A Pair of French Landmarks Reopen in Winnetka and Eight More Openings - Eater Chicago

"The first Illinois franchise of the popular chain Duck Donuts has opened in suburban Libertyville, the Tribune reports. Known for serving doughnuts fried to order, Duck Donuts originated in North Carolina and spread throughout the country. The local franchise owners were captivated during a vacation in Naples, Florida, and resolved to open one nearby so they could have the doughnuts all the time. Duck Donuts Libertyville, 111 School Street, Libertyville, Open 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday." - Naomi Waxman

The overall experience was great! I loved the amount of options and the fact that the donuts are made to order. Love the flavors and my favorite donut: coconut bliss. I love the crunch, the chocolate, and the delicious coconut. But if you’re going for a more basic frosting, GET THE STRAWBERRY FROSTING. That frosting is addictive and delicious. The staff was a bit dry but maybe I caught them on an off day. Oh and because they fry on the spot, the inside gets pretty warm.

Google
Freshly made donuts! They also have coffees, ice cream and breakfast sandwiches! Parking on the street and lot.

My daughter has severe allergies to several things and let them know. And was I shocked at the level of seriousness they took of this matter! The opened up a different prep table, all fresh ingredients, wiped down, they stuck to the table to avoid cross contamination!!! I will definitely be back and have my business forever ♥️

Really had high hopes for $250 a donut. These were made sloppily in the box. They decorated them straight out of the oven all the toppings slid off and stuck to the bottom of the box. I tried both heating for 10 seconds and at room temperature with same results. I ordered a dozen total the other box with specialty toppings. I drove 30 min for these won’t be back. All mushy. Tip maybe line the box with wax paper so they do not stick.

Google
Quality delicious artistically made to order Donuts! Never had a real donut until you have tried one made fresh for you! Bought these for my dad's birthday and they impressed us all! I took this photo after eating a dozen of them and rearranging in a smaller box to take home. Their presentation was much better before indulging! I also ordered ahead online and my order was ready waiting on the counter for me to grab and leave when I arrived! Great service!

Google
These guys reinvented the donut! I've never had such warm and fresh donuts and I've never had such a crazy selection as to where it took me a while to figure out which ones not to get in my dozen because there were so many choices. I probably could have brought home two dozen. And they are so incredibly good-tasting it's not even funny.

Google
Upon walking in I noticed how dirty this location was, it was very early in the morning so I fell like it should be clean. The staff seemed annoyed to be working and were not friendly. I wasn’t aware prior to going in the donuts were made to order so it a long time to get my donuts. The bottom of the box was dirty. There was frosting on my car seats. Tried brushing it off but of course it could not be that easy. Because they made the donuts in the box the frosting melts and makes the donuts stick to the box making it difficult to pull them off the box and they end up breaking. On the plus side they tasted alright and looked ok This place is NOT worth it!

Google
The donuts are always made fresh! This is so rare for a donut shop, and it really makes all the difference in the world. They have so many unique and incredible flavors. The staff is also very kind and helpful. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Donuts were pretty good, nice and warm made to order. We waited about 30 minutes from the time we entered till we received our donuts. It would have been longer as orders were getting placed ahead of ours but the person making them saw us waiting. I would maybe come here again if I was in the area but I won't seek it out.

Yelp
Good service and the chocolate raspberry donut was too die for. So many great choices it was hard to decide.

Yelp
Oh boy - what a fun experience this place is! There are so many options for toppings/combinations; but once you sort out your order, there are windows and a ledge to be able to watch your donuts be assembled. So fun for kids and adults alike. The donuts come out hot and fresh, ready to be eaten!! All of the flavor combinations utilize the same donut base, but the variety of toppings make each donut unique. Not much space to sit inside and eat, but there is a nice patio for when the weather is nice.
google avatar

Tiffany T.

Yelp
The donuts were undercooked and doughy. It also seems like the toppings were put on too quickly as they melted all over the box. I think the donuts have potential if executed properly.
google avatar

Karyn M.

