"Dudley Cafe has been a go-to spot for morning coffee and breakfast sandwiches in Nubian Square for nearly a decade. Sandwich and bowl names pay homage to local history, like the Roxbury Deluxe breakfast sandwich featuring egg, spinach, bacon, cheddar, and jam on an English muffin, and Ayanna’s Bowl, a savory nod to Representative Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts. Community is also at the core of this cafe, where they showcase local artists and hire staffers from the nearby Madison Park Technical High School." - Nathan Tavares

"Head to Dudley Cafe, which functions as both a restaurant and a creative community center that hosts events and showcases work from a rotating roster of local artists, for the Roxbury’s Deluxe: bacon, egg, cheddar, sauteed spinach, and seasonal fruit jam on an English muffin. Meanwhile, the second location opened in Cambridge in July 2023, where you can find a breakfast sandwich with an egg topped with a spicy sauce plus spinach and your choice of cheese on a bulkie roll." - Nathan Tavares, Eater Staff

"Dudley Cafe is the platonic ideal of a sunny little cafe: comfy chairs, warm service, and enough space to linger for hours. The menu includes a jammy breakfast sandwich served all day, hot and cold lunch sandwiches, and rice bowls heaping with colorful veggies and tangy sauces. The owners are the same folks behind Shanti, a mini-chain of Indian restaurants in Boston." - Erika Adams

"Dudley Cafe has very good coffee, but it’s more than just a coffee shop. It also provides internships and employment opportunities to the neighborhood’s youth — the cafe has a partnership with Madison Park Technical High School and hires students for baking and front-of-house jobs. Go for breakfast and get the Roxbury Deluxe, which is a breakfast sandwich with sauteed spinach, egg, bacon, cheddar cheese, and seasonal jam, served on an English muffin." - Terrence Doyle

Google
bright and cozy café located in the heart of Dudley Square. friendly staff, clean all-gender restroom, and diverse menu. great spot to enjoy a latte and good book or meeting up with friends. check it out!

Antonio C.

Google
Really nice staff but a very mediocre sandwich. I am not sure if I was handed someone else’s order but I got the new edition that was pretty much just sweet potato in toasted bread, it was missing all the other ingredients.

Google
My friends and I enjoyed a tasty brunch here last week. We walked into the space and were immediately greeted with the smell of bacon...yum yum yum! The space was clean and Covid safe protocols were be followed by everyone! They have cozy sitting chairs if you want to sit for a short bit. The artwork is also amazing! I will definitely be back to try some of the the lunch menu items.

Google
I grabbed a quick drink here to take a call. I got the Kashmiri chai which was very flavorful (as expected of a chai) and a vibrant, light pink hue. It looks very Instagram worthy and has great taste to boot! (Sadly no photos because I was so thirsty)

Google
The house coffee and the americano were good. I liked the Roxbury deluxe, but I won't say it's unpassable.

Google
This cafe has my very favorite iced coffee and it's just as good late in the day as it is in the morning. Also, they sell an incredible bean pie in the cooler. It's a sweet pie and it's delicious. Good for sharing with a couple of friends, great with coffee.

Google

Yelp
Service: quick and friendly - you can tell there's the local regulars and they accomodate to everyone equally. Food: delicious, fresh, and some are even hearty enough to share or take some home (like their bowls). Ambiance: music playing, if crowded there's often the hustle and bustle of people grabbing lunch or chatting but outdoor spots also allow for enjoying the weather while having a yummy lunch!

Deborah C.

Yelp
Came by for the first time for a quick lunch and enjoyed my experience. The space is bright with a variety of seating options. There were people working on laptops as well as just enjoying their food. I got the Ayanna Bowl and an iced chai latte. Both were made right away. I really enjoyed the flavors of the bowl and the chai had the right balance of spices and sweetness. I would definitely come back if I'm in the area!

Ellie B.

Yelp
Everything I've ordered here has been absolutely delicious. I've had three different kinds of bowls and a few of the lemonade drinks. My favorite was the purple lemonade in honor of prince! Food is very healthy and well prepared. The café can be loud, but it's fantastic and a really convenient location.

