t recommend this place.

Google
service was good. very nice. it's not a place to stay, it's a place to get good food takeout. very affordable, however it is cash only.

Google
We tried to order a couple sandwiches here on a Saturday afternoon. The older gentlemen said that they're not making anymore and tried to sell us old, small sandwiches that have been sitting there all day. Why aren’t they making sandwiches to order like most locations? We immediately walked out. DO NOT GO TO THIS LOCATION.

Google
Could you please have a notice “CASH ONLY”? And also have “pull”and “push”on the door? Im really sorry that I cant understand Vietnamese!

Google
All preprapared items you can just grab and pay. Other fast moving items are prepared and not refrigerated. If you order more than is wrapped on the counter they will make more fresh sandwiches. Biggest concern is the store temperature is the same as ambient temperature so sandwiches that are sitting for many hours in 90 plus degrees..... remember that this is a cash only business. No credit cards!

Johnny C

Google
This place does not do buy 4 get 1 sandwich. Banh mi is at least $8 each. No deal here. I will not return!

Serena Z.

Yelp
30-40 min wait but so worth it because it's made fresh and hot. I always come here when in SJ

Yelp
This was the first Duc Huong location I visited because it was kind of on the way back to the hotel from the office. This was not the location that I bookmarked. Yeah, I got lost and took the scenic route once again. I ordered the cold cut combo. They took my cash. A few minutes later, I drove the banh mi back to the hotel. The bread was good. The cold cuts were exceptional. The meats just seemed superior to the ones I normally get in the OC. If they put more pate on it, it would've been a great sandwich for my taste. The banh mi was good. I liked it. It's a good place to get a sandwich.

Yelp
Visited this Duc Huong for the first time. Unknowingly passed by this place to eat at Pho Kim Long. The parking came get challenging during peak hours. There is another lot across the street. This place has not seating, so it's a grab and go place. CASH ONLY. The service is friendly, though limited English. They offer other Vietnamese prepared lunches, like rice noodle rolls, desserts, etc. *#1 Combination: cold cuts, pate, pickled daikon/carrots, cucumber, cilantro, & jalapeño (3.5/5). The sandwich was filled with slices of meat. Though, the bread wasn't toasted so it was a bit chewy. Otherwise, the sandwich was good.

Yelp
I had the mini bahn mi a few weeks ago from another location and it was SO good, turns out there's one 5 mins away from me. This time I ordered the large BBQ Pork and everything about it was DELICIOUS -- except -- 1/4 of the Bahn Mi was a CUCUMBER! When I took the cucumber out you can literally use the Bahn Mi as a telescope -- no joke Anyways, I recommend y'all stick with their mini ones or go to their other locations.
google avatar

Cecilia Y.

Yelp
Got the Cha Lua sandwich with pate and it was CASH ONLY! It was about $8-$-8.50. The sandwich was fine! The space is smaller so there's not much of a waiting area. It does get busy though.
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
I'm not sure if this is the location my company catered, but this sandwich was bomb.com. Can't wait to continue visiting my nearest Duc Huong for Banh Mi sandwiches.
google avatar

Carolen M.

Yelp
We were looking to get a banh mi so instead of going to a different one that's nearby, we decided why not try Duc Huong again? Well we did get lucky as we found parking as someone was leaving, but it's awful trying to park here during peak food eating times as you're basically competing with all the people who are going to Pho Kim Long. So just be aware of that when heading there. It's strictly a to-go spot. They have some premade food/snacks and desserts. Sandwiches are okay. Pretty much a deli-style spot kind of feel. Again not a bad spot to get a banh mi, but the parking situation can be a deterrent.
google avatar

Tiffany T.

