Bakery Extends Hours, Adds Staff to Combat Bread Shortage | Eater San Diego

"Facing a run on bread in grocery stores that has spurred home baking, I report that Dudley’s Bakery, a 57-year-old San Ysabel bakery in eastern San Diego County near Julian, has majorly stepped up production to keep up with demand: it has bumped its hours from five to seven days a week and is hiring (experienced bakers should call (760) 765-0488 or email customerservice@dudleysbakery.com). Supplying bread and a variety of baked goods, including pastries, pies and fruit bars, to its original bake shop and to markets, the bakery has enacted a seniors-only shopping hour from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday through Thursday, is offering discounts to first responders and health care workers, and is encouraging organizations, from nonprofits to senior care facilities, to contact them directly to arrange special orders." - Candice Woo

Great stop on the way into Julian. Indoor and outdoor seating options. Cute trinket/kitchen shop inside. Lots of pastries and baked goods to choose from but I wish they had the option to warm it up. The cinnamon roll was good but not the best I’ve ever had. Also tried the Nutella brioche roll and it was a messy but chocolatey experience. Yum! Arrived around 10am on a Saturday and the bakery was pretty busy with about a 7-10 person line at the ordering counter. Wish we could have tried more baked goods but we didn’t have room. Maybe next time! Parking lot is spacious with many spots.

A definite stop EVERY time I travel through the mountains near San Diego. Been going here since I was a young child. Absolutely unique and delicious breads and pastries. I finally tried the sandwiches last time I went and was not disappointed. If you've never been you need to make time to go.

Google
Dudley’s Famous Bakery and Cafe had a really great variety of baked goods and drinks! I was pleasantly surprised! They have a giant case of baked items and they also have hot food too! I suggest the blueberry danish! A portion of the bakery is also a store with beautiful, unique housewares! They did however lose some stars for the lack of good customer service. I felt like me ordering my breakfast was an inconvenience for them. They were curt and rushed me, even though it was my first time there and I was trying to figure out what I wanted.

Google
This bakery has an impressive variety—cakes, cookies, breads, muffins, and pies galore. While everything looked amazing, the taste was just okay. That said, the environment is cool and welcoming, with very clean bathrooms and enough parking to make it an easy stop. When I went, the line was long but moved surprisingly fast thanks to efficient service. It’s a solid place to stop by if you’re leaving Julian and want to grab a few treats for the road.

Very cute coffee shop on our trip to Anza borrego and glad we stopped by. Honestly we actually stopped by just use a restroom but this was a really good find. Lovely aesthetic on the inside and quite a nice selection of items for purchase as well. The variety of breads they have was unbelievable! Put the bread lover in me really wanted to go all out. The pastry selection was also really lovely. Husband and I got the Pistachio Stuffed Flaky Brioche and it was really delicious even a few hours later. The pistachio cream was smooth and not too sweet either and when really well with the croissant. Sister-In-Law got the Nutella flaky brioche and that definitely did have quite a lot of Nutella inside! Definitely value for money. Friends also got one of the savory pastries and they said the flavor was really nice but it wasn't really crispy.

We have been coming to this bakery for many years. We have typically bought sandwiches on the way to the desert. They are very flavorful, meat filled, and never disappoint. I would recommend getting a classic Italian. This time we grabbed raisin cinnamon bread and a Dutch apple pie. Both were very good. The breads come all pre cut and you must order the day before to get an uncut loaf. We make sure to call in next time for sure. The staff was good about explaining this.

We visited on a Saturday in early January, and the place was packed. Aside from the bread section, they offered a variety of desserts, deli items, honey, accessories, pies, and numerous local products (check out the pictures and videos). We ordered the Italian sandwich and the Bajapotle sandwich, with the latter being my favorite. Sandwich prices range from $11 to $16. We also tried two desserts—a raspberry pastry and a cheese Danish—along with a Crazy Chai Latte and a Raspberry Mocha Latte. The latter felt like hot chocolate. Coffee signatures ranged from $6 to $7, depending on the size. This was my second visit, the first was a few years ago when it was much quieter. The location has both indoor and outdoor seating and plenty of parking. It’s always a great spot for breakfast or lunch before exploring the area!

