What to Do in Mérida, Mexico in the Yucatán

"No trip felt complete without visiting Dulcería y Sorbetería Colón, the storied ice cream parlor founded in 1907 that serves sorbets and ice creams in regional tropical flavors like soursop, mamey, coconut, and mango; I tried a champola, a tall sundae glass filled with my chosen sorbet and topped with cold milk." - Scarlett Lindeman Scarlett Lindeman Scarlett Lindeman is a chef, writer, and researcher based in Mexico City, Her work covers Mexican cuisine, foodways, and culture. It is the end of December. Over the past week, I have traveled extensively in the Yucatán peninsula--Tulum, Merida, and Valladolid. I've had sorbets in all of these places. Looking back, this was the worst experience we had. If you want a feel for how sorbets were made here 100 years ago---some water, a lot of sugar and some flavor--this is the place to go. Nothing here (other than the updated prices perhaps) seems have changed from its original setting--other than the staff glued to their phones. Even the chairs looked original to the store! We tried the tamarind, the chocolate, the toronja and vanilla. Other than the tamarind, all the others tasted like flavor "suggestions"--there was nothing that tasted like vanilla or grapefruit. The person taking our order was yawning looking at us and couldn't wait to get to his video. Taking our order seemed to be an unpleasant distraction. We were swayed by the amazing reviews on the web and persisted. There should be nicer sorbeterias in Mérida--save yourselves the trouble of going here. By the way, if you choose to order this rather expensive poorly made dessert for its expensive price, they only take cash or American Express...

Google
This place has spectacular sorbert ice cream! They are all made with water base and truely creamy 😃 in our family they’re favorite as you might see is a combo of coconut and strawberry. They also cell cookies and merengues, but ice creams rely if you are into a sorbert style these are a must!

Google
Right in the town center and they have some amazing sorbets! We had the mango sorbet and it was delicious and I feel it’s an absolute must visit in Mérida!

I really don't understand how is that in Merida where the income is quite low an waterbased 🍨,could cost almost 8 usd per scoop. whoever is familiar with a Concrete in the Midwest (USA) could have an idea of what to compare with. I honestly wouldn't recommend this place anymore. NOTE, is not about the price is more about the cost-beneffit os this product. Not worth it.

Google
Really nice fruit sorbet, not too sweet (we tried strawberry flavour) and quick service. Clearly displayed prices (mxn 85 for a scoop) and a list of flavours makes it very easy to order. It's not as cheap as mcdonalds cone but not as expensive as haggen daaz (mxn 150 in playa del carmen, for example).

If you like fruit sorbets which are the perfect level of sweetness, this place is for you. We went back twice and had to try all of the flavours.

Yelp
Get the elote and mamey flavors - they are some of the best sorbets I've had. I wanted to try 2 flavors and they wouldn't do that for the small size so I got 1/2 a liter and, well, I finished it all. No cones, no frills, just good sorbet.

Yelp
Great place to stop by on a hot Merida afternoon for a sorbetes. I have tried the coconut, lime, strawberry, and the corn flavor. The corn flavor was recommended by a friend and he was right about it being good. My wife loves the mango. Being right on the Paseo is a great place to people watch.

Yelp
We visited Merida about a month ago and spent our Sunday morning strolling Paseo de Montejo. Even a morning stroll in the shade is super hot so we were so happy to arrive for a sorbet! We ordered peach and mango.... Mango was best. Really excellent spot for a treat!

Yelp
This is a great place to stop for a sorbet on a hot Sunday as people of all ages ride by on their bicycles for the biciruta. Our favorite flavors are the coconut and the limon. Nice meringue cookies too. If you are paying by card, keep in mind that they only take Amex.

Yelp
This shop reminds me of an old fashioned ice cream parlor, but they serve handmade sorbets, which are quite lovely on a hot day. The peach (durazno) was very good and very sweet, with small pieces of peach in it. The chocolate was also very good.