Yelp
Not comparable to the SJ location but it's good enough for a quick meal. We get the combination banh mi and banh mi thit heo nuong. They also have decent deserts like their flavored sticky rice or the taro rice cakes. Love the chunks of taro in there! Don't bother calling to preorder. I tried that once hoping it could help me expedite my trip but they don't start making it until you're there anyways lol

Yelp
(CASH ONLY) The goat for fresh, crisp baguettes to use in homemade banh mi. It's located next to a popular restaurant so the plaza might be full. But since I go in the early mornings just to pick up some baguettes to-go, it's not that busy. I just park in the 30 min pickup spot and then go. The store is small(which is the reason some of the reviews are rated low) but I feel it was intended to be a quick pick up spot, not a cafe. It serves its purpose to the community. The baguette bags get sold out really fast (you can imagine what this says about them). By noon, its usually definitely sold out (or there might be a few bags left if you're lucky), so prepare to come early if you wanted just the baguette. The half baguettes come in a bag of 6, which makes it easy to make individual sandwiches. Bring them home, heat them in the oven for a little bit, and you get a crisp crust, fluffy interior that isn't jarringly sharp nor crumbly like typical baguettes. Today I messed up because I grabbed two bags of half baguettes and there's 6 in one and 4 in the other. I don't know if the 4 bag is special/different in some way or if I just picked up a mistake bag on accident. Doesn't matter to me though since it came out to $5 for the two bags (super affordable)!

Yelp
Wanted to pick up a quick lunch and decided to grab some bahn mis. I had heard about Duc Huong for a while but just never had a chance to stop by. This location is a small corner shop in the same plaza as the famous Pho Kim Long. I recommend stopping by during the morning or after the lunch rush because parking can be difficult. I stopped by around 11:30am on a weekday and there were already a handful of people in and out of the shop. I ordered 2 bbq pork bahn mis $8.50 each, made fresh. Note: they are cash only!! I didn't know and luckily had some change but was still a dollar short. The lady at the front counter was so nice, telling me not to worry and still gave me my order. I was so thankful! And now I can see why Duc Huong is so popular: the baguette was so fresh and stayed intact when holding all the inside ingredients. There was a good amount of sauce and veggies and the bbq pork was incredibly soft and flavorful. One of the best quality bahn mis I've had for a great price. I'll be back and with cash next time!
google avatar

Constance L.

Yelp
Cash only! Sandwiches here are fresh and tasty, but the menu is much smaller than other Duc Huong locations (e.g. no grilled pork and egg option). The fillings in the small banh mis are also more skimpy than other locations, literally half the amount of meat. Solid in a pinch though if you're in the area.
google avatar

Sheila K.

Yelp
My husband and I were in the area and he wanted to try this place out. It's to go only and doesn't have any seating areas. It's also cash only. My husband got #1 & #2 banh mi sandwiches (they didn't label it so not sure which one was which lol). Both were just okay, not the best not the worst. I personally wouldn't get it again since there wasn't much taste to it. We also tried Banh cuon. The wrap was thin but there wasn't a lot of filling, lots of it was just the wrap itself. The fish sauce had a good amount of spice. There was also some green dessert that my husband got which had coconut milk. It was alright, probably the best one out of everything we got.
google avatar

Kristine D.

Yelp
Food is good! Banh mi is better than Lee's--the bread is fresher and more crunchy, tastes more home-made in general. They sell a lottt of prepackaged foods and desserts like banh uot, banh cuon, etc. so naturally we got a bunch of those as well. Service is quick and organized and employees are friendly. Ambiance is typical of a smaller banh mi shop I would say. Gives deli vibes since there's a bunch of drinks (also some made fresh like sua dau nanh and teas) then the prepackaged foods placed around/center, and a line around the prepackaged foods to get to counter to order food.
google avatar

Danielle F.

Yelp
Best banh mi ever! I got into banh mi's recently and Duc Huong is the best place I've tried yet. I don't eat meat so I get their vegetarian sandwich, the vegan meat seitan they put in the sandwich is so yummy. They add veggies and these very umami mushrooms. I'm obsessed. The bread is fresh baked and the perfect texture. When I went in, the staff was very nice but they only take cash so I had to just go back home and DoorDash it because I didn't have cash. So keep that in mind. The ambiance is just like any other banh mi store, no place to sit really, just takeout.