Google
This place is outrageous! I loved the selections and I ended up getting a vanilla cake with some sort of pumpkin crumble and it didn’t last long in my house. I will be stopping here every time I go through town.

Yelp
A must stop when driving up to Julian. They have delicious pies, jams, olive oil, and their famous bread. Great variety of flavors and good price. I always get the jalapeño cheddar and the raisin date. You can always freeze the bread and grab some slices as you go so the bread does not go bad. They also have coffee and breakfast options and a cool house items to buy. :)

Yelp
We stopped by Dudley's on our way home from Julian to pick up some lunch for the road. After all the old timey shops we had just been to, it was refreshing to find a modern bakery. We bought a few loaves of bread to take home, a tuna sandwich, and jam. The bread is not the best I've ever had, but still good. The tuna sandwich was absolutely delicious, but be forewarned it a little spicy. The women running the cash registers were also so kind. Will be back if I find myself in the area again.

Yelp
If you're heading up to the town of Julian for some apple pies and Fall vibes, you might want to stop by Dudley's bakery for a loaf or two of their bread. We usually pack with us some deli meat, cheese and veggies on our road trip up, pick up a variety of bread at Dudley's and have a picnic somewhere. We have been lucky a few times where there is no line of people, but the weekend before Halloween and most likely, Halloween weekend, you'll hit the crowds. Once inside, you'll find a cafe counter for sandwiches, coffee and pastries. If you want to take some bread home, just grab the ones you want from the rack and head to the counter to pay for it. We like the Sheephearder bread, deli onion rye, Hawaiian, Asiago olive, and Irish potato. There is also a variety of sweet dessert loaves; like apple cinnamon, etc. During the Fall season, you'll find pumpkin pastries, bread and pies. What I love about their bread is that all of the ingredients are locally sourced, no preservatives, and is made with local spring water. Buy four loaves and get the fifth one free. Each loaf is approximately $8.

Yelp
Raisin date but bread! I haven't had this in 30 years! Only waited 10 minutes to be helped - I wasn't looking forward to a long line and was happy to see it short midweek! Probably bc it wasn't a weekend. Yummy bread - next time I'll try other loaves - this time I just wanted a taste of nostalgia - be back sooner for more

Yelp
The bread here is good and I like the Dudleys ginger raisin and molasses fruit bars. The service is always right on schedule and the ambience is always changing and clean and fun. It's great that they're open now seven days a week 730
google avatar

Yelp
We come here at Dudleys mostly for their Pies, their bread and other Pastries were good too. My wife can eat a whole pie here in one sitting by herself; that's how much she likes their pies. We mostly eat here at their place and then buy more pies to go. We always purchase their APPLE PEACH PIE and APPLE MANGO PIE. Both pies were really good, have plenty of fruits inside their pies too, and most of all they are not overly sweet. Staff are friendly, and plenty of parking around.

Yelp
I've been going to Dudley's Bakery since I was a child! I have so many fond memories of weekend day trips to Julian with my parents, and we ALWAYS stopped into Dudley's for a loaf of bread and the most amazing molasses bars. All of these years later, I'm so happy to see their success and expansions, and the product is just as delicious as ever. The service is always lovely, and it's just so cute inside. Highly recommend!

Yelp
There was a long line when we went but totally worth it on the way up to Julian! The spinach feta pastry was my favorite of everything we got. It was savory and buttery, a perfect snack! All of the other pastries were also good, you can't go wrong with any of them. We also got the hot pumpkin chai and the pumpkin mocha which were the perfect fall drinks.

Yelp
I haven't tried the baked goods yet. We stopped here on our way to Julian and decided to come back on our way home and bought baked goods, a Dutch apple pie. When you come to Julian (technically not Julian yet) you gotta get a pie. The pie looks good. And the loaf looks yummy. The cashier did a nice gesture and she was friendly. The place looks inviting, didn't feel like sitting down to eat but the place looked like a good place to bring some baked goods home. Forgot to mention that the price of pie ($20.95) is way cheaper than my regular supermarket.
google avatar

Jia K.