Yelp
Although I haven't visited Dudley Cafe as a customer yet, I did visit after ordering one of their Surprise Bags on Too Good To Go! The cost of the bag was $5, with a pickup window between 2 and 3pm on a weekday. I seemingly surprised the worker at the counter by showing up at the beginning of the pickup window. They said people usually come closer to 3, so I'll try that next time to see if my experience is different. Despite the confusion, I was given a bag with an apple scone and a Greek salad. On their own, these seemed reasonably priced for the quality. The scone was a bit dry (to be expected) but otherwise very tasty. The Greek salad featured fresh vegetables and a great dressing, yum! There were only a few people in there when I visited, so I'm not sure that it gets very busy. It seems like a great, calm cafe to come grab a bite to eat alone or with a friend. Looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
What a great surprise! The breakfast sandwich had the right amount of heat, with my added bacon of course. Amazing. I don't even like sandwiches, and I ate this whole thing up, believe that! The iced coffee, great! Really a delightful surprise, and will be sure to add in my bookmarks for my future Boston trips. Super affordable too, which is another great treat since everything is so marked up now these days. I would love to try the other things in the menu. My sister said her turkey sandwich was also delicious.

Annel O.

Yelp
This was my second time coming in for breakfast. I was pleased with the taste and quality of the food both times. Their breakfast sandwich with the house sauce was Devine.

Alex P.

Yelp
ordered a belt and Nubian and there was hair in my sandwich....threw it away before could take a photo as I've never left a yelp review before but this is absolutely ridiculous and disgusting. I'm absolutely sickened. I've eaten street food in pakistan, China, India, and have never had this happen before, and let me just say if you know what I mean, that says A LOT. don't eat here.!!!!

Francis L.

Yelp
I went to order lunch today. The cashier sees me and proceeds to continue cleaning the toaster. The guy at the sandwich station gets her attention and tells here there is a customer waiting. Her response was: "I am not blind" but continues to clean the toaster, counter, utensils, etc. making a point that I should wait for her to decide to walk over and take my order. I walked away without ordering and will never go back.

M C.

Yelp
Ordered a breakfast sandwich and it was delicious. Loved that it was pressed. I also ordered a mocha coffee, and a Caesar wrap for lunch that I haven't tried yet but I'm sure I won't be disappointed. Thank you!

Lauren J.

Yelp
Stopped by the new Cambridge location this morning and wow! So impressed, already excited to go back. That stretch of Mass Ave has been lacking a good (locally-owned) cafe for a while (the one by Linnaean isn't my favorite, sorry!). We tried the breakfast sandwiches and a couple iced teas (sweet tea and the purple rain) and both were fantastic. The sandwiches were so well-seasoned, just the right level of spicy, and, call me crazy, they were BEAUTIFUL! Shiny, golden brown, toasted brioche with perfect griddle lines. This one definitely makes my top five bfast sandwiches, a ranking I don't take lightly The two workers were also super nice. I hope regular Starbucks customers will see Dudley Cafe right across the street and give it a chance - hoping this place becomes a neighborhood staple.

M M.

Yelp
I used to like this place. Not only have the prices gone through the roof, but the food has gotten worse as well. I got a breakfast sandwich that was too spicy to eat, my favorite "bowl" was replaced with a subpar less flavorful option, the Madison Park sandwich I used to love is now flavorless. I don't know if they changed owners, chef, or they decided to cut costs so much that their food is no longer edible. I don't have a reason to go there any more. I will just go across to Marios from now on.

Loïs V.

Yelp
This is such a cozy spot! I like the variety in the menu and the service is always great!

Kristine A.

Yelp
OMG, so many baked good to choose from & so damn tasty!! Woohoo for pumpkin muffins & toffee cookies. I ended up getting a sandwich called New Edition as well & it was so damn good. The names are pretty interesting & done w/ serious thought. So great there are veg*n options. Yes you need to go here, like now.

Teresa Y.

Yelp
I desperately needed coffee after a long drive from NY to Boston to support a friend in need. Not enough sleep and leaving at 6:30am meant coffee...now! Dudley Cafe made the perfect iced coffee as well as some yummy toast with homemade strawberry jam (more liquid yet very tasty). My friends who were with me had a rice curry bowl which looked and smelled heavenly and the portion was so generous. Every one of their bowls are named after remarkable women of color. I suggested a bowl named after Viola Davis because, well, she's my hero! Even though I grew up in the Boston area, I must confess I never visited this part of Boston. It's a remarkable place of history with homes that are just gorgeous and a diversity that is exhibited in each human being I walked by. I can't wait to visit again!

Courtney R.

Yelp
Fantastic food, amazing staff! Baked good are fabulous. Highly recommend! Close to everything in the square

DodiB B.

Yelp
Stipe here for the first time, ordered a brioche breakfast sandwich. Turkey sausage, egg and spinach, comes with spicy sauce but I asked for it on the side. Resonantly priced. The interior design is artistic, roomy and welcoming. Definitely a spot to chill for a burrito, bowl air sandwiches.

