The Best Restaurants & Bars In The University District

"The Duchess has been around since the Great Depression, but it’s aged well. Sturdy wooden booths contain the etchings from customers of yesteryear, and there’s a Hall Of Foam wall where you can get your name on a plaque if you drink every rotating beer on tap. The snack selection works great with said beer, particularly the tasty grilled chicken sandwiches. Immortality is up to you." - aimee rizzo, kayla sager riley

11 Dive Bars With Great Food

"This dog-friendly, UW alumni bar with billiards and darts is a great spot for a last-minute hang with your friends. Hot wings and burgers take up most of the menu, but we’re particularly fans of their pizzas, crispy little shoestring fries, and buffalo-coated chicken fingers that are way better than their bone-in wings." - aimee rizzo

The Duchess Tavern Review - Ravenna/Roosevelt - Seattle - The Infatuation

"The Duchess is a dive bar that’s one of the few places in Seattle where dogs are allowed inside. Which means it’s great for when sitting outside isn’t in the cards. Here you’ll find pool tables, UW alumni watching sports, and fried bar snacks that are probably coming from freezer bags but are exactly what you want with pitchers of beer. And, even though grilled chicken at a dive bar sounds like a last resort, theirs is very tasty." - Aimee Rizzo

This place has been in business for almost 100 years and it’s a great little neighborhood sports bar. The beer is cold and the service is always on point. Great place to watch a game and shoot a game of pool.

Google
Great neighborhood pub for a beer and food. We tend to stop by during the week when it’s quieter, but we’ve also been there for game days which are a good time. Service is good and the food is tasty. The fries are a must. Plenty of games including pool and darts. Make sure to bring quarters with you. We also love this place because we can bring our dog with us.

My Quaker seemed to enjoy the pizza enough which seemed good to him. I was pretending it was vegan as I watched him (kinda watched him) eat his pizza as we shared rugby goals for tries vibes with obvious flawless plans.

Google
I drank so much beer here that they gave me a cool camo hat. This is one of my favorite bars of all time

Google
It's a college/sports themed dive bar that has been here for a hundred years. You have beer, sports on TV, kitschy decor, bar food that is tasty and plentiful and YES!, dogs are welcome. If you are coming here for anything else than the above and to spend time with friends then I am not sure what your purpose is.

Google
Great place for a burger and a brew. Ravenna/Bryant iconic pub.I go mid week for a relaxing, dinner and drink. Friendly staff. Their burgers actually taste like a burger should, fries are always hot and crunchy. Now serving pizza too!

Google
College staple bar! I've been there 40 years ago and it's still the same atmosphere! Great pizzas! Loud but that's a part of the atmosphere.

Google
Awesome bar with a friendly vibe. The kitchen has some tasty food as well—we got the chicken tenders and cheese steak. They have 3 pools tables. So, there’s usually one open. New favorite bar in the area!

Yelp
This was the college bar back in the day and apparently still is. I came here to meet a friend on a Saturday night for a Husky game and had a great time. The tables in the upper part of the bar were full, but there were plenty of seats at the bar itself and the TVs were sufficient for watching from there. There was also room down by the pool table and the crowd was a lively mix of college students and alum. We ordered the wings and fries and they were great. The food was ready quickly and they call out your name. I love all the local touches including sounding the siren after every Husky score and some of the drinks named after Husky things. This included the house beer, which was only $3 per pint. The staff is friendly and try all 40 beers on your punchcard to get a free hat! If you're a Husky, you'll feel right at home here!

Yelp
Went here last weekend to watch the Apple Cup. Our group of friends have been coming here for 25+ years. We all agreed this was our last time coming for a big game. We knew to get there early to get a table and get something to eat. People who arrived after kickoff had to wait in a long line outside and even then some people never made it in. We also expected it to be a loud frat party atmosphere but this year was worse than ever. 2 young men were completely wasted by halftime. We alerted security to keep an eye on one particularly obnoxious kid. Wait time inside to order a beer or food was 30 minutes!!! We left at halftime because we were done with it.

Yelp
The staff is the worst I have ever seen at a bar. the vibe inside the bar is fantastic but completely ruined by the staffs direct insults and visual disrespect towards paying and tipping customers

Yelp
They have great wings and delicious burgers. Definitely try the double bacon cheeseburger - it looks amazing, and I'm ordering it next time for sure.