Yelp
Forgot to take photos but this bakery is such a cute spot, with plenty of tables and fresh bread. The staff members were very kind and sweet. We tried the classic club sandwich and an apple cider. The sandwich was amazing, and the apple cider was especially good! I wish I could have some more right now! :)
google avatar

Kaitlyn W.

Yelp
Dudley's is a must stop on the way back from Julian! The sandwiches are huge and so good. The service is quick and friendly. The restaurant also has a lot of cute things to browse as you wait.
google avatar

Sue B.

Yelp
We've been coming to Dudley's for over 30 years. In the old days, I would take orders from friends and family members and come home with 20 loaves of bread to distribute This has always been a very good bakery - for breads, muffins, cookies and pastries. Now, they also have a cute little gift shop. Today, we stopped by and bought a bear claw and a savory spinach pastry. The savory was good, but it almost had too much spinach. We really enjoyed the bear claw with a yummy almond paste and would definitely buy it again. I also purchased a few cute cards. They have clean restrooms, but you'll have to ask for the code to get in.
google avatar

Yelp
Very cute bakery in Julien. Lots of people recommended this place to us during our stay. They have fresh pasteries, made to order coffees and bread and a very cute retail space with housewares, sage, and little gifties. The staff is friendly and accommodating. I definitely recommend!
google avatar

Chesney F.

Yelp
It's the water! Dudley's uses local springwater, but that's not the only magic ingredient. Talent, time tested recipes and great people make this the best bakery around. Love Dudley's!
google avatar

Eliza O.

Yelp
This was the best find for me during our trip to Julian! The bakery has a lot of variety and the food is good! Tried the Bajapotle and it really hit the spot! The toasted jalapeño cheese bread was so good we bought a loaf - and a loaf of Asiago, and a few others. lol. Also tried the brioche with pistachio cream, which was soft and flaky. There was plenty of cream and it was a satisfying sweet treat. There's plenty to look at inside, too - mugs, dishes, soaps, cards, etc. and a fair amount of seating to enjoy your treats. The service was friendly. It did take a while for our sandwich order to be filled, but everything's freshly made, so that could be why - and it was crowded. Lots of people seem to like this place. If you're in Julian, definitely check out Dudley's!
google avatar

Andy P.

Yelp
oh man... what can I say about this pastry/bakery? If you are on the way to Julian, Dudley's is a must! When you walk in, you'll see the wide array of pastry, breads, and other cool items to check out. Mainly, I was there for their bread. Its as good as it gets! Their jalapeno bread is wickedly good. The garlic one is the next in line of my favs there. How good you ask? You'll need to finish it within 6 days. Otherwise, you'll need to freeze it to prolong the shelf life. Why? Because there are no preservatives in their loafs. Its the real deal. Inside, you'll find a lot of kitchen and random items which is quite cute to browse around. There's plenty of seating area to enjoy your snacks and morning brew. I would say go early and stop in for a pit stop. Its the best!

Yelp
I took my husband to Dudley's Bakery for the first time and he is officially a Dudley's fan. We rarely have a weekend off together so we did a mini road trip to Julian and on the way of course I had to take him to Dudley's. Superbowl Sunday meant less people on the road and a pretty quiet visit, at first he didn't really understand all the hype but now he's a convert. He roamed around the store and in turn I ended up finding clearance section for the Christmas goodies. I ended up picking up a Bread Bauble, which is completely appropriate and a steal at $4. As for food, we ended up getting their sliced cheddar jalapeno bread and scored a box of pastries at 50% off, plus we ordered a Bajapotle sandwich to share and added bacon to it. For everything it was around $40+, if you have never had a sandwich from Dudley's please do yourself a favor and get one. The Bajapotle was so good, the spice from the jalapeno bread really tied it all together and had the best meat to cheese to veggie ratio! A couple of days later I did end up recreating that sandwich, but alas not as good as Dudley's. For $10 our pastry box, included 2 croissants, 2 cinnamon rolls and a savory pastry which I think had tomato jam. The cinnamon rolls are amazing, not too sweet and the glaze is perfect! I ended up eating the savory pastry too and it was just the right little snack. I fear we will be driving 45 minutes to Dudley's just to get bread and I'm not mad at that haha. Please check them out.
google avatar

Larry P.

