On the Grid : The Archway Under the Manhattan Bridge

"The Archway is 7,000-square-feet of space under the Manhattan Bridge. During the warmer months, hoards of DUMBO inhabitants opt to eat or purchase lunch (and some booze) inside the 45' historic Belgian block. After closing to the public for 17 years by the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT), the Archway was reopened by DOT after advocacy from the the DUMBO Improvement District." - Column Five

It’s cute and there are events that are out on here sometimes.

Perfect weather for the final Wednesday with Lulada band. A nice crowd of happy people joined to dance or simply share the upbeat music. Porta potties were available with toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

Great flea market and very crowded. Good for a weekend trip

Google
Obsessed with the flea market here. It is the best place to look for vintage in the city. I went to a little concert here recently that was adorable.

Alvin Rodriguez

Google
A wonderful place just to chill and a great photo spot with the DUMBO sign. There are picnic tables if you need a place to sit or eat. This place is also used to hold events.

Google
Beautiful arched plaza. Flea market on weekends.

Once arriving to this place for dinner, no one greeted me. The staff was very rude once i did say hello and never looked up from the bar once. I would never suggest anyone going here especially if you’re a person of color

Yelp
Dumbo is always busy as it provides a beautiful view of the Manhattan Bridge. There is plenty to do in the area and we felt safe during the time we visited. I've been able to visit during the night time and during the day time and I got to say that my favorite time has been at night. So beautiful.

Yelp
There is just something so fun and iconic in Dumbo. It may just be a photo op spot for many but truly memories are made here as well. Even though ive been here a good number of times I still enjoy taking in the scenery here as well as getting some shots. If youre not into photos there are a shops, other sight seeing areS and restaurants nearby as well so there really is something for everybody.

Yelp
DUMBO is an acronym that expands to "Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass". It's a neighborhood that fronts on to the East River, nestled under the Manhattan Bridge. Tip: While this neighborhood has a cutsie acronym of a name, it's actually a very pleasant place to visit, especially if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan (which is just across the East River). The Manhattan Bridge, in conjunction with the cobble-stone streets and the historical and dramatic architecture (remanants of the Gilded Age) loan DUMBO a unique character that helps make it quite memorable :-) Instead of the plethora of factories that could be found here in the 19th century, 21st century. DUMBO teams with boutiques, bookstores, coffee shops, backeries and art galleries. You'll also find the Time Out Center here; that's filled with restaurants and cafes. My favorite way to enter DUMBO is to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. From there it's nice to wander around Brooklyn Bridge Park. That's a small park that's nestled under the Manhattan Bridge. From the park you can enjoy some excellent views of the Manhattan skyline; you can also get some great photos of the iconic Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges.

Yelp
Perfect view. No rain. Not a lot of ppl. There's steps for u to take a Pic. It's a great place to see Brooklyn bridge

Yelp
This is such a cool neighborhood, there's just so much to do and see. The neighborhood has a vibrant energy, and I especially enjoy strolling through the streets, watching people as they explore and take in the space. One of my favorite spots in here has to be the cinematic view of the Manhattan Bridge, perfectly framed between the bricked buildings on Washington Street. It's an iconic sight that looks like something straight out of a movie and is a must-see for anyone visiting. Currently, there's construction happening onto the right building which ruins the experience a bit. Beyond the stunning views, the neighborhood is filled with great shops and eateries, making it a perfect place to continue exploring once you've snapped your photos. That said, DUMBO can get crowded during the day, especially if you're looking to capture that perfect shot of the bridge. I highly recommend coming early in the morning to avoid the crowds and get clear photos without too many people in the frame. If you're in Brooklyn, this neighborhood is a must-visit!

Yelp
Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge and you will be in the trendy section of Dumbo ( Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) with its cobblestone streets, great little restaurants, and some really cool shops. Beautiful views of the Manhattan Skyline. This historic area was once industrial and has transformed into a vibrant community with trendy boutiques, art galleries, cafes, and parks. Saturday and Sunday from 10-5 there's a nice outdoor market. If you don't want to walk the bridge it's easily accessible by Subway.
google avatar

Alaleh P.

Yelp
Picturesque neighborhood with the best view of Manhattan Bridge. It's so nice to walk in the neighborhood and enjoy the views and architecture. The Manhattan Bridge view gets very busy as everyone walks around and wants to capture the best shots, but it's worth the crowds and wait. You can also buy souvenirs at a cheaper price here.