Yelp
Came here with some co workers on a Friday evening. Drinks were priced fairly and the food was great. I ordered the chicken tenders/fries and it was pretty good. They have fun games like a few pool tables and TVS. I appreciate that you can bring your dog in here and hangout with them. Parking wasn't too terrible to find around 5:50 PM ish. The bartender was super nice and helpful when I couldn't get the Juke box working.

Yelp
It was a busy game night, men's basketball, UW vs Gonzaga. The beer line moved fairly quickly, the food took a bit longer than normal, but once received tasted great. The staff did their best to keep up & provide updates when needed. If you're a bit tight on money, keep in mind you can still get an $8 pitcher here from the "Husky tap". It's the champagne of beers, Miller High Life!

Yelp
This place is home to the many, the Mighty UW Huskies! Been coming here for so many years, excited to freshen her up a bit! Welcome back!!

Yelp
Best "dive" bar in Seattle. Hands down. Food is good, beers are cheaper than other places.

Margot L.

Yelp
Soooo weird. Came here on a chill date night and gave our IDs at the bar, I'm 22 he's 26. She takes our IDs and consults 3 others saying "just 2 more minutes" each time. Comes back and says "I'm gonna give these back to you but I can't serve you tonight. I can't accept these" .... As if they're fake IDs and she caught us in the act! Lol. We were like umm ok.... Truly so bizarre, I guess they get a lot of underage folks being so close to UW but you'd think they would be able to distinguish what a real ID is. Safe to say we won't be returning ??

Yelp
A fantastic bar in Ravenna. The staff are friendly, there is a lot of space for groups and the food is great! The drinks are great and there is a full service bar and beer. There is a variety of food that is made fresh and tastes fantastic. The fries are crispy and seasoned well. The Buffalo chicken wings are great as well!

Yelp
You come here for the $9 "Dawg water" (Miller high life) pitchers and you stay for the pop-a-shot. This is a classic Husky dive bar and while it isn't anything too special, they know what their vibe is which is cheap drinks, decent bar food and all of the makings necessary for a good night. There are plenty of games to go around with pool and shuffleboard tables, and 10 or so TVs on the walls featuring various sports games each night. You know exactly what you're getting as soon as you walk through the door. 4 stars for being able to knock back 8 beers for $18
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
Great place to hang before a Husky game if you want beer and bar food! You do have to wait in line to order food and drinks which is the only draw back. Otherwise, its close enough to walk or take a quick bus ride as an option to tailgating!

Yelp
Bartenders are very rude. Told my mom that they are sick of "mothers and sons" coming in the bar and when she asked what we did wrong he said he was just having a long day. Later in the night my friend accidentally knocked over a cup which led to him getting cut off and when he asked why he was told to "get the fuck out" and was yelled at in the middle of the bar. Overall, had a really bad experience with the bartenders being rude to most of the people I knew. Would not recommend to anyone there are far better bars in the area that are more appreciative of their patrons.

Yelp
Visiting from Arizona and Erika was our server when we came in. She was the best!! So friendly and welcoming from the start. Great conversationalist and made it well worth the visit. Make sure you ask for Erika and don't forget to tip well!!!

Yelp
Went here on a chill Friday night. Clair was working the bar and she was fantastic, she provided superior service and the kitchen always serves great food and drinks! A weekly ritual for me and my bestie.

Yelp
I've never left a bad review before but here we go: My friends and I attempted to go here to watch a husky game. We are all alumni and have been here on countless occasions and I am still in awe of how we were treated this past weekend. I have never been one to combat anything said by a security guard or manager of an establishment, but this situation was so jarring to me. While the circumstances may have been correct for us to be denied entry (not for being drunk, because we were not, but for sharing a white claw amongst a group of 4 to not bring in outside food/bev), the way in which the manager handled the situation had me speechless. Long story short, I came from a place of curiosity when asking the manager, Natalie, if this was against their policy. As we were waiting to speak to her I could hear her very clearly mocking/mimicking me to the security guard. I tentatively responded "hey, just letting you know that I can hear you" to which she smirked at me and said "good". I poked inside, not very far so they wouldn't think I was trying to come in, but I just attempted to have a normal conversation. In the middle of my explanation of events, Natalie says "get the f*ck over it, it's honestly sad that you're trying to beg your way into a dive bar". My mouth dropped and I couldn't say anything then she just started saying "bye, get the f*ck out of my bar, bye" while waving. I'm very non-confrontational and was trying not to cry so I simply turned around and left. This made me feel so nauseous the rest of the night as I've never been spoken to like that, especially not from someone in a management position. I highly recommend that the Dutchess reevaluate who is at the forefront of their establishment and ensure they are at least somewhat stable enough to treat people with common decency.