Yelp
The sandwich's are large and good freshly made! Not busy just an average day which is great because of the crowds.

Yelp
This Bakery is amazing! It is worth stopping in on your way to Julian. Highly recommend picking up a loaf of Jalapeño Cheddar Bread. We plan to stop here from now on. Pros: * Amazing Bread; it is so soft and fresh * Outstanding Sandwiches; recommend the bajapotle * Friendly staff * Quick service; we got there just before 12 and it was busy. The staff had 3 registers open for orders, so we didn't wait to long. * Very clean and welcoming inside. Cons: * N/A Extras: * Big parking lot; just be careful cause there is a lot of traffic * The receipt has the bathroom code * Expect to have to wait - Just remember it's worth it!

Yelp
Stopped here on the way to the town of Julian. It's a good stop to take a break, restrooms, stretch your legs, and get some food, snacks, and gifts. The people here are very friendly. The place itself has a lot to look at. Besides the bakery items, they also have a section of nic nacs - soaps, mugs, stuff animals, etc. The highlight of the place is their bakery items. They have a good selection of breads, cookies, pastry rolls, and other items. They also have a deli the sandwiches made with their fresh baked bread. We had the bajapolte sandwich and it was delish. Definitely recommend stopping by this place if your own your way or near Julian.
google avatar

Yelp
Don't recommend the breakfast sandwiches. The toasted bun is crumbly and bland. Would be 10x better if it were served between slices of of one of their fine breads. Egg was suspiciously circular. Wait was 30 minutes on a Tuesday afternoon. Convenient for supercharging at least.
google avatar

Keith R.

Yelp
Overpriced garbage. Not your cozy little bakery any more. They went corporate and it sucks. If I knew how much my daughter paid for a microwaved bacon egg and cheese I would have thrown it back in their face. Poor cooks and stupid people microwave eggs. That's criminal and Dudleys corporate is a thief. If i wanted crap i would have gone to a convenience food mart. Charging your greedy prices for microwaved food is robbery. Go to the gas station at the Res their BEC is much better tasting. And i am surprised they haven't been sued for causing an accident with that stupid reflective roof vent. It blinds be and thankfully I'm not driving.

Yelp
We got some of the jalapeño cheese bread which is good. They also have pastries and sandwiches. A lot of parking and inside they have a cute little shopping section and a lot of seating
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Whenever we head out to Julian or the Safari Park aka Wild Animal Park we have to stop by Dudley's! They have the best cheese strudel! Sometimes I get the Raspberry. Lemon pistachio cookies are good as well. My friend always gets the jalapeño bread. You have to go early as you can as they sell out daily. Parking is easy as they have a huge lot. Go next door and get Julian pie as well.

Jill H.

Yelp
Stopped by Dudleys for some goodies on Sun Dec 7 and wasted 20.95 on a apple crumble pie that was not cooked all the way ,under all the crumb the crust was all doughy and stringy nasty wanted a pie so badly and wanted to try a dudley one this time.

Yelp
When in the area this is required stop! We purchased some bread of course. They have many to choose from. We selected the Jalepeno cheddar and the garlic. The sourdough is also one of the best. We then shared a sandwich. They are very large and easily provide two meals from one sandwich. This place is always packed so bring your patience! It's well worth it.

Yelp
If you are ever in this area, it's an absolute must that you come to this bakery! I have been coming here since I was a little kid just not as frequently as I would like to since it's quite far from where I live. I came this past Sunday, it was a little busy inside, but plenty of parking and barely await to check out at the register. It's really cute inside, lots of little things you can purchase and some tables and chairs so you can sit and eat while you're there. The ladies working were so friendly, and answered all my questions about the sweet treats. I purchased a cinnamon roll, cinnamon raisin bread loaf, and a blueberry scone. All were delicious! The only thing I managed to get a picture of before consuming was the cinnamon roll lol so I have uploaded that picture. I absolutely love cinnamon rolls, and it was super delicious, I loved it and was able to stretch it out for three servings. My friend got a double chocolate cookie and some strawberry rhubarb jam. Everything is so fresh.