Yelp
What is there not to like about Dumbo?!?! Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass (or "organization" it depends on who you ask), is one of Brooklyn's most visited neighborhoods. DUMBO neighborhood which lies between the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridges encompasses so much NYC culture including guided walking tours, Brooklyn Bridge Park (great place to have a summer night picnic), a carousel, skating rink, NY waterway ferry, cobblestone streets, and great food. I can't forget those iconic views of the Downtown Manhattan skyline. Yes DUMBO has become a tourists attraction and that's because right here, you can get the best of NYC.
google avatar

Sara C.

Yelp
We visited friends who live in New York, and absolutely stopped in our tracks when we saw the iconic view of the Manhattan Bridge in the DUMBO district. If you're not familiar, this view was seen on the cover of Once Upon a Time in America, was featured in the film Joker, and is just all around one of the most iconic and photo-worthy street corners in the city/country. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and make a quick stop here to stand in the shadow of the Manhattan Bridge and get your own DUMBO photo to remember the experience!
google avatar

Yelp
Down over the Manhattan Bridge overpass has some incredible views of the waterfront, Manhattan skyline, and Manhattan Bridge. Just a quick 20 min walk over the bridge, ferry ride, or drive across (less fun/aesthetic), you'll find all the shops, coffee spots, bars, restaurants, and even a merry go round along the walkway. While here, I'd recommend checking out Timeout Market and grabbing a drink at their outdoor rooftop bar overlooking the Brooklyn bridge at night. Be sure to give yourself a few hours to actually explore the neighborhood and all that it has to offer.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Iconic and must visit, whether you're a tourist or a local. It's not the best place to get pictures in for yourself but it's just an iconic photo spot. After taking a photo, walk over to the merry-go-round! It's an easy walk and a great way to relax and hangout. Definitely check out Time Out Market too! Some of the best restaurants in NYC are in here. It'll definitely be crowded but there are so many options with so many cuisines and they're pretty fast so the food comes out quick. You can also go upstairs to the rooftop to hang out and just enjoy another view.

Yelp
A must visit neighborhood in NYC. It stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. I visit this spot often when visiting NYC since I have a friend that lives in this neighborhood. There is a great area to take pictures with the Manhattan or Brooklyn bridge in the background and you can easily get to the Brooklyn bridge by foot here. Peddle beach is such a cute spot with a carousal. Plenty of nice restaurants with views of the Hudson. Might as well stop by Time our Market while you are here!
google avatar

Denise A.

Yelp
Down under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass is a beautiful spot to see both the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges, with gorgeous views of the waterfront (East River) and the skyline of Manhattan. There is a park and the 1922 restored carousel which you can ride on for $2. Take a stroll along the waterfront and you can see the Statue of Liberty. The park and entire area is exceptionally clean and well kept and offers spectacular views in any direction. There are many restaurants all around, including the Time Out Market, which is a destination itself. There are shops, galleries and cobblestone streets rich with history and surrounded by architectural marvels. Makes for a wonderful day out!
google avatar

Yelp
Did you know DUMBO's short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass? Cute photo-op spot with a great angle of the Manhattan Bridge! I love the cobblestone streets in the neighborhood. Lots of vehicles pass through this road, so try to not get run over :)
google avatar

Keith F.

Yelp
This is an iconic photo opportunity surrounded by some neat park areas, a great walkway, and some cool shops/restaurants. There are a lot of people in the area and with that brings a lot of unknowns. When we were there the crowd was chilled out and respectful. They have elevated blocks form you to stand or pose on. After you take some pictures go towards the bridge and take a left. You will be near some great green spaces and sidewalks. We walked down and got some delicious ice cream. Definitely worth at least one visit.
google avatar

Brandi I.

Yelp
Worth it just for the pictures, but truly there's so much more. Take the beautiful stroll along the river, eat some good food, grab some dessert, ride the carousel and capture every moment to remember. One of my favorite spots to visit!
google avatar

Whitney D.

Yelp
Dumbo is one of the areas in Brooklyn I really enjoy going to visit. There are many restaurant's and coffee shops in the area along with shopping galore! If you want to get here by ferry it will cost 4.00 which is so worth it. On weekends they have a big market open its like a flea market where this dumbo sign is. There is also a famous spot where many people like myself will take pictures of the bridge between the buildings! This dumbo sign also was pretty cool. Depending on what angle you saw it from the colors would change. I highly recommend coming to check out this area of brooklyn.

Yelp
We walked across the Manhattan Bridge to arrive here. We could see the people lined up to take their photos from the bridge and it was pretty crowded. We were happy to get there and see what the food options in the area would be. There was a coffee chop and a quick service restaurant nearby. There are also a few subway stops within 10 minutes of this location. Once fueled, we braved the crowd to take our picture. This was around 9:30am on a Sunday morning. Everyone was nice and there were two elevated stands, which I actually did not like the picture from. We went on the street, which was partially blocked off and took our picture from there as well. I think this angle looks more natural. From there, we walked back across the Brooklyn bridge to Manhattan.
google avatar

Andrea U.