Jessica P.

Yelp
Omg!! Get the Pacman sandwich. Really you'll need two if you're hungry or an adult.:) that's the only negative size. I inhaled this sandwich. So much that i only took the picture at the halfway point. Great flavor. Tastes like a pulled pork southern sandwich made with love.

Joanie L.

Yelp
Great place to come on an 8 degree day with all the bright sunshine and warm service. Good food and comfy spot. Worth riding the bus to.

Britany C.

Yelp
This business is good but the everyone seems to lack energy and work ethics the coffee makers, there's a lady with glasses who is rude and terrible at making coffee! And I'm a regular!

Herline H.

Yelp
I went there for brunch and it was really cute! There is an area where you can eat outside and enjoy the sun. The inside was nice, open, and inviting. They even had a live music inside. The atmosphere is super chill and their egg sandwiches are. I would definitely recommend those. After you order, you can grab a seat and they will call your name. The owner called my name wrong and my friends laughed and he was super embarrassed and insisted on knowing the correct prononciation. I thought that was super nice! Definitely check it out!

Chantel J.

Yelp
Good place. They have a brunch special that is 10 bucks and you add a mimosa for I think 2-3 bucks more! It comes with french toast, quiche, fruit and bacon. Very filling, came in a cute little bento box. It was actually really good, and so filling. The quiche was actually really good not dry at all, it was vegetarian. The bacon was crispy and delicious as bacon should be. Also, they offer a vegetarian bento brunch too! They only serve beer and wine but for the food options it's great! Make sure to get there early, once they run out of food that's it. i'm definitely coming back to try lunch!

Eunice I.

Yelp
Very cute little cafe in the Roxbury Dudley neighborhood. On Saturday mornings, there is usually live music playing. WiFi is good and they even offer to print materials for you (although I've never used this service before). Also, good bakery selection. Just tried the lemon poppyseed muffin today and surprised myself by really enjoying it. Lastly, I'm not sure if this is true but the few times I've went, I have been able to find a table to do work unlike other places I've gone to trying to get work done during high traffic times

Lucinda A.

Yelp
This was my first time here and it will not be the last. I went during rush hour but they moved fairly quickly. It's a fun vibe with beautiful art displayed. The customer service was great and the workers were very friendly. The food was phenomenal I highly recommend you trying it if you're in that area. I had the haddock with salsa, rice and peas. Only downfall was that their was not much seating. Customer service: 5 Food: 5

Cody C.

Yelp
Horrible service... I ordered on their screen as it is suggested.. but didn't receive my order and asked them to make it since I paid for it but only got push back and them not believing I ordered. Not only with my experience but the way they treated others as well... blank faces and no character, it felt like I was in a cafe run by robots. Also the prices are way to high for the food and subsequent service. I do not suggest going there unless you're desperate for coffee...

Yelp
(1) Cost/Value: Purchased an oatmeal with banana and walnuts for $5.75 and it was enough food for a five year old. Was less than 1 cups worth of cooked oatmeal. Even Starbucks is cheaper. (2) Mold: Purchased a Caprese sandwich around 8am. Admittedly was not able to refrigerate it between then and noon when I ate it. However, there was some mold on the mozzarella - which of course I discovered after having eaten more than half the sandwich (I was very hungry as the oatmeal was so tiny). (3) Service: I was waiting outside in the freezing cold at 6:50am while I watched an employee inside do something on her phone. I understand they don't open until 7am but would it really have been so hard to let me wait inside and just tell me not to order until 7?

Andy C.

Yelp
You ever watch Insecure? Issa Rae would be all here tryna find the man of her dreams while eating their fire Yogurt bowl with fresh fruits and grains. It's got a comfortable vibe where you can get great conversation and comfort food that may or may not contradict your diet goals. But they have healthy options too. This isn't a ya problem, it's more of a you problem Either way the vibe is great.

James G.

Yelp
A pleasant artistic code house cafe with good food. I ordered the Arya's Bowl with was excellent. I love curry and it was well done with a generous portion. All my food appeared fresh, and the bowl was prepared within view of the register. There were a few pre-made items in a case for quick take out. The cafe is modern, clean, with soft music. The bathrooms were very clean, and the staff was helpful, polite, knowledgable, and understanding of a new customer. I would definitely return if in the area.

Carolyn Z.

Yelp
Really great study vibe for the Roxbury area! Definitely exceeded my expectations.

Colleen F.