Yelp
For the establishment on Story Rd.... The sandwich was very good. However, this review is for the employee who verbally and physically attacked a man who was selling fruit near their store. This older lady who is apart of the establishment was sweeping in front of the store. She proceeds to yell at this man who was minding his business that she was going to call the cops on him and that he is "no good". After much verbal abuse and other intimidation tactics, she proceeds to hit him with her broom. Multiple people had to step in and tell her that she cannot continue to hit him. Other passerbyers offered to call the cops for that man, since the lady physically attacked him. After people stepped in and told her she was in the wrong, she put the broom into the building and drove away. I cannot continue to support this establishment if their employees practice this blatant racism and abuse towards ANYONE in the community. It is NOT OKAY to intimidate people, harass people, threaten to call the cops, and ESPECIALLY attack someone who is minding their business selling fruit. I hope that this establishment rethinks how they interact with community members as it looks like they are incredibly racist and abusive. I do have a video of this employee attacking this person.

Yelp
That restaurant is absolutely the worst! They started arguing the moment I called to place my order, the service was terrible, and all they cared about was the cash. It was truly the worst experience! I think it's problematic to run a business under Duc hong 's name when they can't keep promises with customers like this.
google avatar

Melissa N.

Yelp
the thit nuong was 10/10 banh mi! the flavour was really good and the banh was nice and crispy but not too much where it's hurting your mouth if you know what i mean pretty fast also long lines
google avatar

Truc M.

Yelp
CASH ONLY!!! If you don't have enough Cash with you, don't come! The parking is crazy! The foods are just ok!
google avatar

Whitney T.

Yelp
My last stop in SJ before leaving town and wanted some really tasty banh mis! We ordered a combination and a grilled pork banh mi that was $8.50 and 8$ each! We also grabbed a bunch of pandan desserts and they were also really good! We got the pandan sticky rice, pandan jello, and not sure what the other one but it came with coconut milk to dip with and it was really good! The two banh mi's and three grab n go snacks came out to be 28$ total! I love how big the banh mis are! The bread was soft and doesn't hurt your mouth when you bite into it. Super flavorful and filling!

Michelle C.

Yelp
Wonderful food. We love it here! Highly recommend. Affordable and tasty. Service is quick even when there's a long line.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Can't vouch for the sandwiches, sadly, because the folks in front of us got the last baguettes they had (and we were hoping for banh mi), but we did get a Vietnamese coffee, and it was pleasantly riding the line between the bitterness of the dark roast and the sweetness of the condensed milk. We'd certainly come back again for the coffee, but the report on the banh mi will have to wait until our next visit when they have bread in stock! (Probably says something that the sold out by late lunch, though!)
google avatar

Yelp
This is a one of the duc huong sandwiches place in the bay. Less crowded than the other location in SJ area. They also have a lot of premade Vietnamese food plates and desserts. Ordered 2 sandwiches, steam rice cake with mince pork, Bánh Cuon combo plate and cha Lua. This place also do not accept card. Bring your cash if you want to buy food. Premade food is good but sandwiches were a disappointment. The lack of meat and veggies in the sandwich for $8 is costly. See photo Honestly, I would come back for the premade food options but wouldn't order the sandwiches again.
google avatar

LeeLee C.

Yelp
Cheap eat across from PhonKim Long in the same plaza. A Vietnamese store selling premade meat, sandwiches, rice noodle roll and desserts. It's a grab and go shop, no place to sit. Some of the food seemed hot made as they were still hot on the shelf, such as the banh gio. Price is very reasonable. I got a plate of rice roll for $6.50. The only downside is that they take cash only.
google avatar

Steph F.

Yelp
After my go-to sandwich spot closed, Duc Huong has become my new go-to spot. It's a tiny place with a steady customer base coming and going. They sell cute, half sized Vietnamese sandwiches that are premade as well as the regular size sandwiches, averaging $8 made to order. The only downside is that they only accept cash.
google avatar

Kim P.

Yelp
This place is not the place. I went here at 1 they did. It have any baguette. When I ask the lady questions she was so rude. This place dose not have a lot of stuff on top of that the quality of food has gone down so bad I would not recommend another one. This place really quiet and not a lot of people.
google avatar

Vijay R.

Yelp
Food is good and garlic Banh mi is great, but service sucks. They normally don't a lot of veggies and I asked extra on the side. The said I already received and I should consider paying an extra 10 dollars per pound. First of all, I don't need a pound. Why not just give a little bit more? Veggies are soooop cheap compared to protein.
google avatar

Celine M.