Erin B.

Yelp
Talk about dog friendly ... total bullshit. Thicker female security guard said it was "gameday" even though it was 10 past midnight ... and that I couldn't bring in my dog. We've never heard of that rule before nor seen it posted indoors. Not to mention that her defense was that it was "super busy" and I could count on one hand how many patrons were in the bar from the outside window. This security guard is brand new and I would not recommend to go when she's working. Super disappointed ... used to love duchess, even their warm beer.

Yelp
Great place, lots of space with pool, shuffle board, juke box, plenty of tv's. Great friendly service.. also offers a little outdoor seating as well. Lots of history in this place.

Olivia K.

Yelp
Usually this place is great! We were there tonight July 29th and it was pretty busy me and my friend ordered a drink and as the bar tender handed me back my card and I was signing the guy next to me goes "excuse me can I order a drink" the bar tender went off on him saying f*ck you wait you're f*cking turn and just screaming at him and throwing stuff across the bar cussing him out for no reason. I've worked customer service and I know how frustrating people can be however his reaction was absolutely unacceptable and so unprofessional. This man should be fired. never should you talk to a customer the way he did especially someone who was trying to be polite. If I could give 0 stars I would just based off the interaction I witnessed. I regret giving the tip I did to someone so unprofessional. Ew

Yelp
I'm absolutely taken back by the way I was treated at the duchess this evening. We were a group of 7 people drinking 1 white claw outside the bar. We were then told we could not enter the bar despite being sober and well above the drinking age. We asked to speak with the manager to understand the policy further. The manager Natalie approached our group and verbally abused me and my girlfriends. She used profanity and was extremely disrespectful to our group. She then made faces at us as we left the bar. We have never been treated with that much disrespect. I've been going to this bar for 10 years and never have I been disrespected at this level.

Alicia B.

Yelp
This bar is a hole in the wall. Rude service. I asked for patron and.was served a double. I asked for salt and he asked me why. The Hennessey was mixed with GIN AND WATER.... CHEAP BUT NOT WORTH IT.
google avatar

Doug N.

Yelp
They refused to let us in and allowed others to get in. They have a 100 person capacity and we counted 30 people inside. The owner talked to us and was quite the asshole
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
This is a fun cross between a neighborhood dive bar and college bar. It gets busy before the UW husky games, but it's a pretty big space so doesn't feel super crowded. Their bloody marys are delicious! Menu is simple, but tasty and reasonable. Quite a few tv's for sports. Service can be a little slow and there can be a line at the bar.

Yelp
Have been here many times with friends and it is always a good time! A nice, relaxed bar to enjoy a beer or two and play some pool at! Most recently I brought in my dog as I remembered seeing a sign saying they were welcome and it was awesome! All the employees were so happy to see him and gave him a lot of treats. Everyone was extremely nice and it made it fun to be able to bring him out with me! Will definitely bring him back when I am down in Seattle again! :)

Meghan M.

Yelp
Duchess is a pillar in the Northeast Seattle community. It serves as home to UW students, alum and locals alike. You can come to Duchess sober or blackout and still have a great time. It has everything you need: food, alcohol and games! You can play shuffle board, pool, darts and more here, all while spending quality time with your people in a classic Seattle establishment.

