Dudley's Review - Lower East Side - New York - The Infatuation

"Not long ago, this tiny restaurant on Orchard and Broome was adorably named Little Giant, conceivably because the food was big, while the restaurant was incredibly small. Unfortunately, the food wasn't quite big enough to keep the place afloat for more than a few years, and a new restaurant now occupies the space. Dudley's is the new establishment that's now opened up in this still tiny dining room, and it's brought to you by the folks that run Australian bar and restaurant hot spots Kingswood and Ruby's. It's got the distinct feeling of a place that's gonna be a hot person hang out, regardless of whether or not the food is good. We hung here on a recent summer evening and had a really good time eating, drinking, and scoping the clientele...almost like we were in a nice part of the West Village as opposed to one of the worst parts of the Lower East Side. The food didn't blow our minds, but we came away glad that this insane neighborhood has something a bit more...neighborhoody again. The menu at Dudley's is large and varied, from light bites and vegetable starters to sandwiches and hearty entrees. We recommend leaning heavy on the first half of the menu, and also having lots of drinks. There are a few very delicious things to eat, but there are also some let downs on the menu that you should know to avoid. Either way, this place is far more about the hang than it is a memorable meal. Go in with the right expectations and you'll be glad it's there. Food Rundown Roasted Manila Clams A nice plate of clams that might be the best thing from the starter section of this menu. They're garnished with some "cider green onions," which is whey they're good? Who knows. Order them. Fresh Kale Caesar I've become quite the connoisseur of raw kale salads (trying to fight off the 'betes), and this one feels a bit unfinished. We love the idea, but we've had plenty of other kale caesar's that are far better. Grilled Peaches We're always down with fruit and salad, and this is no exception. Peaches + arugula + marscapone + taragon makes for a happy equation. Get it while peaches are in season. Fresh Prosciutto Crostini This seemed exciting in concept - a piece of bread, pecorino, and a fried egg on top of some meat. But in reality, it was kind of a snooze. It just didn't really come together. Fried Chicken Sandwich Don't put a fried chicken sandwich on the menu, make it look like this, and allow it to kind of suck. This thing was straight up bland. Famous Bronte Burger Not a brontosaurus burger, but an Australian slant on a burger that may or may not contain dinosaur. We love this beef patty on a ciabatta with a sweet and spicy chili mayo. You may recognize it from the Kingswood and Ruby's menu, which is why the word "famous" is in the title. Kale Pesto Apparently kale does not make for a good pesto. This tasted like pasta I used to make when I was drunk in college, which is to say I don't really remember it." - Chris Stang

Didn't know Dudley's was here until we were headed towards the Disc golf course. I immediately added to my list to try. Really cute diner setting with a few antiques inside. The food was extremely responsibly priced, good portions and tasty. Service was good and super friendly. I was glad to find a down home cooking breakfast place in Jeff City.

First time here. We stopped here for breakfast on a Saturday morning. They were busy but we got a seat immediately. The service is great and they are really friendly. My wife had the country ham and biscuit and gravy, I had the sausage, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on sourdough with hashbrowns. They were both very good. We'll be back next time we are in the area. Definitely recommend. Make sure you bring cash, the don't take debit or credit cards, but there is an ATM of you need it.

Great traditional diner. Need more like this in the Jefferson City area.

The food was good and the wait staff were all very nice. Prices were reasonable to good. My only complaint is the time the kitchen took to prepare the food. Had they been more timely I'd gladly give them 5 stars.

Yelp
To start out - the food was good and that's what you're looking for in a restaurant. We had breakfast here and the food was good. The eggs were done in multiple ways correctly, the sides were good. Coffee kept coming, the service was good. I very much appreciate when people get up that early to wait tables, it's getting more and more rare. It is very much a local's spot, in several cases I saw someone walk in, sit down, and the waitress brought their drink and put in their order without asking. At 6am when they open, it was mostly older retired men complaining about politics, which I suppose is what you get in the state capitol. Last, a heads up - no credit cards, be sure to bring cash.

Yelp
I am giving 1 star because there is not a zero. Went there about 12:30 and ordered roast beef with mashed potatoes, green beans, and Cole slaw. The roast beef was sliced with the grain and was so tough we couldn't eat it. Mashed potatoes tasted like instant, and the gravy tasted like it was from a can The Cole slaw was just plain weird tasting. After a few minutes and a bite of each we gave up, left 2 plates of food and paid the cashier. The server and cashier didn't ask if everything was OK. I suggested to the cashier someone needed to teach the cook how slice roast beef. She replied, "I know"? Really? We will NEVER go back!!

Yelp
Well, since I HAVE to give at least one star, I'll say the coffee was good. But that's all I can say. My family stopped in for breakfast while visiting the area for a softball tournament. We enjoy patronizing local fare when we travel. We came in to a nearly empty dining room with just a few tables occupied by already dining customers and ordered 2 omelets and a pancake. We enjoyed the coffee and watched the staff eating at the counter. After 25 minutes the waitress came over with the silverware and stated they were just about to START our food and it would be an additional 10 minutes or so. We left still hungry and no apology given. Unacceptable and really disappointing service.

Yelp
By far the BEST breakfast spot in Jefferson City! The service is great, the menu options are spot on for a little restaurant like this, and the food was AMAZING! Their Blueberry Pancakes and hash-browns are phenomenal!

Yelp
This little place has been around for quite a long while. It's worth the small trip to the outskirts of Jefferson City. I've personally only done breakfasts here. Beware it's CASH ONLY. And they do still have a smoking section. Now that that's out of the way ;) their bacon and cheese omelet is probably the best I've ever had. I can't make an omelet this good, I've tried. They serve the best chocolate milk also. Nice and creamy. When I'm not enjoying some sort of bacon breakfast I am having the country ham that's cooked to perfection. Grab it with some toast and hashbrowns with an egg and you're stuffed. Aside from the building being old the place has always been cleanly. They are usually busy and if you decide to stop in you will see why.

Yelp
Love this place! I've called in and picked up food several times as well as dined in several times. Russ stack is my favorite breakfast and pork tenderloin is a nice lunch.

Yelp
I've eaten at Dudley's only once. Once was all it took. I ordered catfish. I've had a lot better in my days. The service was about not there and the food was mediocre, at best. For some reason, it's a very popular spot. People love Dudley's. Maybe because it's a local flavor and they enjoy it.

Yelp
We love Dudley's. It has the best breakfast in town. The service is fabulous and the coffee is always hot and ready to pour.

Patti W.

Yelp
I don't know where the previous reviewer got their idea about service, but everytime I have been to Dudley's (nonsmoking section), they have been nothng but solicitious. The food is pretty much what one would find at a local cafe. The fried chicken is great and the steaks are prepared pretty well.

Yelp
Have been dining there for at least 25 years. It's a casual diner with everything you would expect. The only Suprised would be that they still don't take debit or credit cards. Bring cash or you will need to use the ATM.

Yelp
If there was ever a home town resturant rated five stars, this is it! Fine dining in a booth for sure, and Dudley may serve you himself. Stay away from the fried chicken but for sure sample the hand made onion rings.