Yelp
Iconic spot at the corner of Washington Street and Water Street. They now have barricades up because lots of people are taking the iconic photograph. Dumbo stands for down under the Manhattan Brooklyn overpass. This is a happening with many upscale & unique shops, restaurants & friendly people.
google avatar

Amy D.

Yelp
We love coming here when visiting NYC. We have walked the Brooklyn Bridge from the Financial District area. We have also taken the ferry from Manhattan. We have also taken the subway. It's a cute and trendy place where we can stroll peacefully, take pictures of Manhattan skyline, have a bite to eat, sit and relax. There is an amazing rooftop at Timeout Market. We have only visited during the day. We're looking forward to returning at night so that we can view the Manhattan skyline.

Yelp
Ok I admit it... I am basic. I love going to tourist spots and snapping photos of iconic landmarks. So when I had the opportunity to go to NY, DUMBO was on the top of my list. It was easy to find on Google Maps. You can't miss it, because you'll see a bunch of tourists standing in the middle of a narrow street posing and taking selfies. That's how I found the bridge! Anyway, seeing the Manhattan Bridge left me awestruck. It's such a beauty. I can see why everyone loves to come and take pictures here. It's hard to take photos because there's so many people. It's also an active street so be on the lookout for cars trying to drive through the area. The location is very clean and there were no sketchy people (as far as I could tell). It was easy to ask others to help me snap a photo. A kind gentleman even offered to help me take a group photo!! It was a bright and sunny day so my pictures turned out nice.

Yelp
While on vacay (10/07/2022) I added a visit to DUMBO (Down Under The Manhattan Bridge Overpass) to our itinerary because of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridge views and I was not disappointed at all! DUMBO really did offer great views of both bridges and the area itself is conveniently located near the waterfront right by Pebble Beach and the Time Out Market w/ outside seating and a pier to enjoy. We visited on a Friday but it was later in the afternoon so us finding street parking was a no-go but I'm sure if you went earlier in the day, you would definitely have better luck than we did. We ended up having to pay to park in a parking garage, which was about $30 (ouch!) It was a beautiful sunny day when we visited & after walking around to capture all of my awesome vacay pics & videos, we than went to the Time Out Market to use the restroom (public restrooms for all to use, very clean) and to buy ice cream from one of the ice cream shops located inside. The Time Out Market is a cool spot w/ so many food and drink businesses located inside and open seating all around. Be warned that while visiting DUMBO, outside in the bushes was the only spot we saw those notorious NYC GANGSTA RATS...so just be careful while outside near any bushes. Till next time, ~Rebecca
google avatar

Que B.

Yelp
First time coming to this area it's honestly a very congested. I would suggest if driving in please park further down and walk the rest. Parking garages can be very pricey and street parking is close to non existent. Restaurants closer to the park have lines on the weekend so be patient and be kind.
google avatar

Kathy K.

Yelp
We walked across the Brooklyn Bridge to the town of Dumbo just on the other side in Brooklyn with a goal of visiting the area and having lunch. We decided to eat at a restaurant in the Time Out Market. Afterwards we went to the rooftop and enjoyed the views. We walked through the Brooklyn Bridge Park and under the Manhattan Bridge with the sound of the subway beneath. We then walked over to the other side where the carousel and the terminal for the Fulton Ferry. We decided to take the ferry $4 back to NYC. It was a nice day.
google avatar

Coy W.

Yelp
Super cool area of Brooklyn under the Manhattan bridge. The area has the ferry station, a ton of shopping, coffee shops, restaurants, a beach, green space and a boardwalk/path where a lot of people are just enjoying the neighbourhood. I didn't get a legendary pic of the Manhattan bridge between the buildings as I already have one. All that to say there are a lot of great photo spots here from the waterfront, the beach, the river and all kinds of stores and shops. It's also a great spot to fill your belly and enjoy a half day or so. It's also a nice change of pace from hectic Manhattan
google avatar

Enrique V.

Yelp
A must see area when you're visiting Brooklyn for the first time or even if you just want a good photo opp. when we came there wasn't a lot of people so it was kind of easy to get pictures. lots of good places to eat around the area as well
google avatar

Lefai K.