Yelp
I love a good tavern. We came here over the weekend for a friends birthday gathering. The service was awesome, the drinks were cheap and the people were so nice! We mostly kept to the back room with the pool tables and shuffle board, which kept us busy for hours. The perfect place for a large gathering!
google avatar

Yelp
A decent dive bar, dusty, somewhat dirty and stuff everywhere, foods not bad. Service was average but it is a dive bar
google avatar

Yelp
I've been in Seattle for about two years and Duchess Tavern has the best pizza I've encountered in that time. In a bar I was almost expecting a frozen pizza but it was freshly assembled and seemed to use quality ingredients. My only small complaint is that the pizza took about a half hour to make it to our table. Not a huge deal as they seemed busy, but the also only had one guy doing all the cooking. The beer selection looked pretty solid and there is a whole room of pool tables and some other bar games. And, they're dog friendly! Would definitely hang out there if it was in my neighborhood.
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
If your looking for a cool place to hang out, play pool and catch up with friends the Duchess is the place. The prices are super reasonable!
google avatar

Trey W.

Yelp
Overall, it's just a very average bar with very average bar food (read subpar). Duchess is located right next to a home supply brew store which ironically does not encourage a more exotic beer selection. This is a place for locals, older UW students and recent grads who have stayed in the area. For regulars it gives off a familiar hometown bar vibe and if you're from out of town it may not be for you. The patrons are what I would expect of seattle post-msft but pre-social media boom. The kind of place where regular people with regular clothing and regular lives go. It's refreshingly devoid of fashionable yuppy transplant tech bros.

Yelp
This story is going down as one of the strangest interactions between a patron and one employee at place of business. The bar is surprisingly big, and even though it is categorized as a dive bar, it looked like a typical fun sports bar. You order food and drink at the bar--ordering off of their billboard menu. The service I personally received was pleasant, but it took a turn for the worst (and bizarre) when I re-entered the line later to order (guess what? More food!) with my friend. When my friend was handed his pitcher of Miller Lite (yuck haha) he questioned his bill being $24+. (He ordered a burger, sweet potato fries, and that bubbly-beer-water.) The bartender raised his voice, and was aggressively tapping the beer pitcher rim, saying the beer was $12. Now, I didn't see his finger go INTO the beer like my friend observed, but then [he] wiped his finger off after he was done with his tapping tantrum, so I guess I can assume... My friend asked for another pitcher, and when the guy refused, he asked another bartender, so begrudgingly, he gave him another one. He said that he was lucky he wasn't charging him for the new pitcher too O_o My buddy then asked about the bill again. He asked how much the fries were and the guy said $8.25. Let me tell you, this guy is REALLY worked up now, and we later learned it was because he was lying through his tooth. I was like, "Dang, thems are expensive fries!" The animated bartender goes on to say that bills are MARKED UP 10% if paid by credit card. Blank stare from us. He points to a sign, that says that tabs paid in cash won't be charged sales tax. Friend: "That's great, but I don't see where you charge 10% MORE on a bill because of someone paying with a card. " This didn't add to the bartender's warm fuzzy feelings he is dishing out to my friend. Finally, I decided that the bartender was nucking futs. Do you what to know how much the real bill was? Miller Lite $9 (not $12) UW Burger $4.75 French Fries $4 (not $8.25) ...and...my friend had STILL left a $5 tip. Even after how Crazy Town treated him. Later my friend went back up and the guy gave him back $3.50. Oh good. He overcharged him by $7.25, he got a $5 tip=$12.25... and then gave my friend back...$3.50. The rest of the staff were great. I would love to come back but that was just too much drama at my friend's birthday party to deal with. Please check your bill, guys.

Yelp
This place is a real dive, but in a good way. The theme is UW sports, and they do a good job of stirring up school spirit with every inch of wall space covered by some Husky memorabilia. They have two main rooms on somewhat of a split level. The top level has the bar and a decent amount of seating. The bottom area is a kind of game area, with two pool tables, two dart boards, a table luge game, and a broken basketball game. When I got there at 8 on a Friday night, the place was pretty empty, and the bartenders were super nice. By 10, the place was so packed, you couldn't move (probably beyond fire safety capacity), but the bar tenders were still nice and quick on the service - something uncommon in busy bars these days. Overall, a fun place to hang out after a long week of school.