Yelp
You honestly can't go wrong with banh mi from Duc Huong. I will say this is probably the worst location because the sandwiches aren't as well made and the selection is much smaller. However the sandwhich still tastes phenomenal .
google avatar

Crystal H.

Yelp
Love their Banh mi, Nem chua ($12), pork floss ($8.50, not sweet), and Gio Thu ($12)! They have the best nem chua around. Not too sweet, great portion, and price. Not sure where they get the Thai chili, but it's really spicy. It would be perfect with a big slice of pickled garlic. The Gio Thu is really good too. It's not oily and doesn't break into pieces when you cut it like Thanh Huong. It's cash only. The elderly man doesn't speak English at all. I'll come here even though there's a language barrier. Just show a picture of what you want. The best alcohol snacks around.
google avatar

Chan T.

Yelp
Best grilled pork banh mi, ever! You can ask for the veggies on the side if you plan to eat later- they will pack them in a little plastic bag for you. The buy 4 get 1 free deal is the best! And I love that they have a mini sized sandwich.
google avatar

Ky H.

Yelp
The worst location I've been to. They gave a sprinkle of pickled veggies and didn't get any of the extras I asked for nor the pâté I paid for if you have the time, stick to the story or McKee location

Serena L.

Yelp
The best Bahn Mi sandwiches I've ever had! The bread is so fresh- crispy on the outside and soft inside. I had the grilled pork and the grilled chicken, and both were meaty and tasty with just enough veggies. Go here every time I visit San Jose.
google avatar

Doug C.

Yelp
Iconic cheap vietnamese sandwich shop. Multiple locations. No where to sit at this location. This location is the cheapest and most run down. The entrance has a car which smashed into it which still is damaged. Crunchy ham from tendons, not the standard mostly muscle meat ham. SW has cucumbers, cilantro, pickled sweet daikon carrot, cheese. Eat one for 3.50 and order more if still hungry. Fresh baked bread. Number of items less now post pndemic. No english menu. Mostly vietnamese speaking customers. The large size bahn mi for 7$ is larger than any sw from subway or togos. This is the last place I know in the south bay with a 3.5 sw. Focus is on cheap. Most customers on food stamps and they can't afford a 10$ sw.
google avatar

Nina D.

Yelp
Simply PERFECTION! Only had yummy eats on my trip to Santa Clara. This is perfect for anyone looking for a quick, cheap meal. I got the chicken banh mi to go and LOVED it. The chicken is super flavorful and they add all the works. Warning that the jalapeño definitely has a kick to it. The bread is also so perfectly crispy and fluffy (you can even buy it separately which I might do in the future!). They also had a lot of other sweets and drinks inside. The staff is friendly and though there is a line it moves very fast. Orders also come out fairly quickly once you're finished checking out. There isn't any seating though and they only offer to go.

Q Q.

Yelp
We went to the wrong one. Hahahaha but said why not. Small place and cash only. Typical Asian place. If you're not Asian then you are not next. hahahaha. All good, we let it go. after about 3 people went ahead of us it was our turn. Cash only. Like the other yelpers said, limited selections. got egg rolls, they were cold. Sandwiches were super skimpy. We will make sure we go to the right one on Story Road in East San Jose.
google avatar

Daniel X.

Yelp
The most iconic Vietnamese sandwich shop in the Bay Area. Definitely a must try if you want to get authentic Vietnamese flavor. Came here during weekday morning, and there is still a long line waiting to order. It is so popular that so many people are ordering in bulk. They have a buy 4 get 1 free deal. I think all sandwiches are delicious, the pickled vegetable is what stands out for these sandwiches. They balance out the fat from the protein and provides the acidity and freshness you need to take more bites.
google avatar

Cassandra I.

Yelp
Can't go wrong with the spicy Korean pork! Good sandwiches for a good piece. Got a bunch before a hike with friends and it was the perfect sandwich to bring

Jamie H.

Yelp
Much smaller menu. Wasted my time going there. Very disappointed. Assumed all their locations were the same.
google avatar

Xochitl L.

Yelp
Recently discovered this place and so glad I did. Always delicious and always great service. Highly recommend their coffee too.
google avatar

Ja J.