Yelp
What the Duck Donuts are made hot and fresh to order with many toppings and flavors. A gimmick, sure, but you can order just one donut if you want, and they'll add your topping. There's something about a hot, just fried donut that is unbeatable in its simplicity and taste that is just as good as one of the fancy donuts. I just wanted a cinnamon sugar donut, basic I know, and it went great with my coffee. You can also order an ice cream donut, coffee drinks and shakes. This is fun to stop in for a treat, or watch your donuts being made through the window.

Sheila E.

Yelp
Not impressed with the donuts. Very pricey. It's just not my kind of donut shop. Sorry!

Yelp
Finally got to try duck donuts!! I was excited about it when it opened, and never got a chance to check it out. There are a variety of flavors to choose, all made fresh. I like that you have the option of ordering however many you like. My sister and I placed our order for a s'mores donut and a coffee cake donut and they came out fresh about 5 minutes later. My s'mores donut was good, but too sweet for my liking. I was happy to try this, but it not something I'd be interested in coming back to. It is not my favorite donut ever, but fun to try.

Mike A.

Yelp
Ordered donuts and they got mad...so I hope these live up to the hype. We are sorry we just wanted to try it!

Yelp
Great service, donuts served hot and made to order- still delicious the next day. Couple of small tables inside and many tables outside - great for nice weather. Wheelchair accessible, go in the door to the right of their front door- at first I thought it was not accessible. I usually like glazed raised donuts- but these were fantastic!

Yelp
This is a newish gourmet donut shop a bit hidden but very close to downtown Libertyville. There are a TON of options to choose from and it was difficult to decide. I think it's a great place to take kids for a weekend treat. There is also a nice patio outside to enjoy a donut on warmer days, which is shared with the Wicked Egg restaurant. There are more classic donuts along with more deluxe options with interesting toppings. The staff here are very friendly and made recommendations. I got a blueberry one, and it was so hot and fresh that the icing melted. I liked the fruity flavor overall but it was a bit too sweet and was a little pricier than most other places I've seen. Also wasn't a fan of the aftertaste.
google avatar

Yelp
Worth the hype.. Worth the wait!! Kids loved it!! The donuts are freshly made, so delicious!! Their outdoor seating is really nice and spacious. A must go for all the donut lovers!!

Yelp
I first discovered DD out in the Carolinas in 2022. I was out there for a music festival with some friends and ordered them as a surprise. We absolutely loved them and I was thrilled to discover this location upon arriving home. This was the first time since that trip that I'd actually had an opportunity to try them and I was not disappointed. The unlimited or seemingly unlimited number of combinations that you can create is wonderful! They definitely have something for everybody! They do offer Savory sandwich options if you don't have a sweet tooth, but they're definitely hard to resist. You also have an option to add a random rubber ducky to your order and they nailed it on the head with the one that they sent for me! Whether you're in the area or a little bit far away they're definitely worth the drive or the price of your Uber Eats order! So DUCKING good!

Yelp
I finally had the chance to try Duck Donuts after hearing about them for a few months. I chose to do an online order, as I am ALL about convenience, and I appreciated the fact that there are so many customizable options and the online ordering process is a breeze!! I chose my own flavors, and ordered 2 dozen donuts for an event. Everyone loved the donuts and raved about the unique combos. Reasonably priced as well. DD's has a parking lot so no need to search for nearby parking, which we ALL know can be a headache on the weekends in downtown Libertyville. They also have a patio for warmer months, which I fully intend on taking advantage of soon!

Yelp
This was a fun donut experience. The donuts are made fresh in front of you. It was fun to look through all the flavors and for the most part they were all delicious. They didn't warm up great the next day, so I'd definitely suggest finishing what you order right then and there. Our drinks took a bit of extra time to get ready. I would come back again sometime.
google avatar

Yelp
Great counter service. My grandson loved watching the doughnuts being made. Hard to describe how great the freshly made to order doughnuts tasted! The inside was nice and it was easy to watch your doughnuts being made. The restaurant also offered outdoor seating for warmer weather days.

Sara B.