Yelp
$12 Hoegaarden pitcher. I could end my review right there. But alas, I shall tell you more! But, the pitcher prices here are incredible. There's a pretty large selection, but there seems to be a focus on pale ales, which I don't like (although that seems to be a problem in Seattle in general). If you pay cash, they don't charge you tax, so bring some cash and save a buck or two. The food here is also pretty good. We've tried the fries ($4), onion rings (~$4, can't remember), and buffalo chicken burger ($6.50). Everything was really good and not too expensive at all. There always seems to be a large diversity of people here. When we've come later at night, the music is very loud so takes a bit of adjustment to be able to have a conversation. We thought the music was really good though- some top 40 stuff, some country, a nice mix. When we came more for dinner time, it was quieter and there were a few sports games on. It's a very laid back place, but awesome for a fun night out at a great price. Between the beer prices, selection, and food quality, my boyfriend has decided this is his favorite place in Seattle.

Michael F.

Yelp
Don't bother... I gave this place two chances, based on a friend's recommendation. The first time I couldn't get in the door. A pub with a red rope? F*%k that...the second time I was a bit desperate and looking for beer and chow at 10:13pm on a Saturday night. The kitchen closes at 10pm...on a Saturday night. Meh...

Yelp
I have been here once and never plan on returning. Several reasons this bar sucked, first it was probably one of the most plain and boring bars I have ever been too. I love dive bars but this place really had no character at all. Second the staff was extremely rude and literally harassed people to leave 30 plus minutes before closing time despite the fact we were only half way through our pitcher of beer. Finally I am very very confident that there liquor is not what they say it is. I ordered two crown royals for myself and my girlfriend upon drinking them we both instantly felt sick and could clearly tell what we were drinking was not crown royal. Normally I may have said something but the bouncer already seemed pissed off at everyone and was looking for a fight. So if you want a crappy bar with bad service and crappy drinks go to the duchess that seems to be their specialty.
google avatar

Kit F.

Yelp
Good husky crowd, but instead of hiring a cute woman to waitress, you have to stand in line for drinks
google avatar

Greg K.

Yelp
Old farts just left me at the bar. Wow,I sit there for 5 mins and you ignore me.... This is the 3rd time I've been here and the 3rd time I've left early and disappointed. This bar isn't a great for college students and it isn't great for locals. Maybe they should employ a younger crowd or be respectful to ALL who come in.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
The Duchess is interesting. The bar is old and it shows. It's nice though, it has a friendly atmosphere and the regulars and staff are super friendly. They have a pool table on the upper level and a large lower level for more seating as well. One of the highlights of this bar is they have a pretty cool outdoor seating area, it's a nice play to hang out in the summer. Besides that this bar doesn't have all that much going on for it. You can find everything this bar has on the Ave. This bar is a one stop destination since you can't really bar crawl anywhere from here.
google avatar

Robert L.

Yelp
How have I not discovered this place sooner?! Actually, it's probably a good thing I didn't discover this place sooner....if I found this place during my college years, I definitely would have failed more classes, and apparently shuffleboard and pop 'n shot isn't a very good excuse to fail a class...that's right, this place not only has a shuffleboard (which already stole my heart), but it also has pop 'n shot! My new lover. It's one of those basketball games where you have 40 seconds to shoot as many free throws as possible, and it's only 50 cents a game! so naturally I spend more money on this than on booze. The other thing that's gonna keep me going to this place is the Beer Hunter Club. Duchess has 40 different beers (nothing really that special, stuff like corona, bud, coors, etc.), and if you successfully drink all of them, you can make it on their wall of fame. Just ask one of the bartenders and you'll get you're very own punch card. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't mind becoming immortalized in Duchess history. 8 down, 32 to go.
google avatar

Lejla M.

Yelp
Greatest bartenders, cooks and bouncers work at this place. Being that I am Bosnian, I find the way they communicate to be refreshing, honest and entertaining. Good pub grub, wholesome deep fried ingredients. Drinks affordable and stiff, probably the best spot in this lonely neighborhood of rich and privileged. The loveliest thing about this joint is that the staff really cares about each customer especially the ones that share the same sense of humor with them, like me. On one Saturday when Seahawks got into playoffs by sheer luck and everyone was at the bar to watch the game, I came to ask them if I they can hook me up so I watch AMA Supercross racing on one of the TV's. Jared did not even know if they had Speed TV, but very soon I was watching Motocross racing. I would laugh every time one of the other patrons looked up and was stunned not to see Seahawks play. Now that is what makes this a local hangout. And they love dogs as much as the people. Awesome.