Yelp
Yo, even if you're not a 'grammer or care for photos, you'll have to make sure to stop on here as there is a reason this place is shown in many photos. The way the builds give sharp angles to highlight the Manhattan Bridge cannot be replicated, imitated, or duplicated. A great view of the bridge, with street vendors and the like, to cash in on the opportunity. Good vibes only. Definitely worth the trip from the MTA, which is not too far away.
google avatar

Denise W.

Yelp
This is a definitely must visit neighborhood in NYC. You can get a spectacular photo of the Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge at the same time. Dumbo was super busy when we went. There were lots of tourists. Also Dumbo has lots of good food spots that you can check out while you are here. The walk was very relaxing.
google avatar

Nicole R.

Yelp
We crossed the Brooklyn bridge to get here, easy to find, just follow the signs. This is a tourist spot but you will also find cute boutiques and coffee shops. Loved the view of the bridge. Nice neighborhood to explore.
google avatar

Anthony S.

Yelp
DUMBO is short for down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass. DUMBO is one of the most photographed spots while in Brooklyn and many visitors often cross over the Brooklyn Bridge for this photo opportunity. The cobblestone roads and brick buildings create a perfect frame for a photo. If you're looking for the perfect photo without other visitors in the background, I'd highly recommend visiting early. Outside of the iconic photo, there are other attractions to the area including a couple legendary pizzerias, shops, and a park. Make sure the DUMBO area is on your itinerary if you're looking to visit Brooklyn!
google avatar

Cara E.

Yelp
My friend and I were visiting NYC a couple of weeks ago and decided to visit the DUMBO neighborhood to check out the Instagram spot. It did not disappoint. The view of the Manhattan Bridge is such an iconic photo opportunity. We were really happy we went over there, and we decided to walk back to Manhattan on the Brooklyn Bridge, which was also really cool. It's also fun to pop in to the little shops and the flea market that is in the area. Definitely check it out!
google avatar

Nikhil R.

Yelp
Such a cool spot near the Manhattan Bridge. It's such a lively place with a "flea market" of sorts with incredible knickknacks, records, and food. Definitely come here to grab a picture of the incredibly famous view of the Manhattan Bridge between two stunning brown buildings. When the sun shines on the buildings, the view is breathtaking!
google avatar

Sheryl W.

Yelp
Love Dumbo. 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge is a lovely place to stay. Love Jane's carousel. Time out market gets crazy but good experience. Love looking out at the water. Plenty of places to have a picnic and chill. Enjoy the pizza and ice cream in the area. We like the Osprey for dinner at the 1 Hotel.
google avatar

Marianne W.

Yelp
Dumbo is short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. It's a neighborhood in Brooklyn. Dumbo Industrial District is in the U.S. Register of Historic Places. I love this neighborhood for the arts and funky atmosphere. No matter how much time I spend here there's always something new. In my old age I don't get to Brooklyn as much. I'm recommending you set aside a day or two and really enjoy the shops and restaurants. It's a different kind of experience. I may be delusional but to me it's the Wealthy Haight Ashbury of NYC.
google avatar

Nico Samneil S.

Yelp
Update: May '23 - a fair amount of people if going early in the morning. A beautiful view if the skies are clear. Parking is first come, first serve. Fair tourist spot due to its instagrammable area. A lot of tourist at the weekend. Looks nice on the picture but has a lot of trash. Restaurant and food stalls on the area.
google avatar

Rawdon T.

Yelp
I have only been to the jumble section a few times, and every time I come here it is always a great experience. The time out market in the tumble section has many great restaurants inside where you can choose your poison or cuisine of choice. The area is very trendy, and somewhat upscale. There are many views of the bridge and the water and it will not disappoint. A few summers ago I came here and we sat on the rocks down by the water, and enjoyed the beautiful sites and sounds of the city. Things in this area are a bit on the pricey side however, I would definitely recommend it to anyone and wanting to get a good view of New York and some good food.
google avatar

Yelp
DUMBO is the place to be with an amazing Instagram/photo spot but be warned, there are a ton of people taking photos. Here are some tips & tricks: -Be sure to arrive early and avoid weekends. We came on a Friday at 8am & there were already 3 groups there taking pics -in the winter time, wear warm clothing & be prepared for wind considering it is in the shade of buildings -get some nice hot cocoa & coffee at nearby coffee shops/market. There's also a Starbucks nearby too -if there is someone else taking photos, have your photographer take your pic blocking them with your body lol There's a lot of other things to see around the area and if you want the exercise, you can walk to the Brooklyn bridge (it's about a 5-10 min walk). Although you want the pic & go, take a few minutes to enjoy the architecture of this majestic bridge. A MUST SEE!

Janice W.