Yelp
Delicious donuts. Great service. A bit of a wait because they make them all when you order them but it's worth it!
google avatar

Julie O.

Yelp
It's worth the wait in line for hot, fresh and astute donuts. They are so good! Great addition to the area.

Helen G.

Yelp
Impressed my pickiest donut eater. Made to order, warm, good even when cold and also owned by an Army Captain in the reserves. Many innovative creations are available but the donuts with basic toppings are just as tasty!!
google avatar

Sydney B.

Yelp
Got the strawberry shortcake and peanut butter Oreo one and both were so good! Lots of frosting if you're into that. Plenty of flavors to choose from and you can watch it be made. Staff was very friendly and helpful when I asked for suggestions. Donuts come out warm and fresh. Right around the corner from the downtown strip! Street parking and there's also a lot next to it.
google avatar

Rick C.

Yelp
If you want to make a great impression with someone who likes donuts, or little kids, or little kids, who like donuts, and go to duck donuts! You order your donut, and then they make it while you watch it being made. I mean the icing goes on after you watch it being cooked! do I need to say anything else?

Kenneth T.

Yelp
Stopped going when the removed our reward and appears much of the staff Does know how to correct it. Will return when they get a better trained Staff.

Yelp
Breaking with tradition on Fat Tuesday, I decided a Paczki wouldn't do for breakfast! Today, it's donuts... Duck, North Carolina-style. Super-fresh, warm and topped, generously, with the best ingredients! If only the peanuts and bacon stayed where they were supposed to! Hahaha! Bacon does make everything better. The Blueberry-lemonade was the best! Or was it the Oreo Chocolate Explosion? All were fresh, warm and made with love ! I need to go back and try some others as the selection is pretty large. The staff was doing some register training, stopped to welcome me and gave me, a first-time visitor, some great customer service! Explaining the history and lore of the founding of Duck Donuts, and walking me through the app/rewards program, the staff did a great job. Kudos to the manager--she's training her staff right! And with a great product like these fresh donuts, Libertyville should stop in and stop in regularly, for coffee and the freshest donuts in town!

Yelp
I arrived early to beat a rush but there was already a rush, which only means the donuts are wonderful! The staff behind the counters where you can enthusiastically watch them make each donut move as quickly as possible while not moving too quickly to mess up the sweetness that will soon hit your tastebuds. I honestly thought 1/2 dozen would be enough but like so many other things, the idea of "I wish I would have got more" hit my head when I arrived home. Duck Donuts is our new donut spot moving forward. I enjoyed all of them ( see photo of my selection) but the blue berry pancake was my favorite.
google avatar

Yelp
A coworker of mine brought in some of these donuts. From from appearances only, I do have to say that I was underwhelmed, and was not expecting much. It was revealed to me however that these were made to order and the icing was melting due to the freshness. These donuts are so good, perfect for any cake donut lover out there and while they were fresh, they just melted in my mouth. I would definitely recommend stopping by and making either yours or your coworkers days. Everything on the menu looks appealing, so I'm definitely going to be stopping here in the future.

Yelp
I finally got the chance to check out this place. My sister-in-law has been raving about it for months. I'm not a fan of donuts. So I looked at the website t o see if anything peaked my interest. There were so many varieties. The pina colada is what drew me in. I dragged my Son, DiL and grandkids with me. We ordered a 1/2 dz and regretted not ordering a full dz. The donuts were fresh, warm and so tasty. I didn't want to share my pina colada. I also tried the maple bacon. It was sooo good. It's located on a Libertyville. If you been to the downtown area you know that parking is limited. They do have a parking lot in the back and a few tables to sit down and enjoy a sweet treat. The staff was nice. Oh and there's a stepping ledge for kids (or vertically challenged individuals) to view how these tasty morsels are made. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Best donuts I've ever tried So good Customizable Just the way you want them We've got the combo with coffee

Yelp
I love this place!!! I go every month because the maple & bacon donut is literally the best donut I've ever had, honestly. They always have the best assortments and I love that it is made fresh for every order so the donuts are not just surround around. Perfect location surround by a lot of other restaurants in downtown libertyville. It's small in there but they have a nice patio outside that you can sit and enjoy! Every time I've went, they are always very sweet.
google avatar

Yelp
Went today for the first time... wow these donuts are fresh and delicious!! They were made right away and the girl who frosted each one carefully- asked us if they looked okay before she put the lid on... she was so sweet. I can't wait to go back and try more seasonal flavors!