Yelp
This is a serious place for Huskey fans as they always have a game on. They also have pool tables, that shuffleboard game, and a bunch of tables to slosh beer around on that were salvaged from the special ed department of a lizardman high school. Best chicken sandwich I've had in a while. Awesome onion rings. Fun bartenders who were like retired pirates. Their days of plunder are over and now limit themselves to selling pull tabs. A fun place!

Yelp
My uncle used to spend his nights here during his 6 (yes, 6) years of college so when he came up for a reunion tour, to the Duch we went. I was really fearful after reading the prior reviews, and even suggested we eat lunch somewhere else. I can now see that I overreacted. The Duchess was fine, totally fine - full of Huskie mementos and funny signs and sayings in a real way, not a cheap Fridays or fake sports bar kind of way. On slow days they allow dogs in, and although we decided to leave their German Shepherd in the car, there was a bulldog puppy to amuse us. A small crowd of what I confirmed to be "retired coaches" were having a pow-wow, and they only worked to solidify the atmosphere. The burgers looked good, and I felt a bit guilty that I'd nixed it for lunch. Please forgive me, Duch, you're A-Okay!

Yelp
Good bar. I went on a slow night so I can't elaborate on the actual feel of the place. Pool tables, Shuffleboard, darts, smoking patio and decent drink prices. Dog friendly bar too if ya got a pooch!!
google avatar

Kaylee A.

Yelp
Central to the university district, good food, great wine selection and a friendly atmosphere. If you're lucky, you can meet the pub dog, who will happily pick up anything you've left behind. Not a place I would call classy, but definitely relaxing and a good place to watch a game!

Yelp
The Duchess is a dive bar tucked away just north of U Village in Ravenna. This place is a popular hangout for college kids during UW football games, but otherwise attracts a wide mix of patrons, including the four-legged variety. Duchess features a full menu of decent pub fare (the chicken burgers are great!) and a decent selection of local craft beers and timeless favorites (read: PBR). The lower level has a whole bunch of bar games... pool tables with purple felt, pop-a-shot, and a great, long, non-bumpered shuffleboard table. During the summer on Saturdays the bar is packed with Softball players (Sauceballers) and it can be nearly impossible to move around let alone get a drink. Speaking of which, you better play nice with the bartenders here or they will just ignore you. If you're a decent person, leave a good tip, and are not remotely douchey, you might get served with a smile. Somehow the tab always ends up being more than I expected. Not sure if beers overpriced or just having too much fun. So anyway.... bonus star for being super dog-friendly! Official Dog Policy: Well-behaved leashed dogs welcome during non-peak hours at bartender's discretion. Yelp
I came here to watch the game we order drinks and food right away we decided to play pool and Tashi basketball and wait for our food by the end of the game we noticed we haven't got our food the food was there waiting for us called stating that they called our name Multiple times the bar is not very full and the innercomm that sounded like high school intercom Was tested and we would've definitely heard it if our name was called the name was Brandon very common name I don't know if it was because of the color of our skin but I demanded a refund off our bill. The drinks were great mini pool tables but food service was terrible chicken strips fries and onion rings all cold and overdone just know they do not seat to your table or at least not us they will also not leave behind the bar to call out for food. We will not be back, fried food doesn't take 20+ minutes

Yelp
It is what it is. Dives will be dives. This particular dive is a beautiful one, at least insofar as dive bar beauty goes. The Duchess is NOT a 5-star dining establishment- it's a dog-friendly bar that features bar food. Self-seating, self-service, etc. Decent beers on tap. Full bar. The bar staff were older gentlemen who were very friendly- almost reminiscent of an east coast bar (Boston-ish feel). I felt welcomed and could've stayed all night had it not been for other plans. While I'll never have control over the crowd (which included a skanky hipster girl who rudely cut in front of us at the bar as well as a load of extremely loud sports fans), I liked all that the Duchess had to offer. P.S. - My pooch loved that he got to hang out with the "big kids" and join us for our night out... he was even offered a water dish and treats.

Yelp
If you're looking for modern architecture, $15 cocktails or are a WSU fan, this is probably not the bar for you. That being said, this is your quintessential College dive bar. Beer is cheap, pizza is surprisingly tasty, and the bartenders are nice and engaging. Great place to catch a UW game.