Yelp
I love this spot! I've been here a handful of times and usually get some type of bowl. The tilapia bowl (I'm forgetting the actual name) is pretty tasty. I like the seating, it's comfortable and there is a lot of natural light. The employees are always warm and always nice to me when I come in. I really love Dudley Cafe's commitment to social justice and being a central location for organizers to host events. Overall a thumbs up and a staple whenever I'm in the area.

Plur F.

Yelp
Everything about Dudley Street Cafe is correct. The beautiful artwork, the diverse menu, the amazing Jazz band for Brunch and the great service and atmosphere in general. The "Roxbury" was the best thing I've encountered on an English muffin, like ever! Literally could not stop saying how delicious this meal was...I will be back and I come from NyC so that's saying a lot. This was much needed in the neighborhood!

David H.

Yelp
This was my first time here and it was an overall great experience. Got a sandwich called "The Dudley Favorite". Usually I'm a very basic sandwich kind of person (turkey, bacon, extra cheese, mayo) and at first was nervous about getting a sandwich with things I would never personally add (red peppers, Guacamole, topping other than mayo, etc) but I was pleasantly surprised how flavorful the sandwich was. The chicken was very seasoned well and full of flavor. I added bacon that was thick cut and tasted like it was recently cooked . Great sandwich paired with chips and drink. My only concern was that the person making my sandwich didn't change their gloves between making other orders. At one point I saw them wash their hands with the gloves on . I felt myself about to say something but then just said, "don't be that guy today". Not that I felt they weren't being clean, just saying... Also be sure to look up above the line because they have a burrito and taco menu in addition to their main menu. I only realized this after placing my order. Not a big deal, but I may have ordered a burrito if I had saw it. Don't let my small observations stop you from trying this place. It was well worth it!

Shen L.

Yelp
They made my mocha with chocolate syrup AND chocolate milk which is amazing! So much chocolately goodness - this is how every coffee shop should make a mocha!

Lesley W.

Yelp
Came for trivia night and decided to grab a bite. The "curry" chickpea bowl was hot - temperature wise, but not a drop of curry flavor was present. The chef should try this new rare ingredient called CURRY POWDER. The dish actually tasted like canned peas in a jarred sauce. No onion/garlic/carrots. Nothing. and the "Spanish white rice" was overcooked unseasoned plain rice. The cashier said it had vegetables in it. I found 2 peas. My friend had the tilapia bowl and that wasn't any more flavorful. The place is great for coffee and breakfast pastries but the other food is awful!

Israela B.

Yelp
Much love for Dudley Cafe! Lots of breakfast and lunch options including an amazing gluten free blueberry oat loaf full of fresh blueberries, egg and bagel sandwiches and rice bowls. Beverage options a plenty too. Cool vibe, sofas and tables and lots of sunshine. I'm going to dream of that blueberry loaf!

E E.

Yelp
Spacious, well-lit, good amount of tables as well as some comfy chairs. Good place to meet a friend for an afternoon coffee and chat. Had a nice strong macchiato. All the pastries were gone 3 PM; next time hope to snag a cookie or scone.

Nadine S.

Yelp
I want to like this place SO bad. It's right around the corner from my apartment and it's the only decent coffee/lunch spot in the area. It's like a bad relationship though-- I keep going back expecting it to be different and I'm always disappointed to find it's the same old bad stuff. The experience starts off okay when you walk in the door. It's a beautiful space full of bright sunny spots to work and lots of windows...but that's about where it ends. The coffee is fine. Nothing to write home about but I'm also not one to complain too much about coffee. Stay away from the food. It's not fresh. I've tried quite a few things from their menu: the breakfast sandwiches, quesadilla, rice bowls...all bad. Not just meh-- actually bad. I thought I could be saved with the bakery items and got a spinach cheese croissant that I asked to have warmed up and they couldn't even do that. When I got my croissant back it was cold in the middle. How hard is it to throw something in the microwave? They seem to do that pretty well with the rest of their food. I truly don't understand how this place is still in operation with the garbage they're passing off as edibles. This place is pretty much good for just one thing: a nice place to sit and work for a little while.

Karen C.

Yelp
This is primarily for their pastries-great muffins and LOVE their cookies! They are huge! Crispy chocolatey---YUMMEEE!

Khadar A.