Yelp
Finally, a Duck Donuts in Chicagoland area. I have been wanting to try their donuts when I was in Atlanta earlier this year but didn't get a chance. So, when I was informed that a Duck Donuts shop was opening in Libertyville, I was excited to check them out. I went here with my six year old on a Saturday afternoon after lunch hours in the hope that it wouldn't be busy. But it indeed was busy with the line almost out the door. The good thing about the line was that it was quick moving and also, it gave me enough time to decide what donuts I wanted from the wonderful variety they have. The donuts here are the gourmet kind. Meaning after the basic donuts are cooked, they get dolled up with the different icing and toppings they have to offer. The donuts size is the same and are prepared fresh. I ordered four donuts and a medium cappuccino. One was chocolate glaze with sprinkles, next was Bacon in the Sun, then Pina Colada and last but not least, Coconut Island Bliss. Of these, I had the Coconut Island Bliss and the Pina Colada one and the cappuccino. All of these were delicious and I liked their taste. The Coconut Island Bliss (chocolate icing with peanuts and shredded coconut) was my favorite. The donut was soft and the flavors of chocolate, peanuts and coconut came together to make for a good tasting donut. The Pina Colada (lemon icing and shredded coconut) was nice but am not sure why lemon icing and calling it Pina Colada? I suppose I could have asked. The cappuccino was delicious as well and definitely have it again. I had a good experience here. The donuts are a bit pricey ($2.25 a piece) but that's no bad given the type of donuts they sell and the popular chain that it is and in comparison to other gourmet or fancy donut shops, it's definitely not bad. Although, one thing I would like to mention is that the donuts are all the same one size and they aren't big but more or less a standard size of a regular Dunkin Donut (maybe a bit smaller?). Anyway, the donuts tasted good. I felt like I got my money's worth. I'll certainly be going back here for more. Check this place out if you are into good tasting gourmet donuts and more.

Yelp
my family had ordered multiple times and always amazed with the donuts we got! aswell as the amazing milkshakes duck donuts makes, my favorites gotta be cookies and creme! Every box we got was served with a smile! And the atmosphere was amazing! The best workers at duck donuts lake Zurich.

Yelp
This is a new addition to Libertyville and I have already visited quite a few times. So delicious and flavorful I can't get enough of their donuts. It's a busy environment and our first visit the wait was quite long, but the second visit was quick and easy. Personally would not recommend the lattes, not too flavorful. I have yet to try the milkshakes. My favorite part is that the donuts are made fresh. You can also design any flavor combo you'd like. Definitely check this spot out.
google avatar

Dan S.

Yelp
Really good donut spot. It's kid friendly. Our kids loved watching them make and ice the donuts. I do wish they made long John's. Those are my favorite. Friendly staff. The shop is located it a nice downtown Libertyville area.
google avatar

JR A.

Yelp
Very good donuts. It's nice that they are made fresh to order so you know that the donuts your buying aren't a few hours old sitting on a shelf. They have a wide variety of set flavors or you can create your own. My daughter and I love the maple bacon. The one with caramel drizzle was too sweet for me. Also please know until they're grand opening (sometime in June) they open at 8am everyday, not the 6:30am it's listed on their site.
google avatar

Lexi N.

Yelp
Probably the best donuts I've ever had. They really melt in your mouth. We tried several. Some flavors were spectacular and others just good but all of the donuts were melt in your mouth. I will return and highly recommend it.