Yelp
Love going to Dudley's for lunch!! It's always a must for me to get the iced lavender mocha when I'm there. They also have a good sandwich menu and it's always hard to choose which one to order because they all look so good!! Can't wait to go back!!
google avatar

Gref W.

Yelp
I've been coming here since I was a child, and the bread is as good as ever! Decided to get three loaves this time for sandwiches in French toast. Who doesn't love this place. I highly recommend!

Yelp
Great little place to come to whether your a local or just passing thru . I've been here quite a few times and it's good every time . I tried the avocado toast today and it was good but the bread was too thick . I wanted a healthier option and ended up with a carb lovers delight . Next time I'll try and see if they can do thin sliced bread . Service was good . Coffee was decent . Bathrooms clean .
google avatar

Chanel Y.

Yelp
So glad my friend introduced me to Dudley's! The service was great! We stopped in on our way home from Julian, and I got a brownie, and chocolate croissant, and vanilla cake with cherries. Everything was just so so so good! The brownie had a different texture than a normal brownie, this one was almost cakey-but a super moist brownie-esque cake. Really good, though! I highly recommend stopping in if you're in the area!
google avatar

Emma S.

Yelp
Love their breads!! Always a stop on my way home from Julian. Love that they sell day old breads too.
google avatar

Lori H.

Yelp
The date but bread is my favorite but there are so many amazing fresh treats. A "must" stop when you are in the area. The decor is great, sandwiches are excellent, stop in and see for yourself.
google avatar

Amanda J.

Yelp
This large bakery has a lot of indoor seating. They also have a large selection of bread, pastries, and drinks. I couldn't decide between the Avocado Toast and Veggie Sandwich with salami so I ordered both. The avocado toast came with a thick piece of bread and a lot of fresh avocado, olives, feta cheese, and balsamic. I enjoyed it. I took the sandwich home to enjoy later. I enjoyed that too. The employees I interacted with were very friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
The food was so amazing. The workers were super kind and helpful. I bought a jam there that was passion fruit, pineapple, & guava and it was some of the most delicious jam ive ever had.

Yelp
On our trip to Julians, reddit and tiktok told us to stop by Dudleys. Dudley had so much baked goods and yummy pastries! We bought some bread, some pastries, a fruit tart, and a couple of sandwhiches! I got the breakfast sandwhich. Yum ate that right up. There is pletny of indoor seating as well as outdoor. There is also a small shopping area you can walk through. Since we went around the holiday season they were selling a lot of knick knacks that would make great presents like ornaments or trinkets for stocking stuffers. The food was really impressionable so I recommend this as a stop for anyone who wants to grab a bite before hitting julian (its also less croweded... long lines but guaranteed not as long as if you eat inside julian)

Yelp
Just finished riding at Palomar mountain and Julian area with some friends and came up on this little cute store in Santa Ysabel so we stopped for some sandwiches and beverages! Gracie took our order and helped us choose our food, which was delicious !! Plenty of parking space and great location if anyone is up on the mountains.

Yelp
Visited 5/17/2024 Hi Guys Just want to let you all know that I finally decided to re visit Dudley's Bakery in Santa Ysabel a little ways out of Ramona heading up to Julian. They fresh Bake some excellent Breads and Pastries. Always nice to pick up a loaf or two fresh and soft straight from the ovens. They have a great Deli with fresh made to order Sandwiches on Bread baked that same day. I ordered The Classic Club on Sourdough. It's loaded with Turkey, Ham, Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, Avocado and Mayo on Dudley's Fresh Baked Sourdough. It was Amazing. It's now my go to sandwich deli. The sandwiches are triple deckers loaded with flavor and large enough for two to share. I'm looking forward to trying more of the small menu including The Soup of The Day. Check out my photos and the menu. If your out this way be sure to stop by and enjoy this place. Nice place for lunch. Highly Recommended. Open 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday. Enjoy. Dudley's Bakery 30218 CA-78 Santa Ysabel, CA 92070

Yelp
Bakery w/ nice selection of dine-in options. NO GLUTEN-FREE BREAD OPTIONS! Salads & macaroons are GF. You wait in line to order & are given a device that notifies you when your food is ready & you pick it up. Functional tables & a cute little gift shop. Why they lock their bathrooms is beyond me. Not like there are a lot of homeless folks wandering around in Santa Ysabel. On my last visit, men's room door was propped open w/ trash can but women's was locked
google avatar

Rica R.