Yelp
Dumbo did it again. Moved my daughter from Manhattan to Nj with ease. She said they wrapped everything, took apart things that needed to be and swept the apartment prior to leaving. Used Dumbo for 2 family moves and highly recommend them. Wouldn't use anyone else!

Mary T.

Yelp
Great place for a walk with stunning views of Manhattan! The highlight was finding free street parking just a quarter mile away. I'm definitely coming back to explore some of the restaurants next time
google avatar

Marcia T.

Yelp
Great lively area for pictures. So full of LIFE! This place just made me smile. Restaurants, photo shoots, salsa dancing, you name it, it's all going on in #Dumbo. In Dumbo you feel ALIVED! Such an artsy area. Great place to just people watch or socialize with strangers, just DO YOU. However be careful of the rats! Ugh! A Big ass rat darted in front of us in broad daylight out of a bush near a park... but hey, that's NY ‍. "You take the good-you take the bad- put them together and there you have... The Facts Of Life." Hahahahahahaha
google avatar

Gerald H.

Yelp
Be prepared to crawl over every person who wants to have the same Instagram photo of themselves trying to do something different yet falling into the same crap. Everyone ruins each other's shots and it's yet crowded. Nice place. Spike Lee sent me. errr Mars Blackm
google avatar

Benjamin Q.

Yelp
Keepin it real out here in Dumbo Truly one of my favorite part of Brooklyn. It's lively yet you can find your peace at a certain time in the day or certain part of Dumbo if you look for it. The brick buildings in the area works so well, and most of them are open to visitors which is great. Popular spot for engagement photoshoots and filming as well.
google avatar

Joyce T.

Yelp
Manhattan bridge and Brooklyn bridge is just next to each other. Nice place to sit on the grass for sunbathing, enjoy the breeze or picnic.
google avatar

Anisa S.

Yelp
Loooove dumbo park! This area is always so nice and the views are everything! We were able to go to the restored carousel and it was so much fun for like $2.50 a ticket.
google avatar

Jahnay M.

Yelp
Popular area with all the aesthetics. Plenty of food options to choose from near. Family oriented as well. Parking can be hard to come by.
google avatar

Taifha B.

Yelp
There's so much to do here! Take in some epic views of the NYC skyline? Check. Marvel at the wonder that is the Brooklyn Bridge? Check. Ride a carousel? Check. Dine at some of the best restaurants in the city? Check. Check. I visited to take a stroll along the shoreline at Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Piers further south of the the Park. The park wasn't too crowded which allowed for more space to social distance from others trying to enjoy the park.

Yelp
DUMBO is one of the most diverse, gorgeous, eclectic and sexy neighborhoods in all of Brooklyn with a beautiful waterfront and view of Manhattan. Granted it gets very crowded in the warmer weather with tourists and locals alike flocking there. Minutes away from lower Manhattan, DUMBO used to be the kind of neighborhood that would attract artists, models and musicians. It was desolate, a bit frightening since Brooklyn Bridge Park was not developed yet and there was not much to do. These days, with the addition of Brooklyn Bridge Park, DUMBO is one of several neighborhoods in the area (along with Brooklyn Heights) whose real estate is exorbitant attracting celebrities such as Matt Damon and Michelle Williams. There is so much to do, see and places to eat all within the DUMBO enclave. I have to emphasize that the waterfront, views of NYC skyline are breathtaking. You can absorb it all while strolling along the waterfront, visiting the famous Jane's Carousel or dining at the exquisite Cecconi's restaurant. A new Time Out Market New York food hall made its home there last year. The DUMBO house (of the people who brought you Soho House) is a members only club (with rooftop included) that has also made DUMBO its home. The One Hotel is a gorgeous hotel that is situated facing the water and a rooftop bar with such a closeup view of the Brooklyn Bridge that it appears to be practically sitting on your lap. The famous River Cafe, noted for where most proposals take place, is a perfectly manicured restaurant sitting right on the water. Many newly married couples have their photographs taken in DUMBO straight after their vows. There is so much to love about DUMBO--the quaint cobblestone streets, hidden gem of restaurants such as The Osprey, Seamore's and Jacques Torres Chocolates, the beauty of their real estate and the park which is expansive, offering a good workout. With the warm weather still around, I'd highly recommend paying a visit.

Ruchi S.

Yelp
Nice place to hangout and great rooftops nearby. Amazing view of Brooklyn bridge from there.
google avatar

Alisa J.

Yelp
Awesome area and very scenic! Love the shopping and dining scene. Definitely lives up to the hype. The famous site of the picture of the bridge wasn't too crowded and there aren't any cars passing by. The area is actually blocked off to cars and the street has tables and people can drink and eat there. Highly recommend!