Yelp
Our go to banh mi place to order for office lunches. The bread itself is so good. Tried the combination, grilled pork, beef. Heard the vegetarian is also good.
google avatar

Jason P.

Yelp
Best banh mi in the bay, if not the nation! Whatever banh mi you get, always ask for their garlic bread My go to is the #2 which is the classic Vietnamese cold cut with pate. Their bread is crunchy but yet soft and it doesn't hurt the roof of my mouth. A must stop whenever I'm in sj.
google avatar

Benny C.

Yelp
My brother picked up a bunch of their sandwiches and I got to try both the combo and the grilled pork sandwiches. Combo- This sandwich was pretty standard. It had all the usual fixings of the regular combo banh mi; pate, pork roll, pickled carrots, and others. It was decent. The bread roll that they used seemed very similar to the regular bread used in banh mi sandwiches but smaller. Solid sandwich if you want something quick and tasty. Grilled pork- I actually like this sandwich a little better. My go-to is usually the combo but the grilled pork here in my opinion was the better pick up option. Pork marinade was savory, yet sweet, but not overwhelming. The cilantro and pickled carrots and radish added a nice texture and really complimented the grilled pork. Solid spot.
google avatar

Jane D.

Yelp
Horrible service. All other duc huongs have buy 4 get 1 free, they also accept card. This location doesn't have the same bogo deal and only accepts cash. You can call an order in and they wont start making it til you get to the store. The sandwhiches are not as loaded aa other locations. NEVER COMING BACK TO THIS LOCATION. Stick with McKee or Story road.

Yelp
Crazy value, there's a wait for a reason. They close late, but be careful, they run out of bread before they close usually.

Kim D.

Yelp
The worst customer service of all time. The Bobby hair cut lady at the register was so rude to the client. After picking an item out of the refrigerator and noticed it had mold and selected something else. The lady was so unpleasant with no namer telling the client not to pick and choose without having any clue why. She even said if I can't sell it to you then I will sell it to another client. Are you for real even after I told you something looks odd about the food??!!! If she is the new owner then good luck because attitude like her I rather go to other places. Yet not to mention the parking is terrible and they only take ca$h
google avatar

Mylinh V.

Yelp
My favorite Vietnamese sandwiches. This location is not like the other on story road. This one is limited with sandwich options and does not serve the garlic bread but the food is still great! Parking here and be a mess so be patient. The parking spots are a little tight too. Service is quick and friendly here. The staff are all super nice! It is a busy story so make sure you know what you want to order but also don't forget to browse the prepared foods along the counters! The sandwiches are made to order and are always great! I always get the đặc biệt and am always satisfied. The break is always crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
google avatar

Nat T.

Yelp
....so....I honestly think that Yelp should consider changing the cover photo for this location--because, I drove over on my lunch break for an egg banh mi...and...umm...they didn't even have any eggs!! I usually frequent the Story Road location, & this is my usual order. Since I didn't feel like waiting in a long line; I decided to try out this shop instead. Bad decision. The line wasn't too bad when I arrived. Once I got to the counter, I tried ordering an egg sandwich. At this moment, I'm not sure as to why the cashier was able to confirm an order in English with a lady who had a pick up order, but was not able to understand me when I asked for eggs? Anyhow, I guess I will have to stick to the Story Road location...but....I also think that all locations should be consistent with one another (...and...again...Yelp needs to change this cover photo for apparent reasons).

Yelp
Why is this place in business?? Walked in to order sandwiches and the old man says "no more" and gestured to already made sandwiches on a platter. How is there no more at 4:50 in the evening. Lazy and bad service to customers! Don't waist your time at this place!! Heading to the one located off McKee!

Eric J.

Yelp
Bought a box of hop pate from them on Saturday; the texture was bad, the flavor was off, and threw up from it. went in today to get a return, but the two Vietnamese ladies rudely told me they could not do anything nor give my money back. they pointed at the box and said "bad, no good, no eat" - BUT THIS WAS EXACTLY HOW THE PRODUCT WAS SOLD TO ME. don't waste your time here if you don't speak vietnamese, it is a chaotic mess, the people working here are rude, and i am seriously thinking about reporting them to the health department