Yelp
Food 5/5. It was towards the end of the day when I came here and I got the pumpkin danish and macaroon with chocolate and it was the best I've had! Can't wait to visit and get them again while trying out more! Service 5/5. The girls were nice Ambiance and Aesthetic 10/5! Love everything about it. Love the bakery and merch section!
google avatar

Martha M.

Yelp
Been here a few times and i must say I love their coffees, they have a nice selection of baked goods, sweets & breads and some discounted but have to get there early to get any. On the weekends it gets crowded as everyone is out driving through to Julian or towards Borrego Springs, it's midway and a favorite pit stop. What I like is that it's the only place nearby we can actually go and do freshly prepared sandwiches and either eat there, park somewhere and enjoy the fresh air and views or eat at home as there are no restaurants near us (Farmhouse 78 is right there but always crowded on weekends, though looks good based on popularity). So it's kinda our only takeout choice that's fresh and delicious. They also have gifts and cute country decor. A popular place among locals and do yourself a favor, don't wear an LA baseball team shirt (hint hint) as they recently played the Padres short of this review and it is SD Padres territory. I finally figured out why everyone was staring at my husband (I only wear my team shirts when in LA/Inland Empire)

Yelp
Dudley's bakery is a San Diego county classic. Well known for their specialty breads (including jalapeño, walnut raisin, and cheddar), pastries (highly recommend the chocolate chip cookies), and sandwiches.
google avatar

Kay M.

Yelp
Awesome little spot. Drinks are on point, the interior is all vibes and the outside view lets you know you're in the country. Youve made it out the city! The lavender matcha is amazing. The mocha uses this DEEP chocolate kind of flavor, its amazing. The walnut muffin is that buttery kind of soft-type. Customer service and speed were quite nice! Great way to start a trip if youre heading this way!

Yelp
As a LONG TIME customer of Dudley's this review pains me to leave. This has been a family MUST STOP over all my (30) years. We make about a half a dozen trips up this way every year. Always making them a stop either on the way up or on the way back. Grabbing some snacks for the road and always for when we got to where we were going. This time we popped our head in a little later in the afternoon then we usually do, knowing that when its later in the day we may experience what we are looking for cold possibly be sold out. When I was unable to find the one and only thing that I wanted I decided to ask a young lady that worked there. I asked (the sweet young ladies bagging the bread)" I'm sorry to bother you, i know it's a little late in the day but are you all sold out of your pull apart bread?" The young lady replied back to me that they have discontinued it! WHAT!!!! One of the best things they are know for!!!! She saw my shock and when I inquired more as to why she said she simply didn't know why they didn't make it any more but that I might want to try one of their coffee cakes. I am heart broken to say the least. I cant make my yummy French Toast with coffee cake, I use the pull apart bread. :(. Look like I have no need to stop here any longer, an will have to change our road tips to head towards Schat's bakery more often

Oh Dudley's bakery, nestled in the foot hills of Julian and cuyamaca mountain. This little bakery serves up freshly baked pastries daily, sandwiches and coffees. We stopped by the other day on the way up to fort cross, which I highly recommend if you have children. I decided to get something for my sweet tooth on the way back to town and picked up a pastry that was so delicious I might just drive back from Chula Vista just for the pastry alone! It was a strawberry and cheese pastry from one of the tables. Arrived a little late so a lot of the items in the case were gone which I was really bummed about. I'm definitely going to try more items when I come back. I love the ambiance as well, it's very country style and the scenery around is beautiful as well.
