My husband and I decided to try the Dumpling Haus in Hilldale Mall as one of the kids raved about it. The restaurant was pretty empty at that time at around 5:00 pm on a Monday. My husband and I each ordered the pork wonton which came with a spicy garlic sauce. After we ordered, she told us there was water on the side. The plastic cups looked a bit cloudy and well used and I couldn't tell if they were clean or not, which was a big turnoff. I didn't even think about ordering a beverage, although as we sat down, I noticed a sign that had a few beverages listed on it, from what I recall, was today's specials. I am wondering why she didn't ask us if we wanted a drink with our meal, which would have given them more money.
It didn't take long for our food to arrive. We both agreed that the wrap around the dumpling was very fresh, but the pork stuffing inside was bland. The only thing that gave the dumplings a bit of flavor was the spicy garlic sauce, and it wasn't that spicy. We thought we would receive a small side with it, at least an Asian slaw, but no. There sat eight white dumplings on a white plate with a very tiny container of spicy garlic sauce.
While we were eating, I noticed that we had to clear our own table. Why are you prompted for a tip when paying before you sit down, if you are making the customer take care of everything? It really isn't different then ordering at a fast-food restaurant, so why ask for a tip?
Will we be back? Absolutely not.