Yelp
I remember when Illinois was donut obsessed. There was a new gourmet donut place on every corner in Chicago for a bit there I swear. And don't get me wrong, I was all for it. Most of those places however, didn't live up to the hype. THIS place is everything those places promised to be. Fresh made donuts, freshly dipped, drizzled, and topped. Ready in minutes, devoured in seconds. You can watch them make these delicious donuts through a big glass window, which also has a little raised platform for small kids to use (a great option for families). Staff was friendly and the place was clean. At about 2 bucks a donut this place is a great value for the quality your getting, most places can't even serve up a warm donut let alone fresh made. The peanut butter and jelly was my favorite of the ones I tried, but honestly I don't think you could go wrong with any choice. You can even design your own if nothing suits your tastes. They also offer coffee, shakes, breakfast sandwiches, and ice cram sundaes. Can't wait to come back for more! Side note- they're open till 4 pm which is great for those of us who aren't "morning people"
google avatar

Stacey W.

Yelp
A different donut concept here in Libertyville. They have a vast menu of donuts to chose from. Once you order, the donuts that are coming off the conveyor belt are then frosted and decorated based on what you ordered. The donuts were good even after sitting for awhile, I did not eat them right away. The downside to the way their donuts are made is that the hot donuts off the press melt the frosting and so when you go to eat them most of the frosting is melted on the bottom of the box. Maybe let the donuts cool off a bit before decorating them right away.

Todd G.

Yelp
First time going here, wasn't impressed. The store needs a good deep clean for one. As a former chef, the fryer oil was on its last leg and the donuts tasted like it. The staff seemed ok, not overly friendly, it was like they were afraid to talk to people. To be honest, the boxed donuts at Kwik Trips in Wisconsin are much better and a heck of a lot cheaper.
google avatar

Dennis R.

Yelp
My parents bought 6 donuts at $2.50 a piece today and while they were good there were problems. 1. As you can see in my picture, they don't include wax paper or anything between the donuts and the box so they stick to the bottom and get torn up when you pick them up. The box also collapses on the sides so without paper they stick to the sides as well. I can't imagine giving these as they looked pretty bad. 2. The employees were a bit slow making the donuts and by the time they sprinkled on the crushed peanuts a lot of them didn't stick because the chocolate was drying. 3. Not that it impacted our order, but apparently a lot of the donuts were falling apart and the employees tossed them out. They offer free samples, why not put out the ones that were going to the trash? Maybe that would mean too many free samples. They donuts seem really delecate which may be why they were difficult to handle.

Dan S.

Yelp
This place is amazing!!! Best donut shop in the area! My kids love this place. Nothing like ordering your donuts and watching them make it fresh on the spot!! Delicious. Donuts always obviously super fresh and yummy. Have a few tables inside to eat, as well as some tables on the outside patio. If you're looking for fresh delicious donuts, this is your place. Highly recommend.

Axel C.

Yelp
the person working the day before thanksgiving did a FLAWLESS job. the donuts were absolutely beautiful and tasted amazing. when i complimented the person making the donuts on their skills, they said they loved my hoodie. not only that, but the store smelled like heave. 5 stars.

Yelp
Hello, it's unfortunate for my message, but on 7/1/24 at 8:05 a.m., I came to purchase donuts. When I walked in, I went to look at the donut fryer because I always like to see them being cooked. As I looked, I could see that there were donuts that had already been made at the end of the fryer. The donuts did not look like the normal donuts I usually see they were very dark so I looked over at the grease I could see smoke coming from the grease and it was extremely dark as well! So, when it was my turn to place my order, I asked why the donuts appeared that way and what was going on with the grease, because it looked really old. The supervisor/manager (not sure of her name) said that the grease did need to be changed, but the dough was fresh. So, I asked if she was going to change it? Her response was no she didn't have time to change it, but the donuts are perfectly fine. Due to me not wanting to discourage the other 2 customers that were there I said okay, thank you and walked out. So, that I didn't discourage the other customers I called into the donut shop and explained how I was really disappointed that I drove that far and that it's unacceptable to cook any food in old bad grease. She then proceeded to say she added some grease to what was there, that it was a busy weekend, that the schedule to change the grease was every 2days, and that she didn't have time to change the grease that she's down to 1 fryer. I asked how she could add new grease to old grease and that she could get someone sick with the way the grease looked. She proceeded to say that she could make me some donuts in the grease that was there, and I could taste them to see there's nothing wrong with them. I asked her was she serious and if I could speak with the manager? She stated that she was the manager for the day so I asked for the owner, and she just said she would pass on my concerns but didn't take any of my information. The conversation and how the food looked was a bit disturbing, not to mention when I came in there was a gentleman there and his order was being made (drinks, donuts, etc.), but I wasn't greeted nor was I asked if I was ready to place my order, but a woman who came in after me was! The lady that came in after me said I know you were here you can place your order 1st! I am extremely disappointed with my experience at Duck Donuts in Libertyville this go round! I usually don't write reviews, but I tried to give the courtesy of calling and as a manager you shouldn't have a bunch of excuses you should try fixing the problem and my whole thing was how did you start your day off with bad grease knowing the customers can see what you're serving.

