Sometimes, the rating systems are just way off. Take Dumpling King for instance. Currently at 4.5 stars average. Members of an Asian foodie group on Facebook also raved about them. So naturally, I became curious and brought my family here.
Around 1pm on the weekend, they weren't busy at all. We asked for 1 hot tea and 3 iced waters. The cup for the tea was filthy. Stains and rings of old tea filled the inside. The outside had small fragments of something and was wet. It looked as it they dunked someone's old tea cup in dishwater and brought it out. Of course, we asked for another one. It still came out dripping wet but at least the stains were gone. They couldn't even wipe the water off the cup. At this point, our expectations already went quite low.
We ordered their pork buns, since there's a huge banner outside promoting them. This was the first dish to come out. Hot steamy buns, but after one bite, the meat appeared nearly raw. The consistency and color shows undercooked pork. I had to bring it home and pan fry it to cook it further. BTW, they charge an extra $2. to pan fry dumplings or buns. Ridiculous!
We also ordered the seafood dumplings. At $13. for 10, not worth it at all. They were average, and that was the highlight of our lunch.
The 'Noodle in soy bean paste & pork sauce' is translated to Ja Jian mein in Chinese. My instinct told me not to order it, but I've been known to do stupid things at times. This was the worst ja jian mein I've ever had, and I'm including the 60 cents instant ones too. It's essentially a bowl of noodles with some sliced cucumbers, carrots & cilantro, served with a small bowl of salty, dark sauce with very little bits of pork and bean curd. At $10., a rip off. I had to keep adding hot sauce to cover up the unappetizing flavor, and even that didn't help much.
I didn't try their tomato & scrambled egg noodle, but my family told me it was a bit sour. Doesn't sound like anything I would want to eat voluntarily.
I'm sure peeps in the FB Asian foodie group would argue that I should've ordered dumplings, since they are the 'King' of it, but my thoughts are: If you're going to put it on the menu, make sure it's good!
The service was decent, nothing to complain about. The cost is overpriced for what you get. The food was a let down with undercooked pork and awful noodles. My wife didn't feel well after eating here. Neither did I.
The 2 stars is for the fact that they're running a small business. As much as I always prefer to support them, there's absolutely nothing that made us want to come back.