Yelp
This cafe has a great ambiance and good food. I am not giving them a perfect rating for 2 reasons. Reason 1-- The people at the front will not ask you for your preferred name after you make an order. The cook will simply yell--loudly and repeatedly--whatever name appears on your credit card. This is obnoxious for people like me who do not go by our "government name." I have spoken to the manager, in a very friendly way, about this issue several weeks ago and despite his promise to look into it, nothing has changed. Reason 2--I am happy that the cafe pays homage to powerful black and brown women by naming all their rice bowl menu items after these women--including Michelle Obama, Malala Yousafzai and Angela Davis. Each of these women has a blurb listing their accomplishments. I am bothered that seven months after the election, Ayanna Presley's blurb has not been updated and she is still listed as a "councilwoman." It would be trivial for this flourishing for-profit cafe to update its menu board to properly reflect the status of this inspirational Black woman, whose name it uses to sell items, but they have not bothered to do this--even after I brought it up to them. This is either laziness or disrespect---and neither is a good look for a business. If these two problems are fixed, I would be happy to rate this as a 5-star cafe.

Ashley B.

Yelp
I wish I still lived in Boston because this place is great! The food was delicious (I got the Ms. Davis bowl) and the space is awesome, with big windows and cool artwork. Will make this a regular stop on future Boston visits :) Edit: just got a bomb cappuccino! Ruined the artwork because I started drinking before I took the pic

Loud M.

Yelp
Breakfast sandwich is litty with the house sauce ----I don't like Gouda so I sub mine with Cheddar. Always see some powerful folks in the building and community members in the same line!

Jori F.

Yelp
Cute local cafe. I came in this morning and got a sesame bagel with avocado and a matcha green tea mint latte. The bagel was good, but the latte tasted less like a latte and more like a cup of milk. Needless to say I don't dumped it after a few sips. Overall nice cafe though.

Tara M.

Yelp
No lie, I ate here every single morning for four days straight during my trip to Boston. I loved everything about this place! A pot of tea with my french toast, lovely. The cinnamon rolls, epic. The breakfast sandwich was delish. The art work BEAUTIFUL! I just wanted to pack this place up and transport it to Atlanta, but those Spirit Airlines baggage fees tho...

Liz O.

Yelp
In between meetings I needed lunch, wi-fi and a tabletop. Dudley Cafe was the perfect solution. Michelle's Bowl (chicken curry dish) was delicious and the staff couldn't be nicer, faster, friendlier. Easy free wi-fi and generous workspace with no guilt even at the height of the lunch hour (not a very busy day here, no fight for space). There was even easy, free street parking. Love the artwork and the floor to ceiling windows for people watching in Dudley Square. Thanks, Dudley Cafe!

Katleho M.

Yelp
I've gotten into the habit of bringing my own mugs & take out containers with me since I've moved here as sustainability & the environment don't appear to be a concern in Boston. I brought my own coffee mug here & they charged me for a large coffee even though my mug is a bit smaller than their large coffee. Way to be greedy & discourage efforts at lowering your global footprint. No other coffee shop I've been to so far has done this except here. Not to mention I'm saving them money on take out cups. I'll stick to Haley House. The atmosphere at Haley is much better as well.

K. H.

Yelp
What a great cafe they have rice bowls, salad, sandwiches, coffee and a bakery I ordered the no.34 sandwich Roast beef, pickled carrots, pickled cucumbers, radish, cilantro with housemade mayonnaise on baguette really good flavor my wife got the pacman Pulled pork, mango chutney, sriracha mayo, cilantro and tomatoes on brioche roll. also very good. Super friendly Service can't wait to try the whole menu Definitely a place I recommend

Matt R.

Yelp
I'm pretty high on this place early on. As a Fort Hill resident I'm happy to have another option I can walk to. I've stopped by three times for coffee but haven't tried any food. The staff is great. The vibe is more Brooklyn than Boston but it's a really comfortable room and they had good music playing. I wish this place was open when I was in school as its where I would have gone to get work done. I judge an iced coffee by whether I can drink it black or if I need to add milk. I can drink this coffee black. I'm very excited to have them here.

Anna B.

Yelp
Horrible coffee, burnt, blunt, one of the worst I've had. Other than that the staff was really friendly and warm but when you go to a CAFE you expect to get at least decent coffee, which is not the case with this one

Zack D.

Yelp
So great to have this place right at Dudley Station! I was curious about the impact of having a place like this open right down the block from Haley House Bakery + Cafe, but both seem to be packed most of the time. A comfortable spot to sit down with a small group or read a book over some coffee or a sandwich. They often have live music, which is great.

Emilia D.

Yelp
Great locally owned cafe. Food is delicious, esp the rice bowls. Good coffee and lovely staff. Popular lunch spot!