Yelp
Finding Duck Donuts in Libertyville made up for not being able to stop at a Duck Donuts in California in 2021. Bottom line: me likey. Hands down, best maple bacon donut I ever had, probably because the bacon was leaner. Fatty bacon on a donut is awful. Dinged one star because I'm a cheapskate and generally don't want to spend $2 a donut for a dozen. As to previous complaints about the staff being unfriendly, I did not experience this on my visit, they were all very friendly and helpful. I will definitely be back when I'm in the area!
google avatar

Cory K.

Yelp
The wait is worth it. Although the price is a bit much for a donut, they are filling and unique. The donuts are fresh, warm, and tasty... that is worth it. They make homemade shakes that you will enjoy. Seating is extremely limited so be prepared to take and go. It is a cool experience for the kids, a couple of times, but after a going it loses the fun component and just the freshness keeps you going back.

Dawn B.

Yelp
these are so fresh and taste delicious! I will definitely be ordering from them again! price is in line with other places and worth the price. Great doughnuts
google avatar

sarah t.

Yelp
Oh my goodness! These are awesome!!!! Best donuts I've ever had. Made fresh while you wait. $12.50 for a half dozen but they are worth every penny. The staff is very friendly also. I would highly recommend this place.

Yelp
My introduction to Duck Donuts was a pumpkin spice one my boyfriend brought home (so not even fresh off the line) and it was so good, we had to make a trip so I could get one in person. Parking was a little tricky to find, but thankfully it wasn't a long wait once we got inside. There are tons of toppings to choose from, and if you bring kiddos there is a glass window to watch the assembly line. It looked like they're all the same delicious base donut, but there are tons of different and interesting flavor variations. I decided to get a seasonal fall flavor - apple streusel which was delicious but very messy. (Essentially just a scoop of apple pie filling in the middle of a donut with a hole....) I also tried the peanut butter & jelly which was interesting but maybe not my favorite.

Yelp
I was in Grayslake visiting family and my son picked up the Fall Assortment of donuts from Duck Donuts. [Insert George Takei saying "Oh Myyyy] I don't have enough adjectives to describe how good these donuts were. Freshly made, still warm when he brought them home and just f*cking fantastic! We cut all the donuts in pieces so we could all try each flavor and I still don't have a favorite. I would have to say they are all my favorite. Every single one was just melt-in-your-mouth-deliciousness! As I don't live in Illinois, I had to Google Duck Donuts for the closest location to my house in Arizona. I was delighted to find a location under 2 hours away, so I'm definitely marking it down for a short road trip!

Yelp
The night before I wanted to grab donuts, I placed an order for pickup at 7:15 AM, the earliest time possible on the site. I arrived a few minutes early, and I saw only two customers sitting and waiting for orders. My donuts were not even started until about 7:25, and they weren't ready until 7:29. Because of that, I was late to work. When I called the next day to ask if that lateness was normal, I was told it wasn't but that I could get a refund (the other option of getting credit didn't appeal because I might have the same issue). My name and number were taken down because the person who could issue a refund wouldn't be in for another hour. Ten days have passed, and I have not been contacted.
